Altar seemed confused, at first, by his question, as if wondering why he gave a damn after having fought with him only mere hours ago. True, they got off to a wrong start but it wasn't exactly the type of situation to be continuing such nonsense. He had already forgotten about the matter and had decided to move on. If he said they were going to get out together, they were going to get out together. Naturally, he needed to know if he was alright.

In his head, he was already planning. It was hard to tell the time of day, if any in such a world but they would need rest at some point, Altar would, undoubtedly. If the creature would let them do such a thing without getting bored was another question entirely.

"If you're feeling faint at all, tell me. It'll be bad to over exert yourself, even I'm feeling a bit off." He had stated before pausing, hesitating to answer the next statement "It's not your fault to begin with, there's nothing to apologize for."

Walking down the hallway was a sickening repetition. The same walls, the same floors, no hallways looked different. Endless. Frightening. Sickening. It was a warped story to say the least.

Too warped.

"Okay.."

The reply lagged again, but this time more from Altar's own state of thought than the hospitality. Even if he hadn't expected the other to just brush it off, he was beginning to get a clearer idea of what the demon was like.

Why would Ink keep a book like this in his library?
Worrying his bottom lip, the man fiddled with his jacket sleeve. It didn't make sense, something so dangerous. Maybe the librarian couldn't get rid of it?

In which case, where did the book come from in the first place?

There was a heavy silence among the trio after that, the hellhound surprisingly quiet despite its size. Altar was almost sure that even the damn dog was lost, because it felt like they had been walking for hours and his legs ached. Despite it all, he said nothing. He was hungry from lack of lunch, but he wasn't really feeling it. If he could have anything in the world at the moment, Altar rather wished to be home.

At last, the hellhound came to a stop, reverting to his humanoid form with little fuss.

The man in its place reached almost seven foot in height, his hair layered and shaggy like the fur of his beast form. An eyepatch was wrapped over his left eye, three thin scars peeking out from beneath. He was well built and proportioned, neither too muscular nor thin. Even as a thing that looked human, the hound emitted a rather forcible aura.

Not at all moving when Altar walked right into him, K turned around slightly before gesturing towards the door he had led them to.

"Through here."
Tone low, less sultry and more of an amused purr.

Altar reeled back, having been lost in his own thoughts. Holding his nose where he had collided face first with the other's broad back, he was about to curse the beast to hell when he realized that that probably wasn't the smartest thing to do.

The mortal stopped, three paces from the door when K spoke. He glanced at Rayne, then the door. From the bottom of his heart, he realized-- if this was it, just a couple hours of walking to get out... It was too damn easy.

But were they just going to walk willingly into a trap, even for that slim chance?

Rayne noticed question in the human's eyes and he didn't blame him. If he didn't know the situation with the book it was be natural to wonder why it's existence was in the seemingly peaceful library of Azrael's.

"He had no choice but to take the book." He began suddenly, not caring if he was being abrupt "Someone gave it to him and he had no choice but to keep it in the library. It would less harm in there than anywhere else. It wasn't always like this, the book. It used to be a harmless children's book with no hidden secrets, it was one of it's kind and in the possession of a wealthy family.

"It was written especially for the young lady of the house, who loved nothing more than fairytales and the like, her favourite being Alice in Wonderland. This book... was based off of it, quite similar but more... pleasant. Then, suddenly, another child was born and she was no longer the focus of the family. Consumed by anger for the child, the little girl felt only envy for her sibling and hatred to her parents. The story she had talks of taking action, rather than just saying it, you do it. Feeling lost and betrayed by her parents, she killed them, even as a child. The blackness of the cover is the staining from being drenched in the family's blood. The book's vengeful soul is that of the young lady. It consumes people because it's bloodlust is uncontrollable. A legend to say the least but it's mostly revered as mere superstition."

The three of them continued on with the walk that seemed to drag on forever with little results. Rayne, much to his dismay, found himself getting used to the cold atmosphere of the book.

They reached a door and the creature took shape of a human and gestured them to a door in a cruel yet amused tone. He hesitated.

He felt Altar's eyes on him and he met his gaze for a moment before reaching for the door and placing his fingers on the handle.

He eyes flickered, he drew in a deep breath, turned the knob and pulled.

The hellhound stepped out of the way then, leaning against the wall as he watched the demon open the door. His voice was impassive, betraying neither glee nor disdain. He merely watched, the large wolf ears twitching every so often.

