Yeah, I don't think Johnathan Larson would have been too incredibly happy with the movie, them segmenting it up the way they did.
I actually got into a huge argument today with a girl who thought that Idina Menzel's performance was "perfect". Yeah, she can act, which is a lot more than I can say for some broadway actors, (especially the ones Cinci Conservatory spits out) but perfect is so strong a word. She is Maureen, no question, but she sounded, I don't know....a little sick, maybe? Like she had a cold.
I've never seen Alphabet City, so I wouldn't know what it was like in the late 80's. I know New York tried despirately to clean up the reputation of some of the shadier districts and it worked pretty well, but I don't know just how shady they were.
On the other hand, Anthony Rapp was quite ingenious, along with the rest of the cast. I loved his performance especially, though, little things he threw in to make a scene more comical or awkward. Let's just face it, he's got a beautiful body. (Shut up, Lovey! He's gay and you know it!)
Anybody have an opinion on Rosario Dawson?

What people for some reason, don't know, is that the way Menzel sings is so bad (Technique wise) that she has a horrble history of getting nodes. She didn't have a cold. Her voice is getting thinner and thinner permanently because of the abuse to her vocal chords. Plus her high notes are totally gone now. sad_loved_girl Anybody have an opinion on Rosario Dawson? I thought she was fine. She seemed like a 19 year old girl. The junkie thing, however, I didn't buy, at times. Although I think she did a very good job. Her voice was almost totally computerized though and you could tell everytime she would move quickly from note to note.

sad_loved_girl Anybody have an opinion on Rosario Dawson? Ehh, she was alright. Not the fondest of her though. Other people could have done the singing a million times better, but Rosario's acting was pretty fair. I didn't like her, but I didn't hate her. For me... Jesse, Anthony, and Wilson WERE the whole movie. They could have gotten anyone else to play the rest of the cast really. I mean, I love Adam Pascal to death, but there was something about his acting that I did not like. He had the most boring facial expressions I have EVER seen. Hehe.

After seeing the movie, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. One thing that bigged me incredibly so is that Columbus does too much "dramatic" lighting. It was okay in the ending scene where Adam's face is half in darkness while he sings, but for some reason in scenes that need no darkness at all (Out Tonight, for instance) he has Mimi in complete darkness. I couldn't see her face when it's supposed to be a light song. What was up with that? I also think that the Mark/Rodger confrontation should have been left in to make What You Own that much more powerful. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Ok, I've been reading through most of these opinions and I suppose I should put mine up as well.
So, I went and saw it last Friday when I was in NJ and suprisingly the auditorium wasn't that crowded. I have not seen Rent on stage and I'm not a Renthead so I was open to whatever it had. I thought it was a great movie with a couple of cheezy parts like at the AIDS meeting and one guy gets up to sing and then they all get up to sing. It reminds me of a Dr. Seuss movie. No offense. I love the Bohemian song (sorry I can't remember the name) and I'll Cover You. The actors did a good job. The one thing that I'm proud to know is that most of them are from the original broadway. I think . . . In fact, I loved the I'll Cover You song so much that I was dancing out of the auditorium to it at the end. I adore the Tango scene and it was so lovely.
SOmething that was funny though, before the movie started I noticed a couple of older people come in and about the time of or after Collins and Angel kiss . . . they left! Homophobs . . . My dad made a funny face at that part too. He's a homophob too . . . but I digress!
All in all I though it was great!

I agree with you on the not buying the whole junkie thing-- she looked wayyyy too pure/healthy/whatever to be a junkie. I've seen a fair amount of those in my life, and trust me when I say they look BAD.
I didn't like how Rosario did the last section of "Out Tonight," because some parts seemed rushed and a bit computerized. Still...in "Another Day," it sounded like it was all her. I don't know what you mean by "moving quickly from note to note" because if you've attempted to sing like that, it's not too difficult.
Her voice was smoother than Daphne Rubin-Vega's, but I hated how she stressed the "r's" in certain words. It was a minor annoyance, though, in the grand scheme of things.

It may not be difficult for you, but for her it most likely was. Maybe she kept going flat or sharp. Whatever it was hey fixed it.

I had no idea Idina Menzel was in rent. Not having seen the movie yet, what part does she play? I know that she plays Elphaba in Wicked, which I was lucky enough to see her in.

Did you notice how the part where she goes "When the Spanish babies cry" got kind of slurred together on the last three words? I thought that was weird...probably bad editing or something.

For me being a Renthead, I thought it was okay, but not wonderful. In my opinion, they did a good job of transferring it. But the fact that there were two new cast memebers made it weakish, although I do think that Rasario has a beautiful voice. But I hated that they left out songs (I can't help it, I LOVE the voicemails because they just seem to add something, and all of the other cut songs) And the fact that Benny HAS a wife was completely left out....whatever that was about. There were a few little things like that left out that sorta bugged me, but whatever, I still liked it and would enjoy seeing it again.
