"Well...its a new place so..." Mattie chuckled nervously. "Is anyone in here?" she asked, entering in after her father and looking around the roomy tavern.
"That's a wonderful seat Papa! Our food will come faster!" she said, sitting down excitedly continuing to look around with interest.

The kitchen door opened, a young woman with a bright smile out to greet the customers, "Hello, wel-- Oh Aubrey! What are you doing back here?" Aimee asked, walking over to him and his guest. "And who's your cute little friend?" she waved to Mattie, pinching her on the cheek gently. "What's your name dear?"

"It's Mattie...." she said, blushing slightly as Aimee pinched her cheek. She had never seen someone so happy and bright before. Maybe...she was...? She looked to her father, thinking then shook her head. No, no. They were working together! That was probably it.

"Oh, the speed of the food depends on what you ortder and who the cook is, not where you sit." He looked up and grinned bashfully. "Well, you see, I found her in the market. She was so cute, I just had to bring her here." He smirked, watching her coo over Mattie. "Mattie, this is Aimee, one of the best servers here. Aimee, this is my daughter." His voice and posture eminated pride over this fact.

Aimee laughed, "Oh Aubrey. You're too funny sometimes." the centauress tilted her head, "Daughter? You had a mate Aubrey? How come we never met her?" she asked, having no idea about his past. She turned to Mattie, "It's wonderful to meet you Mattie. What can I get you? We have a lot of food here."

"Hi Aimee!" Mattie smiled at her politely, "You're awfully pretty." she stayed quiet as Aimee mentioned her mother. She coughed slighly, trying to divert the subject, "I would like...uh...steak! And a baked potato!" she stated the first two things that had come into her mind. Mattie didn't want to talk about her father's past with her mother anymore. She glanced at her father for help.

As proud as he was of Mattie, Aimee's questions made him clear his throat awkwardly. "I don't have a mate, Aimee. Not for a long time now." He gave Aimee a small look, hoping she would let it go for now. Maybe he would explain later. Maybe...
Giving Aimee's arm an 'it's fine' touch, he refocused on Mattie. "A whole steak and a baked potato?" He asked in faux shock. "Oh, I don't know if you could eat all that." He chuckled and nodded. "I suppose I'll have the same. As big a meal as it is, it's too tempting to pass up."

Mattie breathed a sigh of relief, thankful that her father had gone along with it. She smirked, "I can eat more than you Papa!" secretly, she wasn't so sure. She was only good at eating a whole lot of sweets in one sitting, but she couldn't eat a lot of meals.

Aimee gave a small nod in understanding, changing the subject with them. "Two big steaks and two potatoes? Alright you two. I'll get onto that." with a big smile, she walked into the kitchen again, the door swinging behind her.

Giving Aimee's arm a small apprerciative tap, he laughed and shook his head. "I don't know. Maybe you're right. You're a growing young lady still. I'm done." He looked at his abdomen, still flat from all the work he did, gave it a pat and chuckled bashfully. "I don't want to keep growing."

She looked at both Aimee and her father, amazed at their friendliness. Maybe Papa did like her! She was very pretty, and probably a great match for him. If her mother had Riome, why shouldn't her father have Aimee? She would need time to plan this out.
Mattie waved her hand dismissively at her father, "I'm sure you wouldn't gain weight Papa! Your kinda still young right?" she realized it sounded kind of awkward when she said that, because she was much younger than him.

Cocking his head a moment, used to kids calling him old simply because he was an adult, he threw his head back in a hearty laugh. "I suppose, in relation to others on this island, yes, I am young. Ish." He chuckled, brushing his hair back from his face. "Although, the more I watch you grow, the older I feel."

"Then I'll just have to grow slower!" she teased. Mattie's ears flicked happily, enjoying spending time with her father.

The kitchen door swung open as Aimee walked out with two big plates topped with a large portion of steak and an equally large potato to the side. "I hope I didn't keep you two waiting long." She set down both plates, dusting her hands off, "Enjoy! Although I'm not as a great cook as your father Mattie dear." Aimee patted Aubrey's arm, "Although he's a great teacher."

