.:Damian Connell:.He turned to her with a small smile, pleased to once again hear the exotic spice of her soft voice. ”Thank you. You have a pretty name there yourself, even though it’s a bit of a mouthful.” He winked, and immediately turned and stared at the wall across the room, shocked at his breach in etiquette. Damian ran a hand through his hair and sighed. ”I could question you, but for your sake and the department’s, it’s be better if someone . . . more experienced did it. That way you don’t have to come back in for a second round of questioning and the department is spared some superfluous paper work.” he laughed at himself. The one thing he never really got the hang of in the academy was questioning a witness. He had no clue what his mental block was, it was relatively simple. He guessed it was just the variety of variables that played a part in what questions to actually ask that threw him off. Damian kept his gaze on the far wall as the nurse walked back into room with a helper in tow. ”Okay miss, before we take you for x-rays we’re going to need a brief medical history from you.” the nurse asked sweetly. Damian allowed his head to lull to one side as he only half listened to the conversation going on.
He was startled for a second when his walkie statically started talking to him. ”Tuan to Connell. 902h ETA is six minutes.” ”10-4.” Damian looked down to see two nurses wheeling Rhiannon away. He pushed himself from the wall and fell in step behind them. ”Officer, really, we’re only taking her to get x-rays, you can stay in the room. It will only take a few minutes.” she said over her shoulder. “Than you get to deal with me for a few minutes. I already told you my orders, let me do my job and I won’t interfere with yours.” he said a bit irked. They pushed her down three different hallways and Damian paused as the nurses took Rhiannon through swinging double doors and into a room labeled “X-Rays”. Damian sighed as he could feel the tingle of panic flow him, though the emotion did not belong to him.

Rhia smiled up at him, laughed softly for a moment, her laughter like the soft ringing of bells, so musical was it. Then the nurses were back, and so was the panic. She answered the questions, and provided her insurance card, from her wallet, though that was a bit difficult, as it required her to sit up, and move her legs so that she could get to her wallet within her rear pocket. She bit back a groan of pain, and looked down at her injured knee. It didn't look right. She nearly laughed at herself for the observation. Of course it didn't look right, that was obvious... it was broken. Then the nurses were wheeling her away, and they wanted him to leave her... but he didn't leave her. She looked back at him, as they swung through the double doors, her panic evident in her eyes. She smiled gratefully at him. "Just call me Rhia...." she said softly, before the nurses were telling her she'd have to strip and change into a hospital gown. She frowned. "but you're only taking an x-ray of my knee... right? There isn't anything metal or anything to interfere with the shot..." but they still wanted her to change. She looked at him, then sighed softly, sliding off the bed. She very nearly buckled again, but she bit her lip, drawing blood again, and pushed through it. She took the proffered gown, and half walked, half hopped on one leg, to the changing room. When she came out, she was out of breath, and her eyes were glazed with pain. She hobbled over to the bed once more, her bad leg dragging behind. While she'd been in there, it had felt as if something were crunching when she put weight on her leg. She slid up onto the bed, ignoring the skirt of the gown, which rode high on her thighs. "Now what?" she asked softly, folding her hands in her lap. She would not show her panic. She wouldn't.

