"It wasn't," Faolan said simply, not willing to give the man anymore. He hadn't liked the rogue Essentic, but he'd not be responsible for him being hunted down.

Faolan chuckled a bit at the other question. "Don't have to be related to be brothers, lad. Tryst and I are . . . you could say we're brothers in all but blood. There's a connection there, true enough. He's my best friend."

"I'm hardly docile or cute," Ziazan pouted--rather cutely, actually--and glared at the man. "I don't know much about my evolution cycle or the human's stupid fear of things they don't understand. They created us, they should have known us better. But then, I wasn't there, so I wouldn't know what my kind did in the past to anger yours. I know I'd never hurt my dad or mama, though. I'd never hurt anyone. It's just not . . . my purpose." The child looked down at the table, moving a hand to idly pick at one of the cards on it, frowning a bit. It knew it wasn't capable of hurting people, but this man was convinced and, well, it had flung itself at the man only moments before out of anger. Zia sighed, closing its eyes, a sorrowful look coming across its features.

"Ah, I was wondering when I would get to meet the best friend," Kaosu replied, managing to keep his tone indifferent despite the foreign trickle of emotions that had infiltrated his system. This man... he knew Trystan better than he did. That made Kao uncomfortable. Was he jealous? He almost snorted out loud at the ridiculous notion. "How did you two become so close?" he asked, unable to stop himself from prodding for information on the subject.

The red head, almost reluctantly returned his attention to Zia. "Not cute? See? You're already a liar," Kao teased despite himself. "Your purpose... that's actually at the root of the problem. Why your kind threatened mine. Why you can't be considered human," he mused dryly. "I'm not saying you'll hurt "Dad" physically or intentionally. But as long as you're not human, you're only digging him into an emotional hole." He had gotten into a bad habit of preaching lately. He really needed to stalk talking so much these days....

Faolan gave a soft snort of laughter. "Mentioned me, did he? I ain't sure how we got close. We met and our . . . well, if you know him then you know Crux. He and Zia wanted to talk and Tryst freaked and dragged me into an alley. I thought he was going to kill me. Then we realized we were . . . of a kind. I invited him to come to Farstep with me to talk and party, he accepted. Now he comes by whenever he pleases. Honestly, the man knows no boundaries sometimes. Scares the hell out of my wife."

Zia looked up at the man, rainbow eyes glistening a bit with unshed tears. "Not being human doesn't exactly mean he can't be emotionally attached to me, or I to him. I do feel. I have a mind and a personality of my own. I'm not human, but I'm not just a thing, either. His attachment to me is no different than the love you hold for that gun."

"So you two met through your Essentics," Kaosu stated, feeling slightly left out. It was not that he wanted an Essentic for himself -he simply hated the fact that this fortune teller might have more in common with Trystan than he did. Tch. How insecure. ""Of a kind"? What do you mean by that?" Nope, he was still being insecure. Upon hearing the word "wife" he visibly relaxed. Silly Kao, getting all worked up over nothing.

Kao recoiled a bit when he finally noticed that he had gotten under Zia's skin. Whoops. He had not meant to genuinely upset the little thing... though he supposed his words had been pretty upsetting. A twinge of guilt slipped in to his system, but he refused to acknowledge it. "Trust me, I don't love this gun. Quite the opposite, actually," he replied flatly. "I sure hope your relationship is different."

"I mean we're both halfbreeds. A strange amount I have in common with my brother, but also not a lot. It's sometimes a symbiotic relationship. He needs me and this place and, in my way, I need him and his information of what I really am," Faolan said softly, leaning down to hug Zia gently, knowing his little one was upset.

Zia said nothing more to the man, moving around in its seat to wrap skinny arms around Fao's waist, a child wanting comfort from its parent. Faolan just sighed, stroking the Essentic's back and looked at Kaosu. "Zia's not bad, you know. I don't really know about the first Essentics or any of that, but the ones I know and Zia, they're good people--yes, people. They love and respect their owners and the people around them. Zia loves my wife as a child loves its mother. You can't tell me that Essentics don't have their own souls or that they're just objects."
PostPosted: Wed Jun 10, 2009 10:34 pm

"Halfbreeds. I see. That makes three of us," Kaosu clarified for himself, clearly relieved by this harmless definition. He was ridiculous. Why had the fact that this guy knew Trystan better bothered him? They had probably been in contact for much longer -it was only natural. "You two sound close. It's a wonder that wife of yours doesn't get jealous~" Still insecure. He hoped that this fortune teller was not picking up on his silly behavior.