Altar tucked the story into a hidden part of his mind. He'd think on the matter later, when they were out of this crazy realm.

If he had been more alert, he'd probably wonder how the demon knew his questions.

"Where... are we?"
Stepping through the portal, the mortal looked around with borderline disbelief. Was it real? Were they home?

The smells were the same-- the sound of birds and water. The books...
Altar moved to pick out a few, leafing through them. They were identical to the ones he remembered. Were they really back in Ink's library? All that scare for nothing?

No wait.. Something was wrong.

The mortal stood up, dropping the book from his hand as he looked back. The portal had already sealed behind them, leaving Altar with a deeply unsettled feeling.

Children-- There were no children and the sun was still shining so brightly outside. That was wrong-- There were always the little bastards running around, bothering him and ruining the gentle calm of the library.

Silently, Altar looked imploringly at his companion. Maybe Rayne would know something more that he didn't.

Rayne wrinkled his brow and he felt an unsettling feeling in the pit of his stomach. It wasn't the library but it was good damned copy of it. No, it was different. There were no children, no laughs or anything. Then there was that other scent... a different smell that was mixed faintly in to the familiar one the two of them knew.

He didn't answer Altar at first, or even look at him. He walked towards the center a bit and then paused. Something was definitely not right. there was a scent that shouldn't have been there. Like how the children were supposed to be around another anomaly that would not have been there was apparent and he took a few steps forward.

"It smells like blood." He said before turning around and standing by Altar "Things are going to start getting troublesome from here. We'll be safe in the hallways but not in the rooms. Right now, we're in one of them and we'll have to find our way out." He paused for a moment then said "Only this is a clever copy of the library so there will be just as many doors as there were in the other, I'm assuming. The next door might be hard to find.

"Then.... there's the issue of the smell. We'll need to stick close. So, don't run off anywhere alon-"

"FE FI FO FUM. I smell human and demon blood." A child's voice said, ringing unpleasantly throughout the building. It contrasted greatly against the peaceful sounds of the library, making the room seem to shake mysteriously like white noise.

Then suddenly, the room became dark and the sun that shone above was replaced by the red face of the moon and it was like the place had suddenly changed completely. Books littered the floor, tapestries that hung were torn and the faint smell of blood became heavy.

There was the sound of children laughing, almost maniacally.

"Hide and seek, hide and seek, around each corners, we'll give a peek.
Run and hide, run and hide, find the door to the other side.
The night time we play, the day we sleep, so in our time, you best keep
That heart of yours still beating sweetly or we'll rip it out so very neatly."

They chanted and Rayne shivered.

"Tick tock tick. Tick tick tock. You have half and hour before we search and devour."

"Oh ********>
PostPosted: Sun Sep 20, 2009 3:54 pm

"What smel--"

The man was interrupted by the mysterious voice. Except unlike the voice in the labyrinth, this voice was malicious in intent, sending tendrils of fear to his core.

Altar turned on one heel to look at who the voice's owner might be, but the next second he was rooted to the spot. One minute he was very clearly standing in Ink's library-- or at least as Rayne said, a damn good copy of it-- and the next the place was decorated like some bizarre Halloween trick house.

Breaking out in cold sweat, a shudder worked its way down his body. He was frozen in fear, mind blanking as the chime of the chant resonated through the library, echoing off the walls and amplifying the volume.

But fear wasn't enough to keep him still when the primal instinct to survive kicked in.

Altar felt himself sinking-- No wait, that wasn't right. Peering down, the man almost fainted at the sight. Beneath him, something that looked like blood oozed where he stood. As he took a step back more out of disbelief than any real reaction, it was evident that the ground was working like some sponge. The floor had changed in both colour and texture, like living flesh.

He was really glad he had nothing to retch up.

"R-Rayne... Floor--... Second floor."
That was where all the rooms were, if he remembered correctly. There were only so many rooms he could remember on the ground flight they were on now. There was a storage and a bathroom, but that was all. The demon probably knew already, though. So this information was useless.

Altar was forcing his mind to blank, but the feeling beneath his shoes and the disgusting sounds made him sick. The increasing smell was hardly helping. He was surprised he hadn't passed out from sheer shock yet. It was amazing, this mortal body. But at the moment, Altar really wished it wasn't so amazing.

