Her flat stare of loathing made it perfectly clear that she was not going to lose this war-- no. Not by a long shot. This battle would be long lived, and many blows would be exchanged… But Tepin was sure of this above all else--- She, with the utmost of ease, could out-cute this man.
And so, seeing as how there was no way to avoid going to the store with them both, she needed to find a way to at least alienate Mr. Peacock as much as possible. His face when she was held-- that was the face she wanted him to have the entire trip. One of pure jealousy and hatred and a little bit of shock: that was the winner.
And so, jumping off of the couch to pull on her shoes, she smiled up at them innocently. If only they could see the hatred and malice behind that smile-- maybe then they would have known to escape. But no-- there was no escaping the hatred of a nine year old girl.
Rejoining them, shoes bucked and ready to go, she looked up at Varu. She knew just what to do-- it would work like a charm. Not once had he denied her requests, and she knew this time would be no different.

Hook.
Line.
Sinker.
Valeriu the Big Brother was in action. With a 'hup' noise he easily lifted her onto his shoulders, hands wrapped securely around her lower legs to make sure she didn't fall off.
Which meant Quinn was sans a Vale-hand to hold.
The girl was good.
"Yeah, I've got ee't," he flicked an ear at Quinn with a mock frown, making extra sure that his tail whapped across the back of Quinn's legs challengingly as they headed out.
The walk to the bunches of clothing stores in Middling was probably an odd procession to see - a tall, dark, and dangerous looking felinistic man carrying this tiny little girl up high on his shoulders, with a rainbow at his side.
But Valeriu was in a good mood. They were going to beat the morning-mom-rush, he got to indulge in his big brother whims, and he had some time to spend with Quinn. A sunny day, all around.
"Ee't ee's a good day today. Summer ee's finally coming ee'n. I am thinking...shorts, too, da?" A pair of cargos would be nice for when he went to the Harbor. He tilted his head back to grin up at Tepin. "V'hat do you v'ant to get?"

This turn of events did not make Quinn happy. He had no hand to hold, and Vale was paying more attention to the girl, now. Quinn grabbed Vale's tail and tugged. "Don't hit me with your tail, boy!" He laughed, but stuffed his hands in his pockets irritably, trotting along beside the two as they walked down the streets.
Suddenly, he was hit with an idea.
A terrible, wonderful idea.
"Here, Vale, how about you let my carry her some? You have to carry little girls all day, no sense in you carrying her the whole way, I can handle some. And I'm sure she'd love to ride on my back, right?" He flashed her a pleasant smile that said, in no uncertain terms, 'If I can't have him, no one can.'
He reached his arms out to her. "And I'm certainly strong enough. She's small." He smiled cheerfully at Vale. "And besides, we kind of got off on the wrong foot, and maybe I can get her to like me more by carrying her."

Mocha-colored hands were holding the top of his head, carefully watching as they passed by rows of housewives and wives out shopping. She was tall now-- and seeing things from this strange new perspective made her feel almost cocky. After all, from his height, she was taller than Quinn.
Smiling down at the rainbow, she felt pretty darn good about the situation.
But Varu had distracted her from her insane hatred-- what did she want? Normally her mother went and bought clothes without her, bringing them home and asking her to try them on before returning what didn’t fit. She tried to think of just what it was that she would pick out.
“I dunno-- I guess I’ll have to look. Where are we going, anyway?”
But-- Satan had moved! His ill-intent was almost visibly oozing from him as he offered his fake kindness out.
Don’t think I can’t see your intention! You plan on dropping me!!
“Noooo~ You’re hair would be too itchy! Varu’s hair is nice.” Her fingers scratched through his hair, mussing it as she tried to make her point. “Besides, he’s furry; you’re just pokey!”
Then, like two monsters, his hands came reaching for her-- he was going to do It: Forcefully remove her from her throne of success! She had to think fast-- they were closing in on her like large talons-- she had to think! A small yelp erupted from the girl as her body clamped around the man’s head-- she was going to latch for life-- just try to see him tug her off!!
“Nooooooo~~~”
The sight must have been even stranger for the housewives--- why would a child stick to the scarier man instead of going towards the one that obviously looked more friendly?

