Ylaine managed to compose herself and straightened, hands on her lap, to observe the trick, her expression cool and disdainful. Miguel walked back towards her, motioning for Magdelen to follow. He quietly thought to himself that Magdelen, though sweet, was probably equal Ylaine on the weirdness scale. A hotel full of miscreants and a pair of odd girls. This was nothing like the life he had imagined for himself. Even if he had possessed much imagination, not in his wildest dreams would he have conceived of this.
From the knife block Miguel took three knives, spinning one in his hand. "Now," he said, looking to Magdelen, "what do you suppose is the most important thing about a knife?"

She was apparently doing lots of following, which didn't really bother her since hey, he had fruit and now spinning knives. Seemed kinda dangerous not to listen (she hid a smile behind her oversized sleeves).
"The balance," she said in the tones of a question, thinking of a movie she'd seen. "Because if the blade is heavier than the handle, the handle might break, or something? Or... how sharp it is. I dunno!"

Miguel broke into a genuinely happy grin, charmed to find a child so astute. "Very good! The balance! The sharpness is the second-most important thing, but one can work wonders with a dull blade when it is well-balanced. These here, these are both balenced and sharp."
It happened so quickly and suddenly that it seemed a casual afterthought, Miguel's eyes flicking to the fruits and his hand moving before his words could even fully register. THCK! The knife thudded into the cutting board, splitting the orange evenly. And then, a mere second later-- THCK! THCK! the peach and cherry followed in rapid succession.

Being a perfectionist, Magdelen was so happy to hear that she was right that she almost missed the trick. Luckily, she didn't, but only because she whipped her head around fast enough to catch it. For a moment, she only stared, white eyes huge in her rather peakish face. "That. Was. Amazing," she breathed, "That's so cool." Glancing back Ylaine, she spent a moment wondering if it was okay to say that, but very reluctantly she decided that this was too cool to be Very Adult about so she approached the fruits.
Careful to avoid the knife, she rolled one half of the peach one way and then the other. The cut was so clean! "Where did you learn to do that," she asked, turning to look at Miguel. "I thought people only did knife tricks like this in action movies."

In all the months they had known one another, Miguel had never seen fit to show Ylaine that. Ylaine's hand rose to her chest. Her heart was fluttering like a moth's wing. She allowed herself this momentary emotional indulgence because Miguel was focused on Magdelen. He answered her, "I've had many years to practice," with a wry chuckle in his voice. It had been centuries, in fact. He turned to look at Ylaine and she so quickly dropped her hand she hit it against the edge of the counter and inhaled sharply.

"Man," she said enviously, "I could never learn to do that, not in a million years."
Magdelen looked at Ylaine when she gasped and automatically asked, "Are you all right?" It was a question everyone seemed to ask her every time she sighed or had a strange expression, so she had gradually adopted the practice too. Except at school, when she was away from her father - where she wouldn't see Ylaine again, since the other girl was in the level above her. So it was all right to let down her guard. Really it was... right?
It made her a little sad, that she would never see Ylaine or Miguel again except if she was very lucky. Girls like her, though, were not lucky at all, not that she had ever noticed in her whole entire life, all six months of it. She self-consciously touched her bandaged fingers to the back of her neck. "Who taught you how to do that? Did you teach yourself?"

Even if Magdelen had given Ylaine chance to answer, she wouldn't have, fixing Magdelen with an angry glare. The hand was of little consequence. It did not hurt. Ylaine had merely been surprised by the impact. She felt a hateful disdain rising in her chest, but it was as much for herself as it was for Magdelen.
Miguel, of course, was unphased, remaining cool and charming as ever as he pulled the knives from the cutting board. "Lots and lots of practice." He smiled at Magdelen and slipped the knives back into the block from whence they had come. He took the two halves of the cherry and ate one, holding the other out to Ylaine with a twinkle in his eye. It was the slice of olive all over again.
Ylaine delicately took the cherry half and popped it in her mouth, making a disdainful face, but it could not totally hide the smile at the corners of her lips and Miguel chuckled. He pointed at Magdelen. "And a peach for a peach, as they say."

The glare surprised her - but then she thought maybe Ylaine hadn't known it was just a habit, or perhaps it hadn't really hurt. Sometimes when she dropped something, Magdelen said ow even though it hadn't touched her at all. After a moment, she thought not - Ylaine seemed like she was too smart for that. She shrugged to herself, deciding it probably didn't matter.
It seemed like practice would be the only answer she'd get. Well, that was all right. Everything took practice, after all, so maybe one day she'd be able to do something as cool one day. She stepped back a bit and squished her ego down - she was rather used to being the center of attention in small groups, but she could grow up for long enough that Ylaine wouldn't have a reason to glare at her again.
"A peach for a-" she repeated, her attention pulled back to Miguel and Ylaine. She knew well enough what the saying meant, but the shock was that he was pointing at her and not Ylaine. Deciding that confusion was probably the best route to take, she picked up both halves to the fruit and brought it over to the counter, offered one half to Ylaine and the other to Miguel with a puzzled shrug.

Ylaine snatched the peach half, furiously disappointed Miguel thought Magdelen was sweet. Of course, the fact that Magdelen was offering them peach halves (and Ylaine snatching one away) only proved the point. Ylaine fiercely bit down on her half, sweet juice filling her mouth. A drop trickled down her chin.
Miguel only laughed and held his hand up. "No, you have it!" Magdelen truly was too much, an absolute darling of a child. The way children were supposed to be, nothing like Ylaine had been when she came to the hotel. Not that Miguel wanted Ylaine to change. It was just nice to be around people every now and then who weren't quite to emotionally screwed up by their lives yet. Miguel glanced at the hotel's resident sourpuss. "Ah, you have some--" He offered Ylaine the washcloth from his apron band.
Snatching the apron from Miguel's hand just as she had snatched the peach from Magdelen's, Ylaine hopped down from her stool. She would endure this indignity no longer. "Why is it you only know those idioms which apply to members of the female persuasion?" she demanded of Miguel, stomping towards the kitchen entrance. "I hope the pair of you are very happy together with your childish games!"

She just didn't understand Ylaine, thought Magdelen. "Thank you," she said politely to Miguel, and she watched the other girl quietly over the peach for a moment, her eyes a bit wide. That sort of behavior... well, she exhibited it, but only when things were going very wrong. They did so often, she thought as she took a politely sized bite from her half of the peach.
Her resentment of being called childish was anything but reasonable, but she kept her mouth shut despite it and watched Ylaine leave in silence. Wasn't she a girl, too? The idiom could apply to her and Magdelen had felt as shortly as a minute ago that maybe the other girl deserved to be called a peach more than she had, but... She sighed silently, looking rather downcast for a moment. "I'd better go home. Dad will be wondering where I am." More like freaking out and going to get Asmadai to call her cell phone, which- she was surprised to think of it -hadn't rung at all and she had to have been out of school for a while. Perhaps her father was busy. That wouldn't bother her.
"Thank you for showing me the knife trick, sir," she said.

"Don't let Ylaine get to you," said Miguel with a sigh. "It's just the way she is." Then he smiled, to offer encouragement and make clear that Ylaine's tantrum didn't actually mean anything. "I should probably get dinner going. It was a pleasure to meet you, Magdelen."

She smiled brightly and sketched a stunted bow - more like a nod, her upper body stayed stiff. "Bye," she said, and she hurriedly backed out of the kitchen. Even if Dad was busy, she still should get home.