But as amazing as it were, it seemed like his mind only worked enough to think on useless things. He couldn't seem to figure out how his legs were supposed to move.

After what seemed like forever, in which reality was probably several seconds, Altar managed to force his body into motion. He was white as a sheet, but as the made made his way up the stairs, he was already trying to think of the fastest way to search all the doors.

But how did they know which one was the correct one?

The floor felt wet and squished sickly beneath his feet. His eyes flared and his instincts seem to switch on automatically. His canines bit into the flesh of his lips as he thought for a moment.

He looked over at Altar who seemed paralyzed with fear and who could blame him, even Rayne's pulse was pounding a bit.

"Come on, we need to move faster before they start moving." He said, his voice growling a bit, his demonic nature showing up a bit and his eyes seemed to almost burn. "Don't listen the sounds here, just pay attention to the task at hand." He said, grabbing the man's hand and yanking as he began to run. "Go at a walking pace, we'll only waste time just getting there and then we won't have enough time finding the door."

He made quick work of guiding the two of them there, seeing as Altar was much too disorientated to possibly find his way around. Much less think straight as he proved by telling him information he already knew being the librarian's assistant.

They reached the place in good time, a hallway decorated with doors. The fast sound of splashing from running seemed to seep in now due to the moist feel of his shoes. He didn't look down and stared straight forward. The walls were stained, oozing with red and the stench was heavier than ever.

"Let's start. Quickly, let's open the doors, the other side should look like the hallway we were just in. I'll take the right, you take the left. Be quick so we can eliminate this floor if it's not here."
PostPosted: Sun Sep 20, 2009 4:37 pm

Yeah, that made sense. He had concluded that a while ago but Altar, despite who his companion was, loathed to break the point of contact. He hadn't altogether noticed when Rayne began to guide him but when he let go, the man was left disoriented.

Recovering quickly as another shudder raced through his body, Altar clenched his hand and gritted his teeth, regulating his breathing despite his pounding heart. Alright, fine, they just had to find the door, right?

With some difficulty, he made his way to the left side of the hall. Having had the greatest difficulty opening the first door, the mortal was expecting something ghastly to jump out at any turn. The feel of the brass handles was sticky-- Altar really didn't want to know what it was. As the door opened an inch and the inside merely looked like an empty room, the man closed it quickly and continued on.

It took twenty minutes for the entire hall to be covered, by the sheer number of doors there were. Ten minutes left, if Altar's watch had any say about it. As he closed the last door, the heir moved back to the right side of the hall. It didn't seem like the demon had much luck, either.

"There's still the entire third floor left... and we didn't check the two doors downstairs." Back on the first floor.

The idea of returning downstairs terrified him. Somewhere in his gut feeling, Altar sensed that that was where the nightmare would start the moment their time was up.

"We have nine minutes."

Each door was a failure, none of them lead back to the hallway. He could deal with the little cretins if they came but he wasn't really willing to see what they were capable of. He was one of the best back home but his powers were a bit restrained being under Azrael's control.

"Come on, first floor, then." He dragged Altar to the balcony and looked down before looking back at the human. He gave him a sympathetic look "Sorry about this." He said before heaving the young man over his shoulder like it was nothing and jumping over the railing and down to the first floor.

The landing came with a great thud that seemed to make the carpet ripple. The blood-soaked carpet splashed violently with the collision and he put the human down.

Rayne made his way over to the nearest door, only a few steps away from where they were. No. That wasn't it. The door next to it. No.

s**t.

Wait, there was one door he could think of.

"Azrael's room. It's on this floor but a ways away, we might not make it before they start looking." Rayne took Altar's hand again "Let's go."

Rayne bolted down an alleyway of bookshelves. He dodged and weaved through each section expertly. If he could go faster, he wouldn't even be making noise on the carpet.

His heart pounded, they were close, about five minutes away from it and they'd be saf-

"TIME'S UP."

His heart sank.
PostPosted: Sun Sep 20, 2009 5:16 pm

Altar had tensed almost painfully when he was picked up, but that was nothing to the sheer disgust that ripped its way up his body when they landed. He could feel the flicks of blood, hear the squelch of it and saw the ripple that oozed more of the off putting liquid.

When he was set down, the man had a hell of a hard time following the demon. Even on normal grounds, the other would be fast, but on the blood soaked floor, slippery and slick, it was near impossible. Thinking fast, Altar opted for another way-- he leaned his weight forward, regaining his balance and instead went sliding rather than running. A lot more effective, and he almost beat Rayne to the doors several times.

