There was a tug on his left foot, causing J'lin to cease his eating in confusion. What? Deprith? No, he thought, glancing at his dragoness to see her still watching Nachith. It amused him to see her like this, ignoring the world in favor of one blue dragon. Especially with the future queen right in front of him!

You stop that, J'lin! Deprith growled, breaking her gaze away from Nachith to lean over her rider's shoulder. You haven't touched your vegetables yet.

“Ugh. Would you care to eat them for me? Besid-” he broke off, glancing down as the pressure on his foot increased. “Hey! What're you doing? Go on, that's my boot!” He tried to pull his feet away from Makereth, only succeeding in helping the dragon pull more of the laces loose. In fact, thanks to J'lin's help, the dragonet managed to score the entire lace!

He was about to lunge after the dragon when Deprith took one of his sleeves in her mouth, her eyes a bright orange. J'lin! Sit! Don't you DARE make a scene and embarrass me! she turned to Makereth, Give Mine back that! He is enough of a fool as it is, and does NOT need your assistance to add to that image! And you too had best behave!

“Thanks for that vote of confidence,” J'lin muttered, shifting in his seat as Dorath commanded. He couldn't help but to throw a glance at the blue dragon and grin, pleased that he managed to upset Deprith. She, on the other hand, was anything but happy, flexing her wing and shamelessly using it to hit J'lin in the back of the head under the pretext of stretching.

J'lin hissed and rubbed the back of his head, turning to B'ram and returning the nod with one of his own. “Pleased to meet you both. I think our dragons know each other.” Now that earned the nervous flutter and shifting from Deprith as she attempted to sit up straighter, trying to project herself as a Proud and Regal Green dragoness – unlike that rowdy Lofrewth. To her, Deprith pointedly ignored.

When the Weyrwoman called for attention, both rider and dragonet gave it. Deprith didn't need to remind her rider of the importance of it – even J'lin knew not to mess around when it came to the Weyrwoman. Besides, attention was on them. As far as J'lin was concerned, only his peers needed to know that he was MUCH better than them and knew more than they did. To any adult, J'lin was the good Candidate, disproving the rumors of his scuffles and bad mouth.

The rider couldn't help but to tense up at the first “rule.” Respect? Respect for her? He turned in his seat to watch the Weyrwoman, catching a smug, superior blue-eyed look from Deprith. Oh Shards was this not going to be fun. No drinking was easy enough, J'lin never caught the hang of holding down beer anyway. No sex? Whatever, J'lin's world started and ended with him. Or it did – Deprith was determined to set him on the straight path with her there too. Boy, was he in for a shock once she started to rise for Flights!

J'lin bowed his head, closing his eyes and suppressing a shudder as the two unfortunate Candidates were mentioned. That blue... One of those Candidates could have been him, had Deprith not been there to stop him. He bit his lip, faltering in his thoughts. That could have been him.

But it wasn't and won't ever be, J'lin. Deprith crooned, nudging him from behind. I will not let it be! Ever!

He breathed a sigh of relief, slouching and leaning back into the support of His. That was a comforting thought.

Now eat your vegetables.

...Or maybe not.

Luci had been speaking with D'astel by time Sharath reached them. The Weyrleader didn't bat an eye at the interruption. He expected no less, and if anything, what surprised him was she had waited this long. (He hadn't heard Dorath command all of them to sit down before, of course, as he was not a dragon.) Knowing a young goldrider was still a goldrider, he rose and ushered the Wingleaders, Wingseconds and others present to do the same, Luci aside. "Junior Weyrwoman," he greeted politely, soon finding himself with a problem: He had no idea what her name was either.

Sharath, Kentoth spoke to the new gold but two seconds later; a request from his rider no doubt. Please tell me, what is the name of your rider? Once he knew, he would tell both His and Dorath. The whole table would know her name soon enough, and all would remember it.

