Embri twitched in her sleep, feathers ruffled as an unhappy moan escaped her lips.

Darkness.
Falling.
Why am I always falling?

Hazy fields of green danced on the edge of her vision, trees seeming to stretch up and away with distorted, bubbled broughs. There were others around her, white phantoms that moved like a school of fish but never drew near enough to resolve clearly. Then one brushed against her side, silky snow white fur and sapphire eyes. Embri's dream-self shivered, fearful and yet unable to move away. They danced in circles, caught up in a complex set of movements. I don't want to be here... but her dream-self continued on, drawing closer and closer to the white stallion, until their shoulders touched, a nose caressed the arch of her neck... then the world twisted again, and the caress turned into teeth biting into her skin, pinned down, a crushing weight across her back-

Embri shrieked and fanned out her wings, buffeting them in the confines of the nest. She awoke, sprawled out on the ground... where...? Dizzily she shook her head. Nest. Home. No strange fields with odd white figures... Embri folded in her wings hastily, still trembling from the nightmare, blood pounding in her ears.

"Ah, I see," Jiyuu whispered back with a small smile. "Well, I could go with you, but-" The stallion's sentence was cut off from the shriek within the tent. Alarmed, he ducked back in to check on things. "Embri, are you alright?" he asked with concern, seeing the creamy mare shaking there.

Chococo was startled out of her own dream by Embri's shriek. The filly had nearly leapt a foot at the sound, and she whirled around to see what was wrong. "Wha...?" Seeing Embri in an apparent state of fright, she looked at her two brothers questioningly to see if they could tell her what had happened.

Kindle's head jerked up at the sound, sleep fading fast from her eyes. She glanced around frantically and let out a frightened whicker as something brushed against her nose. "Chococo?! Balint?!" No, it was... "Embri? Embri, what's happened?" She watched the mare with wide blue eyes, taking in her every action, her ever movement. A bad dream?

Ears pricking, then flattening at the sound, Balint whirled and leapt. And fell flat on his face, hind legs kicking up sand behind him. Loosing a plaintive cry (though nothing more than his pride seemed to be wounded), he pushed himself up and picked his way carefully toward their den.

The mare shook her head, stammering. "it was... nothing... I'm sorry. Just a dream..." She smoothed her feathers with little success, soft coverts puffed out with fear or stress. With one wing she scoops Chococo towards her, nuzzling the little filly. "Didn't mean to scare you, Cho. Was only a night-thought."

Even as she said the words, the mare seemed unsure, as if trying to convince herself of the fact. Her cream ears pinned back against her neck, Embri tucked her nose against the dark brown foal, eyes troubled.

Chococo gave her elder sister a look of concern and worry as Embri nuzzled her, trying to play down what was bothering her. When the mare tucked her nose in against her side, Chococo gave her a comforting lick on the cheek, her eyes still reflecting her worry.

Jiyuu too looked on with concern. As gently as possible, he asked, "What was this dream about?" After all, it usually helped when you told someone of a dream, right? Made it seem less real in a sense. At least for him it did.

About that time, the little runner made his way noiselessly back into the den, munching on some small critter or another. It seemed oblivious to the current atmosphere of the place.

Looks like dad's almost back, Jiyuu thought to himself at the arrival of his pet Norora. He had lent him to the older stallion that morning to help with the patrol, but it seemed that they were now done. That or that the little reptile had left the patrol early in favor of a small hunt, which was also entirely possible.

Kindle looked on worriedly, then grudgingly folded her wings against her back. Perhaps it was almost time to discuss a larger lodging with her mate. They'd only gotten lucky that Jiyuu seemed to enjoy patrol as much as his father did. Particularly in those darker hours, when the pair of females and the foals could do with the extra space in the den.

Balint tumbled in behind his brother with a grin. "Were there sharp-teeth?" He bared his own teeth in a weak immitation. "Rawr!" Slipping between Jiyuu's forelegs, he moved into the den, tail swishing happily. "Don't be a-scared of the night, Bri. You can take care of anything sharp and toothy." He favored her with a sage nod, then looked up to Jiyuu. "You probably can too. If you get lucky."

The mare managed a weak grin. "Why thank you, Sir Balint, for the vote of confidence. No sharp teeth I'm afraid, just a silly old dream." Sending Chococo on her way with a gentle nudge of her nose, the filly stood and shook her head slightly at Jiyuu then glanced at Balint and Chococo. Later. Not here. Her message was quite clear.

"Too many legs in the nest, c'mon, out you go!" She shooed the young foals outside, keeping an eye out lest they stray too far from home. "Stay out of the tidepool mud or I'll personally scrub you behind the ears, fuzz-foals!" Embri waited for the two youngsters to get out of hearing range.

"Hey, what's that supposed to mean?" Jiyuu replied with a smirk, giving his brother a small shove for his comment. As Embri shooed the foals out of the nest, he turned his attention back onto his familiar. "Bouken, why don't you tag along with them. You might find some more snacks along the way." The stallion didn't feel completely safe of having his younger siblings out on their own, even if their father had just finished patrolling the area.