Mattie's mouth dropped open at the sheer amount of food piled onto one plate. Or maybe the plate was extremely big. Picking up her fork and knife, she started to cut into her steak, "Thank you very much Aimee!" she said, smiling up at the older woman, wondering again how she should set up her father and the centauress together. Inviting her to dinner seemed out of the option because she really wanted to spend sometime alone with her father. Taking a bite of the steak and poking at the potato, Mattie watched the both of them, her mind whirring with the possibilities.

Aubrey laughed, ruffling Mattie's hair as the food came out. "Oh boy Mattie, I think that potato is the size of your head." He laughed. "Don't go stuff yourself too much. We've got walking to do today."
He looked up at Aimee and shook his head. "No worries. It smells wonderful. I just hope she doesn't fill herself to bursting. We'll be travelling the town today." His neck warmed when Aimee patted his arm. He'd thought he'd gotten used to Aimee around, but his daughter's attention seemed to make it... off. When he flirted these days, it was just comradre. Ususally. He waved his hand in the air. It was just awkward flirting, even just playfully, with Mattie there. It had to be. "Well, you're a great student. It takes two, you know. One to teach and one to learn."

"For some reason, all the potatoes seem to be really big today." not noticing the slightly awkward aura hanging around in the air. "I'm still practicing your meat pie recipe. My grandmother loves it. I think she wants you to cook for her in person some day." she smiled, before heading back into the kitchen, "I gotta wash the dishes in there, I'll be back in a few."

Mattie took another large bite, nodding to her father. "We can just pack leftovers and finish them when we get home!" she said after she swallowed. She was half tempted to talk with her mouth full, but Aubrey's love interest was here, so she had to put on polite manners to impress her.
She kept eating, until Aimee walked away. With a lowered voice, looking at her father seriously, she asked, "Do you like her Papa?" she leaned closer to him and continued, "She's awfully pretty you know. And I think she likes you too..."

"We could leave the leftovers here too, ask them to put them into the icebox so that it doesn't go bad. It's supposed to be warm today." Aubrey nodded. "Must have been a good season. Ha! She'll have to stop by here soon then. I'd be glad to." He took another bite of steak, giving Aimee a small wave as she left.
At Matilda's observation, Aubrey nearly swalloed his chunk of meat whole, coughing once to keep from choking on it. He chewed quickly, his neck more than just warm now. It was like she had been reading his thoughts.
"Aimee is a good friend. She helped me get this job, and we work together a lot. Nuh- nothing more." He looked down at his plate, busying himself with his potato. He certainly wouldn't complain if more happened, but what was the chance Aimee would be attracted to him?
"You seem to like her though, and I can tell she thinks well of you. Good for a first impression. I bet you two will get along fine." He said encouragingly. He was suspicious of that look in her eyes, and tried to get the focus off of himself.

She squealed, "You do like her!" she grinned widely, "You should ask her out Papa! I'm sure she would love to!" Mattie took a bite of the potato before adding, "After all, my Papa's a pretty good looking guy." she winked, nudging him and taking another bite of the steak. So far, the plan was going well...now if Aimee would agree to it...

Graoning inwardly, Aubrey shook his head. "Yes, as a friend. It can't be more than that." That was an odd way to phrase that. Can't? Why was that again? He shook it off. He had just gotten his daughter, and he was already expected to explain relationships to her? This was mother/daughter type discuss-.... Maybe this was better...
"Besides. She probably has a few dozen guys waiting in line for her hand." Aubrey gave Mattie a slightly disbelieving look and a quick smirk. "All too soon, I'm gonna have to start fighting off all the guys who will be after you when you're all grown."

"But she asked you to meet her grandmother! Doesn't that mean she's interested in you enough for her own grandmother to see you?" Mattie simply shook her head, cutting off another slice for herself, "Nuh-uh. I'm going to live with you for the rest of my life. And Mama too. I'm not interested in boys." she said, dismissing the subject entirely, 'Besides, I think Mama would kill any boys that come near me."

"What're we being so hush-hush about?" Aimee asked, wiping her hands on a towel. She honestly found Aubrey and Mattie too cute. They were so close and happy with each other like all fictional fathers and daughters. She couldn't help but feel a little sad that her father wasn't around for her when she was younger.
Aimee pulled up a chair, sitting by their table. "Is this some secret that I can't know?" she grinned.
