Harper
Journaling really isn't my thing... But aunt Noharu suggested I try it. I'm willing to try her ideas. She's pretty smart, unlike Noyama. What were those crazys thinking sticking me here? She can't even read!

Anyway, Karoko's been acting really weird lately. Noharu told me it was something to do with the race she is. Eden or something... With her out of comission, things have been so boring. Who am I suppose to talk with? Noharu's not very social. She does like me more than anyone, though, next to Karoko. She says if Karoko has to 'hang' with someone she's glad it's me.

Pukio brought her D-Corp kid. A unicorn. He's so disgustingly cute. I guess he's not as bad as I convinced myself he would be. He doesn't like Akilah, so I guess we at least have something in common.

My eyesight has been getting better and better. I can put a book half way across the room and still read it. If I try hard enough I can focus on stuff... Almost like the zoom of a camera.

I'm trying to teach Noyama to read and write. THAT should be interesting... Noharu says I can do it, though. Because I already write like I'm an adult, she said. And talk and act like it, too. She says I'm a genius like Karoko!

The fox-eared teenager held her work up and smiled brightly, tail swaying happily behind her. It wasn't the best, but it was a start, right? Harper just had to be happy with her now!

One day, she'd read in a book that family was nesscary to to teach one things as they grew older. On that same day, she'd looked up the definition of 'family, and the results were as follows:

any group of persons closely related by blood, as parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins

This had raised a few eyebrows, namely her own two. Although above average intelligence in things like reading, writing, and even math, her understanding of human (or demon or whatever) nature still needed some work.

Same with her social skills, but that was another matter.

She'd approached her aunt, Noharu, about it. To her surprise, she'd been redirected to Noyama. Even more surprising was that the airhead head managed to give her a semi-decent answer.

"Family does help you learn things, Harper," she'd said as she folded some clothes on top of Karoko's bed. "But blood isn't everything. Blood shouldn't make you like or not like someone."

It wasn't the best choice of words, no, but like she'd said, the answer was semi- decent. Enough to get her thinking about her so-called family.

So, if blood didn't determine anything, did that mean she could decide who was and wasn't her family within the household? An overly-complex thought process on the matter went step-by-step through her mind as she took out the trash.

Karoko? Harper liked Karoko. So, Karoko was her cousin. Noharu was definately accepted as an aunt. Noyama... Well, she was okay, but more like a (slightly stupid) sister than any sort of mother.

Then there was that one person in the house she'd never willingly acknowledge as that 'f' word---

"WHERE THE HELL IS CRICKET?!"

Harper cringed. Speaking of...

"I don't know," Noharu answered from her chair, otherwise ignoring the fuming teenager in the rooms doorway.

Cricket was a cat...fox thing. A Cait, was the offical name, if Harper remembered right. She was actually pretty cute, all black except for some pink swirls. Pretty eyes, too.

On the other hand, she was much like Kilah, tempermantal and trouble-making. She continously tried to escape the household so she could go maul some poor creature outside, despite the fact it was supposedly against their nature to do so. For that reason, they had to pay very close attention whenever they opened doors or windows.

Something Harper had just failed to do, and paled upon the realization.

"She better not have gotten out, because I'll kill who's fault it was!" Kilah threatened, and promptly stormed off. Once the door to her room slammed shut, the hawk girl edged toward her aunt.

"You don't think she'd actually kill someone for that...?"

"Probably," Noharu shrugged. "Who in this house is forceful enough to stop her? Except me, of course, and I'm busy."

"But I left the door open while I was taking out the garbage," Harper squeaked. "She probably got out then." There was a mixture of frustration and worry when her aunt burst out laughing.

While she was good at advice, the woman wasn't much for helping anyone but Karoko, and even that type of assistance was limited. She seemed to take a lot of entertainment from potential deaths. "Guess that means you're screwed, doesn't it? I suggest you run off and find the little rat before Kilah figures out it was you..."

With a gulp, Harper tip-toed outside. Family was suppose to teach you things. That was good. Because a lot of her family had wings, and not the useless ones like Kilah's.

