"There will always be others here, Alice," Caterpillar said looking straight at her and calling her by her name for the first time since they met. "and change is something you'll have to get accustomed to; change is in this lands nature... its one of the rules of the game."

He turned away; knowing that what he said would just make Alice more curious, and curiousity wasn't always a good thing. He also couldn't help but think her statement about secrets had been about him. "Though I can't tell you where this city came from," Caterpillar commented. "...yet." He had to add; after all he was certain he'd find out the answers sooner or later. He didn't like secrets when they were kept from him of course.

Alice nodded, willing to accept the logic for the time being. She still felt that something was horribly wrong here, and didn't doubt that she would always feel that way, but sitting about moping over it wasn't going to solve anything.

"Well, perhaps we ought to try and find someone who knows what's happening around here," she said, casually rubbing her eye while trying to covertly wipe away a tear. "Or, if absolutely no one knows any better than we do, then maybe we ought to try and find someone else just to prove that there is someone else. I saw some people walking along just here from the field; I wonder where they all went off to...."

"Then at least there are people, that much we know." Caterpillar replyed; he couldn't sense anyone nearby, but that may be because the city was very unusual and not like anything he had encountered before.

"Did you see which direction they went?" He asked her while looking down another dark street with suspicion. There was something just not quite right about this city; but he couldn't figure out exactly what it was, other than the fact it just randomly appeared of course.

"We have two options; to continue exploring this city... or to stay here; as someone is bound to come by sooner or later." He said, though mostly to himself.

((I'm almost done with the other introductory post, I'll just post it when I'm finished.))

((Okay, this be the introductory post for my OC character.))

The Professor was working on something new. Her mechanical hands worked quickly at piecing together the unusual looking contraption. The thin metalic fingers were an invention of her own; the combination of mechanic and organic. Beautiful.

At least she thought she had invented them; infact she was having a bit of trouble understanding what was going on at the moment. She was quite sure her laboratory had always been here... or had it? She stopped for a moment and looked around at the dimly lit lab; it was full of all manner of clockwork and steam machines, it was also quite a large laboratory; had she always been here?

Thinking for a moment and putting her hand to her chin, she tried to recall her name; but all she knew was that she was the Professor.

"I wonder... what's outside?" She asked while looking at her pocket watch; almost seeming like she was talking to it. "Lets go check shall we?"

Leaving her lab she found herself in a dull and empty street; looking back she noted her laboratory was quite a big and slightly creepy looking building; she hoped she wouldn't misplace it once she began exploring the city. Moving onwards into the streets, she began to realize she had no idea what this city was.

"How can I live somewhere; but not know the place at all?" She said, talking to herself as she often did. At least... she thought she often did; it seemed like something she would do... or did it?

"Hmmm... how very odd."

((Sweet! I like her. ^-^ ))

"This way," Alice said, extending her arm and her second finger along with it. This was the first time all day that she had said anything with absolute certainty, but that certainty wavered considerably when she realized that she was pointing down the darkest, most dangerous-looking street out of all the ones they faced.

She slowly lowered her arm and said nervously, "But maybe we should just wait for someone to come here instead of going down there." This time, her fear was winning over her curiosity.

((Thanks. ^_^ Now we just need more people to post.))

"Changing your mind almost instantaneously will get us nowhere." Caterpillar said in a more harsh tone; but it was the truth, they'd have to figure out what to do soon.

However he did understand that she was scared; infact the street Alice had pointed too was the one he hadn't been keen on himself. Trust a human to pick the most dangerous looking route. Sighing he moved closer to the streets entrance; but only to check if he could see further into the gloom.

As he had expected it was hard to tell what could be lurking in the shadows; this most certainly wasn't a fun venture. He was also already beginning to miss his hookah. Caterpillar turned to face Alice again.

"I don't suggest this way... unless you're adamant about it."

"I'm getting that feeling again," Alice said, pointedly not answering his question. She took a few steps closer so she was at his side, and then a few more after that. "That feeling like I know this place, like I've been here before, only I don't know how. Like it's something I dreamed up."

This was the thought that worried her most, although perhaps it shouldn't have; after all, if she had dreamed it up, shouldn't she know what these dark and eerie streets had in store?

Through what seemed like blackness, she saw an even darker shape moving some distance down-- it was more or less shaped like a human. Alice wasn't sure what came over her, but she directed herself toward the shape and started to run.

"Wait!" Caterpillar shouted after her as Alice ran into the dark street; what was she thinking? Anything could be hiding down there; and infact he did believe something was down there.

What worried him was what it could be; surely if it had been something friendly it would of made its presence known to them; why was it hiding in the darkness? And why had Alice decided to run into the shadows?

Human's are so very unpredictable; but he couldn't just let her go by herself, he was sure she was the key to whatever was going on with the world, that much he could sense.

"Don't go running off on your own!" Caterpillar said strictly and began to follow her.

Alice slowed to a jog, then a walk, and then she stopped altogether; she had lost sight of the shadow, and now as she turned in a full circle to get her bearings, what little light had remained was gone altogether. No shadow, no Caterpillar-- no Alice. Where was she? Certainly no longer in the street.