.:Damian Connell:.Damian crossed his arms as he waited outside for her, for Rhia. His lips softened into a smile as he replayed her voice and her musical laugh in his head. He watched helplessly as the nurses forced her to walk unassisted to a changing area. Damian turned around, even though she was behind a curtain, to protect her modesty. His ears twitched and his face scrunched in sympathy as he heard all too clearly the crunching of her broken knee. ’At least that means her knee hasn’t completely set yet.’ he thought morbidly. Damian couldn’t bring himself to turn back around as he heard Rhia shift back on the bed. ”Alright, we’re just going to put this over your waist to shield it from the x-rays and move you into position. Please keep as still as you can.” one of the nurses instructed her. Damian let out a long sigh as his spine began to tingle. This was going to be a difficult moment, one, to try and explain how her knee began to set improperly if it’s too obvious on the x-ray, gotta thank the regeitive power of a werewolf for that one and two, how to explain how Rhia received the injury while being truthful and not drudging up a law suit for police brutality. Damian doubted she would press charges, but it would serve Gardin right, and the hospital might use the guise of ‘needed for her medical history’ to press charges for her. ’That’s one sure fire way to get Gardin pissed off at me. Not that he’s ever needed a reason.’ he thought as he studied the ceiling. Damian took a deep breath and snorted in disgust as the strong sterile scent of the hospital burned his nostrils. He could still feel Rhia’s panic, but her voice gave nothing away as the nurses turned on the machine. She was very brave for one so young and unaware of her true situation. Damian’s thoughts drifted to two nights in the future, when the full moon would set the night a blaze with forced shifts . . . ’Poor thing doesn’t know what true panic is . . .not yet.’ Damian closed his eyes and his head sunk toward his chest as he tried to fight back the vivid images of his first transformation. A solitary echo rolled down his spine as he clenched his arms tight, fighting back his inner wolf. It was too important to remain human for now. Rhia deserved to have someone with her now even if she might shift alone on her fist time.
Damian opened his eyes to the sight of Rhia being wheeled past him. He immediately fell in tow behind the nurses and looking down the hallway spotted the Captain walking towards them counting the room numbers. ”I’ll be there in a minute.” Damian whispered to Rhia as she entered her room and he continued to meet Captain Tuan in the hall. ”Ah, Damian, was that the witness being wheeled in there?” Tuan asked as his eyes followed the moving hospital bed. ”Yes, Sir, Rhia just came back from getting x-rays on her leg. She seems alert and should be very cooperative.” Damian reported. ”Rhia huh? Why did she need x-ray? Well no matter,” Tuan cut Damian’s explanation short, ”glad to hear she’s in relatively good health. This shouldn’t take too long. Make sure to take notes.” the Captain smiled as he patted Damian playfully on the shoulder. Damian knew his weakness and didn’t like to be prodded about it, not even from the Captain. Damian’s ears twitched with irritation as he turned and followed Captain Tuan into Rhia’s room.

Rhia watched him silently, and did as the nurses told her, without complaint, and without a sound. She wondered about him. Then they were moving again, and he was leaving her. NO!!! He said he'd be right back, but what if he wasn't... no. She wouldn't think that. She would be fine. She was always fine. She didn't need to rely on anyone, for her to be okay. She knew that. She'd been alone long enough to know that she couldn't really rely on anyone anyway. She gave a soft sigh, then turned to the door as she heard the nob turn, and looked into the eyes of the Captain. She froze, as a shudder of fear coursed through her. He was... no. It wasn't the same person. It was a different person. They had different eyes. She reassured herself this, as he stepped into the room, Damien following behind him. As the shudder of fear dissipated, something else took it's place. A long shock of pain shot down her spine, and she closed her eyes to fight through it, her breathing speeding with the effort. It felt as if she were about to split into a whole different being. But just as suddenly as it had hit her, it disappeared. She opened her eyes again, and shook her head, at the question the nurse asked her. "I... fell... and hit my knee on a step." she said softly, not wanting to cause any problems, or make anyone angry with her. "Hello... officer..." she murmured softly in greeting, before her eyes went to Damien, and stayed on him, watching him quietly.

