Uuni stopped and looked at Avery with disbelief marring her face. She was waiting for the words that would strike home and inspire something.
"A good friend who gets pissed over two people holding hands?" Her voice was strained and she ground her jaw together.
"Avery, I'm sorry, but. . . whatever was there, she just shattered. Because I actually do care about her, I intend not to see her again. You know what I'm like. If she got jealous over us holding hands, what's she going to do when she catches me in a dark room with some guy?" She clicked her tongue against the top of her mouth and turned her back, starting down the hall.
After a few moments, she turned back around. She didn't even bother to hide the redness in her eyes or the tears that had started to flow. "She couldn't even tell me she was upset. She wouldn't even let you speak. How is that the least bit friendly?"

"I don't think she was jealous, exactly." Avery sighed, running a hand through her curls. "Despite what you may think, I'm not crazy. I've known her for years now, better than most ever will..." Seeing the tears, the bet-taker reached out, finding herself wanting to comfort the other girl.
"I know what you're like, she knows what you're like... What makes you think that stops someone from caring about you? Kess just... She always wants the best. Expects the best. From everyone."
A shrug. "And besides, Kesslan isn't stupid. She doesn't have to see something with her eyes to know it's there." Avery's fingers found Uuni's arm.

'What makes you think that stops someone from caring about you?' Hah. That question. "Experience?" she answered easily. She shook her head at her own sarcasm and took in a deep breath.
The next few lines were much more serious. "There is no best with me. Don't start with your 'of course there is'. There isn't, and Kess should know better than to be looking." What part of 'skank, slut, whore, b***h' did people not seem to understand?
The last line, however, caused her to feel uncomfortable. What was there? Her pretending to be in love? Oh, yeah, great eyes, Kess.
Despite this, she took the step forwards when she felt the fingers on her arm. After that, she took another and buried her head against the girl's neck and wrapped her arms around her waist in an act that could only be seen as clinging for support.
"If she wasn't jealous, what was she?"
And how would Avery react when, well if, she went through with this whole thing? Where were the days of being stress-free that she remembered? Note to self: This was why you didn't make friends.

One hand found Uuni's lower back, holding her close while the other sunk into her long, dark hair. Taking a deep breath, inhaling the scent of her, she shook her head.
"You..." Avery didn't even know what to say. How could someone feel that way about themselves? No wonder Kess had wanted to be her friend. "... You are mistaken if you think you're worth so little."
Silent for another long moment, her voice was a whisper. "There's something deeper here, there always is. I'll speak to Kess tomorrow, but tonight..."
Slight hesitation. "... Shall we head back to my quarters?"

Mistaken? Oh, was she? Nice of the girl that had fallen in love with her to say that. A little biased maybe?
If there was something deeper, Uuni was still upset and aggravated. The fact that Kess couldn't just say what it was broke every confidence she had in the girl. It was a matter of necessity that she could communicate.
She was communicating right now with Avery, and she hated Avery. Well, maybe she hated her slightly less right now as her grip tightened and her eyes closed.
At first she said nothing. Instead, her hold began to loosen and she turned her head away to look out at the wall. A nod eventually broke the silence.
Why not? It would help, certainly. Things couldn't get any worse, right? And, she supposed she was sort of connected to the girl in some way because she'd wept and confessed all over her. There weren't many people in the Weyr that could say they'd seen her cry. There were none that could say they'd been the shoulder she'd taken to.
"You know 'you are mistaken if you think you're worth so little' is just another way of saying 'of course there is', right?" she asked with a somewhat helpless grin. She bumped their shoulders having taken some distance away from the girl at this point.

Avery didn't say anything, just smiled slightly at the bump and steered the girl toward her quarters. It didn't take them much time and they found themselves still alone.
The smile grew as her reached up to begin unlacing her own tunic, eyes on the brunette keeping her company. Interestingly enough, she didn't plan on this being anything more than sleeping. Avery didn't think sex solved everything, unlike the other girl, and she thought they could both just use the comfort.
Like hell she was going to tell Uuni that when inviting her over, though, the girl might've turned her down!

Uuni found her eyes wandering in search of Avery's absent roommate.
Smirking at Avery's smile, she followed Avery's example and began to release the unwanted tightness of her own clothes. She wasn't paying very much attention to what she was doing; she was too busy watching Avery.
It was kind of strange to get undressed first, but Avery was a little strange. Ah well. It couldn't be helped.

The curly-haired girl didn't feel at all self-concious about removing her clothing, beckoning Uuni closer as she blew out the candle in the quarters, shifting onto her cot. It was pretty much agreed upon [except for by Kess, the nice girl] that Avery's body was much, much more attractive than her not-quite-beautiful face. Therefore, she had nothing to hide, nor worry about, other than a few character-providing scars.
"Come here." A murmur, and she was reaching for the other girl. Of course, she just wanted to hold her for awhile. Get some sleep.

There was a brief moment when Uuni debated laughing, putting her clothes back on and simply leaving. It only showed as curiousity in her face when she looked towards Avery.
The moment passed and she fell right into the game. How could she not? The way Avery was asking was almost that of a child. A scared, lonely child.
As careful as could be, Uuni moved into what space that was left on the cot. This was going to take some getting used to. She hated gentle lovers for very important reasons.
The back of her hand moved down Avery's cheek as she finally settled. Lips slightly parted, she let out a purposeful sigh, the hot breath traveling between them. So, so gentle. It was most aggravating to her already stressed nerves.

Avery's body shifted to accomodate Uuni with suprising ease and at the sigh, her raised her gaze to meet the other girl's, voice soft as she closed the distance between them with one of those gentle kisses Uuni 'hated'.
"If you're just going to disappear the second I go to sleep, you can go. It's alright."
A strange sort of smile and she let her eyes close, resting her forehead against the older girl's.

Well, now she couldn't go without looking like an absolute b***h. Nevermind the fact she was one, but she was supposed to be acting like she kind of sort of loved the girl, or that's how it went in her brilliant plan. Her brilliant plan was slowly starting to suck more and more.
The indecision was clear in every aspect of her body language. It was only right to leave now and let Avery have her peace. If she went fast enough, she might catch a few late stragglers and actually catch some relief. She certainly wasn't getting it here with miss cuddleface.
After a long winded discussion with herself that lasted approximately half of a candlemark, Uuni eventually decided she could sacrifice one stupid night for one stupid girl. It could be sort of a parting gift to Kess. 'Hey I didn't abandon your friend even though I could have.' That kind of thing.
Of course, by the time Uuni would have responded as much, Avery was asleep.
Eh. She would find out in the morning. At least someone would be getting sleep. Uuni went to the only thing she knew how to do that didn't involve sex. She counted flits. Really annoying, multi-colored flits with numbers painted on their sides. In her mind, they never did what she wanted them to do. They did not fly to the desired location and curl up and go to sleep. They went every which direction. She spent two candlemarks arguing with the flits of her mind before she eventually succumbed to the lucid state of dreamlike imagination.
What a shitty day.
