Desert_Fox_Rommel Fresnel Desert_Fox_Rommel Another thought comes to mind. How does a bag of sand stop thermite? If I recall thermite is self oxidizing so even cutting off the air supply won't stop it from burning. Thermite is, magnesium isn't. Magnesium just has the brute strength to pull oxygen from nearly anything, though apparently not SiO2. Ah ok I thought you meant Class D fires in general. I don't think thermite is a fire so much as an extremely exothermic chemical reaction. Then again, what more IS fire?

Man of the Demoneye s**t! I just got rid of a bunch of old '70s life jackets. I should have saved one to see how (in)effective it was. It's two layers of nylon and three inches of styrofoam. It wouldn't even slow the round down.

What about the material used in white-water rafts? The instructor for the one I rode in said that it was thick enough to withstand a .30 caliber rifle round.

Thermite may just melt the sand into glass which after enough glassing just stop the thermite? What the ships really need are LRADs