.:Damian Connell:.The Captain paused briefly when he saw Rhia, but continued on with a smile. “Hello, I’m Captain Dan Tuan. If you’re ready, there are a few questions that I’d like to ask you.” Tuan started off, pulling out a note pad and pen from his pocket. Damian followed him in, acutely aware that something was wrong. Keeping his composure, Damian studied his esteemed Captain’s movements and the tone of his voice. He at least, seemed to be calm and going through the motions, Rhia on the other hand . . . it was a different kind of fear and dread that was flowing from her now. He turned his gaze to Rhia and found her watching him with clouded violet eyes. A jolt of emotion hit Damian as their eyes met, setting him on edge. Something wasn’t right, and the fact that the danger eluded him made Damian very nervous. His muscles began to coil, getting ready to defend himslef and Rhia from the phantom peril. Taking a deep breath he forced his body to relax. Damian glanced from the Captain back to Rhia, somehow gleaning that they may have met before . . . not on friendly terms. Damian’s head tilted to one side slightly as he searched her eyes, his left ear twitched in question, wondering what was bothering her. Damian longed to stand between Rhia and Tuan, to shield her from whatever it was that made her feel this way.
Damian listened intently to their conversation. To the practice tone with which Tuan questioned her, to the soft, enticing tone in which she responded. Damian ignored what the actual questions were and half listened to Rhia’s account of how she stumbled across the scene. Damian honed in on how the Captain’s hand shook ever so slightly as he recorded her answers and memories. Damian memorized the movements of Rhia’s hand as she nervously toyed with the sheet on her bed. He ignored the nurses walking out of the room and across the hall to the counter of the nurse’s station and inquiring when Rhia’s x-rays would be developed. Damian stood tall and forced his posture to exude calm composure as Captain Tuan closed his note pad and tucked it into his pocket. “Well that went well. I’m sorry you had to be the one see something like that. I hope you feel better and feel free to contact the station with any concerns.” he gently smiled to Rhia. Tuan then turned to Damian. “Hope you took some good notes. I’ll see you back at the station.” Tuan patted Damian on the shoulder as he exited the room. Damian scrutinized the Captain’s movements as he left. He genuinely liked the Captain, he seemed like a good man and Damian did not want to think of Tuan in a dark light, especially not involving Rhia. Damian turned back to the injured girl and his gaze softened instantly although his muscles retained their tension.

Rhia fidgeted, but answered the captain's questions truthfully, and with as many details as she could. She didn't falter once, but she still felt the now familiar fear washing through her. When he turned to leave, she couldn't help but give a soft sigh of relief. He didn't hear it, of course, and she was glad he didn't. She looked up at Damien, and smiled, tentatively, suddenly full of nerves. "Does... this mean... that I'm done?" she asked softly, unsure of whether or not she had done everything required of her. She jumped when the nurses returned, and reported that her knee had indeed been broken, and had set wrong, which was why it had been giving her so much trouble. They went through the long, excruciating process of re breaking it, and setting it properly. They offered to sedate her, but she declined, because she knew painkillers had very adverse effects on her, and she'd rather be coherent and feeling the pain, than incoherent and feeling sick. She didn't make a sound, when the worst of the pain came. She simply bit her lower lip, and knotted her hands into fists in the sheets on the bed, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. She let out her air in a great gasp when they were done. They wrapped her knee, but wouldn't do much more, and said she could go home, offering her the option of a wheel chair, or crutches. She chose the crutches. They were soon fitted to her, and she was given her clothing to change into again, the release papers signed. She was free to go home. She looked at Damien, and flushed slightly. "So... um... when is your... shift... over?" she asked softly, flushing again. "I mean... I just... wondered... if you were having to go back to the station, or if you're still supposed to be... guarding me or... what..." she murmured, trailing off, as she realized how ridiculous she sounded. She sat down on the bed slowly, and started to slip her jeans on, over the knee wrap, and under the hospital gown, but gave a soft gasp, losing hold of the pair, when she inadvertently moved her knee. She bit her lip once more, to try to keep from whimpering in pain, as her eyes filled with tears once more. She shook her head, and tried to reach the pants, but they were on the floor, and she wouldn't be able to reach them, unless she pulled her bad leg up, and grabbed hold that way, bending the injured knee. She shuddered at the thought, and just sat there for a moment, trying to think how she was going to fix the problem, without hurting herself any more than she had to.

