I have to say I agree with Edward, sex does sell. It doesn't waste parts of books at all because if you cut out the sex...you lose part of what these people are. Sex is a basic Human function, natural...so why miss it out? Plus I love it!

PS. Linda, sorry to be a pain but I've just been revamping the rule thread, and can you please try and be as literate as possible. Thank you!! whee

Okay okay, I didn't mean to offend you, just punctuation-wise with the Capital Letters. 3nodding
Anyway, Edward, do you think a woman could write good M/M sex?
PostPosted: Thu Jan 21, 2010 6:11 pm

Yes, I do. I have read many stories with good M/M scenes written by women. Of course, "good" is a subjective term. Everyone has their own opinion of what makes something good. Personally, I think a good M/M scene should be factually and anatomically accurate, or at least plausible. It should be about more than just the actions that are taking place. It should reach the reader on an emotional level.

By those standards, I would have to say that I find more good M/M sex scenes written by women than by men. Men tend to focus on the visual and physical aspects. Maybe I'm just really in touch with my feminine side, lol, but I like a story that engages me on a deeper level.

Hm as someone whose actually had to go through approval from agencies/publishers and such.. I'd have to ask more on that subject of what can/can't happen in the books .. I have an alternate universe with fictional countries, but would any of that matter? I have one book where the girl is 16 (adult there) and the guy is 18 who get married then have a baby (didn't write out acts, but there's no 'other' way to get pregnant in that world, if you catch what I mean) -head tilts- .. so it has to be going along with whichever country's legal age is with publishing?

I could write out erotica, but I rather shy away from it heh.. I live in a very conservative part of America, though I suppose it could be worse.. I do have a lot of characters of all sexualities and genders.. twil be interesting to see if anything's understood as it should be ^^;

Oh, and that is an appealing cover you made Edward. I like how it looks
PostPosted: Fri Jan 22, 2010 12:09 am

I'm not really an expert on publishing, especially on what other countries do. I know that in the US, all the publishers that I looked at have a list of unacceptable elements -- No minors in sexual situations, no sex with animals (werecreatures okay) or the dead (vampires okay), no rape for titillation, no bodily functions -- Most of it has to do with erotica. As long as there aren't any erotic scenes involving the girl, I don't think it will matter. If she's an adult in her world, then it should be fine, even if the sex is implied.

Do you mean the cover in my sig? I didn't make that one. That was made by Coyote Shadow Studio, my publisher's very talented cover artist.

I think you're in a different realm of publishing than I am ^^; so I thought I should ask .. ah, yes, that list of unacceptable elements is what I meant. Thank you for explaining. No, there aren't erotic scenes, though I do have a honeymoon scene where they're in the bedroom nervously trying to figure out how to get started (undressing mostly, then after that the phrasing get vague, but not enough so that it would be impossible to understand what happened, plus she does end up pregnant later, so yeah) It's something definitely to be remembered for later about doing so books don't have to be rewritten to fit the standards

Yeah that's tricky so I get confused easily.. Age of consent is 16, but until you're 18 the parents can still cry rape even if their kid willingly had sex with someone else (there's another clause about being a certain amount of years older too, but it can be tricky in the US cause it varies from state to state then federally)

Ah, I see -nods- tis a good one

I'm almost finished with my Easter/Ostara story. I should finish it up this weekend, especially since we don't have to go visit family on Sunday. 5 feet of snow in California is keeping everyone at home. It's too bad, but I need the writing time. Now, if I could just think of a title for the darn thing.

Speaking of titles, I decided on the title for the third book in the Suburban Fantasy series. It's going to be called Will Work For Blood and my publisher and I are talking a tentative November release date. I haven't even finished writing the outline yet, lol. So far it's got sex, dancing, and drama as my vampire main character struggles to find a job in a failing economy. And I now have ideas for several more books. Yay! I see selkies and faerie princesses and werepossums in the future, lol.

Finished my Easter/Ostara story. Still no title, but I'll come up with something when I go back to edit. The call doesn't end until Feb. 20th, so I have some time.

I'm now working on a Steampunk story for a contest. I've never written Steampunk before, so we'll see how it goes. If it's any good, I might expand the story and try to get it published. That's what I did with Slave to the Crown -- it was for a contest here on Gaia.

