Steampunk will turn into Dieselpunk, and then after ww2 the Nuclear age begins. There will be a nuclear war which will kill nearly everyone, except a small segment of the population who will survive for the purpose of dystopian novels. And zombies, the nuclear radiation will somehow create zombies.
I do not see steampunk as ever progressing to cyberpunk. But cold-war era atomic age type stuff, definitely.
