He laughed and shrugged, "More of a mother figure than I could ever be." Voltaire returned as he now reached down and plucked some blades of grass, "You're actually pretty good with her, from what I witnessed. I'd say just do what comes natural, it seems best for you."

"If you say so." Another stitch, and another. She was coming to the end of the hem - she'd started it earlier.

He smirked, "I don't just say so I also know so." Voltaire's smirk turned into a smile as he shrugged his shoulders while leaning back to where his hands supported him instead of laying down completely, "Also if you have any questions at all, you may ask me anything. Just so you know. You barely asked me anything at all. Makes me wonder if you just trust me that much, or of you are just shy."

"I've asked questions that have needed to be asked. However, your business is just that - yours. You'll tell me if you want to." She shrugged, glancing at him. "I do trust you, though. If I didn't, I wouldn't have accepted your offer."

He nods to what she says and looked thoughtful, "Glad you trust me. Though I am offering it up to you now. Any questions, you may ask them. I'll be utterly honest with you." Voltaire watched her now, awaiting her reaction patiently.

Another stitch, and another. It was a few minutes before she spoke again.

When she did, she gestured at his head. "Your ears. They're shaped oddly. Do you know why, or is it some stray characteristic, like webbed feet, or some such thing?"

He laughed instead of taking offence and shrugged, "The way I look is thanks to my father, where ever he is right now. I am certain he is not in this world, though. I am half-elven, at least that is what my mother claimed before she passed on many years ago. If it is true, I do not know, but I am pretty sure it is not stray. Most of the people in my old caravan that I asked just ignored the question or yelled at me for it. I stopped asking." Voltaire shook his head at the memories, "Got my share of bruises that way. I was stubborn then. I still am, just less so."

She managed a small laugh, as well.

"... was your mother kind? Did you ever know your father?"

He smiled at her when she laughed, it was good to hear her laugh, even if just a little.

"Mama was a very kind woman, at least after she got over the initial depression that seemingly took her over for a while after my birth. She used to try and give me away...I must have done something to wake her up cause soon she took more interest in my welfare and took better care of me." Voltaire looked thoughtful for a moment, "My father ... is an enigma to me. He wrote us sometimes, just to make sure I am being cared for and sometimes he sent me trinkets and toys. I never got to see him though. One day the letters just ... stopped." His face clouded for a moment as if sad or trying to remember, "Apparently there was some sort of a war and my father died, or was severely injured. It might just have been the messanger sent to give us a lie. My father was a prince. It would have been a scandal if anyone figured out I was out there before he was crowned king." There was no bitterness to his tone, but rather a sort of resignation and acceptance of events that had happened in his past. Voltaire seemed like he was being quite honest, brutally honest infact with Lor.

"Ah... It sounds like a nice life, in a way." Pull, stitch, pull. Reaching the end of the hem, she tied off the thread and cut it. Then she took the hood, fitting an embroidery hoop over part of it. There was a small design drawn on in dots of black ink.

He leaned over a bit to peer over what she was doing and seemed to nod a bit with approval, likely to her comment, "Yeah. It was pretty good." Voltaire leaned away after commenting, "You do very nice work, Annjette will love it." He seemed to pause a moment, " I think I ought to go check on her."

"If you'd like to." She gave an internal sigh of relief - she'd hoped he wouldn't ask about her own family life.

She cut a piece of dark purple thread and threaded the needle. After knotting one end of the thread, she set to work.

He nodded a bit slowly standing, "I think I should. She's been having a lot of nightmares lately." Voltaire started to move toward the wagon before stopping to look back at Lor, "You had a hard life, Lorelei, I can tell. You don't have to say a word for me to understand that much, in fact you don't need to tell me. Just know I am here for you, we all are." Voltaire then disappeared into the wagon just as Annjette began to cry out. His timing was quite good, for the moment.

"Your life was probably harder," she murmured, pausing for a minute in her embroidery.

It might be nice to tell somebody aside from Shamira. It might be nice...

He returned a few moments after disappearing in to the wagon, carrying a very upset little girl. Voltaire would murmur things to her and lightly kiss the girl's forehead where the marking lay upon her brow. Annjette would rub her eyes with the unfeathered part of her arm and sniff a little. Voltaire settled next to Lor and settled Annjette to his lap where the girl settled looking somewhat peturbed like she usually did after a bad dream. They troubled her greatly, dreams of being left behind again.

"There, we are both here, you see." Voltaire muttered soothingly glancing at Lor, "Neither of us would leave you behind, Duckling." He continued to mutter, she gradually calmed.

"Mmm." She murmured somewhat grumpily and rested her head against his chest closing her eyes for a moment.
