"Oh, look, Shammi! Letter time!" Erishi picked up the letter on the floor and gave a dance. Shammi, giving Erishi a wary eye, carefully flicked out her tongue. It was getting bigger and bigger! And she was learning neat things with it!

Erishi frowned at the letter. "Shammi's tongue isn't sticky! She licks me, and I don't stick!" The crazy purple haired woman said, smacking the paper. "And Shammi's tongue is not long!"

Eying her blocks, Shammi flicked out her tongue and tried to drag it over. But once she grabbed it, she couldn't get it off! "Eee! Eee!" She squealed, holding the block and trying to get her tongue off of it.

"What, Shammi? Erishi is arguing with the le-" Erishi carefully lowered the paper before tucking it in her pocket. "Erishi is eating crow now. Come, Shammi!" She scooped the whimpering chameleon girl up and disconnected the block. Shammi gnawed on the block and eyed Erishi warily. Things did not bode well for her.

After gathering a few blocks and some of Shammi's favorite foods, Erishi dragged the girl outside. "Now, Shammi," she began in a somewhat false formal voice. "As your mommy, it is up to me to tell you that just because you are different, that doesn't mean anything. Erishi is different from lots of people. But she is happy." Setting Shammi down, she moved to set up the blocks. "At least Shammi is at a good place, here. Here, it's okay to mess up and be different. Not where Erishi was from. They were very mean, and since Erishi was different, they did mean things to her."

Finishing her work with the blocks, the 'mother' sat in front of her daughter. "Everyone that cared about me when I was little went away. I used to have a grandpa, but bad things happened. After that, no one loved me no more." Tilting her head, she smiled at the little girl. "It's good you and me met up. You're different, and I'm different. But I love you, and I understand what it's like to be different. And since I know what it's like, I'll make sure that no one is mean to you like they were to me. I love you, my Shamilade." Her smile was tender and real, her eyes clear and focused. "And I won't let anyone make you hurt like I hurt."

"Brrrt?" Shammi blinked. That was out of character. Blinking a few times, the usual spacey look returned to Erishi's face. She slapped herself on the knees once and grinned mindlessly at Shammi. "But none of whatever I was just talking about is important now! It is time for target practice!" Scooting Shammi in front of the blocks, she pointed to the food. "Get the food, Shammi!"

"With your tongue, Shamilade!" Erishi said a moment later as Shammi started crawling towards the food. She shot Erishi a look somewhat like 'Well, you didn't specify how I should get the food!' "With your tongue, silly! We are doing target practice!"

Eying the food with a frown on her little face, Shammi aimed at the first food. She missed, shooing Erishi another look that said 'Okay. I don't wanna do this anymore.' Heaving a sigh, Shammi aimed for another food. She missed, but had to have the block pried off of her tongue.

"Closer! Good job!" Erishi encouraged, patting her. "Aim higher!"

Another attempt, this one too high. But the purple haired crazy still encouraged the chameleon girl, cheering wildly every time she got closer. Then, finally, Thwack! Shammi happily swallowed the Jell-o and beamed up at Erishi, who was going nuts. She scooped her baby up and danced in circles, laughing.

"Yeay, yeay Shammi!" She called, twirling around in circles. Stopping, slightly breathless, she smiled happily. "Maybe you would make a good sniper? We must keep practicing!"

"Bwah?"

A few hours later, the pair made their way down a street, both licking ice cream cones. "Now, we have more stuff to talk about." Erishi started, taking a big bite out of her ice cream. After she chewed the bite, she winced. "First off, when you get teefs, do not chew ice cream. It is painful. Also, with your tongue, there shall be rules. One, you shall not stick your tongue out at me. Two, you shall not stick your tongue out at other people."

Feeling contrary, Shammi stuck her tongue out at Erishi. "Eeee!" She wailed, hair sticking to her tongue. Erishi disconnected the hair and Shammi wiped her tongue, glaring slightly.

"See? Hair is not tasty! Imagine if you got Ike's fur in your mouth! That would not be good. So keep your tongue in your mouth! Unless you are showing off. Then show off in a direction that people are not in. Unless you really don't like them, and they are not covered in fur or feathers. Skin is okay. Feathers and fur comes off and is not tasty. Feathers scrape the whole way down your gullet."

Exactly how Erishi knew this, no one knew. Shammi didn't think she wanted to know.

"And if people are mean, you can be mean back. Or tell me, and I'll be mean. You are my special and beautiful girl, and I won't let you ever feel like you're not." Tickling her tummy, Erishi smiled as Shammi giggled.

Licking Erishi's ice cream cone, Shammi decided that Crazy Lady wasn't that bad after all.

Shammi started feeling odd. Her fingers tingled, her head ache and her eyes burned. Soon the sensation increased, to the point of making her trash about and scratch her scally skin

But that sudden feeling soon disapeared. But still she felt odd
Looking around she realised looked different. Her eyes where much larger now and she could move them a lot more than before. Her hands and feet had longer claws and when she rubbed her head, she felt longer horns sticking out of her hair. Also her tail was a lot more prehensile

Shammi big!

"Ah! Ah! Ewwi!"

Erishi groggily woke up, rubbing her eyes and stretching. She blinked and looked around for the source of the noise.

"Ewwi! Ewwi!" The little voice persisted, her calls added by smacks on wood.

