Caroline watches her daughter, biting her nails in terror. She wasn't going to try and swim for it, was she?

Rojiza instantly hops down from the wagon seat after reigning the horse pulling Honeyed Aria. She shoves Solas into Valelldia's arms and takes off toward the river. Hope I don't drown... She watches Vahe swoop down and land atop the nearly-crushed wagon.

She stops at the riverbank. She isn't precisely a strong swimmer...running, jumping, and climbing trees were more her style. The river looks swift. Best not to risk it....aha!

She picks up some large rocks and throws them as hard as she can at the window. On the fifth or sixth one it breaks and the Banya escapes, shrieking. Vahe takes off again and lands neatly on her shoulder. The old gypsy's Banya does a few circles in the air before coming to rest on her other shoulder. Ro sighs and sits down, legs trembling.

Baptiste steadies and stops Jolie and Folle and then vaults off of the wagon seat. Per Tamlin's orders, he grabs his thickest blanket and some spare clothes from the wagon and sets about trying to find a place to build a fire without setting the grass ablaze. He grabs some large rocks from the river and sets them in a circle, then gets kindling and a couple logs from the back of Val's wagon and gets at lighting the fire in earnest.

Zak started walking along the bank and hauling in the rope, this way the old guy would be swung into shore with a bit less effort.
"out of my way please" Zak said to the cluster of not-so-helpfuls around him as he waded into the water and picked up the old guy under his shoulder and hauled him up onto the grassy dry bank.
Rana stared intently at the old guy and barked once more "quit it" said Zak patting her on the head, aww come on speckle guy, lame thing, really she thought.
"any body else in the water with you?" Zak asked the old guy as he coiled the rope for another toss.

If there was one advantage to being at the back of the caravan it was that Tsura could see ahead for quite a bit. With most of the others concerned with saving the man and anything alive, and rightfully so it only left his things to collect. She swiftly turned Copper and Ink towards the riverbank. She might be slightly further down the river but the current was still strong.

The dark haired woman hauled the oxen up as close to the water she could without upsetting the balance of her wagon. Hopping of the wagon seat Tsura plunged into the cold water wading out as far as she could get without releasing her grip on the long wagon reins. She might be able to swim but the cold water made her lungs work harder for ever breath and her body numb. At least if she held the reins ink and copper could pull her back ashore if anything went wrong

That and it made it a little easier to wait as clothing and cookware floated towards her. Everything she could grab would be flung ashore with her spare arm.

"Oh, bless you....bless you both!" exclaims the old man as Zak and Lesh haul him ashore. He sits on the riverbank and shivers slightly, but doesn't say anything. He's trying to keep some of his pride intact.

He feels a nudge on his shoulder, and turns to see his horse. Delighted, he exclaims, "Xavier!" And hugs his horse around the muzzle. Okay, damn his pride anyway. He looks around for who could have pulled him from the water, and appears startled to see the soaking wet Tamlin. "Child, please don't tell me you jumped into that river to free my horse. "You could have been killed!"

And then he sees everyone else that had leapt to help him. "My gods, you've all quit your doin's to help save an old man and his livelihood. Thank you....thank you all!"

"It was the least we could do for a fellow traveler." Leshya'e smiled at the old man, giving his shoulder a squeeze. She pushed the fallen strands of hair back off her face and turned to see Ani, Tsura and others catching and saving the man's belongings. Deciding they would all need to be dried off and warmed up once they got out, she headed back to Varekai to gather more blankets and then joined Baptiste at his fire.

Ani and Veshengo looked up, glad to see that the man was safely out of the water. Blushing slightly, Ani lowered her head, shy of the mans thanks and praise. Once his arms were full, Veshengo put down the items on the shore, then began to gather more. "Quick thinking there, Ani." Veshengo smiled and gestured at the resourceful rabbit.

Tamlin flashed a grin up at the old man as she stood bent over the river bank wringing out her soaked underthings and hair "No worries Grandfather. Born and bred on an island was I, I've been swimming since I was born. And not a whit of this was more then we should have done, it's common sense to help a fellow traveler."

"'Sides," Tamlin continued on a bit sheepishly, " Lost my wagon just the same as you not so long ago, so I understand your situation. I've got new company now; company nice enough to follow instructions and prepare warm blankets and if I don't miss my guess a fire should be started soon so we ALL can warm our chilled bones. But first, lets see if'n we cannot fish out some more of your things, I believe I still see someone down there collecting all she can carry right now."

Zak shrugged "No trouble" he said.
Rana was grinning, as proud as Rin Tin Tin. Zak idly put a hand on her head and scritched behind her ears, "Blame m' dog for the tip off"

After sitting by the fire, wrapped in a blanket, and drinking some hot tea, the old gypsy sorts through what belongings he has left. "I s'pose it was a good thing I was planning on retiring to that town just over the river," he says with a nod. "I'm hardly a respectable merchant anymore, with no wares but these to sell, and no wagon to transport 'em in." He shakes his head and pulls his blanket closer. Though he'd been a shrewd trader and merchant in his time, his heart had softened with his years, and he suddenly feels the need to give away what little treasures he has left to the generous folk who'd saved him and what they could of his livelihood.

He nods resolutely. "S'pose the only right thing t'do is to give these things to you lot. I apologize that they're soggy and probably a bit broken, but it's the least I could do. Perhaps you'll find a use for them."

He sorts through his things to find the most appropriate gift for each of the gypsies who'd helped him.

First the old man turns to Zak. "For you, my lad, some boots. Might let them dry a pace 'fore puttin' them on, but you'll surely need them if you're traveling further north."

Next, he addresses Tamlin. "I can't thank you enough, little lady, for saving my horse. He's old and ornery, but he's my only friend. I'm sorry I don't have much in the way of ladies' trinkets, but please take this. The gold will look lovely in your hair."

Next he smiles at Leshaye and Anezka. "It's been many years since I've had the pleasure to meet a Fortunette. You're both brave and clever women, for sure, and I wish I could do more to reward you. But take these, gypsy mother. May they capture the starlight as your hair captures the firelight."

"As for you, my dear," he says, addressing Ani, "I wish I could give you some sage advice for your quest for growth, but I am old, and I follow a different sect of magic. What I can tell you, however, is that the town up ahead has a prophet of the Meij who might be able to answer questions you might have. I wish you every success."

Last, he turns to Tsura. "And for you, you may have this lantern. It's a bit corroded, but I'm sure it'll still light." Truthfully he'd never been able to get the blasted thing to light, but she didn't need to know that, and he was running out of things to give away.

Tsura smiled as she held the old, orange and purple lantern." Thank you," she murmured. She might have gotten damned cold in that river fetching things but it was the right thing to do. Helping other travelers was in her mind an unspoken rule, receiving the lantern was an unnecessary gesture but a welcomed one regardless. Now she just needed to keep Berit and Gisli from claiming it as their own before she had a chance to see it restored to it's former glory.

Leshya'e graciously accepted the gift, bowing her head in thanks. "Thank you, sir...Thank you very much." She gazed at the clips for moment, then placed them in the pouch that was tied to her belt. She then turned to look at Ani as the man spoke to her, putting her arm around her daughters shoulder.

Ani's eyes lit up as she heard about the prophet, her heart fluttering happily. "That's wonderful!...Did you hear that Val?...Oh that's wonderful...Thank you, so much, that was better then any gift..." She smiled and made a soft squealing sound, excited and anxious to see the prophet and hear what they may say.

Zak broke into a smile with surprise as he took the boots. " oh! these are just what I need" he felt the insides they were soft sheep's skin under the heavy leather and tough rubber soles "thank you"
