Dragons had a knack for hatching at the most inconvenient times! Staring dolefully at his bowl of half-eaten breakfast, Bess waited until the other Candidates were well on their way to their alcoves before he finally moved from his position at the table. His gait was even and unhurried, odd for a Candidate, but when you had been Standing for as long as Bess had you learned a few things about Hatchings. First, dragons didn't give a damn about who was the first (or even the last) on the Sands. If Theirs arrived halfway through the Hatching, it wouldn't make a bit of difference to the dragonet. Second, everyone always tried to get onto the Sands at the same time. And that just made a big, uncomfortable mess. No, after...how many Hatchings was this now? Bess just knew how to take things at his own pace.

Dressing in the customary white robes, Bess was soon joining the other stragglers as they made their way out onto the Sands, tugging at his beard as he did so. Maybe today would be the last day he would ever have it. Scanning his eyes quickly across the clutch, he thought he saw one cracked egg but couldn't be too sure. From the whisperings in the other boys of the group he caught the word "bronze." Had it gone back into its shell? That was...odd.

He didn't have much time to ponder, though, as the little green catapulted herself into the group of Candidates. An odd Hatching indeed!

Avery had been delayed in her arrival, due to another arrival; that of her father and brother. To her delight they had been brought to the Weyr by none other than K'lan, and she'd gotten to catch up for only moments before the Candidates were called to the sands.

After that, it'd been a rush to prepare and make it on the sands, just before the cracking of the Sunshine Egg's shell. Winding her way through the crowd of Candidates, her fingers found Uuni's wrist in greeting as she whispered to the girl, pointing toward the Stands, after shooting Kestra a look.

"Kess is over there, with my daddy." Gaze shooting toward the eggs, she grinned. "Well, isn't he darling...? Uh, oh." A green came rampaging about, though she didn't seem in a bad mood, and Avery had to smirk at the boys with surprising sympathy. According to Kess, dragonet maulings hurt.

Trista gasped as she saw the green's claw come downward not having the time to do anything but watch the accident as it happened. Hoping the boy she had yet to meet wasn't badly hurt she looked over at the green. She couldn't help but feel a bit sad on her behalf. The poor thing looked rather upset, which was understandable given the circumstances.

It was a good time for Hatching - much better than the middle of the ngiht, that was for sure! Not that Belram would have complained either way. Eggs could hatch when they damn well pleased. He had thrown on his robes and rushed out to stand with the other boys, to wait and hope and watch the eggs crack and dragonets spill out. A bronze first, who decided to stay in his shell a little longer, and then a green...a green that came straight for the boys! He hissed in sympathy when the dragon from the Sweetheart egg got someone a good scratch on the arm. It didn't look too bad, though. The other boy would be fine, he was sure. It could have been worse!

"Oh, heavens.."
That was the only thing that went through the girl's mind as she watched the newborn green flip onto her feet to stretch herself out. Well, it must be wonderful to leave that egg to stand on one's own two -well, in this case, four- feet for once, having the room to stretch! She watched with bated breath as she finally chose a path and, to the astonishment of many of the Candidates, she trilled and tore off for the throng of male people standing on the sands.

A collective gasp was drawn as the poor thing seemed to fall, and as she did, a single claw raked across the arm of one of the men that Amoreth herself had seen before only once.
"Well, that's first blood," came the words in her mind, accompanied by a deep breath. "Thank goodness it was only his arm, though.. that scratch looks terrible."
The Dragon, to her, seemed almost apologetic. Surely, she hadn't meant to do that to the man! He seemed none too pleased with it either, though as he checked the scratch, the air around them seemed to calm slightly. Not too deep or too bad. Amoreth knew that anyone could've leapt out of the way to dodge the oncoming creature, who was only intent on finding Hers, but in the path of such a thing and with such rising hope.. she couldn't blame him for being rooted to the spot.

Camryn had worked her way right to the front of the group of female Candidates, being so small and thin that she didn't take up much space or attention. One look was sent to Rafferty, watching as always from the stands, and another to her sister Cannan and her mother, who sat with the man she knew to be Avery's father.

The moment the eggs began to crack, though, her pale green eyes were locked onto the sands, taking everything in, non-moving. This was her first Hatching, and therefore, she wanted to see everything.

Arolon was woken up roughly to hear the dragon's call. The eggs hatching! He was late! He rushed to the sands, barely having enough time to slip on the robe. The sands burned at his feet yet he barely acknowledged it so hard was his heart hammering in his chest. No matter how many times hatchlings rejected him he still came to the sands full of hope and excitement.

Some of the eggs had hatched already. "Shards and shells!" He cursed his lateness.