"Shams?" Erishi asked, holding her blanket to her chest and shuffling over. Through her bleary vision (Those contacts weren't just for show, after all), she managed to get to the crib without killing herself. "What-"

"Ewwi!" Two little, though not as small as they had been, hands wrapped around hers. She smacked Erishi's hand into the crib rail several times. "Yook! Yook!"

"Eri needs to fix her eyes, Shammi." Erishi grumbled, scooping the heavier girl up and making her way to the bathroom. After the mis-matched contacts were in, she held Shammi at an arm's length and peered at her. Her horns were bigger, and she had claws, and her tounge was happily hanging from her mouth. "Tounge in, Shammi."

"Okiie!" Still grinning through her new teeth, she giggled and grabbed her hands together.

"Erishi's little angel." Erishi smiled and hugged her tighter Shammi hugged her back.

Happy Satan Day!

"Happy Satan Day, Everyone!" A very cheery voice called through the screen on the front door. Jeane scooted her chair back slightly and raised an eyebrow at the door. Very few people she knew would be calling that out in such a happy manner.

"Erishi. Been a while." She said, tone mild.

"Eri come in?"

"Yes."

"Okay!"

The usually bright haired woman entered, baby Shammi in her arms. Her previously purple hair had been twisted into two spiraling, vertical pigtails which were black. Upon closer inspection, they had been spray painted into place. Shammi's hair, however, was blissfully paint free.

"And what brings you here today, Erishi?" Erishi sat Shammi on the ground carefully before answering.

"Have you ever thought about today?" She rounded on Jeane, shaking a finger at her. "Mean ol' Jesus gets a birthday every year, but poor Satan has to wait every one hundred years! It's not fair!" She stuck her hands on her hips indignatly. "We should throw him a party. It would be the nice thing to do."

Silence from Jeane.

"I thought it was a good idea."

More silence.

"I brought the funnel cake of the innocent!"

"Erishi, what exactly is wrong with you?" Jeane asked, sighing. Erishi waved the funnel cake and beamed, while Shammi attempted to crawl up her leg to get to it. Finally, in desperation, Shammi flicked out her tounge and the entire funnel cake wound up in her face.

"Shammi, that was bad! That was Satan's funnel cake! Now what are we going to feed him when he comes to his birthday party?!"

Shammi tried to look ashamed, but somehow wound up looking more pleased as she licked powdered sugar from her face.

Recall

Darkness on the Mishaps front. Erishi sat in the living room part of her loft, carefully painting with ink. Shammi sat, perhaps two feet away, painting with poster paints. Every few moments one would giggle and splash the other with their art supplies.

Darkness. It was what Erishi was most comfortable in. No one could see her, no one could judge her. It was cool. Beautiful.

What it wasn't, however, was mobile. The slight flutter outside the window wasn't caused by the wind. "Shammi, move!" Erishi hissed, pushing the babe in front of her and throwing her past the first door she came to. Lock, crouch, and the elder was ready for battle.

The window shattered a few moments later, and the moving darkness swept into the room. His liquid black eyes blinked at her. No words were spoken between the two. The wind blowing through the broken window made his hair flutter.

"Ethos?" She asked, smiling. No emotion, nothing.

"Yes."

"Guess I missed the animal upgrade."

It was somewhat like the darkness attacking the light. This intruder was like darkness on the moon, his skin almost luminescent beneath his ebony hair and feathers. There was no emotion on his face. He was glaringly opposite to Erishi's face, which was grinning fit to kill. They circled each other around the living room, never letting their eyes leave the others.

"Name?" Erishi inquired.

"No reason."

"Ah."

She made the first strike, lunging at him in an almost feline way. Bird dodged the strike and swirled in the air, planting one taloned foot into her back. The talons easily broke through her skin and wrapped around a rip, snapping it free and through the skin. Erishi hissed and crouched on the ground. Bird flicked the rib off into a corner.

A stand still again. Erishi's pupils were nearly the size of pinheads, her teeth bared. Bird hovered in the air, watching her. There was no change in his eyes as he dove again. However, Erishi was ready for him. She grabbed the leg with her right hand and slammed him into the ground, pouncing on him. Her metallic hand easily fit around the base of his right wing and she crushed it. That was all she the damage she was able to do before he flipped her off.

Now that she had done some damage to her opponent she smiled again. "What's wrong, Birdie?" She asked, flexing her hands. There was the barest hint of a smile on his face.

The next strike came too fast for Erishi to react. His fist collided with her face; the bone in her nose bent and snapped, grinding the tissue inside. Erishi snarled and grasped his wrist. Bird grabbed her wrist with his free hand, wrenching it free and slamming her into the floor. The forced knocked the wind out of her lungs and she wasn't able to take a breath before Bird was on her chest, his weight resting on her chest and both hands pinning her own.

There was still a slight smile on his face as he moved her wrists on top of each other, managing to pin both wrists with just one hand. His now free hand moved to her neck. He traced one talon down her jaw line, watching her struggle to get air. "Shame." He said in the barest whisper, pressing on her windpipe. "I thought you would be better."

With a grunt, she tore one hand free and pulled the wrist on her neck, grasping it as hard as possible. Even deprived of oxygen, her flesh hand managed to crush the bone. He jerked back and she sat up, slamming her fist into his chest and toppling him over backwards. She sucked in a breath of air before continuing her assault.