.:Damian Connell:.The nurses flurried into the room before Damian could answer. He closed his eyes and cringed as Rhia’s broken bones cracked and groaned in protest of being set properly. Damian longed to run to her, to hold her and take away her pain. He took three steps forward before he caught himself and forced his feet to stop. He couldn’t help but be amazed that she didn’t scream or howl in pain. ’I don’t think I could take something like that . . .’ the thought flitted through his mind.
With forms signed and crutches fitted, they were left alone. Damian couldn’t help but find it endearing how Rhia flushed as she continued her inquiry. Damian let out a soft sigh as he thought carefully about their situation and took a mental inventory of his self-control. He really did want to stay with Rhia, to hold her, to comfort her, to just plain be around her . . . but he didn’t want to put her in more danger either. If something happened, if he got spooked again like he did back in the woods . . . he could seriously injure Rhia, possibly scare her to death or kill her himself. Damian cringed at the thought and visibly flinched as his inner wolf raked its claws along his nerves and composure. He was able to subdue the beast with relative ease, though Damian could feel it pacing, waiting for a weakness in the barrier to make its escape. . . but Rhia’s voice was so enticing, her gaze so soft and somehow hopeful, she was in need of protection and Damian felt the call to protect her and he would answer it, he couldn’t bring himself to leave her just yet. “Yes, this means that you’re done. All you need to do now is rest. My shift is over at four, but I don’t have to go back to the station until I need to clock out. As for guarding you, ” Damian laughed, “those weren’t exactly my orders, but if you don’t feel safe, I won’t leave you.” he sincerely whispered. There he went again, the truth just flowing from his lips. It intrigued Damian how Rhia seemed to have this power over him that caused him to be so honest. His thoughts drifted off as she began to get dressed. Damian turned and stared intently at the wall as he heard the muffled thump of her jeans falling to the ground. Damian closed his eyes knowing full well there was no way she could reach her jeans pain free. With a deep breath he walked to the foot of her bed, careful to keep his distance and his gaze upon her face. “Can I help you, or would you prefer me to call a nurse in?” he asked softly. Damian’s ears twitched as he waited for her answer, his embarrassment growing as he felt heat slowly building beneath his cheeks.

Rhia looked up at him, biting her lower lip as she thought it out. The nurses made her nervous... and he... didn't. But... wasn't it wrong of her to ask him to help her in... that way? But... it would be easier... She really didn't know what she wanted to do. Well she knew what she wanted, but she didn't know what was best. She gave a soft sigh, and nodded gratefully. "Could you help me? I don't mean to ask, but I don't want to bother the nurses... they must be busy, and I know it's an inconvenience to you but... I... you don't have to if you don't want to, or if it makes you uncomfortable..." she murmured softly, flushing again. She was such a twit. She didn't understand. She was usually so independant, so sure of herself. It didn't make any sense."I... don't want to be a bother... I've just... the last couple weeks have been... hectic... and... then there was the break in at my apartment a couple night ago... and... you really don't need or want to hear about all of my problems, I'm sure..." she said softly, trailing off as she realized she was rambling, and very near to asking him to stay with her. He just made her feel so safe, and... cared for. It was a feeling she'd gone long without. Longer than she could remember. She also felt... that he could... protect her. But that was ridiculous. No one had ever been able to protect her. Not even herself, or her parents. She gave a soft inward sigh, as she thought of that. She'd been a disappointment to them too.

.:Damian Connell:.Damian sighed, almost happy that he was allowed to help. “Don’t worry about it. ‘To serve and protect’ right?” he joked as he quoted the police motto as he walked around to the side of her bed and picked up her jeans from the tiled floor. Damian carefully pulled the fabric over her feet, he focused on gently tugging the pant leg around her injured knee without putting any pressure on the tender joint, although he failed once or twice and winced knowing her had caused her pain. After successfully pulling the leg past her knee, he tugged the other leg of the pants past her uninjured knee and left the rest of the dressing up to Rhia, her jeans now resting halfway up her thigh. Damian walked back to the foot of her bed and turned his attention to the black that rest outside the window. He thought carefully about how what to say next. The hint had been made that she wanted him to stay, a thought he couldn’t help but guiltily enjoy, but he didn’t want to over play his hand and have Rhia send him away. . . he heard the nurses scurrying down the hall and peek into the room. Damian resisted the urge to turn around and growl at the ease-dropper. He continued to gaze out the window as he gingerly picked his words. “Don’t make the mistake of thinking your problems aren’t important.” his voice barely left his lips, and grew stronger as he plainly addressed the matters at hand. “However, I do feel obligated to take you home and there is that phone call I keep taunting you with if you still want to make it.” he finished as he turned and gazed at the wall, his back to Rhia. His inner wolf nipped at his spine as Damian realized he didn’t have a car . . . a minor detail at best . . . hopefully he could come up with something before Rhia actually left the hospital . . .

