"There was nobody else - just the two of us." Alucard glanced back at the Runt affectionately, then turned back to continue.
"We didn't even know exactly what we were hunting. All we knew was that we were hungry, and there was something living we could feed on. So we stalked it, and it ran faster and faster -
And when we burst through a bush to a clearing, we met not a cowed, frightened creature, but a huge frilled face with slitted eyes, nostrils, a forked tongue, and many, many teeth. Too many teeth. Drawing back its wings, it hissed murder at us and snapped at my nose...
All we could do was run, and in her case, fly."
He laughed a little at the memory. It seemed so funny, now that he'd survived and was grown. Himself as an adolescent, not much bigger than Jahdara, first playing hunter and then the hunted.
"We were such fools!"

Jahdara had looked up at him with traces of her meal evident upon her lips to listen. "Wow..." she started then licked her lips clean. "What was it? I've never seen one of them before!" she admitted. If anything, she now knew to avoid it later in the future if need be.
She looked down at the kill of tonight and gently nudged it with her hoof. "And what do you call this thing?"
She gave Jero a nod that he understood to mean 'eat up'. He only guessed she was done and soon found that he guessed right as she stepped back to the river for a quick drink to wash it all down.

((FYI: The creature Alu's talking about is an enviro-critter, not a familiar, and can be found here. wink )) "As long as you are with me, no winged lizard can harm you," answered Alucard, nuzzling his daughter affectionately and careful to avoid her wounds.
He found himself unable to answer her question, and gazed curiously down at the body between them. "Hn. I haven't seen this very often... possibly because I killed the first one I met and was witnessed by others of its kind. The group in this area probably decided Kirin are dangerous.
Call it anything you like," The stallion said, with a shrug and a half-smile. "How does it taste, good?"