"Oh, I'm pretty good." She managed, going again for his chest. He pulled to the left slightly, but her cybernetic hand still smashed several ribs. Bird retaliated by burying his good hand into her hair and smashing her face into the floor. She could feel her cheekbones start to give. He dragged her to her knees and rammed her head into the counter twice.

Even though her nerves had stopped sending pain signals to her brain long before, Erishi was stunned by the blow and fell to the floor. Bird tore off the sleeve from her pants and braced his broken arm. He knelt by her head and held her left arm in his right. He brought the cybernetic appendage to his eyes. Erishi's eyes started to flutter open.

"Naughty." Bird warned, prying his talons between the metal and her skin. She moaned slightly, tossing her head. Now that all five talons were between the metal and skin, Bird ripped the cybernetic appendage from her arm. That brought Erishi around quickly, screaming. Some cords tore all the way out from her shoulder, some hung from her bleeding wrist. Bird tossed the hand away as Erishi curled on the floor, holding the stump of her arm to her stomach.

Bird's talons clicked on the floor. Erishi curled into a tighter ball, weeping. He raised one leg into the air, talons clicking as he prepared to bring it down on her head. With a snarl, Erishi punched his foot. She was very satisfied when the bones snapped. The blow knocked Bird off balance and she pounced on him, slapping him with her stump of an arm and scratching with her good arm.

Her fight was too little, too late. Bird grabbed her head again and cracked it into the corner of the counter. Grunting, he smashed her head again and again, until the skin split and the bone cracked. Finally, when Erishi stopped moving, he dropped her to the floor. She lay in that awkward position, her eyes half open and glazing. Bird smiled again, crossing the room to wrench open the closet.

Shammi looked at Bird, mouth opened in a round o. "Ewwi! Ewwi!" She cried, horror in her eyes. Bird scooped her up with one taloned hand. "Ewwi!"

"Acka-" There was a gurgle on the ground, and one shaky hand grasping his ankle.

"Ewwi!" Shammi screamed, reaching down for the woman.

"Sha-" Bird's foot descended on her face and squeezed, cracking bone and tearing skin. He raised her up off the ground, gave her a shake, and sent her careening into the wall. Erishi panted and let out a weak cry.

Bird crossed over to her and knelt by her head again. He reached out with one hand and cupped her face. "Teit." He murmured, talons digging into her neck. He watched the blood flow down her skin, a smile in his eyes. The woman choked slightly. With visible effort, he retracted the claws and stood.

"Ewwi! Ewwi!" The scream reverberated through the room. But it was so much worse when it stopped.

Shammi was gone.

Helping hand

"Cripes, what was with all the racket?"

Julian glanced warily around the hall, expecting to see...well, he wasn't actually sure what. The noise had startled him, and like the horribly curious person he was he had gone to investigate. It had stopped, apparently...which made him even more uneasy. He could've sworn he'd heard screaming. Knocking tentatively at the door, he tried to remember who lived there. He'd met her once, awhile ago...Eri-something.

"Heya," he called, knocking a little louder. "Is everything alright in there?"

'There's someone at the door, Erishi. You should answer it."

"Mmm, no." Erishi curled tighter into a ball, ignoring the voice in her pounding head. "Hurts." She reached with her left hand for her head, but her blurring vision caught sight of the bleeding, corded stump. There wasn't a hand there anymore.

Her breathing spead up and she let out another cry, curling around her left wrist and holding her head with the right hand. "No-NO!"

If the hand was really gone, then that ment that everything else had happened. Shammi- "NO!"

Julian started as the cries started, and started pounding harder on the ********, what the hell's her...hey! HEY! Eri...Erishi! It's Julian! Look, open the door, alright?" he called, rattling the knob and cursing under his breath. "Is everything alright? Is Shammi okay?"

Looks like there was someone there after all. Erishi raised her head up from the ground and looked towards the door. She managed to army crawl to the door, keeping her left arm firmly against her stomach. Once there, she shakily sat back on her heels and reached to unlock the door.

"Noooo..." Erishi whined, tears filling up in her eyes. "Gone." That word was all she could take before dissolving into tears.

Julian stared in shock at Erishi's battered appearance, immediately kneeling down, checking her over, running over treatments and ways to help her in his mind. He glanced around the room sporadically, wondering if whoever had done this was still around.

"Tell me what happened," he said gently. "Who did this to you?"

Oh. Erishi kind of remembered him. The corner of her mouth twitched slightly and she hissed. "Stick man." What was his name? She couldn't quite remember.

"Man. Came in o'er there." She waved with her left arm, not looking at it, towards the window. "Pu' Shammi in clos't. Fight. I thin' a rib's o'er there. Bash, smash, fl'r, count'r. Hand's o'er there, I think. Hit me into count'r till I don't move. He open'd th' door." She gestured listlessly towards the open closet. "An'... An'... He took my Shammi. Kicked my head, left through there." She waved agian towards the window, her chin falling to rest on her chest.

Tears streaked down her face. "My... my... My... Sh-Sh-" Erishi started to shake, unable to even finish saying the name.

Nodding encouragingly, Julian glanced over Erishi's broken face before blanching as he did, in fact, see a lonely abandoned rib lying on the floor.

"That's right, Stick man, Julian," he said, pointing to her rib and still looking for the hand. "Lemme go get those, alright?"

Leaving her with reluctance to gather the body parts, he winced as he saw the counter. Gods, poor Erishi...