"You are sure you can?" he asked seriously, a teasing undertone to voice even as his tail swished away from further tugs. "She ee's older and bigger than Sydni, after all. V'hat ee'f your skinny body just bent over?" Now Vale was out in the full-blown teasing, a grin edging onto his face. Maybe because he was terrible enough to actually be imagining it, and finding himself laughing at the mental image.
Not that he was complaining. Hugs were magnificent when you could completely engulf someone with your arms. Still, Quinn always reminded him of a little snake running around. All wriggly and bending in the strangest ways.
At Tepin's resistance, though, he couldn't help but bark out a laugh, tugging at her feet amusedly and enjoying the scratching.
"Ee's that the only reason you like me? For my ears? I should have known." Oh, but children were quite fickle. He was glad she was feeling better - this was a marked improvement from last night.
"V'ell, maybe this v'orks out for the best. After all, I can handle ee't. Besides," he added, sounding casual, although the hesitantly shy glance he directed at Quinn spoke otherwise, as did the tail that was suddenly swishing down lower to his feet, "Ee't ee's v'hat a man does, da? Carry books, and children, and groceries. For my boyfriend. So you don't have to."
Anywhere besides Quinn was suddenly fascinating to look at as embarrassment washed through him yet again. Which seemed to happen quite often now that he had one. It was the first time he'd used the word in context, and it didn't sound quite right, but it was closest he could come without sounding like a romantic idiot. For my courted. For my partner. Or, worst of worst, for my sweetheart.
So, really, it was the best alternative.

Quinn, an evil grin on his face, was ready to accept the girl and take her onto his shoulders, but then Vale changed his mind, and he sighed. Until he heard Vale talk, and his mind was thinking something more along the lines of 'D'awwwwwwwwwww!'. His hands might have been busy, but nothing stopped Quinn from leaning over and giving him a peck on the cheek.
"That's sweet, Vale. Thanks." He wanted to ruffle the other boy's hair, but the girl was in the way. He glared at her, then returned his smile to the embarrassed Vale. "You're blushing! Awwww." Quinn giggled and ticked the other godling a little.
"We should go pick Sydni back up from the babysitter's! It's not fair that she doesn't get to come!"
And that way, he could have someone to carry so his hands wouldn't be awkwardly looking for something to do.
"And I'm sure she'd like a new dress or something, right?"
And if we're going to have females present, he wanted at least one of them to not be a total brat. Sydni liked him, and maybe she could distract Little Girl for a while, so that Vale would pay a bit more attention to him.
And he was hoping to go somewhere alone with Vale, too. There goes that idea.

If Tezcatlipoca was present-- he must have been gagging. In fact, had Tepin had access to Vale’s thoughts, she probably would have joined him. But, wonderfully oblivious, she simply rested her chin on Vale’s head, letting the tiny ear flicks tickle her cheeks with each movement.
“He’s supposed to be a man too, you know.” She chided, though should Quinn come near her with those grubby grabbing hands again she was going to bite him. “Don’t baby him or he might grow boobies.”
Haha-- the mental image of a shirtless man suddenly sprouting breasts on the street made her giggle. Laughter like chimes, she reached her hands up the Vale’s head, resting them on the crown of his head. If for nothing else-- having Quinn around entertained her.
But Sydders? Tepin didn’t know how fun that would be. Sure, playing with babies was fun at home and all… But at the store? The liked the cry, and they liked the fuss, and they liked to throw tantrums. Granted, Sydni had seemed like a quiet enough baby, but really, didn’t all kids yell in public? Wasn’t it part of being a kid?
Still-- in the night that Tepin had been there, even she could realize how much Vale loved Sydni. To even try to request she stay at the babysitters would be like stabbing him in the kidneys. So quietly, idly, she ignored her thoughts, scratching at the base of Varu’s catlike ears.
“Varu….” She thought to herself, scratching as her eyes lazily scanned the street, “If you got a hat, people might not look at you so much.”