Nadia grinned as she watched the egg move around until a green finally fell out, grinning harder she watched as the hatching landed on her back and looked around as if confused for a few minutes. Digging her feet into the sand, trying to reach the cooler sand underneath the quickly warming top layer, she watched as the green hatching looked around for a few minutes before taking off towards the boys side; wincing she watched as the green landed on one of the candidates. The hatchling wasn’t very big yet but she was still going pretty fast and that had to hurt.

After the bronze had retreated once more into his shell, Uuni passed her companion a smile. If she had too --

She almost jumped out of her skin when Avery's fingers found her wrist, and she found herself leaning a little too close into Kestra's space. Clearing her throat, she gave Avery a sort-of scowl and took in a deep breath.

"Don't do that," she whispered quietly, but followed the girl's gaze up towards the stands. To be completely truthul, she'd never met Avery's father before, and she intended to keep it that way.

Swallowing down the bile in her throat, she watched the green with expectant eyes. She'd liked that egg, but the dragon in it seemed a bit disoriented. Thank goodness it had decided to rush the boys instead of this side. She wasn't sure if she could take another mauling session.

She didn't think Avery's clothes would want to take one, either. "Think she's going to Impress to a boy, or is she trying to trick us?" Uuni asked the two girl's, her voice still as quiet as she could manage it. Talking, shards, breathing, felt a bit of a mood-breaker.

So why was she insisting on talking so much?
PostPosted: Fri Oct 09, 2009 1:10 pm

"Ooh, someone's nervous." Avery's voice was surprisingly playful for the situation [perhaps a defense mechanism against the fact that both she and Uuni had been standing for turns without Impressing], and she raised her brows, evaluating the green.

"I doubt she's trying to trick anyone, the sweet thing. She's probably just confused." Avery, herself, didn't think she was one to be sharing her mind with another female, but the green was cute. Not very elegant, but well-intentioned, clearly.

Jarvi, thin as he was, was smart enough to get far away the moment the green headed their direction with any sort of speed. This was his first time, and he was wary of such clumsy, strong creatures.

A cute little green had impressed, though not before mauling her bonded a little. What was a little blood between lifemates? It would be forgiven and then they would pair for life. He cheered his congratulations to the one who impressed even as he felt a bit of jealousy. He held his infinite patience. He would impress someday! Maybe even today...

Sunrise had hatched into a bronze like he expected. He did nothing for now, he remembered their quiet meeting. He liked that the dragon had patience too, he was making sure to pick his carefully, a wise choice. Maybe a bit of nervousness too? He was momentarily surprised, bronze were usually not timid. He needed a confident rider prehaps!

With a final look of apology to the boy she had harmed, the green carried on. She felt bad, but she had to find Hers no matter what! The next candidate she bumped headfirst into was Belram, but no harm was done, except for maybe knocking him over.

Whoops! The green crooned at him, as if saying sorry. After that, she stared at him a moment, possibly debating with herself about choosing him. Many observers began to cheer, convinced that the green had in fact Impressed to this boy, but it was not meant to be.

She moved away from him and fluttered her wings in a cheerful sort of frustration only a character like her could pull off.

Kestra was distracted from following the little green’s path by Avery’s arrival, and she took a couple of quick steps away so she had some space again. But her smile and curious gaze at Uuni and Avery was certainly welcoming enough. Another girl she didn’t know so well, my my…she really had to get out the Lower Caverns and meet some new people more often! She was clearly missing out.

But back to the dragonets.

“She seems to think Hers is over with the boys. Headed on over there pretty fast anyway...there! I think he's name is Raysan?” She almost felt like cheering, seeing the impression.

Whoa! A headfirst bump from the excited green and Belram was on on his a** in the sand - and it was hot! But he didn't mind, really, and offered the apologetic dragonet a reassuring smile. It wasn't like it hurt, or like she meant it...and for a moment, like the crowd, he thought this one might be his; but he didn't mind when she moved on, either. She would find Hers, and his dragon would find him, eventually, if he was to have one. He could wait.

Belram stood back up, brushing off his robes, to watch the green make her decision. Raysan! Huh. Interesting.

The cracking of eggs drew Gylren out of his thoughts. He should've been paying more attention anyway, but he hadn't gotten much sleep last night, and was kind of tired still. A Bronze emerged first, followed by a lovely Green who Impressed to--hey, that was that one kid from the Weyrbowl that one time! Gyl smiled and nodded his congratulations to the newly-formed pair, his eyes inadvertently wandering over to the Bronze who still had not found His yet. He really was a pretty dragon, and Gyl wondered who would be so lucky as to be His.
