Lydia nodded, smiling as casually as she could. "Now it is, then." She bowed a bit, blinking her eyes rapidly to keep them from getting red as she headed out the door and down the hall. Hopefully Rory wouldn't mind if she was his drinking buddy for the day, even if she wouldn't be doing much drinking.

Rory flopped on the bed with Ki Du, stretched out so the puppy could lay against him, stroking the little dog's fur. After a few moments, he dozed off again.

After a couple of minutes, Lydia was back, supplies gone, hands cleaned, and a six-pack in hand. She wasn't sure if this would be enough, but she figured she could always go back downstairs to fetch more if it wasn't. Knocking on Rory's door with her free hand, Lydia kept herself from just walking in, now that she was sure he was awake.

Rory mumbled out a sleepy, "Come in." He managed to sit up a bit again, rubbing at his eyes.

Lydia pushed open the door, stepping inside and holding up the beer. She cocked an eyebrow at seeing that he was already sleepy again. "It's not that early, you know..." She laughed lightly, walking to the boy's bedside, not sure where to put the six-pack.

"Blame Lee fae keepin' me up then," Rory chuckled, holding a hand out for one of the beers. "You can set them down there on the nightstand."

Lydia hid her disgusted expression as she tugged at one of the cans, trying to pull one away with much effort. Eventually able to hand the boy a beer, the girl set the rest down, fidgeting a bit before asking, "May I sit with you?"

"Aye," Rory answered, opening the beer and taking a long swallow. He gestured to the rest of the six-pack. "Help yourself, too." He rested back against his pillows, taking another drink, his other hand idling petting the snoozing puppy at his side.

Lydia took it upon herself to sit on the bed with Rory, though wasn't about to make herself comfortable by any means. Not yet, at least. "I'm not much of a drinker, really..." She played with the ends of her dress, trying to think of a topic to talk about, but couldn't think of anything but Lee and Rory together. "The lady of the house hasn't been complaining about you as much recently. That's good, yes?" She smiled back at the boy before looking back down at her knees. Hm. Perhaps she should have left him to his drinking and come back later. "Are you enjoying yourself here?"

"I think Mrs. Katan's happy I'll work her horses fae her," Rory said between swallows. "I'm doin' alreet here. I miss th' carnival an' me family, but it's been a nice break so far." He finished off the first beer and helped himself to a second. "How d'you get in t' this line o' work, anyway? Didja wake up as a girl an' think t' yourself, 'now, self, I'm gonna grow up t' be a maid.' or is it one o' them jobs you figure you'll only do fae a little bit an' then you realize it's been five years?"

Lydia's posture straightened further, and she kept her eyes glued to the wall ahead of her. She was surprised he'd gone through the first beer so quickly, though decided to answer his question, as badly as she didn't want to. "My family has worked for the Katans for a long while now, so it was just expected that I would, too. But it's nice work, better than it might seem. We get to live here, for starters, and we get paid a decent amount. I don't really have the training or the education to do anything that would pay any better." Sure, it wasn't great being ordered around and looked at as below just about every other living creature around, but there was worse.

Rory shrugged. "You donnae know till you try. My family weren't always horse trainers. W' had t' learn some time. I think a body can learn whate'er they want, so long as they're willin'. Hell, they can prolly accomplish anythin' they want an' get whate'er they want, as long as they ne'er gi' up on themselves an' always try." He grinned at her. "But workin' here prolly ain't so bad either."

Lydia glanced back at Rory, fidgeting like crazy now. He'd just said she could get anything she wanted if she tried hard enough. She could get him. Biting her lip, she turned so she was facing him as she spoke, pretending to be talking about the same thing he was. "What if the position I want is already filled? And will soon never be open again?"

"Well, there's always hope tha' th' position will open again somewheres else," Rory said, taking a drink of his beer. "I usually find tha' where a door closes, a window opens."

Lydia looked down at the bed, sighing lightly. "If we're speaking in metaphors, you could say that I seem to be in a wheelchair, and my only option is the door." She didn't get out. She couldn't, really. Who she met here were the only people she'd get to know, and it didn't help that she rather disliked most of the other servants.