He smiled at the cheek kiss, muffling a snort of laughter at Tepin's comment.
"I like ee't, though. Plus, that v'ould be-" He started out with a chuckle, then trailed off. Quinn. As a girl. The image popped up into his mind, even as a blush flared up on his cheeks at the thought.
That v'ould be really cute.
"-Ee'mpossible," he continued, shaking his head. He hoped it hadn't shown on his face that he was all too enamored with that particular visage (it did). But he still liked Quinn as he was, tail contently flicking up to beat a pattern against the back of Quinn's knees as they walked.
The moment the tickling started up, however, there was suddenly five feet of separation between them, the feline godling peering at Quinn suspiciously. "No tickling. Remember - I v'ill end you." Tickling was not funny business. Not funny at all.
"I v'ould go and get Sydni," he finally settled down back next to Quinn, although his tail nervously twitched in fear of fingers, "But today she ee's has a playdate v'ith her friend."
The thought of Valeriu setting up a playdate for the girl with other mothers was pretty amusing. But it was true - there was a three-year-old with sandy brown hair that she loved building blocks with, and he wanted her to have a normal and well-adjusted childhood (as normal as it could get, at least). Being with him all the time wouldn't accomplish that, no matter how much he fretted not having her in his sight.
Although sometimes he was afraid that one of the mothers would say something, grow just as protective of her, and take his little sister away. He'd avoided the government so far, but...He shook his head with a frown, looking up at Tepin and enjoying the ear scratches.
"Hn?" He blinked, and grinned. "I do not mind. Ee't ee's better that they see me as I am rather than know me as something I am not, da?" Sure, it made things a bit harder. Sure, more often than not he was alienated. But the ones who didn't care were the ones he wanted to know.
He may or may not have moved closer to Quinn at the statement. And if his tail was trying to curl around the other boy's arm, it didn't mean anything.

Quinn snorted, and glanced at Tepin. "Careful, don't let him baby you too much, or you never will!" Or make me too angry. Then you really never will.
Quinn did not like that thought. Not one bit. And Vale's blushing face meant he had gone directly into imagining it. First Writ thought he would look better as a woman, now this?! No. No. He was not a woman, and he would not be imagined so. He reached over and tugged Vale's tail again. "No. Quit imagining me as a woman. Never again."
Quinn frowned. "Aww, but I like Sydni." His mood immediately dropped, and he had thought it was a great idea. He stuffed his hands in his pockets, and glared at the sidewalk until he felt Vale's tail on his arm. He pulled himself in tighter to Vale so that he could stroke it.
"I like your ears. I don't want you to hide them, because I think they're adorable." So there, Little Girl.
Quinn hated her, but he decided it would be for the best to put up with her for the time being. Maybe she'd move out, soon.
He didn't really believe that. Vale would never kick her out, and she already seemed attached. He didn't like how much Vale had decided to like her over night. Quinn had had to WORK for that level of trust and friendship, dammit! He had the scars to prove it! And so did Vale, he remembered with a mischievous grin.

