BATTLE SOLO

Breath heavy, Kyung panted as he ran down the narrow, winding alleyways of the Imperial City. He was in panic. Sheer, unadulterated fear of what would happen to him if he were caught. It was broad daylight, and yet, his life had never been in more danger. That was, after one discounted the times he visited his step mother. But, that was something he couldn’t control. This was nothing like the pitiful attempts his stepmother often attempted to end his life; this was a true situation of life or death.

Only one would escape alive from this place, not both.
As he rounded the corner, he sharply inhaled as he realized his mistake. It was a dead end. He had essentially shut himself to his doom because he wasn’t familiar with the area. Heart pounding in his chest, he quickly turned on his heels to see the shadow of his pursuer first rounding the same damn corner and then their actual body. It was impossible to hear anything, the sound of his racing heart echoing in his own ears. Swallowing, he looked around him for something to use as a weapon or shield but found to his dismay, just dirt and trash littering the ground. When his assailant rounded the corner as well, he took a tentative step back and immediately regretted it. The second his back was against that wall, he would die a horrible death. He had to think of something! Someway to free himself from this situation.

As the hulking brute of a Lunarian chasing finally came to a more appropriate prey-stalking type of walk, the blood drained out Kyung’s face leaving him in a ghostly pallor. In all his years of living, he had never seen one quite as terrible in appearance as the black lunarian only an arm’s length away from him. He couldn’t decide what was worse, the large necklace around the Legionnaire’s throat made of skulls that would probably continue to grow by one tonight, or the large sword in his hand.

“‘Ello pretty. Cain’t run ‘way fro’ me now.” Giving Kyung a grimace of a smile, he raised his sword. “Been lookin’ at me necklace? You like eet? Made from the skulls of som’ scummy nobles liken yo’self.” He bared his teeth, at Kyung. “Reckin’ I should give you mah name. Cao Xin, the Legionnaire’s butcher at yo’ service Masta’ Kyung.” The large male gave a blood curdling laughter before taking a slow step towards Kyung. He would enjoy picking the meet off that pale one’s skull. Maybe he’d even wrap up the body and send it as a gift to the b*****d’s father. Licking his lips, he took another step towards Kyung. He could already see the blood painting the walls; tonight would be easy picking.

Standing there frozen in fear, he slowly came to his senses as something familiar stirred in his sleeve. Pulling back his sleeve, he couldn’t help but smile softly as he spotted his pet and familiar Nemu. It was so easy to forget what one had in one’s sleeve sometimes. However, his eyes narrowed ever so gently with worry. Something was off about her, she lacked her usual aura of coolness. The affectionate touch of a pet python was gone, and instead, it was replaced by the frigidity of a hunter. He watched with horror as she rose up and gave a threatening hiss towards Cao Xin standing across from him. Before he could even reach out to stop her, the snake threw itself at Kyung’s assailant. As Nemu seemed to fly through the air, Kyung let out a shout of despair. She was going to die at the hands of that monster!

Cao Xin let out a shout of surprise. Taking his claymore, he gave a long swing of the blade in an attempt to cut the snake into two pieces. Instead, Nemu landed on the flat of the blade and quickly slithered up to wrap herself around his wrist. Giving the man’s exposed fingers several bites, she quickly disappeared up his sleeve. “Wot in the? She’s up in me sleeves! GET OUT!” He shouted, waving his arms widely trying to force the snake out, temporarily forgetting Kyung who was just a sword swing’s length away from him. Dropping his weapon on the ground, he took a look at his painfully throbbing knuckles. And as he felt her cool scales press against his own scales while she crawled higher up his arm, his alarm rose. Taking his jacket off, he tossed it on the floor. “******** SNAKE!” He shouted, stomping on the jacket in an attempt to kill Nemu. If she was even in there.

Kyung stared, not quite comprehending the situation. His snake seemed to be apprehending the man on her own. He was at a loss for what to do. He knew, however, his primary concern was to get Nemu off and away from the Legionnaire as soon as possible. Yet, at the same time, to simply rush in would be folly on it own.