Returning after a minute with both rib and hand, he crouched down next to Erishi again, shushing her gently.

"It'll be alright, don't worry," he said, knowing full well he had no idea what the hell was going to happen. "Let's get you to a chair, okay? Up we go, c'mon."

Unsure if she would make it on her own, he picked her up as carefully as possible and set in down in a chair. Not knowing where else to begin, he went to find a hand towel and turned it into a tourniquet for Erishi's bleeding stump.

"Do you know why he took her?" he asked carefully as he worked.

Teeth chattering as she rocked back and forth in the chair, Erishi attempted to reply. The sounds that she forced out of her throat might have been chopped up sylables, or just noises from a defeated animal. Finally, she forced out- "Man. From where I was B'fore. I ran. Long ago. But he came."

"I don't know, I don't know, I don't knoooowww-!" Her voice rose into a howl again, wrapping her whole arm around her torso as tightly as possible. She held her breath in an attempt to control her sobs and shook with the effort, squeezing her eyes shut. Shammi was gone. Gone, gone, gone.

"Hey, hey, easy now," Julian said, trying to keep her still before she made any damage worse. He knew next to nothing about Erishi, but refused to press her any further. "Alright...okay. Do..d'you have something to sew with?"

He looked around aimlessly, hoping for needle and thread to jump out at him. No such luck.

"Okay," he said to her, wondering if she was even listening to him now, "We really need to get you fixed up. Do you want to stay here? We can go to my room. I have stuff there that'll help you."

He mentally listed his supplies in the room....barely efficient, but they'd work. He didn't want to leave her alone to go get them, though...

"No pointy stuff." She shook her head vigrously, splattering blood from the wounds on her face. Frowning, she leaned her head down and watched blood drip down her nose. "Mmmm." She whined, eyes crossing.

Abruptly she stood up, swaying on her feet. "Erishi go." She panted, looking at Julian. "But... If man come too, I'm sorry." She didn't know how Teit had managed to track her in the first place. But if he had managed to hurt her this bad, she couldn't immagine what he would do to Julian. Literally. Her head was fogging up pretty bad. "If man come, you run, okay?"

"Alright, nothing pointy," Julian agreed, wondering how the hell he was supposed to do sutures. "And...I will. But if I do, you're gonna come with me, whether you like it or not."

Taking hold of her again and guiding her carefully towards his and Crow's room, he was immensely grateful no one else was there. Pointing awkwardly to the couch, he started rummaging around for his things.

"Is there anyone you want me to call? Friends, family?" he asked. "If you...want to tell them?"

Oh, Couch. One had never look quite as nice as it did then. She tried to sit in a normal manner, but slipped and fell onto one side. "Erishi is bleeding on the nice pretty couch." She said almost to herself, looking at the couch with crossing eyes.

"Nobody." Erishi pulled her knees up to her chest and draped one arm around them, trying to hide her face in her knees. "Don't got nobody who cares no more. So don't worry. 'Sokay if I die."

"Ah, s**t."

Running to get a towel, he mopped up as much blood from Erishi's wounds as he could with it and pulled his obsessively kept first aid kit close. There were the normal supplies, as well as things he'd had the paranoid foresight to add, various syringes and painkilles included. Switching over to gauze and bandaging the more minor of the injuries, he sighed and got the suture kit out.

"Erishi, let me stitch some of your cuts, alright? I care if you die. So'll Crow. Everyone here'll care if you die," he said. "I don't know what I can do about your rib or your hand, though."

"Sorry." Her tone was somewhat dry. "Erishi is trouble. Some. Bleeds everywhere. Stupid."

"'Sokay. Every. Thing else hurts so. I won't feel pokies." She would have nodded, but had decided that nodding was bad. It made her nose go crunch. "Ribby, goes away. Boom. When head fixed. After sleep. Fix hand. Erishi cut up arm. Put hand back. 'Slong as connection only ripped in shoulder. Higher up an' I'll hafta route it differ'nt." She wasn't speaking so much to Julian as she was to herself now, blinking slowly and staring at the ground. "It'll be okay. Done it once. Do it again."

Julian cleaned the cuts as best he could and stitched them up one by one. He bandaged her head, using up most of the gauze.

"You're not trouble. No trouble at all," he said as he worked. "There. That's the best I can do with those...let's look at the arm."

Examining it closely, he glanced up at her in interest.

"You put the prosthetic in yourself?" he asked, trying to keep her talking. Talking meant consciousness, which in her state was pretty much a good thing. "That's really impressive."

"Mmhm. No one else was there. Old hand broke. Got shot. 'Fected. So I chopped it off. Made bandage. Made new hand. Cut arm to shoulder. Put in wires. Spliced to chip in head. So brain makes new fingers work like old fingers worked." Words weren't forming very easily. It was hard to think. Her head hurt.

Reaching up her good hand she pressed on the gauze. "Why... does it hurt? Not 'aposed to, no. Ow." Even though she knew she shouldn't she kept prodding her head. "Nnnn. I think... He broke somethin'... Innere. Chippy chip."

Replacing the hand towel with a real tourniquet, Julian listened intently as Erishi spoke.

"That's really-" he began, but cut himself off as she poked herself. "Hey, hey...don't. Chip, huh? I don't think I can help with that,"

Sitting back on his heels, he wondered what else he could do for her. He glanced at the coffee table where her hand and rib sat on a paper towel, ghoulish additions to the usual array of junk.

