Faolan winced at the smack to his head, but didn't react much other than to sigh, putting a hand to his chest, the claws retracted now. He understood. "I don't think it was my human blood, Tryst. My heart is weak. I'm . . . defective." He tilted his head to look at the other man. "I don't understand anything about those families of yours and I really don't know that I want to. My family is here, this carnival and, more specifically, Elle and our kids." He looked down, ears lowered. "If my mother hadn't stolen me away, gave her life, I wouldn't be here now, would I? I almost wish I'd known the woman, to thank her." He idly scratched at his bare chest, then looked at Trystan. "What was the ritual supposed to do for my father, anyway?"
"I like it, Crux. Very much. I like you, too," Zia sighed softly, moving so it could kiss at Crux's cheek and neck while being nuzzled. "Just promise me one thing. If you're taller than me when you change, don't leave me behind."

Trystan thrummed a low note, watching the other before falling on his back again, no longer interested in sitting up. "To them you might have been." He said lazily, covering his eyes with his hand and sighing. "Defective is a matter of perspective, dont let it get to your head." The half demon rubbed his head and then watched the sky, entertaining the idea of what could be beyond the stars. "I dont think you want to know. They aren't exactly the... nicest lot of people. You're right, the carnival is your family, but if you want answers, you wont find them here with Elle and your kids." Trystan shrugged, closing his eyes. He didn't really like how this talk was going, but what was said was said after all. "No you wouldn't. You'd be dead, or worse, some sort of zombified tool." Trystan looked over at the other and grinned like a cat. "It was supposed to give him more power somehow. Like I said, I dont know. Rituals can do various things, and since I dont know which specific one it was, I cant make any assumptions. Only the heads of the houses might have that kind of information, and I'm not about to pry." Turning his head back to the sky, Trystan puffed a sigh. "All I know is that he wanted to overthrow the head families, and become the top dog. Didn't work out now, did it?"
Continuing the motion now that he knew Zia like it, Crux thrummed a bit in a soft content. "I'm glad... I like you too, Zia. Very much so." The Proto turned its head towards the other when it asked him one thing. Something that vaguely resembled a chuckle came from his throat at the others words, and it leaned in, enjoying the warmth of Zia. "I will never leave you behind." He said in a comfortable thrum. "Promise. Just... dont leave me behind either."

Fao nodded. "I guess it's hard to wrap my head around my own father wanting to kill me." He got another beer and took a long drink, then looked up at the sky, ears drooping a little. "Trystan? What will he do if he knows I'm alive? I mean, if I was to go looking for answers, what would I have to be expecting?"
Zia clung to the other Essentic, hugging Crux as hard as it could. "Never leaving you behind, either." It moved its wings to wrap them as best it could around Crux as well, feathers and cards drifting to the ground around them.

Trystan glanced at the other, cocking a brow. "Why is it so hard to wrap your head around?" He paused and whistled. "Just two different worlds one in their own I guess. Where I come from, family members trying to kill you is as common as taking a shower if you're that unlucky." He shrugged, lucky that he'd never been almost slaughtered by his own kin before. "If he knows you're alive?" The man hummed in thought. "Who knows. You were his first born. But the families figure that he really must hate you - so it wouldn't be a surprise if you were found in a situation with a gun to your head." The demon closed his eyes and hummed a bit. "If you go looking for answers, tell me first. And dont go alone. I swear to god, if you mess with the wrong people, they wont hesitate to bring out a gun." He looked over at the other, the serious manner he was taking on almost unnatural for him to be using. "Some of the families are more lenient then the others. But if you go looking in the wrong places, you'll be dead before you can say my name."
Crux hugged the other back, not realizing that perhaps this was straying from his original purpose. However, human emotions felt good, and blinded his logical judgement on the matter. "Good.... Is it alright to be selfish like this though?" He asked hesitantly, enjoying the warmth of the other as he fell into a content state, wrapped in Zias arms and wings.

