havishanta PLAY MELLOPHONE/FRENCH HORN! XD Lol, jaykay, I'm biased. ; D No, a lot of people have been giving good suggestions. If your considering switching, ask what your band director needs. That's how I got to playing French Horn and I ended up loving it. : ) It's always nice for a bit of change. Saxophone is usually the easiest instrument to play (I'm not trying to degrade saxophones or anything, but generally it's easier to make a sound on a saxophone.) Though you'd be written in a different key than clarinet. What is it? Saxophones are in G and clarinets are in...Bb? Forgive me, I'm not a clarinet player. : ) I've heard a lot of good things about jazz band I, myself, have completed my first semester of marching band and fell in LOVE with it. I think bottom line is you just have to put yourself out there. Try new things. If you don't like it, then that's fine, and at least you've learned something. But if you do like it, you'll be grateful you took that chance. You have nothing to lose but sooo much to gain. "There's not a chance unless you take one." : ) So please consider everything, and remember, the decision is all yours. : ) Haha, YESSS!!!! french horn the the best instrument ever! <3

alicelovesjasper4ever xXMarching PandaXx If you want to be jazz band, I say go ahead and play saxophone. I play clarinet, and I've fooled around with sax, and it's pretty easy to play, for the most part. For marching band, there are pros and cons for marching clarinet. Pros, you've been playing clarinet for a while, so you're used to it, and it's the easiest instrument to march. However, you can hear saxophones a lot more, so if you want to be louder, you should switch to sax. errr, so hard to choose one! im still not sure if i wanna join marching band tho. is it as hard as some pl put it to be or not? ok the problem with joining marching band is that you dont really have time 4 anything else. my brother started this year he was working his butt off during football season. he had to go to all the football games, all the concerts and performances, 3 hour practices after school every other night and almost every day of the summer he was at band camp. he says its a ton of fun but u really have to put in a lot of hard work and commitment. my neighbor is in marching band too but he also does cross country so he's always bone tired. he says he's thinking about quitting band so he might have some time to actually do his homework and get a good nights sleep. personally, i want to join the high school soccer team so i will probably join jazz band. so if theres any other sport or extracirrcular type thing u want to do jazz band would be ur best bet. ps marching band isnt as hard as it looks. even if u dont memorize the music like ur supposed to, u can pretend to play like i do when we have to memorize scales 3nodding

ok, i asked my director about jazz band and the saxophone. she said that the soprano's or bari's are used for the high school and tenor is filled up. alto already has too many, but she suggested the keyborad part because she knows i play *sighs* so all of this comes back to the keyboard. she also said i can stick with clarinet in jazz band and we usually have two keyboard players so we only have to woory about one hand. the only reason why im scared to try out is because i get my chord and melody mixed up. you're supposed to play chord with the left hand and melody with right. i usually don't play the chord, but i use my left and right hand for the melody. i don't know if i'll make it, but i may try out anyway.

Sorry. xd But, I can say that marching band is definitely worth all the hard work. It changes you for the better, you learn to manage your time, you get in shape, you make amazing friends...I love it. I wouldn't choose anything over it, no matter how hard we work. There were some days where I didn't go home because I had pit orchestra and marching band right after it. It sucked, it was exhausting, but I still loved it.
And if you think marching band is easy, you're doing it wrong. Even our best marchers put their full energy into marching. And pretending to play will only bring the rest of the band down. If the director's smart, they'll hold playing tests, and they'll find out that you don't know your music. So, please, PLEASE- if you join marching band, don't pretend to play. It's probably one of the the worst things you could do.
As for keyboard stuff, give it time. I'm trying to teach it to myself, but I suck at playing two different rhythms on two different hands. xd My brain doesn't separate like that...good luck, though. You can always try sax out some other time. :]

yeah, i taught myself to play from translating the clarinet notes from my books and sheet music. im pretty good, but im just like u. i get my chord and melody mixed up and have a hard time playing the music right. i also only play with one hand, so i try to play the melody with my left hand or sometimes play the melody with both my hands and completly forget the rest. yeah, i guess i'll start doing some of these things that you guys post on here. i thank you and all who has posted on here. alicelovesjasper4ever toco clarinet alicelovesjasper4ever toco clarinet RainbowsBunny If you really want to learn a new instrument trumpet and clarient are in the same key so it'd be easy for you to read the music. you...fail so hard...you have no idea...but you do...the key an instrument is in has no effect on how you read the music...a written A is still a written A in every key ??? if ur not going to help meh not be confused, then why u questioning her? i never said i wanted to help you smile and i wasn't questioning her. i was telling her straight out that she was wrong. hey, that's mean. and maybe she isn't wrong. She is. For example. Piano and trombone are in the same key. So does that mean that if I play piano, then trombone will automatically be the easiest instrument to learn? Also, that's like saying. "I can play french horn, but I can't switch to flute, I wouldn't be able to read the music." Music is written the same for every instrument. Although, switching to a bass clef instrument is a different story. razz Go with sax. In my opinion, it'll be easier to go from woodwind to woodwind, rather than woodwind to brass. I've heard going from clarinet to sax isn't too hard, and I know people who have done it. Plus, it gets to play the fun parts in jazz band. razz

Anyway, I pretty much agree with what Saint Crazy S Requiem said. I'm a sophomore in high school and I play the clarinet and the sax, among other things. You probably shouldn't switch for marching band, but feel free to play around a little bit. I play the tenor sax in jazz band. I think that'll probably be the easier instrument to switch to, simply because the instruments are in the same key( stare ) and the fingerings for the sax are very similar to the 'upper range' (First upper, or second middle, if you will.) of the clarinet.
Otherwise, the alto sax wouldn't be so bad, or the flute as long as you can handle the change in embouchure. Trumpet? ... I've tried and failed, but it could just be me. Everyone is different, after all. I know quite a few people who are remarkable woodwind players, and then do very well on brass instruments, and vice versa.
All in all, try marching band and jazz band. I perform in both, and I love it. Just don't give up.

ok, i think i got it. i talked to my band director and she told me about the saxophones. because they are so exspensive, she lets the high school use soprano and the jazz band (high school) is already using the bari and tenor saxophones. and alto.... we actually have too many i think. so i think ill do jazz band until i graduate and so on into collage. marching band, ill do one year of and if i like it, ill stay with it. if not, ill quit. in 7th grade, they have keyborad tryouts so i may do that only because we may have two so each player can realy on one hand instead of two. that's very good for me. i can't play with two hands XD. when i get in high school for jazz band, ill talk to my band director about the bari saxophone. we had our christmas concer last night and the high school jazz band played. they were amazing and i got to hear what the bari sax sounded like. i LOVED it. better than the alto. (no offense alto players) u guys can still post and give hints and advice, but this is my plan based on what u guys said to do. i thank all of u for the help. LOVE U ALL! XDD

Don't do it. It's jazz/concert band and the concert part means you get no trips and you don't get to do anything. Unless you really really really love the sax!