"Why don't...why don't you just lay down and rest, alright?" he said, grabbing pillows and piling them onto the couch. "You can stay here, if you like. Then we'll finish getting you fixed, while you rest up."

"S'okay. Chip might be bad. Never know. Not with them. Made me not feel hurts. But sometimes do bad stuff." She hoped that was the one that broke, in any case. Maybe it'd turn back on later. That'd be nice.

"Sleepy." Her head fell to rest on her chest again. "Can't go back yet. Not just yet. Cuz my Sh- Cuz no one's there. And I gets ascared when I's alone. Bad stuffs allways happens. I won't snore, okay? I'll be good. No more pokey." She curled back into a ball and looked at Julian with large eyes.

"Alright," Julian said, the only reply he could think of. What on earth would she have chips in her head for? His concern for Erishi tripled as he listened to her, and he went to rummage for extra blankets.

"You can stay as long as you want," he said, setting the blankets down on the couch and offer her one cautiously. "And that's good. No more pokey, don't want to make those cuts worse. I'll keep fixing them, though, if they do get worse. Don't worry."

"Blankie." She stretched out her hand and took it, snuggling under it. "Thanks, Julian." That was his name. Right. "Don't worry. Bad Erishi's gone. That's why I left that place. I didn't wanna bad no more. Won't hurt you, or anyone. Not no more." The man who stole Shammi excluded, of course.

She could feel sleep calling to her, but she had a feeling that she was forgetting something. Something she allways did before bed time. Oh, well. It couldn't be too important. Not nearly important enough to move from the nice comfy couch and pillow.

" 'Sbeen a lon' time since anyone's been nice to me. Thanks." She could manage a nod now, since there would be no blood flying anywhere. "Thanks, thanks."

"You're welcome," Julian said, "You're welcome."

Cleaning up and putting things away, he glanced at the hand and rib. Unsure what to do with the hand, he gingerly picked up the rib and started putting it on ice in Lenore's lunchbox, putting it hesitantly into the refridgerator. Hell if that wasn't one of the strangest things he'd ever done...

" 'Night, Erishi," he said, sitting in the armchair beside her, unsure what else to do.

" 'Night." Erishi hoped that she did not dream.

Return

"263 has returned." A middle age woman reported, tugging one hand through her hair. An older man, sitting behind a desk, looked up at her.

"Send it in." His tone was brisque. The woman bowed once and ushered Teit in.

"263."

"Mission sucessful. Unknown creature was placed in the science ward." Teit sad, eyes lidded.

"And 192?"

"Injured, perhaps dead."

"Perhaps?" The man frowned severley. "If it was alive, you should have brought it as well."

"192 is very active. It crushed my wing, my foot, and my arm. It would have been impossible to bring both at once without one escaping."

"It is greviously injured?"

"Head contusions, skull fractures, missing parts. It will not be getting up soon." Teit said with confidence.

"I am surprised you did not kill it, as it is a female." The man looked curious.

"It put up a good fight. I am curious." The bird man said, shrugging.

"If it repairs itself soon, you will go capture it." There was no room for argument in the man's tone. "And if you cannot capture it, you will kill it. Understood?"

"Understood."

"Good. Now, report to the ward. They want you there to examine the new creature." Teit bowed, liquid eyes never leaving the human's face. He turned around, limping slightly on his injured foot, and exited. The man rubbed his hands together with a smile.

"192 managed to restore some of it's cerebral functions with that creature. If it can work on the other Ethos, I might actually be able to make some profit out of this venture."

* * *

"Subject 263, approach the creature."

Teit warily circled the lizard child, who was doing her best to hiss and make itself unaproachable. His mouth scruched up to one side as he stepped closer, reaching out one hand towards it.

"NO!" The child screamed, lashing out with its claws. They tore rents in Teit's hand. Mouth still scrunched, he looked over his shoulder at the glass behind him.

"I don't think it likes me." Teit said, eyes half closed.

"Attempt to touch the creature again, 263."

"Tch." Teit looked at the child. It was still watching him with one eye, the other was looking around the room.

"No." It warned, bringing the second eye towards Teit. He took a step towards it. "No!" Another step. "NO NO NO!" It sarted to wildly thrash it's arms, screaming. "BAD BAD BAD!"

That made Teit smile. He was indeed bad. Moving swiftly, his hand raked out and grabbed the top of the lizard's head, lifting it off of the table. It screeched, flailing wildly, trying to reach Teit's arms with it's claws.

"NO! NO!" It screeched again. "EWWI! EWWI!"

Ewwi? It had said that while looking down on 192. Was that what it called 192? He attempted to communicate with the lizard. "Ewwi won't be coming for you." He said, watching it's face. "Ewwi is dead." A slight lie, but he wondered how it would react.

"NO! EWWI COME! EWWI COME SHAMMI!" Finally, the lizard made contact with Teit's arm and scratched gouges into it. Teit hissed and dropped it back onto the counter with a thunk. He eyed the wound, then the creature, malice in his eyes.

"263, cease actions and report to the medical lab for testing." The voice said. Teit snarled at the lizard, turning around and stomping out.

Shammi whimpered and curled her tail around herself. Ewwi would come. Shammi just knew it.

Master

The wounds still hurt when she woke up.

Curling herself tighter into a ball, Erishi forced herself to think about the events of the night. Lots of pain. Not fun. And where was she now? Stick man's couch. Julian's couch. Right. That was his name.

