Yeah I know here one. Don't buy a lot of stuff in one day when you don't have a hotel or a car.

I have some rather specific advice, for the Thursday prereg line:

1) have a large, opaque umbrella for deflecting the evil rays of the sun. Also, I think it actually rained rather hard at one point.

2) bring a little collapsible/foldable/portable stool/chair to sit on

An amusing factoid about me: I only spent about 55 bux at Otakon '05!! Excluding the cost of gas, that is.

The best advice for the Thursday prereg line? Don't sit around all day waiting for it to open. People were there at 9 in the morning when it didn't open until... what was it, 3? We went down at about 7 and waited a grand total of one hour; some of our friends got there a lot later and didn't have to wait at all.

I have a question. (I'm not sure if this is the right spot)

So last year I had a couple of "unfortunate" happenings, involving sexual harassment while in the convention center...

A couple of times random people would grab my butt (this happened like 3 different times), and a very creepy man kept following me and my party around.

Needless to say this made me very uncomfortable, not to mention its illegal ESPECIALLY because I'm a minor.

So if this happens again what should I do? Last time I only told my older sister and she made me walk in front of her the whole time...is there a better solution though? I'm not sure its really preventable though sweatdrop

If someone is being creepy, notify con safety. Particularly if you are a minor. Or if you are with your parent, let them know, cos they will be much more harsh than the the con staff.

LADIES - bring feminine hygiene products with you. Even if you are not due, bring a few just in case. Being in a high stress environment can trigger your cycle. It can also be triggered by being in a closely packed environment with other women who ARE on their cycle. Better to be safe than sorry.

Don't piss off the hotel staff. Please. It makes us look bad and makes them less willing to be hospitable.

I swear, this happens every.single.year, and I've been going since 1999. ESPECIALLY at the dance. So drink WATER, and eat properly.

On a personal note- don't buy Pocky at the con if you can help it. I get so annoyed when I see kids buying overpriced boxes when you can get them for a buck at your local asian food market. Same for Ramune.

Don't run around like a monkey. You will knock into someone, and if it's me, you will not get up again. I don't care how old/young you are.

Nuthin' more disgusting than the smell of menstrual blood. Thank you. heart
I just want to restate the common courtesy tips. These especially go for people who aren't at the con, just random folks you meet on the street when you go to get food. Smile kindly, explain why you and your friends are wandering around dressed like Japanese cartoon characters, let them take your picture, etc. Being nice to the general populace makes the city more friendly towards otaku and reflects well on us. Also makes for some potential converts.

I forgot one more thing: If you are cosplaying, BRING AN EMERGENCY SEWING KIT. And a glue gun if you used one. Baltimore is hot, humid, and you'll be in a crowded area getting jostled by people. Costume mishaps can and do happen.

I need a tip. I've heard varying accounts of the food situation up in Baltimore. Can anyone tell me about the fast food places, when they close, are there many around the BBC, etc.? I'd really appreciate it, thanks.

There's a Burger King right across the street from the BCC, but they have the longest lines, and have a tendency to run out of food. Two blocks over is the Inner Harbor, with a shopping mall and a food court that has all the usual mall food court sundries. This site has some excellent detailed information.

~When cosplaying use light materials. If you use heavy materials you will need to drink a ton of water and carry a fan to keep you cool.
~Do not start fights. You will be kicked out for this.
~If you're going with family or a group a good meeting place is the registration area in the lobby.
~Bring a sewing kit.
~If you want to go to a restaurant the inner harbor is not far away. The restaurants are in shopping centers. They have excellent fries.
~Keep the perfume use to a minimum.
~If you want to stand in the pre-reg line bring water, food and games/books/cd player/mp3 player. Do not sit on the slanting wall by the catwalk. You will be yelled at by police. Bring an umbrella for shade. Pre-reg doesn't start until about 5:00 pm. For a good spot in line get there early.
~Cosplayers at the end of the day when you take your costume off spray it with Febreeze. Steam is good for it too.

Someone mentioned knowing the con schedule in advance. It reminded me of this- many people plan their daily activies around the program booklet, which is a good idea but make sure if you don't have one or you lost yours that you keep an errata sheet with you. (This is the piece of paper that details last minute changes that occurred after the booklets went to print.) They can save you a lot of frustration. It should be included with your baggy, but double check just in case.

There are tables set up specifically for information. In some cases the staffer you manage to snag may be new, or from a department totally unrelated to what you're asking about. The BEST place to get information is at the info table by Con Ops, up on the 300 level. It should be right behind registration.

If you see signs that say "don't use this escalator" or "this elevator is for handicap use only" obey them.

If you're about to get in line for the dealers room STOP and make sure you have all the money, pieces of your costume, party members and anything else you may need while in there. Especially if there is a long line.

Bring a bag of items you can use to repair your costume. Trying to locate duct tape in the middle of the con is a pain in the a**.

Bring a notepad into the Artist's Alley so you can note the name and location of an artist you may want to buy from later. Even if they have cards, because cards are loose paper and get lost more easily than a notebook.

Even if it's solitair, bring something to occupy yourself in line. Handhelds are a good idea and there are usually other people with the same thing. It's also a good way to make friends.

You can spend $20 at the grocery store and get enough food for yourself for the weekend, instead of spending that much in one meal around the city.

Don't leave trash on the ground, it makes line uncomfortable for the people behind you. And it's gross.

If you restrict yourself to one suitcase for the weekend you can keep everything together and run less of a risk of leaving something behind. The same goes for keeping your room neat.

Don't take pictures of people in the middle of the halls! It's not just annoying because it blocks up traffic, but you're twice as likely to get a poor shot because you're rushing or have someone walk in front of the picture.

Learn the layout of the BCC the first day or go with someone who already knows their way around. You'll spend less time trying to figure out where you're going.

Be nice to the staff, you have no idea how much it can improve someone's day when another person is nice to them. If you're nice to them they will more than likely be nice to you.

Try to learn the locations of the staff tables in each area. Artist's Alley and Art Show should be easy to spot, the Dealer's Room staff table will be by the Industry room, near the Ota-Stuff table. (I'll be there!) The main info table, as previously mentioned, will be by Reg on the 300 level. There is always a main area where the staff work within a room. They can give you the most information on whatever it is you want to find or know.

Bring an umbrella! Someone already mentioned this but I can't stress it enough. It blocks light and rain. Very useful.

If you split up from your group during the day have a time and place to meet so you can go back to your room at night. Do not deviate from it.