Rhia flushed once more, as she felt his fingers travel gently up her legs. She knew it wasn't anything sexual, but... she couldn't help the goosebumps that covered her body, or the tingling she felt along her spine. When he was finished, she smiled gratefully and slipped carefully off the bed, putting all of her weight on the good leg, and slid her pants on over her hips, where they hung low. She frowned for a moment, and looked down at her shirt, then at the gown. The shirt revealed a lot, but it had been partially been because she was working at the bar tonight. She sighed softly, and quickly disposed of the gown, pulling on her tight t-shirt, that hugged her curves well. She grabbed her crutches and turned to walk around to face him, smiling softly. "Thanks..." she murmured softly, smiling softly at him. She couldn't help but feel... happy, and relieved that he was going to come with her. "Thank you. You don't have to feel obligated though. I'm sure you've gone well beyond your duties... but... I have to admit I'm glad you did... but... my apartment... isn't that far from here. Just a couple blocks. And I'll make the call once I get home, if you don't mind." she said softly, her eyes sparkling with laughter as she smiled at him. She knew there was someone at the door eavesdropping. She didn't know how she'd heard them, but she had. She wondered how that was possible, but shook it off.

.:Damian Connell:.Damian’s eyes softened as she stood in front of him, her musical laugh calming his inner wolf; although he struggled to disguise the frown that twitched at his lips. He sighed in defeat. “Alright, it’s whatever you want, Rhia, but you aren’t walking home with a broken knee. I’m at least calling you a cab.” Damian sternly stated as he gazed down at her. He couldn’t help but notice that her outfit hugged her body in an appealing way and mentally slapped himself for thinking it. His right ear twitched and Damian froze as he heard heavy footfalls coming down the hall, the strong musk of anger wafted into the room. He turned to the face the door, his lips twitching into a snarl, preparing his restraint for when Gardin burst into the room. “Rhia, you might want to cross the hall to the nurse’s station and have your back facing the elevator. I have a feeling that an unwanted guest is coming to pay you a visit.” he said in a low voice, hardly concealing the growl that rumbled from his throat.

Rhia froze, her legs locking painfully. Her eyes flicked from side to side, like a trapped animal, as she heard him. She smelled him. She trembled, and took a deep shuddering breath. Then she was herself again, and she straightened, her shoulders going back, her back ramrod straight, her jaw set. She looked at the door with contempt. She would not let that overbearing, horridly rude man cow her. Not this time. She was over the shock of the scene. She was... She was... she was herself again. And she wouldn't let some pompous a*****e cow her. Not this time. She would stand her ground. She'd done nothing wrong. She would walk out of there calmly, with her head held high. She turned to look at Damian. "Thank you... but... Gardin can't keep bullying me... and I can't keep being afraid... But... I don't want you getting in trouble with him, defending me. So we're going to walk out of here calmly... but I'm not leaving without you... please?" she murmured softly, her eyes pleading with him, as she held out her hand to him. "I can do this... I can... but I'd feel... safer... stronger... knowing you're there with me... I know it's a lot to ask, and I know I'm being a lot of trouble for you, but... Gardin and I... have some rather unpleasant history. I'm not sure what he will do when he sees me away from the police station... and from the way things sounded before... you're on his... s**t list too. So... walk with me, walk at a normal pace, and act like you've done nothing wrong, because you haven't... nor have I... please? I'll find someway to repay you. Anything you want. But... I'm not going to run away from him. Not this time... and I'm not letting you stay to fight my battles for me, though I know you could probably tear him to pieces..." she said softly, her eyes sparkling with laughter as she smiled at him, her hand still outstretched. She heard the nurses begin to scuttle away from the big angry police man, as he drew nearer. He was just around the corner and down the hall now. They had only seconds to make their decision, before he'd be there. Just enough time to leave the room and make it to the elevator calmly, if he agreed with her.

