"Five is a hope. Just like we all hope to walk away with dragons one day, it can't always happen." But Inaari was fairly convinced that one day, they all would. Not all of the Candidates, but her friends. They were such strong people, any dragon could be proud to call them bonded! She was not so confident about her own skills, but had the conviction that if she wished hard enough, it would simply have to happen.

It dismayed her to have to think of sending Ryka off, however. It was true that those with firelizards were suddenly 'important' Pernese, and he was right. The relatively cheap trinket didn't help the situation one bit. Regretfully yet again, for the millionth time in a short span, she communicated forcefully the need that Ryka go fly up and perch on top of a stall, just to wait for them to come back. Perhaps she would enjoy watching the dancers? The green chirruped in what was a very disappointed way, before going between with a brush of her wingtips to show her displeasure. From hearing S'van, she knew that a full dragon was much worse, with a voice to tell you how it felt, and she couldn't help the guilt.

Inaari would have to secure another lovely treat, to reward the green for being a loyal, adoring friend in the turbulant transitional period of the Weyr. "There, she should stay away. And as for your payment, I'll help you as much as I can, you know that Okassis." She smiled pleasantly, and titled the brim of her hat a bit. The sunburn was worth the feel of the light on her face from time to time.

Saluting gratefully as the green left the pair, Okassis began walking forward more quickly. "Deal, then!" he grinned cheerfully, pushing ahead. He melded into the pace of the crowded Gather with the natural ease of one whose childhood was often spent in such places, navigating the rest of the way to the Weavercraft stalls.

It wasn't hard to find the cloth that Inaari must have spoken of - grudgingly, he had to admit, the Cotholder girl had an eye for quality. Even from where he stood, Okassis could tell that these wares were exceptional - certainly enough to justify the heavy price tag. "Hang back a bit, in case she recognizes you," he advised Inaari quickly, patting her shoulder, before moving in to engage the weaver.

He did his job, and he did it quickly. Rapid-fire negotiations passed between him and the woman manning the stall. It was probably rather fascinating, actually, to watch the trader's facial expressions fluctuate from grimace to grudging approval to hesitation to slow acceptance- "Eight marks?! Shards, that's just barely enough cloth to cover a herdbeast, why should I pay enough to buy one?!," "It is a good piece of cloth, and I do have a friend that would look awfully pretty in it... five marks, then," "Seven? I don't know, there's another stall down the way selling a darker color for five. I could offer five and a half, perhaps?," and finally, "Six... yes, well. Let me talk it over a moment. I think if we pool our marks, we can...."

Raising a hand to signal the harried merchant to wait, he turned to confer with Inaari again, eyes gleaming, face grinning. "Six marks even, and well worth the price."

Clapping her hands in sheer delight, she threw her arms around the taller Candidate, thanking him profusely with every breath. "Thank you thank you so much Okassis! Oh I can't wait to throw the patterns out!" Reaching up into the brim of her hat, she plucked the six marks from the lining, and flipped it back up onto her head smoothly. "Prevents stealing, you know? Nobody ever expects it there." Beaming beautifully, her left cheek was a smush of freckle, and the right was barely better.

As it was packaged and handed over, she stroked the wrapping of the bolt with reverent hands. It would be the finest gown she'd ever owned, and one day, when she Impressed her companion, she'd wear it. What was left over would be trimmed onto older, but perfectly useful gowns for a new look on a old item. Her father would be disappointed, but it would be well worth a Turn of fewer treats. Besides, if another clutch showed soon, she'd get marks from the Weyr instead!

Her father wouldn't mind that one bit. Clutching the parcel to her disappointingly flat chest, Inaari turned her personal sunbeam back on the Trader who'd made it all happen. "What can I do to repay you now?"

Okassis seemed pleased that his younger friend was so grateful for his assistance. Some people regarded his sort scornfully, the parasites upon Pern that lived off the hard work of others; but ah, there were moments like these where a Trader could prove his worth, and he loved every second of it! "See you put it to good use," he told her chidingly, "cloth like that isn't meant for socks." If only he were kidding, there were a couple people he'd known that needed such warning....

"You need to help me pick out a few presents," Okassis told her, smiling. "I've got a couple friends that couldn't come - S'van's the easy one, but one of the girls that Impressed blue, Zara? I thought I'd get her something, but I've not the dimmest idea what she'd like." Granted, he didn't know the Weyrling so well - but if a gift might get him a chance to know her better, then he should take the opportunity! "What do you think? Something nice, but not too expensive... say, half a mark...."

Trailing off, he eyed his comrade. Surely, a girl like Inaari must have some idea of what he could pick up!

"No, I don't think socks are much use at a Gather!" This one was just as silly as S'van, but then, they were always together. One had probably rubbed off on the other long, long ago. Nan had mentioned something about those two and rubbing, but Inaari really couldn't remember what. Lately, she had adamantly tried to block out any gossip concerning the newest brownrider. After finding herself with welling eyes not long after the Feast during a juicy piece of gossip, the blond had been shocked and wanted to avoid a repeat experience as often as possible.

