"Seein' as w'll be family, I donnae think Da will mind gi'n you a Vanner or two if you wanna breed them, so long as you treat them good. W'd hae t' ask Keagan, but he's practically Lee's da at Farstep. He might be alreet wi' it, too," Rory said, scratching his cheek in thought. "You sure you donnae want a Shire, too? They make fae good stable buddies an' they're good fae haulin' things around. W' use th' Vanners fae our vardos an' all, but th' Shires pull th' rides an' cargo. A few o' them pull th' bigger homes, too." He moved to look back out at the horse again. "Wish w' could afford one like tha', though. E'en if w' couldnae breed it t' another fae purity, just haen some o' tha' blood in th' mix would do some wonders fae th' tricks in th' horse shows."

"I'll pay, like any respectable person would." She patted at her hair, knowing money wasn't the issue here. "And they'll be as spoiled as every horse here. They're all in excellent health -- you can take a look for yourself if you'd like." How they were treated wasn't an issue, either. As for the Shire... "I'm not sure we'll be needing a Shire just yet. We don't exactly have a lot of 'cargo' to haul around." Thanks, but no thanks. She admired Snowflake with Rory, smiling softly, hoping the boy envied her horse as much as she expected him to. "If you ever happen upon a male, let me know. I might be able to help out with the costs..." She actually hoped they'd find a Lipizzaner, just so she'd be able to breed the two.

"Donnae really get around where I can hear about other breeds much," Rory admitted. "I ne'er e'en heard o' th' kind your Snowflake is before t'day." He looked back at Mrs. Katan. "Shouldnae really spoil your horses. Makes 'em weak. I wouldnae mind seein' your stables, though. I'm interested t' see what breeds you hae here." He started walking back to the barn, pausing a moment. "You know Farstep's Vanners are more expensive than most, reet? Ours are almost always blue-eyed."

Making her way over to the barn with the boy, she didn't bother glaring at him, even though she wanted to. "I meant they're happy. Well cared for." Pft, telling her how to raise her horses... She continued to walk, even after Rory stopped, not bothering to look back at the boy. "I didn't. Even better, though." She was surprised, but very pleased. Paying more meant a better horse, right?

"Well cared fae ain't bad. Do they get exercise an' all tha'?" Rory asked, trotting after the woman. "Are you sure you donnae want me t' just ask fae you t' hae a horse from our stock? Could get you a mare an' let Kettle stud if you wanted t' breed her." He walked alongside her, hands in his pockets. "I know you prolly wonnae consider it, but I wouldnae mind breedin' Kettle t' your Snowflake an' buyin' th' colt t' hae at Farstep."

"I certainly hope so. I'm not paying all these people here to just sit and look at the horses..." She herself didn't ride any of them, but she was confident that, with the trainers and stable hands working them combined with letting them roam from time to time, they were exercised enough. Turning to look back at Rory, she shrugged. "I suppose I'd have to take a look at them myself before I say yes or no. I'll have to take a look at your 'Kettle', too." Perhaps she would consider it, if he happened to have a particularly nice horse. She led the boy to the first horse, a Friesian, and stood with a grin as she looked the beauty over.

"Kettle's a good horse. Donnae let th' name fool you," Rory chuckled stopping beside Mrs. Katan to look up at the horse, mouth opening in awe slightly. "I heard o' these. They're draft horses like wor Vanners, but a wee more nimble." He reached up to pet it, smiling as it lipped at his hand before he stroked the nose and forehead and then the neck. "Beautiful. Utterly beautiful."

She smiled over at the boy, the pride clear in her eyes as nodding in agreement. "He's my favorite, though not my most expensive. He seems to like me better than the others, as well." One of the very few creatures on the planet that she could say such a think about.

"They'd all like you if you let them get t' know you," Rory said quietly, still petting the horse and chuckling softly when it playfully nosed at him. Clearly the boy had a way with animals. He moved his head so he could look at Mrs. Katan over the horse's nose, colorless eyes standing out eerily framed in black from the horse and the boy's own dark hair. "You think it'd be alreet if I could ride a few o' your horses? I wouldnae mind spendin' some time out here wi' them an' your grooms t' see if I can help any while I'm stayin' wi' you an' Mr. Katan." Mostly, he just wanted to ride the horses whose breeds he was so unfamiliar with.

Mrs. Katan looked in Rory's direction, trying to figure out if he'd meant that to be a compliment or just a general statement that horses could like just about anyone. At his question, the woman tensed up, clearly a bit uncomfortable with the idea. She thought it over a minute, eventually shrugging slightly before answering, "I suppose it couldn't do any harm..." Nodding a bit, she had to remind herself that he knew what he was doing. As long as he was actually helping out, she would agree to it.

Rory just grinned at her. "You e'er ride 'em yourself?" He stroked the horse's nose, looking up at it with affection. "They do make good companions, you know. Good exercise, too."

"Not really, no." She was more of an observer than anything, and was content with just admiring the horses. The woman cocked an eyebrow at the boy, knowing he hadn't insinuated she was overweight, but wanted to give him a hard time. "Are you saying I need the exercise?" She looked down at her figure, confident that if she were any thinner she'd be just about dead.

"Nae, not at all," Rory said honestly, not looking at her, his focus on her horse. "You're in great shape. I just wasnae sure if you knew it wis good fae you t' ride th' horses instead o' just look at them."

The woman nodded, even though Rory wasn't looking, and straightened her posture further. "I had Lee take riding lessons for that exact reason, actually -- wanted her to get into shape when she was finally at the age where she'd be looking over potential suitors..." She'd never imagined someone like Rory would be in the running, and Mrs. Katan frowned at the thought. "But she quit after a month or two. Said her legs 'got too tired'. Even then she wasn't a hard worker, even for something like marriage." She sighed softly, looking back at Rory. "I don't know what that carnival did to her. She was never interested in marriage before all this..." Not only Lee's interest in marriage had changed -- nearly everything the woman knew about her daughter had been turned upside down. She went back to admiring the horse, not really wanting to think about how different Lee was now.

"I donnae think it wis Farstep what changed her. She wis on her own there, mostly. Fao gave her a vardo o' her own an' Keagan gave her a job, but e'erthin' else she's had t' work at, e'en her relationship wi' me," Rory said, looking at the woman. "She ne'er had t' do anythin' o' her own before an' when she had t' an' it wis sink or swim, she wanted t' swim. It's not such a bad thin' is it tha' she grew up, yeah?"
