I could never get into buying one of those premade tails or ear sets you see at cons, I just found them so...FAKE looking. So when my ex and I had a request to make a few sets of cat ears of varying sizes I wondered if I could find the right kind of fur to match my fursion. So I hunted JoAnnes for about a month and then when I found the perfect wolf black we spent the next week designing and sewing the shape, length, and thickness of the tail.
Anywho, First time I wore it outside I think was to walmart, and I happened to be wearing my spike collar so it worked out grand. Got a lot of stares, and a few mothers shunned thier kids, its was funny. A few ppl more towards my age(20) giggle snorted and pointed, to which i promptly walked up to them gave a gutteral bark and walked off. My ex loved it. =)
Sadly, she wasn't nearly as approving as my fursona as my current mate, and I had to primarily stay a closet furr. Whenever I perform on stage tho (I'm trying to get in a band as a rythem guitarist) I have every intent to wear my tail at all times, and I've even attached wolf ears to a second black fedora I own. I wear a fedora everywhere, so its only fitting I could find a way to put ears on one =)

@Avery, Well that depends on were you buy the ears and tail. There are some very good sites out there that you can buy from (but they coast an arm and a leg).
Walmart? NIIIIICE! Mothers shunning there children? Sounds like my kinda evening. x'3 As far as the "closet fur" thing runs I'm facing a similar problem. I'm considering making a thread on the subject. Think it would be a good idea?

Sounds like a great idea to me, its really hard to get ppl to be accepting, or even to get the courage to show a little bit of our sides. Hell, my best friend in the whole world only recently found out how serious I am about it, he thought I was always just a Neko-nerd, not that there's anything wrong with them.

I slowly fed him things. itll help if ya start with somethin like drawing of you two hangin out and you give yourself ears or a tail. or maybe just wear something once to test the waters. nothin big, just an ice breaker.

@Nekita: Actually, I know a few people with Fursonas, but they don't really show it aside from their nicknames. One girl I'm friends with is nicknamed "Weasel" and another one is nicknamed "Mongoose". And everyone says I look like a raccoon in rl ((bc my hair and eyes are dark and my hair is kinda wild and flips out like fur sometimes XD)), so they sometimes call me "'Coon". Oh, and related to the whole public furry thing: I saw some guy about 20 maybe at the mall with a pair of leopard ears and a tail! It was awesome! I wanted to get my picture taken with him! XD But, I was with my friend's strict mom, so that wasn't really an option. D: I still gave him a thumbs-up though! >:3
