"Eight Turns on the sea, huh? Don't suppose you're from the Hold, then." Merik smirked a little. "Remind me to come find you next time I have filthy chores." Which seemed like it would be every day, by the looks of the other Candidates around him. There where still even little flashing bits of grime in Zafir's hair (though, admittedly, they made it even more fun to look at). Candidates weren't regarded as much outside of the Weyr, but from the inside, it was pretty apparent that there WAS a rank lower than Apprentice. Until they hit 21 Turns, the whole lot of them had essentially been reduced to drudges. Or until I get lucky on the Sands, he thought with a wide, sudden grin. Drudgery was a small price to pay for the chance he'd been given!

Merik had to pause and think about that question for second. "Well, I've only been here about a day. I slept in the Hall last night..." he chuckled a little. "It was late when I decided to turn in, and I got lost. It seemed like an easier plan than running around looking for my Searchrider or the Candidatemaster in the dark. My things are all collecting dust in the lower caverns somewhere... I think the kitchens, but I'm not sure. I have to got find them, and my room... Faranth knows where that could be." Really, he could've put it all off for another day or two, but that probably wasn't in his stiff neck's best interest. "Nothing pressing, but I'd like to get it done before dark. Nobody showed me exactly how one goes about getting a glowbasket around here."

Zafir stuck out his tongue, face wrenching up. "I'm from South Boll, actually. Or, I suppose, the Weavercrafthall. Regardless of that, I don't have any intention to do your chores for you. Fish-gutting is one thing, and I'm used to it, but if you get assigned to shovel dung that, my friend, is your own problem." He laughed again. This young man was fun to be around, at least. They would have to do something together some time.

"That's an interesting issue. My searchrider simply told me where to throw my things, before disappearing to do whatever he needed to do. Did you arrive after dark, to be abandoned? But, I'm sure there are more than enough people that someone will know where you're staying."

Weavercraft? Well, if Zafir wouldn't do chores for him, at least Merik could pester the boy about making him new clothes every time his were grimed beyond repair. If Candidates were all as fun as this lot, it looked like he had a very enjoyable ahead of him.
Merik snirked at the mention of cleaning dung, having just been thinking about it in the exact opposite way. "Actually, in case you couldn't tell," he pulled his shirt out of his belt for a moment, showing off the yellow and white bull's head with a great degree of pride, "I was a Beastcrafter before. Shoveling is the last thing I'll need help with!"

He rubbed his chin thoughtfully for a second. "Though it does seem like I'll need help with everything else. It won't be a problem finding my room, I'm sure, since the Candidates seem all crowded together. But finding the Candidatemaster again could prove something of a challenge. Actually," he laughed, "I'm not even sure where I am right now."

Zafir eyed the patch briefly. He had not, in fact, noticed it before and felt more than a little oblivious for it. It was probably just the effect of spending two years trying to teach himself six years of skills, but having not noticed the crafter patch another person was wearing made him feel awful, if only for a moment. Then, it just made him grateful once more for dark skin. Amazing. He'd been out for less than half a candlemark, and already he'd embarrassed himself twice. At least, though, nice, normal, sane people would not think he was embarrassed by such tiny bits of oblivion.

He caught the last of Merik's statements in time to raise an eyebrow. "You don't know where you are? Did you walk here with your eyes closed?" Zafir half laughed, "Or were you too busy being lost and new to notice?" There was a mocking tone, tempered by the clear joke of the statement. After all, Zafir had only been here two days. He was very nearly as new and lost as his Beastcrafting friend. "I'll just have to take you back myself, eventually."

The weaver dropped back beneath the water again, shaking his head violently beneath the surface. He was sure that there were still bits of filth clinging to him, and if half the candidates smelled like he had earlier, the barracks would stink. He wanted to contribute as little as possible to that, and that meant making sure nothing was left to rot on top of his head. He bobbed back to the surface, after a long moment, with hair messily plastered in weird angles around his face.

"If I can ever get clean again, that is. I knew there must have been a reason we had out hair short on the sea. That's what I get for deciding to let it grow."

Raedue grinned at the mutual splashing he got. He settled down for a bit, just listening to the other two boys talk. Weavercraft and beast craft eh? Well, he certainly agreed with the beastcraft boy about help repairing clothes. He could do his own just fine, and his shoes, but sometimes you just didn't want to do the mending yourself. "Mmmmm. If anybody needs help with shoes, I can do that. Nothing big, but we runners have to make our own footwear you know. Simple sandals and shoes I can handle though." He snickered at Zafir's reaction to the grime adorning his head, even though he knew he would likely be in a similar situation soon enough. "Oh I don't know about that. THere's just something about running your fingers through a partner's long hair. And the feel of the wind as it whips through it is simply divine."

Zafir cut back a chuckle at Raedue's reply. "I had enough of wind on the boats to last me a lifetime. Sometimes, I still wonder why I agreed to this, when I was just fine making clothes. Ah well."

Then, a conniving look came over Zafir's face, though it lasted only a second, and he shook his head violently, hoping that some of the resulting spray would smack Raedue's face. And perhaps a scale or two. "You're welcome to try running your hand through this mess," he joked, "but it won't be my responsibility when you slice a finger on something sharp!"

Raedue spluttered at still somewhat smelly mess of water that got him in the face. "Oh yuck. That's just nasty." He ducked under and hastily scrubbed the residual muck off his face. "Simply nasty. You want me to try running my hands through that mess do you?" He grinned and pounced Zafir, grabbing him by the shoulders to dunk him underwater.

Zafir had just enough time to make a strangled squawk before his mouth was filled with an unexpected deluge of lake water. That was the trouble with lakes. No matter how strong you might be, when you were a good handspan shorter than everyone else on Pern- or so it seemed- being dunked was astoundingly common. And yet, he'd never gotten used to it. His feet met the muck-filled floor of the lake and he bent his knees, ready to launch himself up as soon as he got the chance.

When the hands loosened on his shoulders, he sprang back up, and spluttered for a moment in the air. But, his face was free of scowls, at least. "Ah. And there goes that invitation to watch me strip. Poor little you!" Zafir half sang. "That's what you get!

He gasped in mock horror. "What? I don't get to watch you strip? But I was just helping you wash that muck you've made of your hair. Surely you wouldn't punish me for that?" He paused hopefully then sighed longingly. "Ah, well. I suppose I shall have to content myself with my imagination. Though it seems as if the water has given me a bit of help what wih fitting your clothes very close to your body, eh?" Raedue leered at the other man. "Seriously though. I'm willing to help you pick muck out of your hair so you don't slice your fingers in the cleaning process if you like."
