Astril nearly died, her heart skipping a beat. Oh no...no no no no...Stupid stupid!!She stood perfectly still and straight, trying to melt into thin air, hoping she wouldn't be reprimanded for her mistake. She barely breathed as the man stood up, marking a check next to her name on his strangely significant clipboard. Astril smiled weakly as the man looked coldly at her, then went to the next line of recruits.

"Nice job, sneazles." The man behind her was smirking, arms crossed, as if he enjoyed her misery. Astril simply turned a cold shoulder to him, knowing well how this kind of person would take her actions. The man grabbed her arm and jerked her around to face him. "I was talking to you girly. Dont you look away from me." Eyes glazing over a bit, Astril yanked her arm away. "You don't like it when people don't respond to you, and get angry when you don't have your way. Stupid child, don't expect me to give you the attention your parents never did." Falling silent, she turned her back on the stunned man.

Besides their clashing viewpoints, there was another reason Marius always tried to avoid Gabriel. His serious disposition, constant state of dress - armor, and his extreme viewpoints; they didn't terrify Marius, but they brought a fear about him that one experiences when faced with something unknown. Whether it be the dark, someone from another country, or a towering associate always encased in armor, there was always the irrational fear. Marius hid it well with his smile.

"Ah, well, that would be lovely! I do hope that I shan't be interrupting her, though, in a time of...undress," he said quickly, rounding off his sentence with a chuckle. He stuffed his hands in his pants pockets and began to stroll along the big armored man.

He wanted no silence, awkward tension between them, so he quickly searched his mind for some current event that they could talk about - after all, they had nothing else in common but the world around them.

"So, the devil's coming here, it seems. Is that why everyone's all fussing around, you think?" he said with a slight astonishment, speaking as though he had just figured that out. Which, in fact, he had, as he often did with many ideas. Marius did not live in thoughts, but words.

Solstice felt her ears twitch as Marius’ voice approached. Of course that fool had just figured that mess out, but she should be easier on him. He had never experienced the annual meal. Last year’s in particular was a tense affair, considering the falling of an Advocate to poison. Even she only had an inkling of who had done it, but that was a matter for later, and private. Never mind it, she needed to speak to Marius for now.

In her full gown, she stepped through the curtain, and in view of her two most frequent companions. Her hair was now up in an experimental style, but she needed to see her second-in-command. ”Marius, there you are,” Solstice said, not bothering to hide her scolding tone. ”I’d be on your a** for missing practice, but it was abysmal anyways. The men are distracted with Lucifer coming soon. You will be at my side, or near me at banquet. Oh, and Gabriel,” Her eyes turned sharp. ”There will be no incidents this year. None.” Without asking, she pulled Marius in, as she sat back down to let them experiment more. ”We need to speak about tonight.”

Before Gabriel could answer, Solstice appeared, looking amazing in a dress. Marius would have complimented her instantly, but she began, of course, with a semi-scolding and orders. She pulled him in and paused, giving him a chance to speak.

"I thank you for sparing my a** this time," he said, sounding genuinely relieved. "I apologize for missing practice...I..." he said before realizing he had no good excuse. He continued as though he had finished his previous sentence.

"I would consider no position other than by your side at the banquet," he said with his charming smile. "What do you have to discuss?" he asked, trying to hide his desperation to know. Social situations were usually a simple matter for him, but this...just seemed different, and since this was his first time at the function - he only had been appointed within the year - he needed as many notes as he could.

Solstice smiled a bit, happy not to receive any sass from Marius. She had gotten enough of that already today, and had been expecting more, even though her second in command had never sassed her before. What pleased her more was that he didn’t lie about missing practice, or give her some crap excuse, like he used to do in the beginning.

”Plenty actually…the most important being is this event. And it is a fiasco of affairs, every single year. Last year especially, someone poisoned a trusted Advocate of Lucifer’s. I will not voice my suspicions on who did it, but I will ask that you keep an eye on Gabriel during the banquet. Lucifer has been his worst nightmare for many many years…they do not go good together at all. But, you likely, as long as you remain respectful, find that demon has a…personality that you would not expect from him. I heard him at the one two years ago discussing of all things gardening. I cannot fully prepare you for any events that may happen…”

Marius did his best to keep his attention, but he could only nod and smile for so long. The mention of Gabriel did not nothing to help keep his interest on the subject; he could vaguely hear himself think, '...because I just love watching someone that utterly dislikes me.' However, there came a point when he realized that Lucifer would be there. At the table. With Marius. Now, if he pieced everything he has heard before together, he would have found this out a lot earlier. But of course, Marius lived in words, not thoughts. Excitement began bubbling up from his curiosity, so he was actually looking forward to this banquet. 'What is the Devil like?' was one of his frequent thoughts from then on.

Also, Marius found nothing wrong with the subject of gardening, and Solstice's mention of that only added fuel to the fire of his excitement.