"Believe me, Tryst, I don't even know that I want to dig. I don't want the man coming after me for something I had no control over as an infant. If I need answers, I'll tell you first. No worries on that." Faolan looked at Trystan. "Has he ever tried looking for me before? It's not that I wanna meet him exactly, but I don't want him comin' at me through my family or the people here, you know?"
Zia sighed happily. "Sometimes selfish is good. I don't feel like sharing you or this feeling with anyone else." It moved away and looked toward Faolan as if suddenly aware the other two men were discussing something dangerous. Twisting a bit out of Crux's arms, he leaned to the side, one hand on the ground and the other going back to its wings. Eyes closed and brow furrowed, it plucked a card from its wings. Looking back it slowly opened its eyes and looked at the card. The Devil.
The alter looked back at its owner, something unreadable in its eyes. "Crux, I think there's a storm coming."

Snickering at the others words, Trystan tilted his head back, his eyes barely open as he stared at the endless sky. There was something off in his tone when he spoke next. "Thats good to hear. I dont think you could just step into that world and get away with it." He acknowledged, twisting his neck a bit and glancing at Faolan for a moment. "Not that I've heard, but I wouldn't doubt that people have been here before, and if they've seen those tattoos, then there are already rumors flying. My family specializes in murder..." Trystan glanced away, brushing a hand through his hair. "Other families specialize in keeping the secrets and rumors of our kin." Trystans eyes narrowed in the slightest. "I'd be careful, with who you show those tattoos to. Because if news leaks out to the wrong people, even the vaguest of rumors, you'll be in for hell. And not just you, but everyone connected to you." Trystan sighed and leaned back. "Lets just hope you dont flaunt those tattoos every day or so, and I'm sure you'll be at least semi-safe."
Crux hummed at the response, glancing over as Zia moved to glance over. Something had been wearing on the back of his mind, and now that he was paying attention to it, he could tell. Trystan was stressed out, and not in the best of moods. He hadn't been paying attention to the conversation, so he didn't know what was going on, but as he watched Zia catch a card, his scanner glittered dangerously. He had read the book, he knew what the Devil meant. At the mention of a storm coming, he tilted his head towards Zia, and then over to Trystan. He barely knew anything about his master, and this was one of the times when he felt utterly in the dark. "Then perhaps it is time to start preparing for the rain?" He commented in a far off voice, as if he was contemplating something of his own.
Something...

Faolan was quiet a long moment, drinking his beer. He looked at Trystan, holding up a hand to ward the other off. "Look, don't hit me, but . . . there ain't a person that's been around Farstep enough that ain't seen my back. I dance shirtless and don't bother with shirts most of the other time, either."
Zia nodded and finally looked back at Crux, rainbow eyes wide. "Yes." That one word said so much on the situation on the horizon.

Trystan wanted to smack him. Refraining from it, he just sighed in an almost defeated manner, and fell back against the plush grass, wondering what to tell Faolan. Something other then 'you're doomed.' Pausing, The man closed his eyes and crossed his hands behind his head. "Then you'd best figure out what you're going to be doing from now on." He said, trying to control his voice so he wouldn't shout. "Demons aren't as obvious, especially in a crowd. A trained one knows how to hide - and the only ones not trained aren't alive right now." With a scowl, Trystan tried not to glare at Faolan. Why hadn't anyone told him about his damn tattoos? What if someone came after him? "And every demon knows ritual symbols when they see them. I dont know if your dads already heard this news, but once he does - or decides to act on it - you'd better have a damn good plan, Faolan, because even I dont know what he's going to do." Trystan paused, opening his eyes, the black sclera glittering instead of the previous white. "And trust me, he wont be coming to have a tea party and congratulate you on having kids. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he was rather pissed off."
Crux glanced over at the other, wondering just what lay in store for the two of them. A slightly thoughtful hum came from his throat as he examined Trystan and Faolan, wondering just how much the mutt would reveal. His entire being was made up of things taught to him by the Chevalier Family, so he knew just how the entirety of the demon Families worked... Now it was just a matter of how much he might reveal. Looking back at Zia, he nodded. "Perhaps this meeting should draw to a close... It seems both of our owners are not fairing so well."

Faolan looked down, grumbling, He suddenly felt foolish and stupid and wished very much at the moment he had on a shirt. Knowing that his life and the lives of those he cared for were in danger because he'd been careless pushed aside the thoughts that it wasn't his fault on not knowing since no one had ever thought to tell him about the tattoos or his family. He looked up at Trystan. "I don't think anyone in the carnival ever knew much about what I was or the tattoos. I'd asked before, but they didn't say anything. Is there a chance, any at all, that the demonkind still don't know about me yet? I don't have any plans. I'm not, I mean I wasn't raised as demonkind. I don't know what to prepare for."
Zia nodded quietly, looking at Crux with a bit of saddness. "I was hoping he'd never find out about his family, but it was inevitable. I'm glad Trystan and you are so close with us, there's no way I could protect him. I'm too weak."

