The young man noticed Lee's eyes drawn to the money. "Impressed, are we?" He bumped the girl's shoulder with his own. "Are you really interested, girl?" Faolan studied the girl with half-closed eyes, a soft noise rumbling in his chest. "What all would you wanna know?"

"A little, yeah..." Impressed was one word for it; intrigued was another. And more with the process of making money rather than having it. What did she want to know? Well, for starters, "Will I make this much from these?" Lee pointed down at the books in the table. She doubted it. "What jobs around here make the most?"

"You'll do alright workin' for Da on the books," Faolan answered, resting an arm across the back of her chair, fingertips playing a bit with Lee's shoulder. "As for what jobs make the most around here . . . well, girl, let's just say I donnae feel any bit of comfortable puttin' you on a stage to dance or lettin' some man paw at you." He looked down at her. "Still my wife after all, an' I ain't keen on you doin' them sorts of jobs."

Lee got the feeling that the books would give her less than she was looking for, but she wasn't going to say anything. "Okay..." She didn't mean to sound disappointed, and she was actually a bit surprised by it. No, she didn't want to dance on stage, that would have been more than her little heart could take, but to settle for less wasn't fun.
...Oh god. Was she turning into her mother? "Y-you know, it's fine. I don't care about how much I make." She was lying, more to herself than Faolan, but if that's what it took to be less like her mother, then that's what she'd do. Getting ahead, making the most, that peculiar interest in money... where was all this coming from?

"Look, darlin', it's like this," Faolan explained, "you work at somethin' small here first an' if you wanna do more, then we train you up. As petite as you are, you could be fair as a trapeze artist or an acrobat. For now, you'll be doin' the small jobs and gettin' to know how this all works."
He moved around in the chair to face her. "Unless you'd rather go home. I know this be hard on you, love, so if you'd like me to take you home, just say so."

Starting out small -- that was fine. It gave her motivation, which was something she'd always lacked. As for being a trapeze artist... just the thought of it made Lee want to crawl back into the cabinet bed and hide. She'd find something else; something less life threatening.
Faolan's next words nearly made her fall out of her seat. So, he'd picked up on that, huh? I thought this place was home... She didn't want to go back to her parents, or at least, she thought she didn't. She just needed to get used to this place was all. And Ellandra, too. Once everyone got used to all this, it would be alright. "Only if you want me to."

"I want what's best for you, and Elle does, too, lass, but I donnae rightly know if that's bein' here with us," Faolan sighed, giving a small shrug. "Tell you what, since we still got time to suss it all out, here's what I'll do, yeah, I'll go get me ol' vardo and bring it over here and set you and your wee Lauss up in it. That way you have privacy an' Elle has her space. You an' me are still married, but there ain't a crap ton of people livin' on top of each other here. I'll talk to me da later about adoption rights an' get his opinion on the whole situation. He's pretty good on figurin' this stuff out."
He looked over at the girl, tilting his head a little. "Think that'll work for now?"

So she didn't belong with her parents, she didn't belong at the carnival... Where exactly did she belong? Lee nodded her head slowly with a weak smile on her lips. She knew Faolan was trying his best to help, but she couldn't help but feel as if he wanted her gone at this point.
However, talk of her very own vardo was more than enough to brighten her mood, at least for now. "S-seriously?" That was almost the equivalent of having her own home. As in, she'd be living on her own. The thought that she didn't know how to fold laundry or cook didn't enter her mind and ruin the excitement -- all she could think about was how she'd decorate the vardo. That, and knowing Lauss would be much more comfortable with his own space. Lee nodded happily to Faolan, answering his question with a small, "Yep."

"Alright then, lass," Faolan said with a grin. "I'll have you in your own place by the end of the day." He got up, gathering up the money and books. "I'll put this away an' then you an' me can go have a look at the ol' vardo to see how you like it."