Ow. Eyes hurt. She squinted around, blinking rapidly. That's what she'd forgotten. Eyeballs. Eyes shutting, she reached around on the table for her hand. Aha. There it was. Now, sneak out all sneaky like.

She actually exited with grace, hopefully not waking up Julian on her exit. Wobbly leaning against the walls she dragged herself back towards the room. Erishi made sure that she didn't open her eyes until she made it to her bathroom.

First thing first: she splashed eye drops into her eyes and removed the dual colored contacts, replacing them with her glasses. There. She could at least see now.

The fun part came next. Hell or high water, that hand needed to go back in fast. Closing her eyes, she felt her way to her room. Her desk light was flipped on and her hand dropped on the desk. She sat in her chair, leaning over the appendage. Not taking her eyes off of it, she reached into the desk drawer and took out her screwdriver set and started prodding around. The routing wires would have to be replaced, of course. But the hand itself seemed to be in working order.

Good news. How wonderful. Erishi knew she couldn't rebuild the hand in her current state.

Taking a deep breath, she reached back in the drawer and took out another case. It smelled faintly of antiseptic. Like the base.

Erishi hated that smell.

Inside the case were scalpels. Surgeon's quality, sharp enough to cut just about anything. Another drawer held more cable for her arm. She shuddered slightly before tucking hand, cables, and scalpels into a bag.

There was one person she could turn to. As long as he didn't kill her before he heard her story.

Master.

* * *

His hand collided painfully with her cheek.

"So." His eyes were narrow. "You come back."

"Master-"

"Shut. Up. Now."

There was never any room to maneuver with the Master. She sat on the floor, hair covering her face, cowering.

"Master-"

Smack! This blow sent her skidding into the wall. Erishi curled into a ball and whimpered.

"I've half a mind to kill you, right now." He warned, stepping towards her.

"Someone's half beat you there, master!" Her voice was ranging on hysterical.

Pathos took a half a step back and surveyed her, his hands on his hips. Finally, he said: "Bed. Now."

Erishi wasn't allowed to explain what happened until after they had finished, Pathos had taken a shower, and after his first three cigarettes. "So," He asked, eyes narrow. "Why've you come back to me?"

"I need to get my hand back in place." Erishi replied, wrapped in blankets. "And I feel hurts now. I need you to cut for me, and hook it back up. I brought supplies."

"The bag on the table?" Pathos asked around the cigarette. Erishi nodded. He left the room and returned a few minutes later with the bag. He beckoned Erishi into the bathroom and sat her on the side of the tub, left arm in.

"If you can feel, it'll hurt like hell. If you start screaming, I'll knock you out faster than you realize." He warned. Erishi nodded, nestling everything but her arm deeper into her blanket cocoon. " 'Bout a quarter inch in, right?"

"Yes."

He started at the wrist, running the left side first. Erishi did her very best to space out, trying to block out the smell of blood. Pathos cut all the way up to her shoulder and looked into the wound. "Looks like it pulled out good. You managed to engineer that right."

"Erishi is trying not to pass out, Master." Erishi mumbled, tears in her eyes.

"Ah. Good for you." He measured off a proper amount of cable and clipped it, inserting it in the gash and sewing the wound closed. He repeated the procedure on the right side of her arm before securing the hand in place. "Move your fingers, please."

Erishi didn't answer. Her head hung limply in the blanket cocoon. Pathos grabbed her by her shoulder and delivered two sharp smacks to her face. "Move your fingers, now." He warned.

Tears in her eyes, Erishi complied. Though the movement was halting, the hand was correctly hooked up. The purple haired girl let out a sob, her whole frame shuddering.

Pathos shoved her into the shower and turned it on. "I won't have you bleeding everywhere, Ree." He said, spraying off the arm. Erishi curled up as best she could. As soon as he was satisfied that the arm wasn't dripping blood, he turned the shower off and bandaged it up. After removing her blanket cocoon, he threw her over his shoulder and tossed her on the bed. "Go to sleep. I won't have you dying of exhaustion on me. Not yet."

Shattered

"Hey. Get up."

Master wasn't annoyed yet. His voice was just mildly annoyed. Erishi curled tighter into a ball.

"Up. Now."

Unfortunatly, Master's temper hadn't improved with age. He grabbed the edge of the bed, picked it up, and tipped her off. She fell to the ground in a tangle of blankets.

"Shower. Now. You smell."

"Early, Master..."

"You smell. You're in my house. Get your a** in the shower or you'll regret it."

"Okay..."

Erishi sleepily dragged herself into the shower and sat under the water, trying to wake up. Her body did not want to move at all. After a knock on the door and a few choice words, Pathos entered, pushing the shower door open. Erishi blinked up at him, water dripping in her eyelashes. He sighed, grabbed the shampoo, and started washing her hair.

"I've never seen you this bad." He muttered. She just kept blinking.

"Master...?" She asked, frowning.

"I'll call in those people you hang with. Those two fags, that man whore, the girl with big tits. Anyone else I should call?"

"Ummm... No?" Erishi was putting faces to Pathos' nicknames. "Master is not politically correct."

"I don't particularly try."

* * *

"Ewwi..." Shammi whined, curling her tail around herself. This place was horrible! The people in coats kept poking her with needles and calling her 'it'. That wasn't nice.

