"Well," Layla grinned over at Yulu and shrugged, "I guess our chances of Impressing the queen are as good as anyone else's..." Oh, unless Yulu liked girls. Her appearance did fit with that stereotype, the woman trying to be a man, the kind of girl who was scorned in traditional Telgar... Still, she liked Yulu no matter who Yulu liked, it wasn't as if anyone chose to be queer after all. You couldn't help the way you were made, just like she couldn't help being such a wimp.

"I guess I am," she went on with a giggle as Yulu's other words registered, "but just wait until something scary happens, I'll leap behind you like a shot!" And Yulu would make whatever it was go away... right? Yulu was tough, she could handle every day scary things like a drunk guy getting overly aggressive, or a crowd of girls laughing at her for thinking any dragon would even consider choosing her.

"Anyway," Layla sighed wistfully and looked back out at the eggs. "I hope one of them wants me," she murmured. "Whatever kind of dragon it is... I just want to be chosen." She wanted to be wanted more than she wanted any particular colour of dragon, or for that dragon to have any particular temperament. Just to be chosen. Just to be loved. That was what she wanted.

"I think everyone wants that feeling. We all want to know that somewhere out there is something that will love us and only us, a sense of pure dedication and devotion. That's what most riders get when they Impress, and I'm sure together both of us will find out what it means. Our odds can't be that bad on the sands, even if this clutch turns away from us. There will always be others, and you're young enough you may stand a few times before you will even have to worry about aging out. You have a few Turns left."

Yulu shifted the flitts in her arms, their weight growing heavy as Hinalle appeared to have decided that since she couldn't get free she would have to be difficult, and she looked over at the little Gold on her shoulder. Song had been quiet during most of their conversation, though now little waves of hunger slowly leaked from her tiny mind. The little bits of meat that had been put into her gullet only a little while before didn't seem to be the cure for what ailed, and Song was withering from her want of eating.

"But I do think we should head on back, as much as I want to stay and look at the eggs. The Queen could return at any minute and we'd be ready for skinning if she caught us, not to mention these three I have are starting to protest that they're hungry again. Seems like the little bit from before wasn't enough so I'll be needing to trek back into the kitchens."

"Right," Layla stepped away from the crack reluctantly; technically peeking at the eggs was allowed, but that didn't mean all queens were happy to put up with it. Understandable she supposed, she wouldn't enjoy being some kind of attraction for sevendays on end.

"You're right, I've got time, you must have at least a couple of turns left yourself?..." Unless she was twenty or so and just looked a bit younger. she really hoped that wasn't the case, she'd feel so foolish! "This way back then," Layla forced herself to turn back down the corridor without hurrying back for a last peek at the eggs. "Say... Yulu?" she spoke up again a short distance away from the crack, glancing nervously at the other girl. "We can stand close together at the touching and the hatching, right? You don't mind?" She didn't want to get in her way, but she did want the reassurance of somebody who seemed so totally confident. Maybe a bit of that assurance would transfer to her somehow. It was worth hoping, she supposed.

"I've got about three turns left in me, should I not Impress this time around, though I'd rather not be left on the sands when the time comes. I don't really mean I want to be a young rider, I'd rather just not be the oldest out of my current group."

There was a hint of chuckle in her voice as Yulu thought about being an odd twenty turn while everyone else was less then sixteen. She would seem so ancient to all of them, but that was alright so long as she had a dragon at her side. Yulu was going to let those thoughts keep going until they got back, though they quickly stopped as Layla asked a serious question in regards to the day of the hatching.

A thin smile broke over Yulu's lips, not her usual smirk or the grin she wore around Tofir, but an honest smile. It was very rare, almost a treasure, and she softly nodded her head before opening her mouth to speak.

"Of course you can stand beside me, because that seems to be the spot where you belong."

She didn't say anything more, not wanting to cheapen her words, and so the two returned to the kitchen in a friendly silence.