Trystan puffed his cheeks in mild amusement throughout the entire gloom and doom of the situation at his friends next words. "I thought we already went through this." He declared with a half shrug. "I cant ******** you sideways. Remember? I think its impossible...ish." The demon grinned lazily and let out a thrum as the severity of the situation came back to him. "You never know. Just because they didn't say anything doesn't mean they dont know. And there are always secrets, no matter how tight you guys might be. I dont think Keagan would've taken you in without at least knowing something about you sooner or later." Trystan tilted his head back, eyes closing a bit. "The chance is one in a million." He said evenly enough. "Especially with some of the families. I wouldn't have put it past them to notice by now. I'm surprised there isn't a bounty on your head yet." Trystan sighed in a rather irrate fashion. "You'd better start making some, just incase. Once news reaches your father - and theres no doubt in my mind that it will - anythings possible." Trystan tilted his head back, examining the sky. "Prepare for the worst, thats all you can do." He glanced over at Faolan with a slight grin. "Notably, thats the one amusing thing about us. We never plan for anything concrete. Just prepare for the unexpected."
Crux watched the other, wishing that somehow he could take away Zia's sadness. But empathy was beyond him, so he simply settled for awkwardly turning his head to the other two again. He couldn't say anything to comfort Zia, but at least he could talk with him. "It was inevitable, was it?" He commented in a listless tone as he picked up on the conflicted emotions flooding Trystan. "I am glad we are close too...." At the mention of protection, some uncertainty hovered in Crux's mind. He could... only act under Trystans orders when it came to that. That was right... He'd almost forgot. Crux was Trystans protection, that was his purpose. If Trystan told him he couldn't help Zia and his family, his entire make up would be compromised. Being loyal to the man who he was tied to, or the Essentic that made him feel the way he did. Crux fell increasingly silent. "Everything is weak in the beginning. Everything has strong points as well." Crux stood straighter. "But yes, physical protection is my strong point, not yours."

"Ah, s**t. I figured as much. If the people here never told me, they probably thought it would protect me not to know. They're good folk, Tryst, they wouldn't keep something from me out of harmful intents," Fao sighed, then looked at the other. "No one's made an attempt on my life yet, so that's a small blessing. I'm not a fighter, Trystan. I won't be able to defend myself or anyone if one of the families comes for me or mine. I'm really open to suggestions." He ran a hand through his hair, then looked up as a thought occurred to him, ears going up a bit. "What if I sent word to him that I wanted to talk? I never knew what stock I was from before, it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that I'd want to know the man that sired me, right? I could try to persuade him to leave me and my family alone, that I want no part of what he's got going on and I won't get in his way. Would it work?"
The alter leaned into Crux's side, looking at him. "He'd have learned eventually, yes. I suppose at least now he can deal with it rather than be surprised." It moved a hand, stroking along Crux's arm with its fingertips. "You could teach me something of how to protect him, couldn't you?"

Trystan shrugged, not sure how to respond to any of the first half of what Faolan was saying. The carnival was a good place, as far as he was concerned, but trusting every single one of them sounded a bit unorthadox. "A small blessing, but I hate to say that it probably wont last. And if you aren't a fighter now, then just learn. Thats how everyone becomes one, after all." He glanced over at the other, crossing his arms behind his head and letting his obsidian hair hide the scars. "You're half demon at least, its in your blood. The least you should do is learn how to properly protect you and your family. Or get the hell out of Vargash." Turning, he opened his mouth into a slight yawn, staring at the now pitch black sky, only lit by stars and carnival lights. "Sent word to him?" Trystan repeated, trying to hide the shock in his voice. Who the hell did that? Not him, for one thing. "Oh yes, it wouldn't be totally unreasonable. Hi, Dad, I know you tried to kill me when I was baby but maybe we got off on the wrong foot and I'd like to try again. I'm also married with kids on the way." Trystan cocked a brow at the other. "Something tells me it wont work." He said lazily, rolling away from Faolan and onto his side. "But Que Sera Sera, what will be will be. If you want to try it, thats your choice entirely." He paused, sliding his eyes closed. "Persuasion never ended well in this corner of the world of ours."
Crux watched the alter, letting him lean against his body without much hesitance. "Perhaps. It must come as a shock." He admitted, not knowing much of the emotions taking hold of both Trystan and Faolan at the current moment. When Zia started to stroke his arm and talk to him about teaching things, Crux glanced over, thrumming a thought. "I could, yes." He said, nodding. "As long as Trystan allows for it, I could teach you basic defense. I'm not sure what else you would want to learn however. And it takes awhile - I'm only exceeding in it because of my purpose."