Turning to her, Luci smiled at who was perhaps the Weyr's future Weyrwoman, and then down at Sharath. Dragons didn't instinctively share the family ties that humans did. Come to think of it, she remembered a bronze from the clutch Dorath had come from chasing her once. Still, as she looked the gold over, she couldn't help but feel like a proud parent. Unfortunately, sometimes being a parent meant being a Bad Guy. "You'll sit with the other Weyrlings for now," she answered kindly. Her word would not be enough for Sharath, but Dorath's would.

Sit with the other Weyrlings, one gold said to another. It was a gentle order, but an order none the less.

"I have all the time in the world for you, my lovely girl. What is it you need?"

Uuni nodded at her fellow rider, extracting the cup of ale and handing it over Kesslan's way. The wingrider would probably drink it, and then it would be out of harms way. He was kind enough about it. He didn't get angry or take offense like she might have done, and it was admirable.

She looked over at Regedth and couldn't help but to grin, and Makereth was too busy going after laces to notice until it was too late and his tail was captured.

He was all too content to let Regedth have his tail, though, claiming victory as he pulled away with string. Just in time to get a Deprith scolding.

He gave her a draconic grin, displaying teeth, and darted out from under the table with the string in his possession. Come and get it from me! he chided back to the angry green and headed straight in the direction of Belram and Nachith.

Once there, he proudly presented Belram with his string, settling onto his haunches exactly where he was at the order from the gold dragon, holding his head up, the laces trailing from either side of his mouth. Yes, folks, he could also play matchmaker.

In the mean time, Uuni had alighted her eyes on Kesslan with the broadest of smiles. "Yes, Makereth, that's right." The Weyrwoman told them to take their seats in that moment, and Uuni reached out for Kesslan's hand, leading the two of them to a place to sit.

She was quiet as could be while the processions continued, swallowing with the somber air of the candidates deaths. It was not something she wanted to think about, and she leaned on Makereth's cheerful mind and Kesslan's shoulder for support.

But once that was over, she could finally talk. "Avery said you were in the stands. I was wondering when you'd show." She wasn't going to ask where Avery was, of course not, but she was undeniably curious as her eyes scanned the room. "It feels weird, this whole thing, I mean. How'd you cope so fast?" Her head was still spinning from trying to be in two places at once. But damn it, she felt pleased, happy, and just a little less. . . well, lonely was the word?

Amelia blinked when the Weyrleader stood and smiled, bowing to him as well though when the other prominent members of the Weyr stood as she paused, at a loss. “I’m not a Weyrwoman… I’m just an excavator, sir, you don’t have to. None of you do…” Her gaze shifted between them, meeting each of their gazes, honoured to be greeted thusly.

Sharath, however, only nodded and huffed in approval. Good, they recognized her rider…. Or not. The gold lifted her head proudly as she responded, Mine is Amelia. Goldrider Amelia. Her gaze flashed across those gathered, expecting each and every one of them to remember Hers.

As Luci answered and said to sit with the other Weyrlings, Amelia nodded, almost relieved. She wasn’t sure she’d be comfortable sitting among people whom she knew so very little about. Feeling out of place, she smiled in response, “Yes, Weyrwoman.”

Sharath, however, snorted and glared at the Weyrwoman, posturing with anger at the very suggestion of such a thing. Mine! You are a goldrider! We are to sit here. Here with the other goldrider. How dare she! Orange whirled in the proud dragonet’s eyes and Amelia inwardly groaned. And then Dorath’s instructions rang through to Sharath and the orange swirled red as the little queen hissed at Luci, How dare she! How dare she… She’s just jealous, Mine. Of you and I.

Amelia, surprised by the switch in opinion she felt from the other glanced to Luci and back to Sharath. To go from anger to… apathy? so quickly… Dorath must’ve said something, then. Sighing, Amelia stepped forward and dropped into a crouch, regardless of the ranking members about her, and placed a hand on Sharath’s cheek, Sharath, stop. I think you may be too young… or I might not be right… or something. She wasn’t entirely sure why, actually.

Sharath turned then, ignoring the Weyrwoman completely and looked hard at Amelia, You are right, Amelia. Always, now and later. You are Mine and you are right.

Again, Amelia couldn’t suppress the smile that brightened her face at that. Sharath was so entirely adamant, it was hard to doubt her. There was no room for anything but what she said… and it soothed the worry that had sprang to Amelia’s mind.

