Delilah opted to rescue Manuela and bring the focus back abruptly to her. "Because it's fun," she answered. "If you're doing it right, anyway."

The expression on her face made it impossible to tell if she was speaking from experience or if she was just drawing on her very special, hugely honestly open home-situation.

"People wouldn't do it if there wasn't some good part, would they?" asked Ophelia, thinking critically and determined to stop seeming like such a little kid. "Like, if it was excruciatingly painful or something, no one would ever do it."

She glanced around the room nervously. Her tone indicated she was being pretty hypothetical about all this.

"We're not here to judge anyone based on what they have and haven't done, right?" she asked, glancing a bit hesitantly at Manny. She didn't think the other girl's revelation changed anything about how she saw her, but it was too soon to tell.

Then again Ophelia'd gone and kissed the first boy who'd asked, and she wasn't entirely sure she was proud of that anymore. At the very least, it was a private thing. She'd been embarrassed even telling Wisp about that. If they were going to be expected to be that open for the rest of this course, it was going to be absolute torture!

"And it's also a bonding experience," Rory said, recalling a conversation about it with with Seren. "Or, at least that's what I'm told. And the fun business, too." She was several shades of red herself, but not as bad as before. Getting use to this class was going to be a challenge.

She said nothing about what Manny said. Obviously there would be some who knew, and, well, if it were her, she wouldn't wanna be judged for it either. She didn't even glance at Chris.

"People do all sorts of s**t," Chris said. "They like fighting, but I'm betting it hurts most. Football, soccer, rugby, I'm betting there's lots of broken bones in all of those, but they still do it. You can't just assume people won't do something just because it hurts."

Cascati had already lead Antony out and down the hall: before his mother closed the door, an audible "Wish I'd thought of that," was heard before the rest of the school was closed away again.

Ms. Lindy listened tranquilly as they got into their discussion, pulling up a stool from her desk and perching herself on it, ignoring Wisp's giggles in favour of listening to what everyone else had to contribute. "Yeah," drawled Jace, wiggling her eyebrows at Manny briefly, "it's meant to be slightly more fun than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, Chris."

"But everyone says it really hurts the first time," persisted the other Darnell sister, echoing Kisala, her hand on Ophelia's shoulder for safety. At least she wasn't having the hysterics any more.

"Some girls," the teacher agreed, "but it's all about relaxing, slightly less about broken bones. There's nothing wrong with not having done this yet, okay? Maybe some of you want to wait for marriage, maybe some of you want to wait until the time feels right. We're just talking about it today, and I'm really pleased you guys are making progress with this. Here's a basic, though!"

She stood up and drew a round circle on the board. "I'm no artist," Ms. Lindy said, adding in a tiny sperm with a smiley face. "Okay. Penetrative girl-guy sex. When a guy ejaculates -- no, Wisp, you were doing so well, come on, be zen like Del over here -- during penetrative sex, hundreds of thousands of sperm travel up the vaginal canal -- "

"Is there any more retarded word for it than vaginal canal," said Jace.

"Point taken," said Ms. Lindy, jangling. "Anyway, Kisala, egg's in the womb, we covered a little of this in puberty a few units ago, there's a chance depending on where you are in your cycle that the egg will fertilize Princess Ovum over here and that's pregnancy. There is no tried and true method of birth control that is one hundred percent proof of not getting pregnant if there's penetrative sex going on -- but we sure can give it all we can, and it's up in the eighties to nineties percent range of prevention. We also want to prevent STDs and other infections. Have fun, stay clean."

She twirled the pen in her fingers, hesitated, and then said: "Look. A lot of people will tell you that the safest method is not doing it. Personally I think that's crap! You're curious, sex can be great and when you're in love it is an incredible experience. Actually, even when you're not in love it can be an incredible experience."

"Uh, you're not givin' us sex as homework, right?" Iggy looked gently bemused, the blush caused by his fall long since passed as soon as he settled in beside Jace and pulled his legs beneath him Indian-style. "'Cause I'll just take the F then, Miss Lindy. Dad's made me swear that I'll only have meaningful sex."

"But full of what meaning?" Delilah again twisted in her recline to look over her shoulder at Iggy and Jace, sparing another brief glance at Wisp and Ophelia's pink faces. "Sex is just as much about metaphor as anything else sometimes." She paused then and looked thoughtful. "But metaphor or not, I'd say I prefer safety."

"I guess so," nodded Ophelia, who had never much had reason to talk to Aurora in her life before but now felt inclined to comment because she had just been shot a rather hopeless glance. "But sometimes the metaphors are just about sex."

"Like, remember all those poems we read in English last quarter?" she asked. "And don't try to tell me that Shakespeare didn't make some of the dirtiest jokes in history, because we read Twelfth Night, and it's all in there."

"And if it's not about sex it's about homosexual subtext. Remember A Separate Peace?" she asked.

Chris was, by now, getting irritated that he had gotten Antony out of the class and not himself. He contemplated knocking himself up the back of the head, then realized it would probably hurt his tail more than it would his skull, so he said what was on his mind (as he was very apt to do.)

"What about emotional baggage?" he asked. "You can't tell me you don't get emotionally attached to the people you sleep with, especially when you're this young." (IE he didn't give a s**t about literature and sexual metaphors and never would.)

"When you have sex with someone you're trusting them with a lot, and if there's no sense of commitment it's like you're just giving yourself away. Hell, I can almost understand getting paid for it before I can understand sleeping around." Which was, to him, what it sounded like the teacher was telling them to do.

