"Do you feel better now that you're done whining to me?"

Yulu's own expression had changed from playful bantering to one of a person looking down on another. What she had meant about probing, about being curious and bending? It had been a joke, but it looked like she'd hit quite a nerve. . .or at least a few nerves. Interesting.

"I'll tell you again until you get it through that head of yours that seems eternally dipped into numbweed - I don't care about your dragon or how you got her. I. don't. care. I'm talking to you not as Yulu would to Y'kar of Green Kannaroth, but as Yulu would to Y'kar, the person."

There was a strong emphasis on the last of her words, strong enough to sound like she was snapping them through her teeth at least. Yulu wasn't upset, far from it, but she was annoyed. Mildly, but still annoyed.

"And who gives a flying dung heap about being nosy? You may never see me again, not that you would suffer from that, but what if one day I was in a position that could aide you in many, many ways? What then?"

It was an odd example, but whatever. Yulu would take what she could give.

"No I don't feel better," Y'kar looked up, barely held back tears in his eyes. "Go on! Call me weak! Call me pathetic! Tell my guys don't cry. Maybe I am oversensitive on the subject but I can't help it! When people stab you over and over in the same place it sharding well hurts. Yea, I had it easy before I Impressed, I'm not tough like you are so you can just laugh! I don't care if you're in a position to be useful to me to help me in the future I thought you might be my friend. Nobody talks to me just as Y'kar Yulu. There is no 'just' Y'kar. There was Yisenkar, but now there's Y'kar and Kannaroth. I'm a rider, and my dragon affects every aspect of my every day, that's just how it is and mostly people think either less of me because of her, or think I'm some kind of mastermind with his eye on world domination!" Well, she probably wouldn't be useful anyway. If this made her hate him or scorn him it was really no skin off his nose.

"I could take some skin off her nose," Kannaroth said, looking up with red eyes and bared teeth. "We dragons can defend Ours, you know."

Internally, Y'kar rolled his eyes. "Feel able, do you? Even if I actually was upset you'd not be able to bat at her. Growling's good though, keep it up." While he was talking to his dragon however, his act didn't slip for a moment. His body tensed, he laid a hand on Kannaroth's neck, and he glared over at Yulu with a mixture of anger and hurt. What a useless wench she was.

"Clearly I've failed whatever test you had for me," he said, apparently trying to snap but being foiled by a slightly shaking voice. "I'm just too much of a wuss to hang out with a guy like so, so we'll get out of your way now." Without a backward glance, Y'kar strode off towards the Weyr.

Kanaroth stopped long enough to hiss menacingly at Yulu before trotting after her lifemate, nudging his leg as she caught up. "Waste of time then?"

"No," Y'kar sniffed and wiped his eyes as he hurried on, smiling slightly internally, "you got your nap, didn't you?"

". . . ."

Yulu rose to her feet, frowning as the boy huffed even more and even looked like he was going to cry. As his dragon roused from her sleep (growling, naturally) and they started to go off, she actually felt herself wanting to apologize for hurting him like she had. The girl was just like sandpaper, rough and abrasive to everything even when trying to be delicate, but she couldn't really be blamed. She'd been raised no differently by that b*****d of a Father, so how did she know what was and was not acceptable?

When he actually made his way out, insulting himself as he went, she felt a nerve snap in her head. This was not acceptable, the brat would have to learn a thing or two. Yulu would teach him, most gladly.

"Stop right there, you wuss of an excuse for a rider with a shoddy dragon at your side. Don't get too full of yourself."

Now she sounded angry, livid almost. Her harsh voiced sounded deeper, almost commanding in its tones, and Yulu took strides from where she was towards the pair that hopefully would have turned around. She knew there was a chance Y'kar would ignore the insult and probably stave off his dragon to do the same, but considering they'd just been speaking somewhat cordially to one another it may catch him a little off guard.

"I don't know why in Faranth's name you think I was testing you over something, shells I didn't even know I sounded like I was. Is asking you things some sort of quiz to you? Is wanting you to be curious about me some kind of code for something? Shards."

It wasn't in Yulu's nature to just keep dropping slang like she was, the occasional Faranth or shells escaping her lips, but to do it so rapidly she was getting pretty flustered. No one at the Weyr had infuriated her thus far to the point she was getting at, though this kind of rage seemed directed at the fact she was looking at someone who reminded her of herself. Weak with a low self-esteem, not knowing who to turn to and hiding behind a facade that would eventually crack if not maintained with the highest amount of care.

Yulu hated herself.

"Don't you say that about her!" Y'kar halted abruptly at Yulu's words and spun to face her. Beside him, Kannaroth turned and started to growl again, flaring her wings up to make herself look larger. "You can say what you want about me, fine," Y'kar went on, voice shaky but adamant, "I'm not the strongest person that ever lived but Kannaroth is brilliant and I'm not going to let you deny it!" Fists clenched, Y'kar genuinely found himself nervous. This wasn't going to end in a fight was it? He was no good in fights... So it was best to try to defuse it a bit. He broke eye contact and wiped his eyes dry again, which was quite a futile gesture really considering tears were welling up.

"Everything's a test," he muttered, "everyone's just... just waiting for me to do something wrong. Yea I wanted to know more about you, to be friends but I was just scared, okay, that I'd put you off, that you'd think I was... I don't know," he shrugged lamely. "I just didn't want to ask too much was all and I... I don't know, I was too nervous or scared or something, or just too stupid to be able to think of something else to ask. I only just met you, how am I supposed to just know you're not like everyone else, wanting me to fail, liking it when they get the stupid little green rider wound up?"