He watched with an unreadable expression as Fao moved to comfort Ziazan. Again that interminable shred of guilt stirred in his gut. He smothered it hastily. He would not feel bad about upsetting an Essentic. "I'm sure he's perfectly well behaved. With perfectly good intentions. But that's the problem. He's not a person. He can't be. Unless he breaks away from that internal programming of his -his purpose- he's nothing more than a fancy tool mimicking human behavior. And if he does obtain an identity... overcome that disgusting subservience he was designed for... he'll become something worse."

"Small world indeed, then. Tryst and I are as close as he lets it get, I think. He's welcome to my home anytime he pleases, but I've yet to visit his. Elle doesn't worry about us. She knows what my relationship is to Tryst and that it has no baring on my marriage to her," Fao said, giving the man a look. He was only slightly curious as to why the man cared so much how close he and Tryst were.

Fao looked down at Zia when the man spoke again, then back at Kao. "Zia's never been my servant. I've always treated it as family, as a person. Whatever it was designed to be and what I know Zia to be from living with it . . . I know Zia's a person of its own. It can't be anything else. It identifies too much with people to be just a tool. I don't think it could be anything bad." He gave a small smirk. "And stop calling Zia a 'he'. It's never decided on a gender and I'm not about to let someone that doesn't even know it or like it press being male upon it."

"You haven't been to his home? You mean that silly pent house apartment of his? That's funny. I got the impression he brought guys there all of the time," Kaosu commented incredulously, seriously comforted by this information. Okay, enough was enough. No more being insecure. He was an adult. He could be rational. "Mmm, this Elle of yours sounds like a pretty reasonable girl~"

Kao blinked when Fao called him on his mistake. When had he started calling Ziazan a "he"? That he had slipped into the habit without realizing it disturbed him. Giving that thing a gender... that was too close to acknowledging it as a living creature. My mistake," he hastily amended, stubbornly refusing to admit that he had just, in a small way, contradicted himself. "Did it ever occur to you that you might be responsible for its behavior? Essentics develop into what their owners want them to be. You treat is as a family member... you want it to be a family member... it's only natural that it acts like one. That doesn't give it an identity. You gave him that identity."

Faolan laughed out loud and long. "Ay, ay, lad, no. Trystan and I are not ********'. Never have. We're just friends." He grinned, nodding. "Aye, my wife is the normal one in the marriage. She's every bit the reason to my chaos, you could say."

He shrugged a bit at the accusations, though. "I never told Zia to call me its dad or to call my wife its mama. It learned that on its own. They are capable of developing some traits on their own, you know. If I had a choice in how it develops, I don't think I'd have let it have its first kiss with Crux. You know Tryst and how he is. He never taught Crux what love was, and yet he does feel it for Zia. They aren't always what we intend them to be."

Kaosu did not know whether to laugh with Fao in relief or be taken aback by his language. This man... was very straightforward. The redhead had not dealt with anyone anything like him in a long time. He did not necessarily hate the guy's personality, he simply felt awkward responding to it, "I see. Must take one hell of a woman to keep you in line~" Discussing relationships was not exactly his strong point.

Preaching about Essentics, on the other hand, definitely was. "Yes, they develop traits on their own... but the traits they choose to nurture they choose in order to please their masters. He might have picked up on those pet names because he sensed they would make you more comfortable." The description of the two AIs falling for each other surprised Kao. Geez, this generation worked fast. "And in that case... Maybe he was simply imitating you and your wife?"

He shrugged, "Crux is harder to peg, but I can assure you he's been exposed to a kind of love by now. "

"Eh, she hardly keeps me in line, but I behave myself true enough for her. Besides, we got bairns on the way and it'd do no good to be stupid and get hurt or other and not be there for her and the weans," Fao said, shrugging. He moved a bit, nudging Zia to let go of him, the little Essentic wiping at its face and looking for all the world like a normal, sullen twelve-year-old child . . . with rainbow eyes.