"Oh, I can fight if I have to, lad, I just . . . don't prefer it," Faolan said, looking out at the darkness stretching across the field, one ear cocked back to listen to the sounds of the carnival behind them. "Pretty sure I won't be affective, but it might give time for Elle and the kids to get away, assuming I don't keel over from the heart condition." He shrugged, taking a sip of beer. "Okay, so maybe sending word to my father isn't the best idea, but it's the only one I got. I ain't running from the man. My life is here at Farstep and I won't let someone I never met chase me off of it on some chance he might come after me, assuming he even still cares." He rested a hand on Trystan's shoulder, quiet a long moment before speaking again. "I'll wait and see what happens, I think. It's been this long and he ain't come for me yet. Maybe he's given up on bothering with me. Could have other things to worry on. Till someone comes for me, I'll just keep livin' as I have." He looked at Trystan. "Unless you have a better idea, hinny."
Zia shrugged a skinny shoulder, still leaned against Crux's side, feeling safe against the solid body of its friend. "I'm not sure if Fao even knows what shock is. He's pretty relaxed about everything." It looked up at the proto. "I'm not sure how much of a fighter I can be, but any ideas on how to be a really good distraction during a fight to help Faolan get the upper hand would be good, maybe."

"Do I really look like a 'lad'?" Trystan commented dryly, staring down at himself with a bit of amusement. It made him feel young, but he was older then Faolan, and that one in itself made him feel a bit better. "Do not keel over from a heart condition, because chances are, you'll either die or get kidnapped." Trystan stopped and snorted at the idea. "Now that would be eventful." He commented, already knowing he'd probably attempt some sort of suicide mission for Faolan, should that happen. Then again, his family would probably forbid him. Ahaha, that was when the s**t would hit the fan, eh? Trystan couldn't bring himself to think about who he would choose. "I wont tell you to run, but I'm not encouraging you to get in contact with him." Trystan said, his eyes glittering dangerously. "Heads, and former heads, of the families are the worst of the lot. They have to know exactly how to run a family, and they also have the guts to do everything horrible that everyone else is afraid of. Your dad will not be happy to hear about you, I can assure you that." Trystan said lowly, turning to the other when a hand was rested on his shoulder. He rolled over in the grass, staring up at Faolan. "Just be careful." He said, even though those words were ones he'd never go by. "Dont do anything stupid."
Crux looked at the other, a hum on his lips as he watched Zia. Safety, huh...? "I see. Thats... strange." He commented wryly, wondering if the other man would ever experience shock. He knew Trystan surely did. Nodding at the other Protos conclusion, Crux hummed a bit. "Is that so..." He spoke softly, scanner glittering a bit. "Well then, I'll ask Trystan if it would be alright for me to teach you. Hand to hand combat might be a good thing to learn... However, I specialize in knives, so it might be a bit strange at first." Crux tilted his head to the side. "If you are willing, Zia.."

Faolan smacked Tryst lightly on the shoulder, chuckling. "Oi, I ain't callin' you a boy, now. It's an affectionate term, hinny." He moved so he was looking down at the other man more. "Well, I don't plan to be keelin' over, but I don't have much control over it now, eh. Hopin' not to be in a position where that comes up anyway." He grinned, eyes twinkling from the carnival lights. "La, hinny, when have you known me to be stupid?"
Zia looked at Crux, a somewhat cunning smile slowly spreading across its face. "I'd be willing to do anything you wanted, Crux. Anything." It left it at that, the words hanging between them and full of double meanings and many promises.
