Ren clenched the rock hard before he attempted to channel chakra through it. He looked at the rock with great concentration.
"HHHMMmmm.."
Ren pumped a little more chakra into the rock.
Come on come on.
Ren applied too much chakra into the rock as it blew up in front of his face. He coughed at the dust and small pebbles that flew up at him while waving a hand.

"MAN that's not ok."
Ren smacked the dust of his clothes as he grabbed the next rock. He tried the same idea. Inserting chakra into the rock and trying to shape it from the inside.
Let's pretend my chakra is like water, and I can focus it's flowing path through the rock...
Ren sat there and closed his eyes as he tried to apply the idea.

The rock split in half when Ren finally attempted to shape it. He tossed the rock aside and grabbed another.
Ok maybe I'll try again and if it doesn't work then I'll try shaping it from the outside.
Ren focused chakra into the rock again and had split it in half again after a few minutes of trying. This method wasn't working.
"I'll have to carve it from the outside, then."

A Day Later...Ren had fallen asleep in the zen garden. All 100 rocks in the basket were gone. There were broken fragments of the rocks scattered everywhere.
He wasn't able to make a single rock-shuriken.
Ren was snoring very loud as he was laying on his back, arms outstretched.

Kaimen had walked into the garden to see Ren.
"GET UP!" Kaimen yelled kicking him.

"OUCH!"
The pain from the kick felt real, it wasn't Meesha who kicked him this time.
Kaimen's voice confirmed his fears.
SHI- caught sleeping on the job, what a terrible moment..!
Ren got up in an instant and saluted Kaimen.
"I couldn't get the chakra control down right, Kaimen-sama! Please give me pointers!"
Ren pleaded as he clasped his hands together.

"Yes, I could tell." He said surveying and pointing to the different rock fragments.
"You're not thinking like the earth. You see, earth Style tsuchi is different from Mizu, Kaze, Ho, and Rai, in the sense that we manipulate living things. Or things that nurture life. Sit down."
Kaimen picked up a stone, crossed his legs, and began to meditate while speaking.
"The essential idea is not to place your chakra into the objects rapidly if you don't have a feel for it. Instead, place your chakra into the earth, and from the earth, place your chakra into the stone. Turn on your byakugan and you can see what I mean."
If Ren followed Kaimen's instructions, he would see Kaimen's chakra flow out through the base of his body, into the earth, and then into the stone in his hand.

Ren activated his Byakugan as soon as Kaimen instructed him to do so. He watched Kaimen's chakra flow out into the ground and back into the stone that he was holding. Ren was still confused.
"I don't understand. You inserted your chakra into both the earth below you and the rock in your hand. What's the point of that?"

"The Earth has chakra in itself. You are essentially, taking, and using this chakra, to aid you."

Ren kept his focus in between the earth and the rock that Kaimen held.
"So then how do you shape it after you get the aid from the earth's chakra?
You absorb the earth's chakra into that rock?"

Ren walked over to the side to get a good sized rock before coming back and sitting down Indian style.
He sat there with his Byakugan still activated as he concentrated his own chakra into the earth below. Ren held the rock out and tried to meditate.
Bring it through.. up to the rock?

"Good, have 150 shurikens done when I return. I'll be going on an adventure soon."

Several hours laterRen had made his first rock shuriken, although primitive in it's last state. The rock wasn't sharp enough to cut anyone, if anything it would just bounce off an enemy. He had to go through 100 more rocks just to make something that resembled a shuriken. There were broken pieces of rocks everywhere.
