Ayi had attended the feast with the hopes that maybe she could get on some good gossip...less for herself and more for Ptoth, who's appetite for such things seemed to grow as fast as he himself had. Nothing unusual had caught her eye the entire time so she quickly found herself bored and slightly uncomfortable being surrounded by some many folks, especially senior dragonriders. Right when she was starting to count her losses and try to find a way to excuse herself for a moment, chaos broke out.
"Oh shards!" she groaned, indignation flaring in her chest. She felt fine and obvious people were overreacting. Who was anyone to tell her if she could or couldn't leave. Ok, that was a silly thought. The senior dragonriders had every right to tell her to stay. It was that notion that kept her from issuing further complaint.
Mine? What is happening? came Ptoth's hesitant inquiry, worry thick in his tone.
Apparently there is suddenly a killer sickness on the loose and they won't let me leave the hall yet, she replied sourly. And I can't leave to come give you your oiling. You're going to have to see if Remmy can help you until I can get out of here.
You are fine though, right? Are you warm? Or suffering from indigestion? Or what is it that the one weyrbrat always says...the runs?
Ayi pursed her lips and couldn't help but chuckle. Leave it to the weyrbrats to teach her dragon choice phrases she'd rather not explain. I am fine. Annoyed but fine.
I should find Makereth. He is smart and clever...I bet we could get you out.
Ptoth, just relax. Go find Makereth if you want and perhaps you two can keep us occupied with your silly notions...but for now I'm going to have to behave. Ayi knew if Ptoth had a task to do, he'd at least keep himself out of trouble. For now, she would listen to the chatter around her and try to learn what she could about this supposed mysterious illness.

It had not been a good day. Rieta had become oddly accustom to not good days. She hadn't expected it when Awunrayth's voice had first echoed in her mind, but somehow being a dragonrider was not exactly what she'd expected it to be. There were times, many times, when she missed the easy familiarity of life as a farmcraft apprentice. She tried not to think about it much, it upset Awunrayth. And the sweet natured dragon was the reason that everything was somehow worth it.
So, ever boisterous, ever enthusiastic Rieta was quiet at the feast, picking at her food while she attempted to keep thoughts of any sort to a minimum. It was a technique that seemed to be serving her well until the Weyrleader collapsed.
The whispers of the return of the plague had bothered her, nagged like a toothache and refused to be completely forgotten. Now, as the whisper became a roar, as the Weyrwoman announced that they would not be permitted to leave, panic bubbled up and Rieta's hands began to shake. She clenched them into fists and gritted her teeth.
Mine? Mine. You are not sick. You will not get sick, mine.
It isn't me. It's everyone. The Weyrleader--
No, mine. Please, it will all go well. But even sweet, level-headed Awunrayth could handle only so much. She wasn't proof against her bonded's fears. Her mindvoice wavered and her eyes whirled in anxiety.

Nachith was happy to accept the increased closeness of his largest clutchmate, and his eyes whirled blue-green. The humans are being silly. It is... He paused, consulting with B'ram for a moment, 'Better safe than sorry,' Mine says. So they just had to be patient; not that he was outright going to tell Sharath that. He didn't want her to take it the wrong way.

M'darin had been idly staring into his wineglass, trying to guess the vintage. A little difficult, given he'd already downed two cups before considering it, and the hall had that slight spin it got when he drank too fast. If D'tan was here, he'd have confiscated the glass by now, ordered M'darin to eat the cooling roasted meat lying ignored on his plate. But D'tan wasn't his weyrmate anymore, so he could eat or not eat as he chose.
It probably wasn't even Benden wine, he decided, and knocked it back anyway, just as the Weyrwoman made her announcement. He nearly choked.
At first he was grimly pleased. He'd wished to catch plague to spite his ex-weyrmate, and here his new Weyr had put one on for him especially! He was more concerned when he began to hear the local riders discussing the plague symptoms. It hadn't been mentioned much back at Benden, and the bluerider had always assumed plague was something lingering and unpleasant, possibly with pustules, but the people around him spoke of something as quick and deadly as an unfocused jump between. That wasn't what he'd wanted!
"Are you serious?" he demanded loudly of the riders near him, waving the empty glass in emphasis. "We're to sit in here, waiting to die? Will we be dead by morning, or will we have to wait a whole day?"
Heads turned his way at the outburst.
"No." The mental voice was surprisingly sharp in his wine-soaked state, and cut off any further rant M'darin might have made. He felt Kuridoth pushing reassurance upon him, though he suspected the blue dragon was more concerned than he was letting on. He must have been listening in.
"You will not die. I am with you. Be calm."
M'darin was not calm. He bit his lip and reached unsteadily for the wineskin.