Biting her lower lip in concentration, she thought of the two new riders. The girl, Zara, she had never truly met. But she had a flitt, didn't she? A flitt and a dragon would be a real handful these days. "For the girl, perhaps something to amuse her dragon or 'lizard? One or the other, both are very demanding I've found. Or perhaps a small bottle of lotion? I know many ladies who care a great deal about their skin." Indeed she did! For obvious reasons, this girl had never cared, but perhaps one day those lotions would be used well. "As for S'van...." Her mind swirled through options, weighing some, discarding others outright, when her eyes lit on a pale apron, the soft fabric fanning whenever a breeze trickled through.

"That's it!" She nearly bobbled her package as she seized Okassis again by the arm, and pointed with vigor. "He needs that."
PostPosted: Thu May 14, 2009 9:53 pm

"Lotion?" Okassis had echoed. Well, it was... practical, at least. And there were all sorts of scented oils out there that he knew some people preferred for the lizards in their lives, a cut above the stuff that the Weyr provided. The more he thought it over, the better he liked the idea. Yeah! A great way to say, congratulations on your good fortune, you poor sod; here, you'll be needing this....

Chuckling to himself, the trader declared, "That'll be great!", and took about two steps before Inaari had him by the arm again, pointing wildly at something....

Pastel.

And....

Somewhat frilly.

And....

For S'van?

For a moment, Okassis didn't know what to say. How could he know? There were so few times that the universe clicked like that, it was hard to know how a mere mortal man like himself was supposed to react. With a straight and somber face, he nodded - gently disentangled his arm, inquired as to the price of the apron. Producing a few coins from Shards-knew-where, he paid up for the apron, which he folded with the solemn respect one might treat a flag with, and returned to Inaari.

"Yes," he answered at last, simply and joyously, and continued on.

There was something in the young Holder lady that made her feel that S'van would only be horrified at their thoughtful gift. But the rest of her was overjoyed at the solemn purchase, and the care with which Okassis tucked it under his arm. Her joy and inner giggling brought a crooning dark green beauty out from between to sniff curiously at the paper-wrapped parcel before landing gently again on Inaari's shoulder. Deftly, she stroked the little flitt with unending affection, sending waves of gratefulness and happiness out towards the little thing, until it was nearly purring.

Hanging back with her sweetheart, Inaari did however, manage to catch her companion buying what seemed to be a small elegantly packaged scented oil. It would be a perfect present for a new rider with an extra handful. Not enough for the dragon, but certainly enough to make both of the scaly partners feel special. As the fuzzyheaded young man wandered back over, still carefully handling the inspired purchase, she congratulated him on his thoughtfulness. "I use the stuff in spades for Ryka, but I never thought to buy some for another! Very good, though I guess I should've expected it, hunh?"

Eager to deliver the gift and particpate sans parcel in the delights the Gather had to offer, Inaari couldn't wait to get back up to the Weyr. "Perhaps we can take a moment to deliver the most special gift to S'van?"
PostPosted: Thu May 14, 2009 10:22 pm

Okassis nodded eagerly to her evaluation. The oil was a stroke of genius, really; he'd done good in asking Inaari for her input, and would have to keep her in mind the next time he went gift-shopping!

The trader, naturally, had had the foresight to bring along a satchel with him to the Gather. In fact, there were some things in it already - doses of his lice cure, just in case he found someone to make a sale to while he was here. Arranging them neatly in the bottom of the bag, he layered the apron over it, then the package of oil on top of that. Hankering down by the satchel, he blinked at his companion. "Is there anyone giving rides now?" Okassis asked, a bit surprised at how eager Inaari was. Of course, he couldn't say that he wasn't looking forward to it, also - how S'van's face would light up (a bright red), his mouth would fall open (in horror), he'd lose his words (too distraught to speak)....

Oh, shards, if only there was an easy ride! But it didn't seem too likely, so the best he could do was offer, "Maybe it'd be easier if I just carried your cloth for you, and we can give S'van his present after Gather."

"Oh! Oh yes...I forgot how far we are from the Weyr! When I lived in the Hold, all I had to do was dash back up the hill. It took some time, but you could always be back in time for the dancing!" Biting her lip again in thoughtfulness, she lightly stroked a hand over the parcel, before tucking it securely under her arm and shaking her head with a smile. "Thank you, but I can't have you carrying things for me, that's just not right. I bought it, I'll gladly hold onto it. It's not very heavy, at any rate."

Suddenly inspired, the blond perked immediately. "How about I buy you a juice and a snack? It's the least I can do for your help, and then you don't have to worry about me hurting myself with such a burden." She giggled at the phrasing, and started to lead the way towards the food stalls. Follow or not, she at least could sit down and see if there was anyone else about!
PostPosted: Thu May 14, 2009 10:42 pm

"Less heavy for me than you!" Okassis put in his token protest, but was already closing up the bag and slinging it over his shoulder. It was true that he'd have little trouble carrying it, - he was built more like a herdbeast than a flitt, - but that didn't mean he had to insist on useless points of honor.