"Ewwi is dead." Teit calmly said, not even bothering to open his eyes.

"No." The lizard girl sniffled, covering her eyes with her hands. She wasn't quite sure what dead was, but it ment that Ewwi wouldn't be coming for her.

Teit didn't respond.

"Bad place." Shammi finally said after a few minutes of silence. "Bad, bad place."

The bird man finally opened his eyes and blinked at Shammi. One eye looked towards the people observing them. He smiled. "Yes. Bad place."

"Shammi no like." The lizard mumbled. "No no like. Bad bad."

"Well, what does... Shammi like?" The creature did not have a number, so the name it kept saying would have to be what he called it.

"Jello." Shammi desperetley clung to her one normal conversation so far. "And fur. Tails. Teefs. Ewwi. Shammi loves Ewwi." She covered her eyes with her hands again and let out a low whine.

There were no more questions.

Regroup, return

"Pathos." Han greeted evenly. His dark brown hair hung in his dark eyes. Pathos grinned up at him.

"Well! If it isn't f** number one! Where's the bottom?" He asked. Han watched him. But, even with those dark eyes, Han wasn't able to spook Pathos. He just kept grinning.

"Dam's on his way." Placing one foot in front precicley in front of the other, Han crossed the room and looked at the damange. There was a lot of blood. "How is she?"

"Eh. She's herself. Is that a good thing?" The redhead shrugged and sat on a chair, idly massaging his left shoulder.

"You're hurting her." It wasn't a question.

"It's her concern, not yours."

Dam broke the silence by tromping into the room, cleaning supplies and paint dangling from buckets on his arms. He was chatting animatedly with Adrian, who also had his arms full of buckets.

"Where's the girl with the boobs?" Pathos asked, holding his hands in front of his chest in demonstration. Adrian gritted his teeth.

"She's picking up Erishi."

* * *

"Ree-" Suiki called, poking her head in the door warily. There was off-key singing coming from somewhere in Pathos' home. She followed the singing untill she found the bathroom. Erishi was looking at herself in the mirror, idly snipping her multicolored hair. "Oh, Ree..."

"Hiiiii~!" Erishi beamed, surrounding area covered in hair clippings. She blinked several times and tilted her head to one side. "Hello?"

"Erishi?"

"Yes?"

Suiki thought of what she could say. Finally, she forced a smile. "Ready to go?"

"Yup!" Erishi carefully picked up a patched plushie and started out, humming loudly. Suiki watched her, smile fading. She was loosing Erishi again.

The two women returned to Erishi's apartment and everyone but the girl started cleaning. Erishi was too busy showing the stuffed animal around and investigating blood splatter. Finally, she stood in the middle of the room and looked around, biting her lip.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Dam called over.

"No, thank you." Erishi said, still biting her lip. "Erishi has too few of them."

Pathos snorted his agreement. Han kicked him in the shins.

"Someone-" Erishi started to spin in circles, holding her plush tight. "Someone should be here-"

Light clicked on in her eyes and her features set in misery. "Shammi-" Her voice sank to a whisper and she exited the living room and lay on her bed. Han followed her in after a few moments.

"I'm dying, aren't I?" Erishi's voice was strangley calm.

"Probably." Han honestly said, sitting on the side of her bed.

"I'll go downhill faster now. I don't have Shamilade to concentrate on anymore. I don't have anything to focus on." Erishi turned towards him and blinked, her eyes calm. "I don't want to die." It was stated very factually.

"Well then, we'll just have to find the lizard, okay?"

"Fine."

Fighting a downhill battle

Heavy breathing, punctuated by sobs, filled the room.

"Subject has stopped struggling. Proceeded with examination."

Shammi whimpered, struggling in vain against her bonds. She made a halfhearted cry of "Ewwi-" before squeezing her eyes shut. The man in a long coat leaned over her, scalpel in his hand glinting in the high lights. He started the incision around her left eye, and the little girl started to scream.

"-Shammi!" Erishi jerked from her bed, reaching out into the air with one arm. She panted heavily, shoulders shuddering as her hand fell to the bed. "Oh, Shammi...." She curled her legs under herself and curled up, whimpering.

There was a small scuffle in the hallway and her door opened, Han peeking his head in. "You dead?" He asked, eyes half open.

"Do I look dead to you?" She snapped, sitting up straight and glaring at Han. His eyes widened, but only slightly.

"Erishi?" He asked slowly. Still breathing hard, Erishi stared at him, teeth bared. For a very long minute, she kept glaring. Then the glare dissipated, replaced by a very broken look. She started whimpering again. Han crossed the room and draped an arm around her shoulder. She curled into his side and clung to him, weeping.

"Erishi is so scared-" She whimpered, clinging tightly to his shirt. "Erishi does not want to be crazy- Erishi does not want to be dead-"

"Shhhh..." Han gently patted her shoulder. She kept wailing, rocking back and forth. "We're getting information. Then we can act."

"They do bad, bad things, they'll hurt Erishi's Shammi, they do such bad things there!" She said, refusing to let go.

He started to stroke her hair, rocking back and forth with her until she stopped crying. When she was still, he lay her back down and pulled the blankets up to her chin, giving her a pat on the head.

"She's going downhill quickly." He warned when he entered the kitchen. Dam reached up and held onto his hand. Pathos sighed and pulled on his hair.