.:Damian Connell:.Damian looked at Rhia in awe of her strength and resolve though the emotions rolling from her were distraction enough for an echo of venomous spikes to jolt down his spine. He trembled slightly as he fought the pain that ripped throughout his body with a shudder. He was captured by the longing and playful sparkle in her violet eyes. All words eluded his grasp as he glanced at her outstretched hand, and his hand, by its own will, reached for hers. Damian’s gaze turned to the doorway as he heard Gardin crashing down the hallway, his contempt and frustration saturating the air. ‘We don’t have much time.’ he thought as his ears pulled back. Stilling starring out the door, Damian gave a nod, willing Rhia to understand that he would not abandon her, but leave with her. Taking a deep breath, he lightly took her hand, wincing a bit as stinging, fragile lightning bolts shot through his body. Damian released her hand and took one step forward; aware that there was no way she could walk on crutches while holding his hand. He made his way out the door, tranquility masking his features. He calmly pushed the down button to summon the elevator. The wheels clicked and creaked as the box was lifted from the first floor. Damian’s ear twitched and his nose crinkled as Gardin spotted him, making a b-line for Damian and Rhia. The doors opened and Damian stepped inside, turning on heel to face the closing doors. Gardin had caught up to them and was reaching out his arm in an effort to stop the elevator doors from shutting him out. Damian took one step forward, placing himself slightly in front of Rhia, ready to defend from the volatile words that were sure to spew from Gardin. Damian’s spine rippled with pain as another wave of spikes tore through his senses, causing his lips to twitch into a growl.

Rhia took a step forward, pulling up even with Damian, as Gardin opened his mouth to say something no doubt, that would be very... uncouth. She smiled sweetly, and hit the button to close the doors as she said, "Thank you for taking me to the station and making me get hurt. I'll be sure to call your supervisor later. Have a great night Officer Gardin." she murmured softly, her eyes flashing, as he pulled back with surprise written across his features, quickly being replaced by anger. But the doors shut before he could say anything. But she could hear his cursing even through the doors, until the elevator started moving. As soon as they moved, she sighed softly, her shoulders slumping. Then she looked around, and fresh fear gripped her. She was in an elevator... Lord help her. She leaned against the wall, her forehead resting against the cool metal, as a wave of nausea hit her, along with more cramps. She breathed slowly through them. When they were over, she turned slightly, and shot a tentative smile at Damian. "I promise I'm not actually going to press charges or anything... I just... It was the first thing I thought of to keep him from stepping through the doors... oh!" she gasped softly as the elevator gave a slight jerk, before continuing on it's way down. She shuddered with fear. When she'd been eight, she'd had an elevator break, with her inside of it, and plummet a few stories, before the emergency breaks had finally caught it, only barely saving her life. She pressed her forehead into the metal even harder. "I really... hate elevators... evil things..." she murmured to herself, as a soft laugh escaped her, when she realized how very ridiculous she must have sounded.

.:Damian Connell:.Damian was glad to have her at his side, her verbal attack allowing them to escape and he couldn’t help but chuckle at Gardin’s thwarted curses. He turned to her with a soft smile and cringed as another wave of needles . . . no it wasn’t needles it was . . . fear, but it was not his own. Damian had only to look at Rhia a second longer to realize that a new wave of terror had come over her. Damian did a quick sweep of the elevator. They were alone. He turned back to Rhia, her head against the metal wall of the descending box, confusion clouded his eyes until the elevator jerked and she let out a small frightened squeak. Rhia confirmed his suspicion in action and word. It was the elevator that she was afraid of. Damian looked up at the display, they were going past the second floor, and they would be able to get out soon. He placed one hand on her shoulder, a single spark of lightning traveled through his arm as he did. “We’ll be out soon, just one more floor.” he cooed as the elevator lightly bounced to a stop and pinged to announce they had made it alive. Damian took a step back, his twitched with concern and his eyes searched Rhia’s to know if she was ok. He backed out of the elevator, keeping an eye on her, feeling her fear dissipate. Damian sighed as they fully entered the lobby. Another rumble of thunder echoed through his body as he heard pounding foot falls cascading down the stairwell. ‘Slow b*****d’s rounding the third floor. But we still have to hail a cab.’ Damian flinched as the echo passed. They needed to get out of here fast, not only was his control starting to wane, but Gardin wasn’t that slow. Damian turned to Rhia, making sure she was ok, before they started the next leg of their escape.
