Yes... Half Human.

They could always use the Time War as something that either removed the limit because Gallifrey is gone or Rassilon gave every Time Lord a new set of regenerations.

Whatever they do, they'd have to find a way of explaining it in the show. even if it's just him rambling at 90mph. They can't make it seem like they're ignoring the rules, but it's not likely that the companion would know about the limit. So he wouldn't need to tell them. I think he'll probably just do some quick rambling.