Standing when the gold had settled, even if she still fumed at Luci, Amelia nodded, “I… ah, have no idea what I’m doing. I was just attending a hatching… all of my training is to do with Excavation, ma’am. I could build a weyr for Sharath but I know next to nothing about dragons…. Or what’s expected of me… or even who the Weyrlingmaster is supposed to be. I’ve never met D’astel…” She glanced to the door, wondering if that had been D’astel to leave earlier and laughed softly, “I’m sorry… I’m not a very good Weyrling…”

But Sharath would not have her rider look foolish and fairly snapped a question at Dorath in a petulant attempt to rebel, Who is D’astel Dorath?

"Sir?" D'astel tried not to, but he had to laugh at least a little. The others, well, most of them laughed a lot. K'ban's son was not entertained by this matter at all, and rose silently to stomp off, probably in search of his father. If anyone noticed, they didn't care, too captivated by their new goldrider.

"Sir, she says!" A wingsecond, Kessa, laughed out loud, leaning back in her chair and wiping the tears from her eyes. "Who'd have thought Kentoth could make a gold inclined to pick such a proper and polite young lady!"

"Don't let him hear you say that," D'astel warned in false terror. Had Kessa been truly insulting his dragon, he may feel inclined to defend him, but he knew the woman enough to tell when what she said was in jest. Besides, it was probably true Kentoth would not have helped create such a dragon; he knew this was not his bronze at work.

Luci had a more fond smile now and tried to shush the roaring table with a wave of her hand and a few words. "Alright, you lot, quiet down so I can hear her!" They did stop, but it was not because of her. The source of their silence was the hiss, and afterward, most of their expressions became more somber and serious.

"Amelia," D'astel started, now that he knew her name. Luci held a hand up in front of him and his words ceased. It was not proper--nor allowed--for a dragon to act that way to a Weyrwoman, but for the time being, said Weyrwoman was more interested in how the rider responded to it.

She listened to everything Amelia had to say, hanging on every word, before she said anything herself. "I understand more than you think, Amelia. I think this is a matter we should discuss in private first, though." Navigating out from behind the tables and chairs, she reached her new pupil and whispered wisely, "First rule of being a goldrider: Never let anyone but another goldriders know you're unsure about something."

Hush, young one, Dorath instructed Sharath softly. It is time for you to listen, not to speak.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 12, 2009 1:09 am

Amelia’s expression became confused as the table erupted into laughter and she glanced around, unsure whether to smile or glare – at least until some of the comments rang through. Oh, they were amused because of her greeting…? Odd. Scratching her head, she laughed softly and grinned.

When the table quieted, Sharath snorted and rustled her wings with an indignant look upon her face. As far as she was concerned, there was nothing further to discuss here. There were better things to do then to endure such ridicule. They were laughing at her rider! She glared at each of them in turn, daring them to speak poorly of Amelia. Telling her to sit somewhere was one thing, belittling Amelia was something else entirely.

As the Weyrwoman spoke, Amelia looked rather relived. She was liking Luci so far, she seemed nice and welcoming. It made Amelia wonder at her nervousness moments before and the tension began to dissipate from her muscular shoulders as she relaxed before the scrutiny of those gathered. When Luci whispered, however, Amelia’s shoulders bunched up again and she could not help the blush that coloured her cheeks. “Oh… but…” She tilted her head to look at the table once more, not thinking to lower her voice, “I thought all of you, together, ran the Weyr? Maybe I’ve been living in a hole too long, but isn’t that the way it works? Wouldn’t asking for help, or lending help, be something you wanted?”

Sharath harrumphed as she was told remain quiet and lay down then, tail twitching from side to side like an irate cat. Mine. Hurry up, I am finished here. There are better things to do.

"Let's talk about it later," Luci whispered. She stepped away from the girl, but remained close enough to pat her on the back. Everything else that needed to be said could be said aloud. For now. "Take Sharath's advice and get to know your public." In sync with her words, she nodded toward the Weyrling table--or more, the Weyrlings themselves. "You and I will have more than enough time together to discuss things."