Before Kyung could even think more on the subject, a sudden chill hit him. It was a feeling familiar to him, familiar to all those who were companions of the dead. As the tendrils of cold sank deeper in his bone, to the very marrow, Kyung couldn’t help but visibly tremble. He let off a low moan of discomfort. Then, his whole back went numb as the air behind him turned frigid cold. He could barely breath in the presence of this spirit; it was no weak spirit. No, this was something anchored to Lunaria by a strong emotion such as Rage, sorrow, vengeance, or even simple blood lust. When the numbness spread across his cheek and spin, his breathing quickened. Looking up at the ‘Butcher’ Cao Xin, Kyung was shocked to realize that the legionnaire had not noticed the change in air. He was still trying to find Nemu.
The hair on the nape of his neck stood up as he felt a brush of cool air hit the sensitive skin. And then, he heard it. It’s voice, the sound of heat spiraling up from a water’s surface. And, it rang deeply inside him. Moving every part of his being, it called out to him.

Embrace me….

Use me… I will lend you my power….

Let me feel alive again…. I can kill him, and you can live.

And before Kyung could respond, a sudden chill took his heart and spread through out his limbs. His eyes widened, and he tried to shout words of protest, but none came out. It was like being a puppet, someone else was controlling his movements. He watched as his legs ran with surprising speed. It was faster, more nimble than what he could ever run. Suddenly, his hand was reaching down to grab the claymore with one hand. Taking the sword in two hands, he let out a carnal roar before giving a mighty swing that sent Cao Xin’s head flying with a spray of blood painting everything crimson. The speed of the swing had left Cao Xin no time to respond and stuck on that decapitated head was the butcher’s look of shock just seconds before his demise.

The strength in his arms, had allowed him to cut through the bone and muscle like butter. One clean cut. When Cao Xin’s body fell to the ground with a loud thud, the claymore also dropped from his hands. And suddenly, he was kneeling down in the pool of blood to paint his fingers red. Raising his hands up to his face, he pressed his fingertips under his eyes to form four red dots before making crimson lines across his face akin to kabuki makeup.

When that was finished, he felt the cold receding from his body as he regained control over his body. The air was still chilly around him, hinting that the vagrant spirit had not left yet. Looking down at his clothes, he gaged at the site of all that blood. Finding a relatively clean spot on his sleeve, he wiped the blood ‘warpaint’ off his face and turned to address the spirit.

”Name yourself!” He shouted, clearly distraught by what had just happened. And then, he heard its voice again. Faint, but just as powerful as before.

Haruka… My name is Oshiro Haruka. Since you have used my power, I now seek something in return.

Kyung’s eyes narrowed with unease. He had heard of this before. Spirits demanding pay for their ‘services.’ Recalling the horror stories of spirits retailing by taking over one’s body and mutilating it to an inch of death, he proceeded cautiously. ”What will you desire as trade of your services Haruka?”

Hair. Your hair. I want long hair. Give me your hair and comb. I want that which I could never have....

And before he could protest, the heat escaped from his body as Haruka took control once more. She walked towards Cao Xin’s dead body and rummaged through the pockets before pulling out a small knife. She took the elegant gold comb that had been a gift to Kyung and threw it in the pool of blood. And taking Kyung’s hair in hand, she took the knife and cut through the long strands before tossing it in a pile above the comb. At that moment, the pool of blood was engulfed in a slow burning cold fire and Kyung regained control of his body.

He watched in horror as the flames licked across the golden comb and the strands of cut hair. He could care less about his hair, but the comb! ”No!” He shouted. Reaching for the comb, he quickly pulled back in pain as one of the pale blue flames licked across his palm and sent shearing pain through. Pulling back, he watched helplessly as the fire continued to burn.

Kyung blinked slowly, cradling Nemu in his arms. Ten or so minutes had passed and the fire was dying now. Except for the small pile of ashes where his hair had been in a pile, nothing was left.

Slowly getting up, he gave the pile a forlorn look before slowly making his way home. He would have to apologize to Xiu later. But first, there was the matter of his bloodied clothes and disheveled appearance.