The Norora glanced up briefly at Jiyuu before nodding and trailing after the two smaller ones. More snackage was always a good thing in his book.

Chococo was a bit surprised when she suddenly found herself being booted from the nest, but she didn't protest. Instead she trotted over to Balint's side and snuggled him wordlessly. The "cootie" thing didn't bother her much.

"You're all up bright and early," Toshiro remarked with a small smile as he came into view. "Any special occasion that I have forgotten?"

(I am so sorry that this post took so long. I have no excuse. v.v
On a random note though, I just noticed that all of my charries post in different shades of brown. o.o lol.)

Balint looked up at his father with a soft snort. "We got kicked out." His gaze turned to the snuggling Chococo. "Hey! You can still keep all that up in the face of the adult conspiracy?" The fuzz on the back of his neck bristled as he shot Jiyuu a glance. The stallion was responsible somehow, he was sure.

Kindle offered her mate a soft but worried smile. Blue eyes flicked back to Embri. "Shall we give you a moment?"

Embri shook her head slightly. "It's not much, just... not something I wanted to scare the foals with." It all seemed silly now, in the light of day. What am I going to tell them, a big bad dream scared me? Even if it was a strangely real dream... I should be grown out of startling at shadows like a filly.

Flicking her ears back unhappily, the cream coated mare kept a wary eye on the two youngest of the family herd. "It was... falling. Out of the sky. Then I was on the ground, and there were others, but not like me... us. All white, and then... one of them attacked me. And I woke up."

I'm not sure I can explain it all ... Not sure I even understand. With a small shake of her head, Embri wuffled and nudged Kindle. "Shall we go wash up and leave the big strong defenders in charge of the foals, Kindle? I think I've got enough dust in my coat to make Jiyuu's little pet a mud wallow." Walking slowly out into the sunshine, Embri turned her horn towards the stream, tail swishing behind her.

Attacked? Kindle frowned severely and pushed herself up with a nod. A flick of her tail and she fell in beside the other mare. "We'll be back in a moment, boys. Don't miss us too much." Casting a glance back at her mate, she grinned softly. Perhaps Embri simply needed to talk.

Embri favored her adoptive dam with a guilty look as they disappeared out of sight from the rest of the herd, but remained silent. The soft thup-thup of their hooves on the soft ground was calming. The young mare studiously examined every stray shadow and sunbeam that cross their path, ears flicking back and forth to catch the faintest of sounds. Nothing but the ordinary noises - forest, wind through trees, the playful squeals of Chococo and Balint, deeper voices of Jiyuu and his sire, and the babble of the stream ahead.

As they reached the stream, Embri nosed about in the moss, finding a soft spot tucked up against the trunk of a stately old tree. Wrapping her tail about her legs, she sighed. "I feel bad leaving Toshiro and Jiyuu out... but... I'm not sure they'd understand." Sweeping her ears back with a nervous lick of her lips, she avoided Kindle's curious glances.

"You were kicked out, were you?" Toshiro replied with an amused smile to his son's remark. "Well, it must be for a reason then. Run along then."

Chococo smiled and gave Balint a light lick on the cheek. "Tidepools?" she said brightly before trotting off a bit, only pausing to look back and make sure that her brother was coming with.

Bouken meanwhile waited impatiently for the two foals to hurry up. There was usually good stuff to hunt in the tidepools, and he was eager to get there.

Once the foals were out of earshot, the two stallions listened as Embri told them about her dream. Shortly after she and Kindle walked off alone to the stream, leaving them on their own. "Huh. That was an odd dream," Jiyuu remarked, looking after the place where they had gone. "Wonder if it meant anything."

"It's hard to say," Toshiro replied, watching the kids from where they stood. "Dreams can be strange things."

Kindle regarded Embri with a long, thoughtful look, an ear flicking back. She barely noted the sounds of their family drifting from the beaches behind them. It was second nature now. It was the encroaching silence lately she feared more than anything. But she couldn't expect the children to remain with them forever. They had their own lives, their own dreams to pursue.

"What is it, Embri? What's bothering you?"

---------------------

"Gaaww," Balint groaned. He trudged along behind his sister. "There's stallion-talk going on Choco! You know I have to be there for that!" He puffed his little chest up proudly. "I'm the best fighter, you know!"

"Dreams." The mare pinned her ears back for a moment, smoothing out ruffled feathers absently with her muzzle. "I've... been having the same dream, more than once. " Embri sighed slightly, with a small shake of her head. "This is the first time ... it ... um... got serious." The young mare's expression looked to be equal parts unhappiness and embarrassment. The ways between does and bucks were no secret amongst Kirin, but they tended to leave her feeling quite uneasy for no definable reason she could name.

"Why do I keep having this dream over and over, Kindle?" Ears drooping, Embri stuck a foreleg in the cold stream, watching the water swirl around her pastern.