"I wouldn't partake of anything served in the room," came a low, husky murmur. The voice would be familiar to Uuni as the blonde greenrider entered the conversation between the two weyrlings. A nod to Amelia in respect to her coming status and she continued, thoughtful.
"Especially you, goldrider. The lower tables are probably clear but the table of rank is suspect." Her hand fell to her hip where a flask was hooked into her belt and K'lan turned her warm brown eyes to Uuni, her tone wryly amused. She was a smart young woman and was well aware of the brunette's avoidances as of late. "If you're thirsty, feel free."
Condorth's voice was clipped, as usual, but not panicked. Mine, you will take care, yes? Our Avery is shouting again. She has found young Makereth and I.
The corner of K'lan's mouth lifted briefly as her gaze began distant, typical of a discussion with Condoroth. I can only imagine. Tell Avery I've got Uuni now.
-------------
A large, gentle hand settled onto Rieta's shoulder, applying gentle pressure as Ra'ffer's smooth baritone spoke, solely to her. He pulled out the chair beside her, his large frame moving with surprising grace as he sat, close. The lessons had been helping his stutter, especially when he knew what he was going to say, and they had been improving his confidence. He could see her shake.
"Kalth tells me that he is with your Awunrayath and that he will help soothe her fears." A glance and toothy smile from the kind man and he removed his hand, raising his brows. "Do y-y-you mi-mi-mind if I sit with you, as well?"
There is no need to worry. Mine, we must show the others that things will be fine if they calm their fears.

Normally, Uuni would have refused and explained to Amelia that she didn't drink, but instead, getting a skin of hard alcohol sounded like a dream in heaven. So she shrugged and nodded.
"That's a surprise," Uuni answered blandly to the note of Sharath not being stupid. It was impossible to tell whether it was a sarcastic remark or complete truth. Like most things about Uuni, it went both ways.
"Boring," Uuni answered simply. "People talking about their boring lives, ther latest crushes, and oh, ever so exciting, the gossip around the weyr." This last part she emphasized with her hands just to point out that no, it really hadn't been that great. "I think one person next to me got on a talk about dragonhealing." Gag. It had been the most interesting thing to listen to. Well, lies. It was the most useful thing to listen to.
"He Faranthdamned better be--" But she was cut off by the ever low, ever calm voice of that greenrider she knew so well and failed to avoid so much.
Running was never an option, and today, of all days, she didn't want to run. "That's great, Kesslan," she said, trying to remain cheery. "I won't mention everything I already ate tonight." She let out a hefty groan and leaned over, taking Kesslan's arm and tugging her closer to the table.
"Sit down, Faranth shardit." All this standing left her feeling burnt out. And when her eyes caught on the flask, she gave Kesslan an uncertain look. "Are you sure? Because I'll drink all of it." Modesty was for people that weren't in a crisis.
--
On the outside, Makereth was standing calm, patient, but his eyes a distinct yellow. Uuni felt fine on the inside, but her constant worry made him very uncertain.
It wasn't until Avery showed up that he seemed to relax more, and it wasn't only Ptoth who would have benefited from the encounter if they were to meet.
If there was one thing Makereth could do, it was cheer up a few fellows even when he was worried himself. Granted, there were some events that were out of his control. Heartbreaks, deaths of family, but this hadn't turned completely sour for everyone yet, so he chirred and stuffed his nose in Avery's hair to get her to calm down.
Some dragon saliva would give her something else to b***h about, he thought.

"Yeah." K'lan didn't seem to blink at Uuni's use of her former name, they had a growing history between them and the brunette was obviously stressed. Instead she accepted the seat, taking it as smoothly as possible while complying with the force of the bluerider's tug.
It was definitely hard to ruffle her and Uuni had only seen her angry once. K'lan's anger was a cool, contained thing, as were most of her emotions. Situations like this were where the quiet, relaxed young woman shined. Shifting close enough so that they were in casual, brushing contact, K'lan unhooked the container, pressing it into the brunette's hand. She had no hesitations in giving it away.
"Go ahead," a pause and she let her gaze linger a moment. "It's going to be fine, you know." That was another, quieter mumur.

Uuni took the container without a word and sat looking at it for a moment. She had two choices, really. Look decent, drink it like a woman, or get some use out of it.
She held up one finger to keep Kesslan quiet and unhooked the flask. "Don't judge me," she muttered before she raised it to her lips and grimaced. It tasted foul, but she swallowed it down anyway. It was like one of those old games you played when you were a kid, trying to down the whole glass of klah without taking a breath.
It was a testament to her lack of sex lately that she had to take one breath in between. She had warned Kesslan about the contents.
When she'd finished, she set it down lightly, licking the leftovers from her lips and letting out a sigh. The faster it worked, the better.
"It certainly will be now," she answered and gave a sigh, closing her eyes and waiting. "It is alcoholic, right?" Uuni asked after a minute. One could never be sure if Kesslan had decided to give her something else.