Giving Sharath a final, calculating glance, she chuckled. "By the way, that guy you're entertaining with the ugly mug and the hair on his face is D'astel, the Weyrleader."

Because he was already looking in that direction, B'shir noticed Amelia's conversation with the Weyrwoman, though he could not make out what was said. He didn't try. No doubt it was not meant for his ears anyway. Sakneth was more interested, but when it became apparent that he was not going to find out without actively eavesdropping - which B'shir would not allow - he snorted dismissively and said, Women's things. Probably unimportant.

B'shir doubted that. While Weyrwoman probably did have frivolous conversations, he doubted the first conversation held between a current Weyrwoman and new goldrider were about the best sort of skin cream to keep their faces fresh and youthful. Or something. B'shir couldn't really remember what his sisters talked about. He saw them very rarely. He could recognize them on sight, of course, and he remembered their names, but details of their personal lives were beyond him. It had never particularly bothered him, since his life had been occupied with Rath and A'ram at the time. Now it would be occupied with Sakneth.

I want to know more about this Rath you keep thinking of, Sakneth demanded, resting his chin on the table beside B'shir's food. And would that be good food for me?

"Are you hungry?" B'shir asked in an undertone.

Not particularly. Just curious.

Sighing, B'shir held out a tuber for his dragonet to inspect. Sakneth sniffed it, licked it, and glared balefully at B'shir. That is not food. Why do you eat it?

"Because I like it and it's good for me. And you'll meet Rath soon enough." B'shir had been very careful not to picture Rath in his head once he'd learned Sakneth's opinions on chromatic dragons. The dragon held them in very low regard, and wasn't likely to make an exception for Rath, who would be horrified by Sakneth anyway. That would be a fun meeting. "Why don't you get to know your clutchmates?"

They are inferior. Except Sharath. She is beautiful.

Amelia nodded slowly, "Am I to receive lessons from you and the Weyrlingmaster then? I think I may need the extra time..." Following the other's advice she'd whispered back as she glanced to Sharath. The gold was a handful even now, and Amelia had yet to learn her whole personlity.

Sharath tossed her head at the comment about her advice and regarded the Weyrwoman for a moment for settling down once more, her voice both protective and carrying a ring of ownership as she quipped to Amelia. It seemed the gold liked to pick at Dorath and her rider at the very least... Amelia sighed. Why couldn't she get along with golds too? She was fine with the other colours.... Yes, our public.

"Guy with the ugly mug and hair..." Murmurming to herself quietly, she glanced up and her eyes settled on D'astel - picking him out for the groomed beard about his chin. "Oh! Hi! I'm sorry... new faces and all that. I'll remember now, definitely." She smiled at him before look back to Luci.

"If you'll excuse me then...? I'll go acquaint myself with my fellows." She waited a moment before nodding her head in a farewell and offering a cheerful wave to D'astel and company then turned and began to walk back to the table.

Sharath rose as well and, with all the pretense and aplomb she could muster, walk away from Luci to take her place right beside Amelia. Feeling the brush of dragon against her side, Amelia's hand reached out to smooth palm over the young queen's shoulder as she glanced at her bondmate. You don't like them do you?

No. They laughed at you, Mine! And I only want what's mine. And what's mine is a place at that table - I am no different then Dorath. None. My place should be respected. She grumbled irritably, eyes whirling a strange mix of green and orange.

"Maybe one day, Sharath." Amelia soothed, not really concerned about it.

When they approached the Weyrling table once more, she waved to those she'd met before and was nudged, rather forcefully, towards the head of the table by Sharath. If they had to sit here, they would at least ensure their rank is respected - even if it wasn't elsewhere (petty, jealous golds). Amelia sensed that ire and prodded Sharath's nose, arching a brow, "Hey. This is a party don't get your panties in a knot, Sharath. It's not that big a deal."

