I think the Anachronism should be...
  an Airship.
  a Flying City.
  something else entirely.

I say flying city, just because think of it-

You're on the land, you know, having a picnic OR SOMETHING. And then you glance up, and over the hills you see the the tippiesttop tops of towers peeking over the horizon, with the sun shining behind it, illuminating it as it gradually emerges fully.

You make a pretty convincing argument, there.

But then again, the image of the prow of an airship breaking apart the cloud cover as it swoops towards you is pretty majestic too...

My mind! It is unsure what to think! D:

But! If the city was large enough, it could serve as a dock for other airships! There could be a constant gaggle of ships docked at the towers, or some such! Entire DISTRICTS WITHIN THE TOWN~ Like oh there's the Museum district~ The factories~ The shopping district~ The docks! Of course there would be need of engineers to keep it all running beneath the city, where there would be an entirely different feel about it!

Ahh, sorry, my imagination runs wild. It is your guild, in the end! 4laugh

Whatever form the Anachronism takes, it'd be accompanied by the British Expeditionary Fleet and any other airships affiliated with the Guild.

I guess my pickle is this:

Whilst I love all the various forms the Anachronism takes, I'm not rightly sure which to go with.
I, too, rather like the idea of the Anachronism being a flying city ~ it would be truly fantastic ~ but I've got myself the task of designing this here Anachronism, and the Engineer part of my brain insists on it making sense. And a flying city, whilst fun, doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Sure, you get a nice view; but not only is it an incredibly dangerous place to be, if you don't fall off you'll be subject to high winds, cold temperatures and relatively little oxygen. Not that pleasant. The city could be constantly low-flying, but then why fly at all? Why not settle on a nice island instead, maybe have a few flying docks, plenty of room to spread your buildings out, and can build all sorts of laboratories underwater.
Whether or not 'tis a nice place to live, the very idea of anything of significant city-worthy size flying boggles the brain.

If someone can think of way round this that doesn't resort to magic, I'd love to hear.

Right now, this is what I'm thinking:

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

It is rather big, as hopefully you can see by the various airships clustering about the top deck ~ said top deck is also clustered with various buildings, most tendering to the airships, but also those catering for the passengers and crew of such airships. Under the glass dome are also various buildings of a Museum-like nature.
Whilst not a city per se, it is certainly better than any cruise airship.

A small city, wrapped inside a ship's hull? I'm imagining, within the hull, a number of large 'hollows' ~ inside which are built various buildings.

A rather quick sketch, showing inside hollows serving as building space, docks, and engine room.

Surely your inner engineer only needs a bit of persuasion to go Mad Science? The temptation is there, you know it.

Mad Science is Science nonetheless.
Is a ship that has swallowed a city not Mad enough?

Not nearly mad enough, when there is a madder option.

If you're worried about the atmosphere just have a pressurized dome, it'll be so much more picturesque. And taller buildings extending through the dome could act as structural support for it.

Docks would be outside the dome, and the dockhouses and customs points would have airlocks.

A domed city? That sounds remarkably sane compared to one inside a giant boat.

I agree with the Airship that swallowed a city.