The young man sat down with a soft sigh. "If Crux was exposed to love, then I'd say Zia was more the one that did it than Tryst. I don't doubt the man's begrudging affection for his Essentic, but he and I raised ours differently and Crux and Zia learned things from each other that we did not teach them. As for how it imitates us, maybe it learned to call me Da from listening to me and my own parent, but I don't know where it learned calling Elle Mama from. I never had a mother and we certainly don't interact with other families here much. Frankly, I'm comfortable with whatever Zia calls me. Maybe it refers to me as its dad because that's how it feels comfortable."

Zia sniffled a little and looked up at the man, speaking in a soft, almost inaudible voice. "Could be that calling him Da makes it easier for me to hide among humans. People are more willing to believe Faolan has a child my apparent age than they are to believe he's harboring an Essentic. I don't mind playing the part of his child if it keeps us both safe. He didn't teach me that, I came up with it on my own."

Kaosu took a moment to decipher Faolan's dialect. Yes, that would be a shame," he stated slowly, grasping for a response. Babies. Marriage. Familial responsibility. All of these concepts were entirely foreign to him. Normally, being the experienced liar he was, he could fudge knowledge on any topic. This time, however, all he could compose was idle chitchat, "Kids on the way. Plural. Unless you've got a mistress somewhere I'm assuming that means she's having twins? Poor thing."

Listening quietly to the fortune teller's explanation, Kao slowly began to realize that this discussion was going to go nowhere. The stubborn redhead would definitely not budge on his opinion. He had no reason to believe he could influence Fao, either. "I wasn't referring to Tryst's affection towards Crux..." he shifted his train of thought hastily. "But wherever they learned affection from... wherever that one picked up the word "Mama"... That doesn't change the fact that they are only mimicking human behavior."

Stupid Zia. If the creature kept acting so cute and depressed, Kao would lose the nerve to openly insult it. No. He was not about feel pity for an Essentic. He was not about to watch his tongue. "You came up with it on your own? To blend in? Probably... That's exactly the problem. Exactly what I'm talking about. What kind of child decides to behave childlike? To show his guardians love? It should be natural. It should be instinct. "Dad" should have been one of the first words out of your mouth. Instead, all you're doing is putting on a charming little charade. Pretending. Filling a role unconsciously assigned to you so that you may better fulfill your purpose."

"Enough." Faolan stood up, hand on Zia's shoulder. "You come in my place of business, in my carnival and dare to insult one of my family members in front of me. No, don't try to call Zia anything else. Whatever you think Essentics are, I know what my Zia is and right now, you're making it cry. I won't have you spouting this nonsense to it and making it feel worthless. Regardless of where or how or what its learned, it doesn't change what it has feelings. I don't think they're mimicked in the least. Zia's proven itself to have real emotions and thoughts. Maybe it thought to blend in as a child now, but only because it didn't look like a child before."

He walked to the door of the booth and opened it, looking pointedly at Kaosu. "Whatever you are to Trystan, it has no baring on how I view you. I think you should leave now before you say anything more. I'd hate to deprive Trystan of his new friend."

Kaosu caught himself getting carried away. That last little tirade of his had been... too much. More opinion than fact. More speculation than scientific law. As much as he liked to preach, he had worked himself up and forgotten that Essentic owners these days were ridiculously attached to their pets. Why had he deliberately put Ziazan down? Was he secretly miffed that the cheeky bugger had attacked him? No, that was not it. Sure, he believed his words to be the truth, but as the fortune teller had said, the truth was not always what people needed to hear. For what purpose did he feel the need to confuse every poor Essentic he met?

"Sorry, I did not mean to offend. Clearly we simply have conflicting viewpoints," he finally replied evenly. Without protest, he lazily rose to his feet and padded towards the exit. "I should not have tried to foist mine on you and your "family member". You are correct." He shrugged, pretending to be indifferent, "I'm mature enough to admit when I'm wrong. So I'll leave you in peace and pretend I didn't hear that threat." Hostility did not really bother him. Not anymore. He was more frustrated with himself than he was with Zia or Fao.

"Hopefully our next meeting will end on better terms," he finished, stepping back into the busy carnival. Knowing fate and how she liked to twist life, he was certain that this was not the last time he would see the odd half-demon and his partner-in-crime.