Well, she'd come after him, that was interesting. What did that mean? Either she was sorry for upsetting him or she wanted to start a fight, those were the obvious answers. Kannaroth was leaning against him now, her wings still flared and her eyes still red. If Yulu did go for him, she'd try to get in the way even if she couldn't harm the b***h. She'd protect him.

"Of course, you are Mine!" Kannaorth snarled. "If she springs at you I shall be in the way, and she shall have to answer for attacking a weyrling unprovoked. She would surely be sent away for that, and I would find such an outcome well worth a bruise or two."

Y'kar wasn't sure that their place in the Weyr was secure enough for any punishment to be brought against someone who tried to harm them. He dropped a hand onto Kannaroth's arched back. "Stopit," he muttered under his breath, "Kanna you're just making it worse, please stop it."

The green growled, turned her head to Y'kar, and then allowed the vocalization to die away. She didn't give up her defensive posture though; if the female made a move, she would be ready.

Yulu gave a small sigh of inner relief as the boy stopped at her taunt, turning towards her with dragon at his side spread and angry. It was taste a lie to say that Yulu wasn't a bit unnerved by the dragon's show of colors and rage, but it was knowledge that kept her from fearing anything more than just barks and growls. A dragon could no longer hurt past the time of ignorance, but it never was wrong to be slightly wary of it all.

There was some hesitation in her steps as she moved closer to the boy, her eyes not moving from his face to the dragon. It was a mental chant inside her head to focus on the boy, the beast was just barring fangs at best, so it was through that little bit that Yulu found herself about an arm's reach away from the youth who'd been clearly crying. Yulu hated making people cry, at least people she considered to be good anyway. . . and Y'kar was a good kid.

In her opinion, at least. A bit of a priss who needed to stop whining and being fixated on the opinions of others, but a good kid none the less. He had a good dragon too, if not one to be watched out for, because really? There was no such thing as a failure dragon - everything had its uses.

"It wasn't a test. You can believe me if you want, or not believe me if it makes you feel better and more vindicated. I don't test people I like or just meet, there's no point in driving them away so quickly."

She crossed her arms and stared down the boy and Kannaroth, her expression still soured from irritation but not one that would indicate she wished any harm on either of them. Yulu was never the violent type with her actions, fighting would have gotten her kicked out of Healer Hall so very quickly, but she had learned to be quite combative with her words.

"Y'kar, you're not stupid and I don't want you to fail. I want you to understand something, but it seems I'm the only failing here instead."

"Oh yea?" Y'kar continued his inspection of the ground. "Well... Well... Well I feel like an idiot now," he muttered, wiping his face on his sleeve again. "I overreacted." Taking a deep breath, he looked back up. Yulu was clearly annoyed, but seemed to be genuine which was nice; people not wanting him to fail was a pleasant change. Whether she actually was genuine or not was immaterial for now; he would seem to believe her, but reserve judgment until he knew more.

"You really don't care at all," he went on, half stating half questioning. "You'll judge me when you know me a bit better... but you'd be right to judge me as a bit of an idiot at the minute I guess," he smiled wanly, "I'm too quick to jump to conclusions I guess... So I'm sorry I shouted like that."

As her lifemate's posture relaxed, Kannaroth relaxed too, and her eyes faded to a rather duller red. Clearly she was still peeved, because this girl was as much of a pain in the tailfork as the rest of the world, but seen as the female wasn't actually going to assault Y'kar she was no longer enraged. She did however want to head back inside, and so she hoped this wasn't going to take too much longer. If it did, she was just going to head back by herself.

"No, I guess I'm the one. . . .who, well. Anyways, let's get this misunderstanding cleared up. It wasn't a test, you didn't fail anything, I didn't want you to fail anything. You're a good kid who's going to go far, once you find your place in the Weyr. It hadn't even been a month or two since you Impressed Kannaroth, so who's to say what's going to happen."

Yulu paused, wondering if she was digging herself in deeper. She'd almost said she was sorry despite not really being sorry, regret never an option in her mind of things to possess, but somehow she'd managed to cover it up quite well. Score one for her and quick thinking.

"And it seems like Kanna wants to go inside based on how she's looking at you and me, so I should probably let you go. I seriously don't think you'll want to see me again, and I don't rightly blame you...but if you need someone to talk to, to yell at and just vent out your frustrations, you can come and find me. I won't back down from you and I won't judge you, since you're...well, someone I enjoyed talking to."

She reached over with her hand, not caring the motion probably made Kannaroth growl or do whatever it is she wanted to do, and Yulu gave the young rider a gentle thump on the shoulder. He was taller than her, it was funny how she hadn't noticed when they were sitting down, so it looked a little silly to a bystander.

"Plus I'm counting on you to keep your word, Y'kar of Green Kannaroth. Don't let me down, show me what you're made of, let the whole Weyr know who you are."

"We will don't you worry," Y'kar gave a more genuine - make that apparently genuine - smile and nodded to Yulu. "It's not like I'm going to avoid you or anything either... well maybe I will for a few days, given I just got upset like a silly little baby, but once I get over being embarrassed... I would like to get to know you better, if we ever run into each other when neither of us are too busy again." For a good while at least that wasn't hugely likely. It wasn't impossible, but free time really was in short supply, and most of it was spent either in the springs or back at the weyrling dorms.

Kannaroth nudged his hip insistently at this point, and he shot Yulu an apologetic smile. "Really gotta go now, her ladyship is sleepy. See you around, venting buddy." Giving the 'guy' one last grin Y'kar turned and set off towards the weyrling dorms, Kannaroth trotting by his side. All in all he wasn't quite sure what to make of this experience just yet, other than an amusing anecdote to tell Jasrai and A'li, that was.