"Don't think I can see that? She's ******** violent." Pathos paused for a moment. " 'Specially while we're-"

"Pathos. Don't care to hear about your sex life." Dam rubbed his forehead.

"You sure?"

"Positive."

"Eh." Pathos took a pull from his beer and shrugged. "I think I should see a doctor, anyway."

"Not. Me." Dam groaned, hitting his head on the table.

"Wouldn't want you lookin' there anyway!"

Back in the bedroom, Erishi was shocked into consciousness again by a hand on her mouth. "Don't scream." A very cool, smooth voice whispered in her ear. "Or I'll slit her throat myself."

Teit tugged her to her feet and stared at her. "Crawl through the window."

Erishi's lip curled up. "******** you." She returned, eyes narrow. Teit's eyes widened slightly, and an almost-smile hovered on his lips.

"Oh. Really?" He waited for a few moments.

". . .-No! Erishi go, okay? No hurt Shammi." The woman was shaking slightly, her eyes squeezing shut. "Okay? Okay?"

"Window. Now." He ordered. Whimpering, Erishi climbed through the window and onto the window ledge. Teit followed her through and pushed her down. She landed on all fours, waiting. "Run."

Erishi ran.

She wasn't too sure on why she was running, other than Teit wanted a chase. He probably wanted to chase her down and kill her, to use his knife to slit her throat, just like he'd killed the other girls.

She remembered him now. Skidding to a stop, Erishi turned around and found herself face to face with Teit. "I remember you."

"You should." He replied, looking down on her.

She had chased him down, years ago. Years and years before. He had been killing people. So Ethos 192 had been sent to capture him. He hadn't been difficult to find. All 192 had to do was follow the trail of blood.

192 found him on his latest kill, still slashing the girl's throat. He had looked up at her, teeth flashing in the moonlight. "Hello, lovely. Come to play?"

There was no reply to his question. 192 looked down it's nose at him, eyes dead. "Cease and surrender, John Rye."

"I think I'm having too much fun for that, dear." He stood and smiled at 192, holding up his knife. "Care to dance?"

"No." 192 said, kicking John in the face. Her next move broke his arm, and 192 finished by slamming his head into the ground. He was restrained and taken to prison. Several years later, he was inducted into the Ethos program, partially to replace the missing 192.

"Erishi is sorry." She said, eyes half lidded, chin resting on her chest. "Erishi wasn't herself then."

"Exactly." Teit grabbed her by the chin and forced her to look in his eyes. "I want that woman back. That woman with the black eyes."

"No-" She started, gripping is wrist.

"Yes." His claws dug into her neck, a slight smile on his lips. "I want to see 192 again. I want to kill her, not you."

"Erishi.. Is not... Strong enough." Tears rolled down her cheeks and she closed her eyes. Teit picked her up off the ground, claws tearing into her neck. Her eyes snapped open, exactly at the same time her foot collided with his chest. He sprawled backwards into a tree and barley managed to duck before Erishi slammed her metal fist into the tree.

Her eyes were dead again. Teit let out a low laugh. "Well. Aren't you a sight for sore eyes?"

"-What do you mean she's not in her room?" Han asked, standing abruptly. "I just left her there ten minutes ago."

"Listen. She's not there. I just checked." Pathos rolled his eyes. "She probably jumped out the window and went for ice cream, or something."

Han shook his head in disgust. "I'm going to look for her." He tugged on a jacket and started out the door. Pathos watched him go, then walked to the room where Han slept. He emerged several moments later, whistling slightly and holding a gun. Why go searching for something that'd come your way, anyway.

The brown haired mech pilot tracked the footsteps into the woods. Han hastened his pace until he spotted Erishi. "Ree!" He called. She started to turn, and Han stopped in his tracks. Her face was covered in blood, her expression blank, and she was slowly tearing apart a black feathery wing. The owner of the wing lay staring at the sky, blood coming from his mouth and nose. "s**t."

Erishi dropped the wing parts on the ground and took a step towards Han. "Han Nokubai-" She didn't get a chance to finish, because Han decided that caution was the better part of valor and was running back. Erishi was right on his tail as he climbed the stairs and threw open the door to the apartment.

"Pathos, wat-"

Two gunshots sounded in the air. The first caught Erishi in the shoulder, spinning her around. The second missed terribly. Pathos strode over and grabbed Erishi by the wounded shoulder and rammed her against the wall. "Now, love, let's just calm down now."

She was breathing through her nose, looking at Pathos with wide eyes. After taking a few more breaths she started to scream, holding her shoulder. Pathos let her fall to the floor and he tossed Han back his gun. "Now, if you're ready to behave, we can dress that shoulder."

"Yes, Master." Erishi hung her head listlessly. Han, glaring at Pathos, picked Erishi up. She hung limply in his arms before her eyes rolled up to look at him. "I'm not strong enough to keep it back."

"I know." He ripped the shoulder of her shirt and looked at the wound. It wasn't much more than a light graze. Thank God Pathos couldn't aim.

"If it comes to it, put a bullet in me." Erishi said, her eyes serious. "I can barley stand being in this skull most of the time. But when the program takes over, it just drives me mad. So, do it. For me." The corner of her mouth pulled up slightly.

"Okay." Han said, stroking her hair.

"Thanks, Han. You understand me, right? You know what it's like-" Her eyes shut. They didn't open again. Han wrapped the shoulder and tucked her back into bed, standing watch.