There was a voice echoing in her head-- it must be in her head; it was calm and kind, but low, stern, like that of a doctor or a professor. He asked: "To whom am I speaking?"

She felt compelled to answer. "Alice." She didn't ask his name.

"Wake up, Alice."

Her eyes were closed. She opened them and stared up at blurry, bright lights. Or perhaps it was just one light, copied over by haziness of her mind. Someone was bending over her-- surely the owner of the voice-- but the light behind him was so bright she couldn't see his face. She closed her eyes again.

They opened to darkness, and the strange figure had returned. "Hello?" Alice called. She felt shaky, far more so than before: What had just happened? Where had she gone? "Who's there?" she asked. Casting a glance behind her, she called softly, "Caterpillar?"

Caterpillar pulled Alice back a little by her sleeve; away from the shadowy figure. "Why did you just run off like that?" He asked her, but was more concerned with what had made her suddenly stop running; something odd had happened at that moment to Alice, but he was unsure what.

"You didn't reply for a while... why?" Caterpillar said before she could answer the first question.

Looking toward the shadows he could now tell there was definitley someone there; but whoever it was seemed to be being rather cautious of them.

"And you... show yourself!"

The Professor had been minding her own business at first, but then a girl had run towards her and then... well she wasn't quite sure what had happened for a few moments. But now some rather tall and quite demanding Caterpillar had come into the picture. This was very odd... or perhaps it wasn't.

She slowly moved closer to them; at least close enough for them to be able to see her. The Professor put her hands together, making a clinking sound.

"Hello there."

((Is that okay?))

((Yep!!))

Alice gasped at the caterpillar's touch, and again at the soft metallic clinks from the opposite end of the street-- the sound was coming from the shadowy figure's hands. And as the figure removed itself from the shadows, it took the shape of a young-looking woman, only with bits and pieces that were glimmering in the dim light-- and far from human. Immediately she backed away from the woman, bumping into Caterpillar as she did so, but too scared to think of apologizing. For the moment, her thoughts on the silhouette and voice and bright, blurry lights were thrust to the back of her mind.

"Who are you?" she asked softly, trying to mask the nervous shake in her voice. "Where did you come from?"

Caterpillar himself was a little wary of this new person; she didn't seem completely human, even though she obviously was a human. For a creature to be two things at once was rather odd, especially as some of her seemed mechanical. As he was more concerned with the newcomer he (although slightly annoyed) didn't scold Alice for bumping into him. But she had asked the exact question he would of.

"Me?" The Professor asked, tilting her head to one side slightly. "I'm the Professor. Quite unsure what my name is though; I think I lost it somewhere," She sighed. "I came from my laboratory; this city is quite strange isn't it? I'm rather lost... I'll never find my name at this rate."

Smiling; she observed the other two. "What about you guys?"

"Caterpillar, and this is Alice." Caterpillar replyed, and then whispered to Alice; "She's a little unusual, isn't she?" He was unsure what to make of her at the moment to tell the truth. The Professor just nodded to them, though he could tell she was curious about them too.

Alice nodded vigorously in agreement with the caterpillar. She was more than a little unusual; outside of the mysterious overnight city, she was most likely the strangest thing Alice had ever seen. Still, as Caterpillar introduced the two of them to the woman, Alice got a hold of propriety and gave a quick, nervous curtsy. She wished desperately to know what was going on here, but she knew that she wasn't going to find out anything if she was rude to every terrifying person she met.

"You... live here?" she asked, daring to look around again at the gloomy buildings and dirty streets. How could anyone live here? "How long have you had a building here? We rather thought this city just sprang up in the night."
PostPosted: Sun Feb 07, 2010 5:39 pm

The Professor pondered for a moment. "Hmmm; you know I'm not sure... it seems like I've been here for a long time, but I can't recall anything before today." She walked closer to them. "Its like... there's a haze," she said looking up for a moment, before moving right infront of them. "I can't quite understand it yet." She took out a pocket watch on a long chain.

"Even my watch doesn't seem to know, also its lost the time; poor thing, I think it needs to find it again." The Professor grinned; it looked quite creepy, though she didn't mean it to be. "Its nice to meet you two, you're the first people I've come across."

"We haven't found anyone else either," The Caterpillar was calm as usual; he couldn't sense any malice from her, though he noted that Alice was a little scared. "and your information doesn't tell us anything." He added, sounding bored. "I'm beginning to think no one knows where this city came from, even the inhabitants."

He observed the Professor for a moment before saying; "Maybe you appeared when the city did."

Alice's eyes widened and she looked at the caterpillar in awe. What a concept...! "Do you think it's possible?" she asked, venturing to speak a little louder. She glanced at the Professor and bit her lip, turning her head quickly away. The woman certainly seemed like the kind of person who might appear out of nowhere....

Suddenly she realized that she was being very ridiculous about this whole thing. So the woman had a few mechanical pieces, and maybe she wasn't playing with a full deck of cards, but she hadn't threatened them, or at least not yet. Alice, don't be rude for no reason, she told herself, and took a deep breath to calm her nerves.

"Perhaps we could help each other," she said, her voice still small, but a little less timid. "Maybe if you could try to help us find out why this city's here, we could try to help your watch find the time."