"I never do," was the wry response as the greenrider watched Uuni down the beverage. She fell quiet as the brunette finished it off, the two of them simply sitting there until Uuni spoke again, causing K'lan to blink, twice.
"Oh, no, it's fellis juice." One could never really be sure when the blonde was telling a joke, if she failed to accompany it with one of her quick grins. Instead she took the empty flask back, reattaching it to her hip and raising her brows at Uuni. It was, in all reality, very alcoholic. A gift from Avery just before the feast. K'lan, herself, didn't drink much.
A hand crept up to brush hair from her eyes, it was starting to get really long, and her freckled face remained carefully neutral, gaze roaming the dining hall, just in case. "How are lessons?" Might as well take the opportunity to chat, since they hadn't in more than a few sevendays.

Uuni had been staring straight ahead, and when Kesslan threw the poor joke at her, she merely strained her eyes, but did not move her head.
"You're shitting me," Uuni answered. Besides, that much Fellis would probably kill a person. Oh, shards, Kesslan was jealous and wanted to kill her! Jealous of what, though?
Uuni finally turned her head and gave the woman an upset look. "Don't freak me out, K'lan."
That disaster out of the way, she could feel the slight haze starting to pull over her eyesight and the seconds longer that it took to process whatever Kesslan was saying. "Oh, you know. D'astel is nice," she grinned and then followed with a frown - there might not be a nice D'astel around anymore.
She swung her leg to the other side of the bench and leaned her back against Kesslan's shoulder so she could look over at Amelia. "It wasn't fellis. I can tell." But it was alcoholic.

A grin on that attractive, freckled face showed that Uuni was correct in her assumptions and also K'lan's amusement with the response. Assuming correctly that Uuni had wanted to make a vague, sexual comment about the Weyrleader, forgetting his current disposition, she simply raised a brow, voice coolly interested. "I'm sure he is."
It did seem like he was a much easier Weyrlingmaster to deal with that the one back at Ista. The physical contact felt good and K'lan didn't move away, absolutely still but very relieved as the brunette began to relax. A keyed up Uuni was always entertaining, but teasing the poor girl too much was inappropriate for the sitatuation. Besides. It was less fun without Avery.

Had Avery been there, Uuni would have no doubt gone on a long ranting spree about the clothes the girl, wore.
But, given that Avery was not there, Uuni had nothing to drawl on about. So, Uuni went for the next most obvious thing.
"Why haven't you made a move yet?" It was a very simple question and one that she'd always wondered.
"You know, you're all talk and no bite. You walk around the weyr, love, love, love. You sound like you're tripping out on fellis." She leaned back her head on Kesslan's shoulder and closed her eyes for a moment, snorting and chuckling at the idea of Kesslan making a move on her before blowing gently on a few strands of blonde hair that she could see near her face.
"I'm so glad I'm not in love. You people are crazy."

K'lan was quiet for a moment, a long moment, before the slight tremor throughout her frame could be distinguished as silent laughter. She waited until the brunette finished talking, until she could feel her hair stir with that breath before responding. Her voice was low, warm, amused. "It doesn't matter how strong my bite is if what I want to sink my teeth into never comes within arm's reach."
Within arm's reach... Shifting, the blonde let the appendage closest to Uuni curve around the girl's middle, a brief tightening and loosening of her muscles. She was relaxed, casual, though it looked as if the brunette was steadily overcoming her on that front.
"Love? That's not a word you've heard from my lips."

"You shouldn't say things like that with a goldrider so close. You might lose an ear." Uuni grinned and winked.
The patterns on the ceiling were not something she'd noticed before. Not that there were many, but, you know, the rocks were kind of cool. Maybe. It gave her something to try and focus on.
"Sure it is," she answered, picking up her hands and moving them around in a dramatic fashion. "You practically fell down on your knees and worshipped me when you transferred it. You're in denial. You might want to go see Roka. I hear she's good at things like that."
She took in a breath and trailed her fingers down Kesslan's arm. "Well, now that's a little better. But you should stop there because we're friends, you know. Tripping over yourself is bad for our platonic relationship."
She added, with a choked down laugh. "Platonic relationship. What an oxymoron."

"Mmhmmn. You seem pretty hung up on this idea of me being in love with you, Uuni." A warm, breathy laugh and she turned her head, letting her nose and mouth press against dark hair. Her voice was quiet enough to keep the conversation private, despite the intoxicated girl's lack of modesty.
"Bad for our platonic relationship? I like how that sounds." A slow smile and held in laughter was evident in her voice. "Though, if you say I'm in denial, you could be right. You're more familiar with it than anyone, after all."
