"No." Zara shook her head, a slight smile playing at the edge of her mouth. No, she'd learned that lesson a long time ago. If you picked out a certain egg, you got disappointed more often than not. "I've seen more than enough evidence that the dragon chooses the rider, so I'm not about to ignore it. We influence things by being who we are, but anything else? That's up to the dragon."

Figuring that Zara would be the one to know, Okassis listened carefully, and nodded when she was done. Leaning against the rock wall (but still watching those Grounds raptly), he asked, "So, what do you think, then? Is there a right type for dragons, or is it all luck once you get Searched?"

Okassis didn't know what answer he was hoping for. He didn't know if he was the right type for dragons - however much he might hope, he was a flawed and ugly creature at times, even when he knew he could be strong, brave, crafty, and all the other things he thought that a dragonrider must be. Which would be worse, though; to exemplify everything that a dragonrider should be, and lose out because of random chance, or to fall short and fail to earn your chance, to know forever that you simply weren't good enough?

Zara shook her head. "I don't think so. I've seen all sorts Impress, and all sorts left on the sands. Nobody even really knew the girl that Impressed the gold out of the last clutch--and you'd think golds would be attracted to the bossy ones that stood out." She shrugged, eyes on the crack of light that shone in. "Dragons defy expectations, especially at Hatchings. Even a Bitran couldn't give you accurate odds on what's in an egg, except for anything a child could tell you."

If Okassis were in a joking mood, he'd take that as a challenge. Hah! he'd say, tossing his head and crossing his arms - Want to set odds on if I can set odds?

He wasn't in a joking mood now, though. Quite the opposite; he was serious and reflective, thinking on his incalculable chances, wondering what to make of them. There was no guarantee that he, or anyone else, would Impress - then again, he'd always known it. He just hadn't wanted to believe it.

"... I like to think that just means they're smarter than we are," he concluded somberly, pulling away from the crack. Okassis had had enough of this spywork, now; it seemed to him that this was getting into dangerously thoughtful territory, and that was something better suited for his journal than new faces. Mustering up a carefree smile, he said, "Hey, y'know, we'd better get back before we're missed, right?"