Congratulations on finishing the Easter/Ostara story
Heh I know how titles can be the trickiest part of the writing to do..
I hope you can find one you'll be happy with
Oh, sometimes the stories started on whims or side projects can turn out to be quite fun to play with -nods- I hope it goes well for you. I haven't written steampunk, though I've heard the term thrown around a lot on Gaia when requesting items

Thank you. Looking back over it, though, I discovered I hate the ending, so I'm rewriting it, lol. That's what I get for writing drunk. (Kidding, I don't drink.)

Titles drive me nuts. Some are easy, but others just won't come. I've been trying to think of a title for the third book in my novel series for more than a year now, and I have absolutely no ideas. *headdesk*

Some of my best works to date have been fun side projects, so I'm looking forward to seeing where this one goes. The one thing I don't like about trying out sub-genres that I have no experience in, either as a reader or writer, is that I don't know if I'm doing it right. My writing style is usually very modern and straightforward, but for some reason this has taken on a Victorian flavor, and when I hear my characters talking in my head, they all have British accents, lol.

lol I have that same problem when I look back at the books I wrote with my old mode .. (writing til I passed out from exhaustion) .. g'luck re-writing it

Oh -nods- yes, I have the same problem with titles as well.. some come okay, but others (like this series I'm working on now) are really hard to put an attractive title on

Yay for side projects turning into fun full books!
And yes, writing in a new environment always gets me confused to.. maybe that's why I stick to the fantasy umbrella with action/school/adventure/drama etc under it ^^'
Oooh -nods- sometimes that happens to me too, but I try to use that as part of their personality.. it can be pretty interesting when that happens

Thanks, I think I have it rewritten satisfactorily now. Still needs a title, though, lol.

Writing in a new world makes me write slowly, too, since I have to consider how all the details fit into the new setting. That's a good umbrella to write under; I play with those a lot.

Wo0t! January is over and I made my goal of writing at least 500 words a day. My daily average was 1049, so I did pretty good if I do say so myself. I finished two stories, got one sent off to my publisher, and should have the other edited and sent off in a week or two.

Gah! I need to stop looking at writing contests. I found another one I want to enter, about how opposites attract. It's not on Gaia, it's on a site called Storywrite, and while I find the instruction for the contest a bit hinky, it has inspired me to re-enter the beloved world of my epic masterpiece, Broken Wings.

I've been thinking a lot about Broken Wings lately. The entire 163k word novel is still up on FictionPress because I don't know if I want to butcher it down to a publishable length. Most publishers won't look at anything over 120k. I don't want to cut it down, and I don't want to take it off FP because (and I know this is a stupid reason) the story has almost a quarter of a million views and if I remove it, those stats will be lost. Stupid, I know, but those are impressive numbers.

It also draws in a lot of viewers to my FP account, where I have links to my published works on my profile page, so maybe I'll get a few sales from it, too. And, the story has been nominated for a SKoW Award as best completed slash, Jak and Akitra. Voting should begin soon and I'll post a link when it does so you all can go vote, lol.

I think what I might like to do is write short stories and novellas set in the world of Broken Wings that address loose ends I left untied in BW, expand on the lives of minor characters, or just happen in the place at the same time, like the story I'm working on now, A Solitary Flame. I'll leave BW up as a free read forever, and as promotion for these shorts and novellas, which I'll publish as e-books. I might even offer a cleaned up and edited version of BW as a PDF download for $.99 or something like that, if someone wants a nice version to keep on their e-reader or Kindle or ipad or whatever. That's what I'm thinking of doing, anyway.

Yay! My e-book, The Vampire Next Door, was released today! I spent much of the day doing various promo tasks -- Tweeting, blogging, updating webpages, etc. Got almost 900 words written today, bringing my total for the year to 37,534 words.

I also did some creative promo work for Broken Wings. I figured if I'm going to leave it up as a promo piece, I should make it easy for people to find. I made some banners with a bit of photo-manipulation - Not the best, but they're pretty, I think. You can see the cover art HERE and one of the banners HERE down below my list of published works.