The gold shot Amelia a disaproving look as the girl sat in the seat she'd been shoved towards and began to pile her plate with items from the buffet that had been set upon the table. "Hello again! Did I miss much?"
PostPosted: Mon Oct 12, 2009 12:31 pm

Now that the speeches seemed to be done for the time being, Ayishia took the opportunity to fill her plate with food, realizing now that her stomach was roaring it's complaints and she'd been too worried about getting Ptoth settled to notice. The blue sat comfortably at her side, though he moved his head from her lap, and set his chin on the edge of the table. He wasn't quite tall enough to lay his head down on the table, so instead his muzzle pointed upwards like a rocket.

As she helped herself to a bite of bubbly pie, she noticed the new goldrider approach and swallowed hastily (nearly choking) and at the same time lowered her head in a bit of respect. Once through, she forced a smile.

"Hello..." she led, unsure of the girl's name, but still wanting to appear social and aware of this woman's status among them all. She flushed, feeling embarrassed at her lack of knowledge, which Ptoth picked up and came to the rescue.

Greetings Sharath, Ptoth offered politely, removing his head from the table and also giving the gold a respectful bow, his eyes whirling a contented green/blue mix. You are looking extremely well this evening. And your rider too, of course. Mine apologizes for not knowing your rider's name just yet, but I'm sure that can be easily fixed if you or yours oblige...

Kalth's gaze trailed K'ban as he left the room in outrage, carefully storing the information for later even as he sent part of his attention to the Weyrwoman's table. It was an overly dramatic world that he'd entered into, that was certain.

Ra'ffer stood politely when Amelia returned to the table, seating after she, and a few other young women, had seated herself, and he spoke, not saying much at all, though his smooth baritone carried well, despite the stutter.

"W-w-w-welcome back to our t-t-table, Junior Weyrw-w-woman Amelia, and Gold Sh-sh-sharath."

---------

K'lan wasn't exactly meant to sit with the Weyrlings, but she took a brief seat during the Weyrwoman's speech, as not to be an eyesore. Moment's later, she stood, placing her hands on Uuni's shoulders to lean down to hug the girl. Her tone was warm, genuine as she murmured another quick 'congratulations' before answering the brunette's questions.

"Fast?" Her chuckle wasn't exactly humorous and she shook her head in apparent wonder at Uuni's oblivious nature. "It took me fortnights to cope, Uuni, you just... Didn't notice." Smiling to soften her words, dark eyes shifted to Makereth. "He's a happy soul. That'll be good for you."

R'ysan mostly watched the events going on around him rather than participated. While he he thought the food was great, he didn't feel quite comfortable with the group as a whole. After the announcement, that had the 'rules' he understood now why he shouldn't drink...for now. Well, the two rules seem to be for Reg's benefit and while he didn't get it completely, he wasn't about to put Reg into any sort of danger. Although, it would have been nice to know these requirements before hand.

Interestingly enough to him, the Weyrleader was going to be taking up their eduction for awhile. In the back of his mind, he wondered what he could get away with under that man's nose...his more impish nature starting to bleed through to his thoughts. In time, he'd surely find out because he was just that sort to test things out. However, now that he had Reg...well, he'd have to be more careful that was all there was to it.

R'ysan...I want that. She poked her nose on the table at a bubbly pie he had been picking at.

Oh I don't think you'll like this Reg. Its not something a dragon would eat.

But I want it. She wriggled about trying to get more of her head on the table towards the pie.

He shook his head and sighed. Alright... Then put a dot of the filling on his hand and wiped it on her tongue so she could taste.

She closed her mouth and her eyes blinked as she tasted it for the first time. If a dragon could make the Mr. Yuck face ...that was the look. EWH! Man food is awful! And for minutes afterwards she tried to get the taste off her tongue with water from a bowl.

He laughed out loud and watched her while he finished the tasty man food pie. I told you so.

The brown and his rider had ended up at the end of the weyrling table, with Darcth flopped down like he had been on the sands not so long ago. It was a compromise. They wouldn’t leave but Darcth could relax away from the limelight. M’hal had been eating and watching what was going on, relaying antics that Darcth couldn’t see and swapping information they knew. It was astounding to M’hal how much Darcth knew, coming out his egg just today and the conversation was enjoyable, and yet...

