I can say "Warsaw"... does that count?

The weird thing about Polish is that it's a Slavic language written in a Latin alphabet instead of Cyrillic. So while I can't say I really "know" any Polish formally, I can read the words phonetically and actually be able to guess somewhat accurately at their meaning, since I know Russian.

No. You must be able to say W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie. wink

Ash: about half Slavic languages are written using Latin alphabet talk2hand

W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie. wink
what!?
I can't read that, but I can listen to this:
Akurat - Lubię Mówić Z Tobą
Kiedy z serca płyną słowa
Uderzają z wielką mocą
Krążą blisko wśród nas ot tak
Dając chętnym szczere złoto
I dlatego lubię mówić z Tobą
I dlatego lubię mówić z Tobą
Każdy myśli to co myśli
Myśli sobie moja głowa
Może w końcu mi się uda
Wypowiedzieć proste słowa
I dlatego lubię mówić z Tobą
I dlatego lubię mówić z Tobą

even though I have no idea what they are saying

Was this a comment to the movies or the fact that the lyrics of the song show it's a love song where the singer says he likes to talk to (probably) some girl?

In all honesty - English is much easier for Poles than Polish for English native speakers.
Even if we have problems with proper pronounciation of th our tongues are still better used to speak all different sounds than your tongues to speak our sounds (like in that extreme sentence about a beetle in Szczebrzeszyn).

The hardest things in English for an average Pole is the formation of sentences. In English you always have it the same - verb and noun is always in the same place. While in Polish we have much more freedom in the formation of sentences - we can shuffle the words around.

Thank goodness I never tried to learn Polish... I think my tongue would still be in knots.

I was going to study in Växjö for a year and take Swedish for my college foreign language credits, but that fell through so I still only know English crying

That makes sense...it also helps me to realize I'd probably never be able to speak Russian either, or any other language from that area of the world. emo

Luckily pretty much everywhere speaks or understand english.