And much like the creature he'd just mentally compared himself to, he began ambling after the freckled girl, all but pricking up his ears at the promise of food. "Well, I could hardly let you go unsupervised without making sure you can manage that heavy load," he quipped cheerfully. Never mind that, as S'van knew already, Okassis was a bottomless pit that never turned down a free meal!

Gathers were clearly The Best Thing Ever.

Though Nandeli was a child of the Weyr through and through, she still found great pleasure in these kinds of events. How could she not? It was like a giant Hatching Feast, filled with Weyrfolk and Holdfolk alike. The gossip levels ere just off the charts, and since she had never limited herself to just Weyr gossip, the opportunity to learn all about the secret life of Holdfolk was just too tempting. She'd made her rounds early that morning before the sun was too hot, helping set up in exchange for a few little tidbits. So far, she'd learned nothing of value, but that was to be expected. She hadn't visited the food tent yet.

That was where the Nose had parked herself come midday snack time. She half sat on one of the tables, chatting with one of the women in the stall. Apparently, food choice could tell you a lot about a man's sexual preferences. She would have to scrutinize S'van's diet further before she decided if the woman's theories were worth anything. Or perhaps she should test Marko. He would be a good choice. Movement towards the stall caught her eye, and she turned to look up at Inaari and Okassis.

"Well look who it is! Getting a bit hungry? A word from the wise, I'd be avoiding the spiderclaw cakes at the end of that there row." She tipped her head to indicate the direction. "Apparently they've dropped a few and put them back."

Hah! Of course Nan would be at the food tent, Okassis thought with a grin. Best place to catch tired Gather-goers off their guard and pump them for information. Come to think of it, it wasn't so surprising that all the gossip in the Weyr ended up in the kitchen - it was a sort of congregation center. Funny that Okassis had never thought of things like that before, he'd always depended on the marketplace for rumor.

Steering over to join with the infamous gossip-monger (simply assuming that Inaari would be coming along), Okassis grinned. "Must be fardling good spidercakes, if a bit of dirt didn't ruin them," he mused. "Either that, or very lazy bakers. You aren't spending your whole day in here, are you, Nose?" The trader sounded chiding, but there was a bit of a gleam in his eye, that look he had when he was stalling. The trader knew something that was just going to make Nandeli's day, all he needed was the right timing to bring it up....

Miss Cherie
Kagiya shook her head, recognizing the universal signal for 'You are in trouble, missy'. "No, mama sent someone, but they got lost." That was about as much truth as S'kagi was going to get on the subject. It wasn't a lie, truly. They had gotten lost. Giya had gotten them lost. Or lost them. The nice man had wandered off, too... maybe he was looking for a hat to cover his strange bald head! Poor man! Tugging at a braid, the weyrbrat looked up at her daddy again. She was now convinced that that was what he was. Just then, her nose caught the scent of the pies again, and she glanced wistfully over at the display of bubbly pies.

S'kagi heaved a sigh at the child's behavior, trying to think of how best to find, and turn her back to her proper caretaker, though by the sound of it he might need to meet with her mother again at some point, if only to find out if there was anything else he should know. "Hungry?" he asked, reluctantly, fishing for another coin. He would still rather think that she was not his daughter, if only because of the vast complication she had the potential to bring to his life, especially since either from her mother or someone else had told her he was a bronze rider. Let alone finding out he might have a seven year old daughter, the last he needed was an ENTITLED seven year old daughter.

"Or they're just think nobody will notice a few grains of sand in their food," Nan replied, not believing in the bit about lazy bakers. This was food for a Gather! They should be proud of their work, despite having dropped it in the sand. There was a fine line between sand in your food and sand that a million people had stepped on in your food. On Ista you learned to tell the difference, or you just enjoyed the taste of millions of shoes in your spidercakes.

The girl stuck her tongue out at Okassis' quip, though her characteristic cheeky grin was back on her face moments later. "Not the whole day, my good Trader. Even the Nose needs some sustenance. Besides, everyone knows the most exciting news is heard by the food staff. Like, for example, there's a girl at this Gather who's apparently trying to see out her future husband. Apparently she's a picky one! I'd be careful if I were you. She might try and snatch you up!" Nandeli laughed at her own joke. "But surely you didn't come over to talk to me just because I was here?"

"Well, it might by that I came over to talk to you because you intrigued me with your talk of tainted spidercake," Okassis began slowly, "or... it might be that I came over to talk to you because I met a very interesting little Weyrgirl today who was trying to find her daddy, who has the same pretty eyes as a very important Wingleader. And thanks in small part to yours truly," he smiled with false modesty, even though he was very aware that his part had been quite small, "the two of them met, not even half a candlemark ago."

Smirking, Okassis crossed his arms. He had no doubts that he'd hit on a perfect topic to catch Nan's interest - and the fact that he'd withheld names was going to drive her crazy, he knew. He thought he'd probably lead her on for a while, drop a few hints, see how long it took for her to pick out the names involved. She'd figure it out eventually, sure; but at least Okassis could have his fun until then!