His mind had started to clear, even as panic rose with each dead end. But when the two words boomed through the room, he nearly drowned in despair.

With some effort, Altar struggled to keep himself from blacking out.

"Lead the way. Hurry."
He didn't know where Azrael's room was, that was evident from the urgency of his tone. Altar was beginning to grow tired of being scared witless. They may as well risk it and find a way out given that there was nothing more to do. ******** if they do, ******** if they don't.

He only hoped that Rayne's guess was correct. If not, the entire third floor above....

There would most definitely be no time.

There was the sound of little feet and not in the way that Rayne remembered. He could feel blood thristy intent radiating throughout the whole building, they knew where they were. Thankfully, none of them seemed to be on the first floor yet. They were catching up pretty damned fast, though, to the point they were almost animalistic.

The two of them were nearing the door but the demon could feel a pack of children right no their tail, getting closer and closer. He didn't look, it would only hinder their movements.

He pulled them to make a turn and at the end of a row of book shelves as a gold ornamented door, grand and clear, contrasting greatly with the rest of the building. It had to be it.

He picked up his speed has they neared the door and suddenly two children left from the bookshelves, blocking their way. They looked like the children back home only different, more grotesque. Then, like some rip-off from a bad horror film, they changed physically into something larger and dismembered, as if they were torn apart and sewn back together again. He had seen things like this before. Low-class demons.

His eyes flared and he barred his teeth, his canines sticking out almost like fangs, his hair floating ever so slightly as if standing on end. "OUT OF MY WAY." He said, his voice booming loudly as he lunged forward and threw one aside with the simple smack of his arm. He roared and took the other one quickly before another movement was made. The next thing that happened was the body being tossed aside, burning and ripped in half.

Rayne took Altar's hand and opened the door. This was it.

He pulled them in as his heart pounded in the beat of the many tiny feet pattering behind them.

He shut the door behind them and sighed.

He never expected to be so happy to see the endless corridor again.
PostPosted: Sun Sep 20, 2009 5:59 pm

There was something to be said when one didn't like little kids. There was something much different to be said if one ever tried to tell anyone that he had been chased by a pack of blood thirsty, demonic children from hell.

When Rayne attacked, Altar had slipped. Rather unmanly, but could one blame him? It also managed to save his a**, as the child that attacked from behind was essentially shredded by the demon.

Upon later reflection, the mortal would shudder and hope never again to get on the demon's bad side. But hoping was often very different from reality.

From the moment he hit the ground to the second the door closed and they were back in the almost welcoming darkness of the labyrinth, Altar's mind and vision had blanked. Terror seized his mortal mind, locking his limbs. Even if he had been able to flee on instinct, he was already pulled through by his demon companion.

Well, ********. He definitely was more hinder than help.

"....."

Behind the golden doors, Altar sank to his knees. Blood rushed through his body, the pounding of his heart deafeningly loud in the quiet of the corridor as it began to function again. A few paces down, the hellhound looked up from preening himself. The next second, he was in his human form.

"Welcome back. So nice to see you two alive. Did you have fun?"
That voice again. Not the beast's voice, but most likely his master's. It resonated from deep within the walls this time, light and care free. Amused. It had been the voice's idea after all, that nightmare.

If Altar ever got the chance, he would throttle the thing to death and subject it to the most impossibly creative torture he could think of.
... Whenever his limbs regained strength.

"Oh dear... You're all covered in blood. That's not good, that'll attract the wild beasts to you. I think you should get moving before that happens."

Usually, Rayne was quite fond of children, but, ankle biters who evolved into human eaters did not fit into the same category. Right at that moment, he had lost a little love for kids and had figured that he might just be a bit traumatized by the whole experience due to the fact he lived in the library.

When they reached the other side of the door, he felt his back slide against the wall where the door used to be. He sighed and looked over at Altar who had an expression of terror on his face, as if he was ready to keel over and die on the spot.

The human seemed a bit distraught and Rayne had figured it was due to the fact that they almost got eaten by a pack of children. Who could blame the guy? It was like a nightmare come true, only worse. t was an unfortunate thing, to be caught up in such a story. The two of them undoubtedly had shitty luck.

The demon looked up as he listened to the sound of an annoyingly familiar voice and he scowled despite his fatigue. He was already tired and it was only the first door. God damn it.