Delilah regarded Chris and his outburst with a faint quirk of her mouth; it could hardly be called a smile and there was no amusement or teasing in her gaze. "Mama says it's personal and, well, personally I don't think you should be having sex, Chris, until you personally feel it's right. That's mature and all... But I also don't think that you or anyone else should personally tell anyone else when to have sex. Or make love. I think making love sounds like more fun, anyway. Don't you?" Now she did smile and it was bright and sugar-sweet and a bit worrying.

For some reason her comment cooled him down and he leaned back, his gold eyes gleaming and his hand slipping into his pocket. He hesitated for a moment, fingering a cigar, then pulled out a sucker, unwrapping it and popping it into his mouth.

A simple thought had kept him from losing his temper. If he failed high school it wouldn't mean s**t in the long run. "Sex, making love, ********, call it whatever makes you happy."

Antony stepped in about that time, still a bit pale but his eyes weren't quite as dilated. He would have gone home, but his Father had patted him on the back and said to not fall asleep.

Kisala blinked at the explanation. Honestly, she'd kind've ignored all the stuff on puberty because it hadn't seemed really -pertinent- to her. I mean, yeah, sure, she had the beginnings of boobs and whatnot, but she wasn't interested in doing anything that involved them. Biological sciences wouldn't get her into SPACE!

Still, everything she'd said made sense, so then now she knew how babies were made. And even with the other girls talking about it (some who seemed to know about it from experience) sex still didn't seem like something terribly important. She was with Iggy on this one. Or at least, she thought she was. She was starting to really lose track of the whole conversation, though, especially when Ophelia started discussing things that happened in English class, because talking about symbolism always confused her that much more than just discussing vocabulary or mapping out sentences.

"Um. But, what if you don't ever want to do it?" She was pretty sure her mother never had. And she knew most of the Monks in her temple didn't, "Isn't that okay too?"

"I don't think there's anything that says you have too," Manny said, glancing at the teacher for confirmation, "Delilah's right, it's personal. So if personally you don't want to, no one can make you." Though if they try, you kick their butts. The thought made her smile, Jace was the only one there that seemed well equipped to kick anybody's butt.

"I agree. If you don't want too, I don't think you should -have- too. It's your choice with someone that's as willing, and that you care about," Rory said in agreement. Which maybe or may not have been a relief too Chris, but she really wasn't thinking about that.

She looked over as Antony entered the room again and made sure he could make it to the couch without any major obstacles.

Casca tramped back in too, with every sign of suffering. He flopped back down on his beanbag chair just as his mother was saying, "That's the thing, ladies, sex is entirely your choice. Yours. You never owe anyone sex, you never give anyone sex if you don't want to, if you don't want to have sex there is nothing wrong with you and don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

She smiled at Manuela. "See, that's why I couldn't make sex homework," said Ms. Lindy, "I mean also that would be really creepy and skeezy, but that's not what this is about. I'm not saying, go out and have sex! -- but sex means different things to different people. Some of you will find it's very emotional, you're very attached. It's a big deal. Some of you will find you don't have that kind of connection, and that's fine too. There's only one rule, and that is -- never do anything you don't want to do, and never do anything someone else doesn't want to do. Okay, that's two rules. We'll talk about sex law too later, but that's a little weirder with you guys because most of you are under two years old."

If that wasn't bizarre enough. She looked at Chris, who looked curmudgeonly about the entire thing; Jace, who looked impatient; Manny and Delilah, who looked calm and zen both. Baffled Kisala. Slightly less baffled Iggy. Ophelia; Antony (who seemed less concussed), her son, no-longer-tittering Wisp --

"Okay, at this point I'm going to make you put condoms on bananas," she said. "Not because I think you guys are ever going to need to know how to put a condom on a banana, because it'll give you something to do with your hands as you discuss this out for the last quarter of the class, because this is a really embarrassing topic to try to meet somebody's eyes with. So. Before we start that, I'm really proud of you guys for discussing it like you have -- okay except Casca: have you got anything to contribute before we go on?"

"No," said her son, eyes closed, curls spread over the beanbag. "Because you are my mother."

"Just one statement. A question. Anything."

The gargoyle boy sighed so hard that it nearly sucked in passing objects. Obviously reciting as a specific plant, he droned: "What-about-gay-sex."

"I'm so glad you asked about that!" she said, enthused. "We'll go into gay sex specifically into one of the classes, but just letting you guys know that it is completely fine to be questioning your sexuality at the moment. It is natural. This room is a gay safe space, I want you all openminded. Some of you may not know that I personally identify as gay! If you want to ask me anything, I'm also the Rainbow Pride rep for the school. Thank you, Casca."

She got out a tub of bananas, huffing as she put it on the low table at the front. Then, jangling, she got out a tub of condoms. "Nurse's office and counsellor's office always supplies condoms, no questions asked," she said.

It was Jace who reached up first to grab a handful of condoms in one hand, and two bananas in the other. The redhead simply flopped down, peeled a banana, and started to eat it as she sniggered (and it sounded a bit phoned-in, like her heart wasn't in the snigger) over the condoms.

Chris grabbed a banana, then two more, not bothering with the condoms, and headed back to his spot, biting the sucker off its stick and crunching it down before he started to eat. He seriously, seriously hated this class.

Antony stole one of his bananas then reluctantly grabbed a handful of condoms to seem as if he were participating. He had gotten through the class this long without saying much, he did hope he'd get through the rest of it with equal ease.

But maybe he'd have to get another concussion to keep up the trend.