"T-today?!" Lee's eyes widened and her jaw dropped as she repeated to herself Oh my god, so cool! Seriously? No way! Her mouth formed a small, girlish smile at the thought. She couldn't quite think of the words to express how grateful she was, and had to settle with, "Thank you so much!" At least her voice held an unusual amount of excitement -- unusual for Lee, anyway. Hopefully Faolan would hurry -- somehow, now that living on her own was so close, she was becoming a bit impatient. What did it look like? Was it the same as this one? Bigger? Smaller? She wanted to know.

Faolan finished putting away the money and books, then headed out the door, motioning for Lee to follow. "We'll get you the ol' vardo--it's a little smaller than my current one--and set you up somewhere far enough away to give you space, but close that you can come visit me or Elle if you want. After tha', I'll talk to Da about the annulment. Things should start getting' back to normal after that." He grinned at the girl. "Normal for Farstep, anyhow."

Practically flying out of her seat, Lee followed just a step behind Faolan, her grin growing wider with each stride. Her smiled never faded, even after Faolan mentioned the annulment. Wait, why was that? Why wasn't that upsetting? He was telling her he didn't want to be married to her, and yet she was still chipper. Was getting her own vardo really that exciting, or were her feelings for Fao just...
Lee shook her head and tried to erase the thought. Perhaps it didn't affect her because she'd still be living close to him. Looking up at him, she confirmed it; he was perfect. Of course she still adored him, as much as she ever did. Silly Lee and her silly thoughts.

Faolan headed across the camps, sidestepping out of the way of other members of the Grady clan or of performers on their way to their shows. Approaching Keagan's vardo, he stepped up and gave a sharp knock to the door, and it was soon answered by his father glaring at him.
"Ah wis haein' me lunch, lad. What d'you need?" the old man asked, folding large arms across a barrel chest.
The younger man grinned. "It's like this, Da, I was thinkin' on gettin' the lass here my ol' vardo t'move into while she lives at the carnival wi' us. Gonna annul the marriage, too. Right now, actually. The didikai see her as an adult, yeah? Should give her some rights while she's wi' us as t'how she's livin' her life."
"It's aboot time, lad," Keagan said, stepping down and looking them both over. "Wondered how long your woman would let this foolishness gae on." He walked over to Lee and took her arm gently, then flicked out a knife and cut the ribbon free. "There, now you ain't beholden to this fool no mores." He stepped over to Fao and did the same. "By all the power invested in me and blah blah blah, you ain't married no more. Now get you both gone so's Ah can finish me lunch." And with that, he disappeared back into the vardo and slammed the door shut.
Faolan looked at Lee. "That actually went a lot better than I thought it would. Let's go get you your new home, lass."

Lee half-hid behind Faolan as Keagan folded his arms in front of her. He was still as intimidating as the first time she saw him. It was difficult to pay attention to what the two were saying when all Lee could think about was how likely it was that Keagan hated her, or if he even remembered she existed.
Lee's eyes widened as the knife was flicked out, and she flinched when the ribbon was cut from her wrist. Oh, so that's what they'd been talking about. Wait, they weren't married anymore? It was that easy?
Would this make Ellandra happy again?
Lee smiled faintly up at Faolan and followed his lead once more. Keagan was just as frightening as ever, but the girl still found it a bit odd that she'd never really had a conversation with her used-to-be father-in-law.

Faolan rested his tattooed arm around the girl's shoulders, walking her over to where his old vardo had been stored. "She ain't much, but she was home t' me for fifteen years." He held up his other hand, showcasing the black-painted vardo with it's silver-inlaid accents and intricate carvings. "I'll have some roustabouts help haul it over to that empty space next to me an' Elle's home. I'll teach you how t' use th' stove an' all, too."
He looked down at her, his left hand giving Lee's shoulder a small squeeze. "Bein' on your own's a big step, even here in the carnival. I cannae keep your parents from comin' here an' I ain't sure the didkai traditions can keep the outsider laws from sayin' your parents can take you back home, but for now, you have your own home an' we'll see t' gettin' you a job as well."