We should mingle more. We won’t make a good impression.

Darcth’s head rose quickly and his eyes had a whirl of yellow in them. Good impressions were very important to Darcth.

I could always introduce you to Rohath and we could meet his. Rohath is a fine dragon.

I do need to thank him for bringing you to me. Anyone else?

Sharath.
No hesitation.

Besides the lovely gold? M’hal’s mental voice teased. He loved Darcth but they needed to try to make friends - besides the browns idols! He himself was a friendly weyrbrat and he didn't think it was good for the brown to be so withdrawn already. It was wonderful that M'hal was allowed to know him so, but he did need other friends too. So M’hal racked his brains for someone to suggest for a minute.

Perhaps Awunrayth and Rieta?

Darcth considered it before sending to the green.

Awunrayth? Would you like Mine and Yours to meet?
PostPosted: Mon Oct 12, 2009 5:12 pm

Late, late, they were late!

They will understand, Mine. We were busy doing important things! Like visiting a friend in the infirmary... although that hadn't gone over particularly well, but K'han didn't regret it. It would have been wrong not to go. Still, we should find a seat. It is important to be respectful to the queen when Hers is speaking.

Fortunately, K'han managed to slip in as the Weyrwoman's speech was about to start, rather than miss it entirely. But rather than being able to pick which seat he wanted, he was forced to simply grab the first empty one that was close to him at the weyrling's table. It was, to Roheth's dismay, nearly at the opposite end from Sharath, who was taking her place at its head. They both remained silent through the speech. When Amelia and her gold returned, the bronze dragonet mentally called a greeting. I hope that you are well, my queen Sharath.

K'han, for his part, was more concerned with other matters. Namely, snagging a bucket of food for Roheth. "You didn't eat much," he noted aloud. Despite being among the first to hatch, Roheth waited until near the very end to Impress, and shortly after they had left for the infirmary, with only time for a few mouthfuls of meat in between. "Aren't you hungry?" Roheth blinked, and suddenly his eyes swirled with red. As if he had forgotten before! K'han grinned, a little ruefully. Clearly, his dragon's tendency to want to look after everyone else first was going to be something to watch carefully! But that's what he was there for, right? To make sure that someone looked after Roheth, too.

Hopefully whoever was sitting next to them didn't mind eating with the smell and sight of dragon's dinner nearby. Then again, anyone with a hint of squeamishness about raw meat would have to lose it quick, now that they were weyrlings. While we are here, we ought to see how Darcth is... And I would not say no to speaking to the others as well, if you would like. He'd watched them all Impress, after all, and now he wanted to meet Theirs and make sure that everything was all right after the stressful Hatching.

Welcome again, Sharath. Awunrayth greeted, not wanting to be scolded again. Her mindvoice was distracted though, and her eyes were for Rieta.

The announcement had more than sobered the usually upbeat girl. She now picked at her food, absently. One hand stroked the green, reaching for comfort, but she seemed unaware of the happenings at the table at large. She'd tried very hard, to know the other candidates. And now some were injured, others, gone. And here she was, with Awunrayth, with the one thing she could imagine that was better than dirt under her fingers and the sky above.

Awunrayth perked at the greeting, glad for anything to turn the thoughts of her bonded. Yours is lovely, Darcth. He will be a good friend for Mine. Are you well? Fed? The small dragon pressed her head firmly against Rieta's arm, catching the whole of her attention. It is sad, Mine. But it is not now. Now, Darcth wants you to meet His. It will be good for him to have friends. Darcth is shy.

Rieta lifted her head, remembering the brown the bronze had shepherded with a smile that widened quickly to a grin. Looking to the brown's rider, her expression remained open and friendly. No, now was not the time for morose recriminations. "Awunrayth says I am to meet you. They'll have us all best friends in no time, hey?"

She gestured enthusiastically to Ra'ffer. "Have you met Ra'ffer? He's with the lovely blue, Kalth. Your Darcth seems sweet. And of course, Awunrayth thinks they're both wonderful. She says that a lot."

I find most people are wonderful when given the chance.

Well, beautiful, you just hatched.