"Though you cannot fully prepare me, is there anything you need me to do, specifically, of course?" he asked, trying to coat his words with respect. 'Like, for instance, speak with the Devil for any reason?' he thought. He did not equate him with a celebrity, no, for he had no admiration for him. Yet there was something so compelling, something that wouldn't settle in Marius until he met the man and that something was satisfied. Marius did his best to contain his excitement while he spoke, but only Solstice would see how well he fared.

Solstice thought briefly, her mind working through several scenarios. ”Truthfully, no. Be respectful should he or the Advocates talk to you, but you’re not the one I have to worry about with them. God will want me talking to Lucifer I’m sure,” She sighed a bit. ”Every single time he’s here, somehow I wind up alone with him, or having to decide something with him. Every single time.” She shrugged, then got swatted a bit for moving. She glared through the mirror at the stylist.

”I’m going to a banquet, not a wedding,” Solstice snapped, then grew confused as the stylists all began giggling. She looked at Marius. ”Did I miss something?” She asked him.

This was perfect.

"No, you seem to have covered everything,"Marius said, putting as much etiquette and respect into his tone as he could muster. He had not even thought that he looked desperate, though it was apparent.

That all changed when, with an upturn of a corner of his lips, he got down on one knee so that he had to look up at Solstice. Marius put on his best "charming man" façade and looked up at her.

"May I escort you at the banquet?" he asked with a twinkle of a secret in his eye, hoping she would understand and comply. If he went with her wherever she went, she would not have to fear being alone with the Devil. 'And I'd have a higher chance of meeting and conversing with him,' he thought, hoping she wouldn't see that wish next to the slyness in his eyes that he wanted her to see.

"I promise to be on my best behavior," he vowed, knowing she was aware of how difficult that was for him. Though she did not know that with his goal in mind of meeting Lucifer, the trouble in that would decrease significantly.

Solstice looked down at him, amused by his actions. She found herself gaining that reaction more and more often around her mischievous second-in-command. Never would she admit such a thing, but the Holy Warriors needed him, they needed someone with personality. That was why she let him be second-in-command instead of Gabriel when she had been given the choice. As far as she knew, neither of them knew, and that was for the better.

"I'll say yes just to see that happen. You, on your best behavior for an entire banquet? Through dancing, political conversations, and thinly veiled threats and treaties...it'll be worth it," Solstice replied, teasing him openly for once, showing her fun side for the first time.

Astril was silent once again, seeing the demonic Sargent make another notorious mark on the increasingly intimidating clipboard. She swallowed hard as he walked by, glaring at her. " Miss Ressein, you've been randomly selected to try some "in field" testing." Astril stood motionless, her heart thumping away in her chest like a bongo drum. "I'm not sure I..."But she was cut off as the man sucked in a sharp breath. "That wasn't a request." He growled, teeth showing eerily. Astril was led forward, out towards a field were a pair of people were standing. The rest of the rows followed along to observe.

Her breath coming in sharp, short gasps. The other students were staring intently at Astril as she stepped towards the people. "The simulation is beginning. Be ready, because this will go on the final report to Lucifer himself." Shaking it off, she stepped towards the pair.

Marius chuckled at her words and picked up her hand, kissing it lightly, before standing up.

"Thank you, Miss Captain. I shan't disappoint," he said, finishing off his gentleman charade. 'I do hope I shall not disappoint...' he thought. Her words had made his task a harsher reality, and they caused a bit of doubt to slip into his young little head. His excitement did much to douse it, but doubt was a tricky thing to extinguish. Still, it was enough so that the child-like smile that bloomed on his face was genuine. The wide smile held a stark difference between it and the cool, smooth expression that it had replaced, so no one would be blamed if he or she had doubts about his previous promise.

"Well, it seems I have a banquet to get ready for!" he said with all the excitement that his smile held. It was almost as if he was just about to jump right out of the room. In that composure, he made his way to the door. However, he paused just at the door, lingering on the frame.

"By the way...you look lovely," he said with a dangerous wink and an even deadlier tone of voice before sliding out of the room. Once he was out of sight, he giggled to himself and skipped to his room.

Walking up to the people, Astril smiled sweetly as they turned towards her. She stood next to them staring up into the dark clouds, humming a flowery tune. " Do you ever wonder what the point in living really is? Its like, we're raised our whole lives, just taking one step after another towards death. Why wait? Why not just leap those steps, finish what you know is ending anyways? I know you want to argue about how that would send you to hell, but cant you see your already living in it? How many people are killed, are tortured a day? Or lose their lives to disease? Theres destruction everywhere we turn, what would be the point of just waiting? Just end it now. Save yourself the heartache of seeing people you love pass, then passing and never seeing your family, friends, or even the beauty of the earth again." Slowly, she turned away and walked to the row she had been standing before, taking her place once again. The pair turned towards each other, grabbing each others hands. Slowly they began walking away, until they couldn't be seen. Another check on the dramatically important clipboard.

Profitable Prophet

The day was disturbing, to say the least.