It had taken a lot of practice, but with the combined efforts of Karoko and her sister, Onoway, they'd taught her the basics of flying. Everything from there she'd learned herself. The diving, turning, spinning. Once she got her feet off the ground (no pun intended), it felt like it was something she was born today.

Which gave her more of a reason to reject the idea of having some giant beast hauling around behind her. What did she need something like that for if she could fly herself?

The girl took to the air and glided over the forest behind the house. Luckily, all the leaves had fallen off the trees. Her eyes squinted and she stared at the ground below her. There was a surprisingly large quanity of pretty flowers sprouting given the season...

"Aha!" she called out, spotting the black and pink blotch dashing along. Leaning forward, she soared down, down, down, and just before hitting the ground, snatched the creature into her arms and flew back up.

No dying today!

Soon enough, she was home, and was more than happy to let the struggling Cait drop to the ground so she could dash back to her 'owner'. A sigh of relief she'd been holding in was released as she plopped down next to her aunt, who peered at her with mild surprised.

"I'm amazed you found her at all, but that was pretty quick," she admitted. Harper's shoulders went up and fell back down.

"It was pretty easy from way up in the air. Hey, did you know there's still flowers sprouting on the ground at this time of year?"

Noharu shook her head. "I'm not that concerned with plant life. Although... That's pretty impressive you can see something like a blooming flower from the sky. That's quite the eyesight you have."

Harper started. She hadn't thought about that... Why hadn't she thought about that? "I guess it is," she agreed.

But, hopefully, she wouldn't have to use it for that again.

The saying was that you wouldn't know what you had until it was gone. Harper wasn't sure she agreed completely; many things she had lost were things she had not batted an eye about lacking. Still, do be greatful for what you have, is the lesson she had learned. As it can get worse, and get worse very quickly.

'Quickly' can sometimes be a matter of weeks. A matter of days. For Harper, it was a matter of hours. Even now she hardly knew what had happened. She'd been in a daze through most of the chaos. Akilah was dead, she'd heard someone say. Noharu? Noharu had done it? It wasn't something she could will herself to accept, yet it was something she, one who prided herself in logic, couldn't reasonablely deny when she thought about it.

Which literally resulted in the unthinkable. That wasn't to say Harper stopped thinking. Impossible. Rather, she stopped musing, pondering, trying to figure things out. The young girl worked herself into exhaustion simply so her mind would have something constantly to think about. She made sure to never be alone or never be somewhere quiet enough to allow her to think long.

It wasn't as big an issue as one would think. Not in this place. This... Harper felt her vocabulary had lessened. A lot. That, or there was just no word for this place. Noyama had no relatives she could go to. She had no relatives at all. Her last hope had been Akilah and Lilly. Harper herself hadn't requested to live with them, but she knew someone had, and she knew they'd rejected (and probably laughed over) it. It didn't make sense. Hadn't she been told Akilah was dead? Yet, Noharu was no where to be found, and Noyama vanished in the pace of two heart beats. Hell, her entire family did.

Except for Onoway. Her unusual, butterfly-winged cousin had come here as well. An orphanage. An orphanage. Harper knew what they were before she'd become a member of one, from stories. Never had she considered they were real. Not in Gaia. Not where people randomly adopted numbers of babies.

They were real. They were in Gaia.

"Harper! Will you give it a rest and come eat? You're not Cinderella!"

"I will!" the girl barked back. On her feet, she wiped her forehead and stared down at the kitchen floor. Spotless! You could see your reflection! She'd have to find something else to do tomorrow... For now, she hurried to the table and took her usual seat beside Onoway, nodding a silent 'hello'. The action was mirrored. The meal was quiet.

--Quiet from Harper's point, that is. Onoway, being mute and all, never had much to contribute. There was a set of loud-mouthed twins with feline features that never failed to cause a yelling match during any time they were gathered together. This tended to be dinner.

Today, Harper would have something to contribute. She drew in a deep breath and stood up, clapping her hands. "Excuse me," she called out. The majority of the children and young teenagers continued whatever they were doing, but the current adult present faced her intentily.

"I... I'd like to get my dragon back. Because I... I want to return to D-Corp."

Suddenly, everyone was quiet.
