Listen to bauhaus.. the sisters of mercy.. even london after midnight. NOT a metal genre. It is very downbeat most of the time. I think "gothic" is used in this genre to express the same moody feelings gothic writing expresses (not always moody either). If you havent heard those bands I sujest you check them out.. they could be classified as rock I supose but they do have differnces. PS Manson is not a gothic band either.

I wasn't saying I thought metal was 'gothic' music. I was saying most people say 'gothic' instead of metal. I still don't think those bands are 'gothic' bands. How can a genre of music be named after architecture? See? This is why I despise labels.

There is also gothic literature. You should know that. Try comparing the context and mood of the songs to the definition of gothic literature.
