She was content with his nuzzling and even returned the affection. This had turned out to be a wonderful day, indeed. The night took over the sky, turning it a dark, dark shade of blue, they had been standing there, side by side, for quite a while. Overhead, a large cloud of thousands of bats flapped through the air, guided by their echoing squeaks. They created a song of their own, blending in with the crickets and other night-sounds of the swamp. All of this: the sounds, the feelings, the buck who stood next to her; it all made her feel at ease, and very sleepy all of a sudden.
So, doing the only thing natural, she settled down, right where they were, where they could see everything around them. And, leaning up against Mourning Fog, Life-Pulse's eyelids grew heavy and eventually closed altogether, falling into a deep, peaceful sleep.

Careful not to disturb her, he slowly slid down to the trunk beside her. They leaned on each other now and he let his own eyes close. In the darkness, all he could do was hear and feel. He felt Life-Pulse's sides moving with her breath, he could hear the air rushing in and out of her nose. Again, he tried to listen to the swamp around him, not just the nightbirds and frogs, but concentrating again on the bass of the swamp, the trees and mud and stones. This time, he thought he heard a low whisper. But he must have been dreaming, he had fallen asleep.
Sunwing glided down beside them as Mourning Fog settled himself and tucked her neck into her side for warmth as she fell asleep as well.