Darker clouds were gathering somewhere in the west, covering over the bright glare of the moon with the evil eye of the devil. Heavens, what premonitions would come to fruition underneath such a dark and evil night? His eyes squinted as the sun became obscured behind a layer of thunderous clouds, the rolling crack of noise in the distance a foreboding omen that made him snap the blinds to the window closed in a hurry. It was a little later than he had anticipated that he had simply walked in to the door, tired and irritated - it hadn't exactly been the best day of his life.

Joshua, a child of God and sin, had been tempted.

It had started out as such a simple wish, staring down glumly over the railing of the bridge and wishing his hardest for some ounce of skill. He spent so much time belittling himself that it simply did not matter what skill he currently possessed; there was merely more that could be accomplished in such a short time as mortal life. His violin was his treasure to the human race that had treated him so poorly during his younger life, creating symphonies inside of his head that he had not the skill or the time to write or play. You will not become a composer, a lackluster and lazy 'artist' of music, he could hear his father's voice in his head even now. Music is for the socially deficient - retreating to their so called 'paradise' within meaningless sound. The voice of God is the only words that you will hear coming from this house, music or not.

No, it made little to no sense to Joshua why his father had despised the idea of music. He had been a quiet man - dark hair streaked with gray and a pair of demanding dark eyes. His mother had been beautiful, to say the least, but she sported the same fanatic views as her husband, perhaps even more so. It seemed that even in death, their condescending spirits kept him from achieving the one and true dream that he had always wanted, prayed for, waited for. He was simply not good enough to succeed in the world as a violinist, or so that was what he thought. Joshua sighed, pushing back blond hair from his face. He was a man of average build with average-looking features, usually clad in neatly ironed and cared for dress-clothing, according to where he worked. For too long had he shared the desk in a tiny hot box with his annoying fellow employees - he wanted more.

And so it came to be that he had been tempted.

He remembered the surface of the water rippling fantastically, spilling outwards a beautiful face grinning joylessly, without heart, merely in the mirror of malice. Her soft dark hair surrounded her features in beautiful waves, and to him she had offered a dainty hand, whispering devilish promises that he had never heard in his wildest dreams. Joshua remembered the edge of a beautiful black violin surfacing above the water, and placing the bow gently to the strings, the succubus from hell began to play. His tears had hit the surface of the rioting river from the beautiful sound that she had created, but something in her gaze had revolted him, turning him back from the edge. Joshua had not missed the desperate look for freedom flowing from her eyes as clear as the hate in them.

He shouldered his coat, sliding it up onto thin shoulders and buttoning it a little, just over halfway. He'd long since abandoned his attire from earlier, but the woman in the river haunted him forever with her pleading eyes and beautiful music. God, how he wished he could play like that...sad enough to make a grown man cry, sweet enough to rouse the hearts of the men who wandered the streets around him. The door locked behind him as he started back toward the bridge, wandering and listless. He was a distressed soul that cried out for help to the Heavens, but he was never sure that the help he asked for would ever come. It had been just recently that he had regained his faith at the sighting of the she-demon, and even then...he doubted so greatly the appearance of an 'angel' or perhaps the aforementioned 'God' that his faith was merely a hand that he could clutch tightly to for help.

If it was one thing Joshua knew well now, it was fear.

ZACHARY JOHN BULLOCK

Tempted by the dark...

Zach wandered around in the gardens of Heaven, simply getting used to his new home. He had heard tell the Lucifer was going to be coming to Heaven for his birthday upon God's invitation. Zach never knew much about Satan while he was growing up but based on everyone else's reactions to the news, it couldn't be a good thing that he was coming.

Zach sighed and wandered towards the training grounds, where he saw a burning tree. "Gabriel must have lost his temper again..." Zach muttered to himself as he pulled out his twin katanas. He looked around the grounds and found a line up of fake Devil's Advocates and started hacking them to pieces.

After all the Advocate dummies were destroyed Zach looked around and saw that the sky had darkened a bit. He had been out there for a lot longer than he thought. Zach groaned inwardly. He had for gotten about the banquet tonight. He jogged back to where he was living now then remembered he had wings just as he got there. He threw on a suit and went to the banquet.

The Sargent picked up Astril's report, along with several others. He was preparing them to be handed off to a messenger and taken to Lucifer. He had been impressed by the girl and the few others. The souls they used in practice were already damned of course, so there was no harm in the practices and exercises. He found out about an hour after the couple had disappeared they had leaped off a cliff into one of the many decorative pits filled with lava. He smiled at how stupid mortal souls could be, they hadn't even realized they were already dead. He signed a slip allowing the messenger access to the gates of the mansion his lord resided in. The Sargent could barely wait to hear what Lucifer had to say about the new recruits, knowing full and well one of them would be his successor. Retiring in hell was exactly as stressful and hate filled as it sounded, and he just hoped to get out of with all his limbs. Nodding, the messenger was off.
