Jessie spun round to face the voice, his hand twitching visibly towards his weapon.

However, his reaction was unnecessary - it was just Coline. In the few days he'd been personally supervising her training, she had shown him again and again just what she was, or would be, capable of. She had a haunted look in her eyes which he respected.

Therefore, while he was not used to being the one snuck upon upon as opposed to the one doing the sneaking, he recomposed himself and nodded towards her - sternly, but respectfully.

"Certainly. Permission granted.

...Is there anything you need before you begin to practise?"

Her eyes averted from the Captain's as she pondered. Phase four of basic training focused on... disarming. "A..." she muttered, sporting a pained expression. "Ad... vice." she finally said. Coline assumed her firm stance again, facing her superior with the most determined face she could muster. So much that she barely felt the heat rise up her cheeks. "I haven't the slightest clue where to start, sir!"

"Well..." he began "Disarming, after parrying, is probably the most vital skill you'll ever learn. It's also one of the more complex and risky movements - or rather, series of movements, as something different is required for every situation, and every weapon. You'll need something more than a dummy to practise on... so come over here, with me."

He gestured to the young woman to follow him away from the dummy and towards the center of the sand ring, where there was more room. She seemed so nervous, so awkward... he gave her a rare half-smile, which he hoped in an offhand way was encouraging.

Coline's eyes widened, her grip on the trident tightening as her cheeks gathered more heat. That... was a smile, wasn't it? This was the first time she had seen the Captain smile ever since her training started. Though to be honest, she didn't know whether to feel relieved or wary of the gesture.

But he was her Captain. He must have the best of intentions.

Regaining her composure, Coline followed suit into the center of the ring, gripping her trident with both her hands in front of her chest. She remained silent, casually glancing at her superior as she awaited further instructions.

Bapp raised an eyebrow at his instructor before he moved on to the next student.

"Uhmm... Okay?" He shrugged, looking around for a more decent training partner than a lifeless bundle of straw.

"There's not really anything lively enough to train countering on that's not busy at the moment..." He sighed, readjusting his top hat.

Bored, he continued with his fruitless training, kicking the dummy at the base so it fell towards him, before he hit it back up to standing position with either the back of his scythe, a kick, an elbow, or even throwing it over his shoulder before propping it back. Bapp did learn some martial arts before arriving here, but putting it to practical use was beyond him.

After glancing in distaste momentarily at the rising sun, the Captain turned back towards Coline, his single red eye appraising her, travelling over her in a sudden intense scrutiny.

"For a start, you'll need to drop that trident. There's no way anyone can effectively learn to disarm without starting from scratch."

He pulled from his waistband a dagger - not flashy or even particularly large. A standard-sized knife, as one may even use to gut fish or slice bread.

"Drop the trident. Ready yourself. I'm going to come at you and make a thrust towards your chest. You're going to perform one of two moves: either you grab my arm from the underside and force it upwards before applying a choke hold or kicking me, or you grab it from above and yank me towards you. If and when I fall to the ground, you may pin me down or simply wait for further instruction. Do you understand?"

((EDIT smile ) He turned towards the recruit whose name he doesn't know, suppressing a scowl. "I'll get to you after I have shown this girl the basics. Perhaps it would do you good to watch us, as eventually this shall be part of your training, too."

Now that was more like it. All doubts of impostors erased from her mind, she spun her trident around and pierced at the sandy floor, setting it steadily in place. Then she hopped a few paces back as she readied her stance, a sly smirk spread across her lips. There were no need for words. She was ready.

The Captain didn't smile. She needed no more reassurance.

Without warning - without pause - he took two lightning steps forward, closing in on her in a second, before thrusting the blade directly at her chest; more slowly than he normally would, but this was hardly noticeable.

(( I decided to add the actual skilled attack this would be, just to be completely accurate and in line with my own system... XD ))

(( Hey wait! Waitwaitwiat! I just remembered that ___I___ am supposed to roll! Homg! Rofl! Looks like we're all learning how to do things here, huh?!

Guh, I'm really out of sorts atm. I'm unfortunately having an argument over PMs with someone who seems desperate to run me down and prove himself right. Sigh. It's very tiring and disheartening.))

((LOL! Don't feel ashamed. I read the thing over just now and was just about to roll. That's just one step behind utter failure. 8D I think we could also make it work if I rolled though, it's just that you would be the one to react by either falling to the ground or stabbing me.

I hope I get this right... Tell me if I do anything wrong.))

He's fast...!

There wasn't even time to blink, let alone move. The Captain was aiming that blade at her chest. Was this it? Was she going to die here?

THUMP THUMP.

She could hear her heartbeat resounding through her ears. It was at that same moment that everything started to move in slow motion. She could see everything clearly; her Captain, blade in hand, inching slowly towards her chest. Her heart raced. What was going on? The next second Coline found herself grabbing her superior by the wrist, forcing him to the ground.

And then it ended.

She breathed heavily with widened eyes as she gripped at the Captain's wrist, tighter than she probably should. She was trembling. What... was that sensation?

The pressure around Jessie's wrist was almost excruciating - almost. But he didn't drop the weapon. Anyone else would have, but he didn't. A number of instinctual possibilites flashed through his mind. He could switch the blade to his other hand and ram it into her stomach. He could snap the arm holding his in place.

But of course, since the entire point of the exercise was for him to drop the weapon, it occured to him that he probably should.

Still, he didn't.

"You may let go now. That was very good... Coline."

Hearing her superior's voice was more than enough to snap Coline out of her daze. She released his wrist immediately and clambered off of him rather disgracefully, her legs still a bit shaky from everything that went on.

Being put into that situation was something entirely new to her. She had fought in the war, yes, but always at the assurance that she would be able to make use of her trident or her shield. To be left completely defenseless against an armed and experienced assaulter... it had been a long time since she'd felt this frightened.

But despite all that, it felt strangely satisfying. Although she wouldn't be singing the same tune had she been successfully stabbed in the chest.

"Th-Thank you, sir!" she stuttered, trying her best to compose herself. Glancing back at her fellow recruit for a moment, she turned back to the Captain. "Will... that be all?" She certainly hoped not. She always found her sessions with the Captain to be most fruitful.

"Certainly not. There are several more basic movements you must master..." he trailed off for a moment. It wasn't usual for him to be considering skimping on drills, but for some reason asking the girl to repeat the same moves again and again seemed rather unnecessary. "...Though it seems you're quite a natural against the dagger. In that case, I think it would be enough to talk you through the other movements."

He stepped in towards her, lowering his voice. Raising the dagger, he made a slow, upward stabbing motion by way of demonstration, with the blade pointed towards Coline's stomach. "If an opponent attempts to rend you from below, you must take hold of their wrist and twist. You could extend this movement into flipping the attacker, or you could hit them over the head while they remain in your grip. If they come at you from above -" he twirled the blade over in his hand, so that now the knife was pointing downwards towards her chest " - in a movement we call a Dracula Stab, you must parry his forearm with yours, grabbing his wrist with your opposite hand and then quickly trapping his arm by locking your parrying arm around his elbow. This position is almost inescapable if you do it correctly. Then it should be easy for you to wrest the weapon from his grip."

He stepped back from her again, expressionless. The knife returned to its home in his waistband. "Do you understand?"
