"Maybe." Zach again agreed. He didn't think so. Why would Rene get married? She was a grouch and didn't really like people, even now.
"Never!" Rene laughed at him. Oh noes!

"Daddy says girls don't like him anyway, but it'd be cool," Izzy shrugged. Zach would live with her all the time and they could play, because his creepy brother would be an adult by then.
Henri just laughed, sliding down and out from Rene's beating.
"Ah, so mean to me, ami."

"Your Daddy's a doof." Zach assured her. "A big old doof."
Rene grinned and gently punched his cheek. "Mean's all I know how to be, buddy."

"Hey, my daddy's not old," Izzy said, only slightly offended (and not enough to stop her work), "He a young daddy."
Henri snorted and bapped at a wing.
"Ah, oui. So mean."

"Okay, he's a young doof." Zach amended. He started carving a sand octopus, to replace the one that had escaped.
"Very." Rene bapped back. She was quite relaxed. Surprisingly so! "Hideously mean."

"Yeah," Izzy agreed. Sometimes Daddy was a doof.
Out of nowhere, Henri had a half-brilliant and half-terrible idea.
"Come to dinner with me on Saturday."

"Doofy." Zach said. "C'mon, lets swim."
Rene tipped her head. "What kind of a dinner?"

"Okay!" Izzy said, crab and castle already forgotten. Everyone had been turned off by the fishy stink of low tide, but Izzy was not to be discouraged. She laughed and ran in, water splashing up around her legs.
Henri shrugged.
"Dinner. I think we could both use a night away from children."

Zach splashed in, also not worried about fish smell. Yay, swimming!
Rene squished her mouth to one side. "It couldn't hurt." She said, thinking. Hmmm. "S'long as you pick the place."

Izzy laughed and touched his head-bobble.
"You float so good!"
Henri nodded and plopped back down on his chair, sitting on the edge.
"Would you like something blindingly fancy, or should we go out for hamburgers?" Henri did both, although not often. Izzy always got to pick the place, and she only liked the "really thin sketti with the oil" at the "fancy-dancy place".

Zach puffed a bit at the touch to his headpoof. He didn't like it touched! But, it was Izzy. "Just don't touch it so much." Zach told her. "I don't like it touched."
"Eh, whatev." Rene shrugged. "I don't go out much."

"Okay!" Izzy agreed, "You can touch my mantle, if it'll make you feel better!" She turned to her side and displayed the squishy flesh.
Henri just smiled.
"I'm French, Rene. We are pompous and arrogant. Choose a place, or we will be going to a restaurant that will require you wear a gown that you undoubtedly will not."

Zach reached out to touch. He would if she said he could! He was a curious boy, after all.
"Psssh, a gown that I don't own." Rene rolled her eyes. "Some place good, not too expensive, that I can wear pants to. Okay?"

The mantle was cold and slimy, not to mention squishy. Frankly, it was much like a slug.
"See? It's gross."
Henri laughed.
"Of course. I wouldn't dare bring you into one of those stuffy old places. Anyway, I can cook better than any of those goddamn pompous asses, if I do say so myself." He swelled with pride, but his facade cracked and he smiled and laughed again.

"It's not that gross." Zach said. "It's on you, isn't it? You're not gross."
"I'm sure you can." Rene assured him. Hmmm, what was this going to be? A date-date, or just a dinner?