"Lots of fun. You should have been there." He wanted to say but decided against it, for all he knew it could have lead him into a world of trouble if he wasn't already in it. He picked himself up slowly and stood over Altar "We need to get moving, are you alright? Do you want me to help you up?" He asked, sounding genuinely concerned.

He felt bad for the human, honestly, the poor boy looked terrified out of his wits.

"We need to go now, I can carry you if you need the rest." He suggested as he stood by him. Hopefully he would have enough energy for the rest of the feat.
PostPosted: Sun Sep 20, 2009 6:53 pm

Pride was one thing Altar had too much of. Whether this was a good thing or a bad thing really depended on circumstance. More often than not, it was really a bad thing.

Rayne's words actually stung, even if the demon clearly didn't mean it. It was kind of confusing, how kind the other could be and how fiercely he was reacting in protest of it.

"I'm... Fine."
The words came slowly, shaken and barely above a whisper. Coughing twice to clear his throat, Altar licked his dry lips and forced himself to stand. Failing once, he managed to his knees, then his feet the second time. His legs shook, but after the second step, the mortal seemed to have remastered his body and calmed it considerably. The heir really wasn't sure how much more of this he could take and from the looks of things, this was only the beginning.

It probably hadn't fully sunken in just how much s**t he had got himself into when they were in the labyrinth earlier. Sure, the hellhound had been there but he hadn't attacked. Frightening, but nothing more. It was only after their entire misadventure inside and a prolonged dance with Death that the feeling sunk in with all its weight. He was in deep trouble, powerless, useless, and dependant on a demon. Nothing was stable anymore and if there was one thing Altar hated, it was instability.

"Let's go, then."
The heir trailed off, his words hanging in the air more for himself than anyone else. As the hellhound began to lead once more, the man shuddered and followed. He had to be crazy-- or well, crazier than he had been-- to still be following something that had already lead them into danger once. Maybe they were better off just going on their own.

But that wasn't an option. The only thing Altar was aware of was that he had to follow Rayne-- as much as he hated the idea of it. Follow and stick to him, and hopefully not be too much of a nuisance. He wished he hadn't been born so plain and normal. Or at least been given a gun. He was quite a good shot, and it would have been comfort even if the bullets didn't exactly kill the walking undead.

"Are you hungry? I think you are."
If the voice was hinting at something, it was lost to Altar. There was nothing more after that, just silence until they reached the next door.

If he were honest with himself, the heir would admit that he was exhausted, drained mentally and physically. He just wanted to lie down and sleep, preferably never get up and never experience another nightmare like the one he had just survived. Altar didn't want to walk anymore, but putting one foot in front of the other, he somehow sustained himself until the beast stopped moving.

It must have been a full day already, from how dead he felt.

K glanced back as Altar leaned against the wall. Without much interest, he opened the door.

From what the mortal could see, whatever was beyond the rectangle frame didn't look intimidating. Blue skies, a shining lake, and a small cottage. It was quaint and inviting-- picture perfect. The scent was nice and clean as well, a heavy fragrance indicating that food was somewhere close by. It made his stomach growl.

Altar wasn't stupid. That was how the library had looked at first, too.

"Ah..." Rayne said before backing off "If you say so." He stepped away from Altar and went to follow the beast. He kept aware, though, as Altar slowly regained his balance and began to walk again. He didn't want to seem rude but if they had to go running from something again, he wasn't sure if the human would be able to take it. It was a hard feat, that one room, and he wish he could better protect him.

It was against his usual self to be sympathetic to mortals or sympathetic at all but that had always been his one major flaw as a noble. He hid it will, his kinder side and he was raised not to have it. However, it hadn't stopped him from developing that extra and supposedly unnecessary side of himself.

He pitied Altar, he wasn't used to such things. In fact, not even a day ago, he had discovered the existence of demons through meeting Rayne. Now he was thrown into the pit.

He figured the human felt his pride a bit struck with having to depend on a demon he hardly knew and pretty much defended him. It wasn't like Altar would have been able to do anything without a weapon, though, in all honesty.

The group arrived at the door and this time, he wasn't the one to open it. Altar had taken initiative, revealing a beautiful place with a hidden dark side. They both knew it from the last room. Nothing was as it seemed.

"C'mon. We should start." He said as he took a step forward, his mind running wildly.