“Nuh-uh!!” She was outraged-- how dare he say that! “My momma gets babied all the time and her boobs are huge!!” As if Quinn needed any more proof, the girl leaned back from her transportation, miming the size with her hands-- holding them out nearly a half-foot from her own flat chest. “She’s ‘stacked’!”
Protest completed, her chin went back to sullenly resting on the man under her. Why were boys so stupid? They never got anything. Stupid, stupid boys and their stupidity!
Secretly, secretly she was happy, though. Maybe it really was being babied that caused breast growth-- if she stayed with Varu, she could be a model!! Her parents would see her in magazines, see how successfully she was, and then they’d come crawling back.
‘We didn’t mean it!’ They would exclaim, ‘Just look at you! There’s no way you could be one of those!’
But no-- She knew that no matter what miraculous growth she might have by being with men, there was no way it would cause her parents to want her back. A small sigh escaped her as she looked forward absently, of course they wouldn’t want her-- she was just a retard, after all. Mr. Miller had made it perfectly clear in the last few years he didn’t want her around.
But what about her mom? Was Momma looking for her, at least?
Gah!! Stupid, stupid, stupid boys!! She was scowling now, outwardly showing her unheard thoughts. They had to just go and ruin everything! They had to just go getting her thinking about it!!
But she wouldn’t cry-- she vowed. Not now. Not ever. Not in front of them, at least. Varu told her he needed to see her smiles, so she couldn’t cry anymore.
⁞⁞ You’ve already grown… But what is this? I leave you alone for a few hours and you’ve already met two players?

He really did trip that time at their words, skipping a step and righting himself quickly. For such a tan teenager, his face was amazingly bright red.
"Can v'e not talk about that?" Indecent, totally, completely - you just didn't discuss womens', womens'..! Not in the middle of the street! Not ever! "Ee't ee's not polite to talk about ee'n public."
These two were going to kill him with humiliation, he knew it. They'd just keep talking and talking, and spouting such things, and he would finally die of embarrassment.
Thankfully, though, they were finally in the shopping district. Clothing shops, among other things, lined this street. A bit different from the flea markets he was used to, but easier to find what you were looking for. If a bit more pricey. Ears flicking back, he looked around - mentally evaluating each store.
Gotta have a game plan.
"So, v'hich store first? You v'ant shorts, I v'ant cargos, and you," he shifted the girl on his shoulders, looking up, "need a new outfit or two."

Quinn grinned, and pulled his hands out of his pockets, cracking his knuckles.
This is what he was an expert at.
"Alright. That store has really nice cargos, but they're kind of expensive. That store over there's having a half off sale starting in..." he closed his eyes and thought, "thirty minutes, so we should hit that store second. They've got some little girls' clothes, and also the kind of shorts that I want. Not cargos, though." He turned, and pointed to the other side of the street. "That place has cargos, and they're doing a deal where first time shoppers there get fourty five percent off the stuff they buy, so..." He looked at Tepin. "We can say she's buying, and they'll give us the discount."
He led them towards the store, but stopped before they went in. "THAT store, over there," pointing to yet another one, "Isn't having a sale, and they have these shorts I've been wanting, but they're really expensive, so..." He paused. "I guess we won't go there. I wouldn't want to make you pay for them."
He calculated quickly in his head. "So, don't spend too much at this store, because we're probably spending the most on her clothes, which is at the second store we're going to. I could find some cheap shorts, there, I guess, but I really want those..." He trailed off again, and looked down, doing his best to put on a fake blush.
"But no, I'm not making you pay for something that expensive."

She frowned down at him from her perch-- she knew that up here, guarded by Varu, she was untouchable. Having that kind of invincibility had given her quite an ego boost-- she would be holding her tongue a lot less than she might have if Quinn could have gotten to her on the ground.
“God!!” She interjected, her arms folded at the elbows and hands pressed against Varu’s head, “You are such a girl already!!”
He really was! What kind of man had their hair that long anyway? And the way he acted! It looked like the way her mother acted whenever she went shopping with the family. Her frown clearly showed her disapproval at Quinn’s lunacy.
She was huffy-- huffy and grumpy. She didn’t like this setup at all.
“I can just wear my old clothes! Can we please just go home?”

He was impressed. Quinn certainly knew the shops well.
He liked that.
His ears pricked up at the chance - here, here it was! The first step to courtship! He read about this, he knew what he had to do. The knight had to bring favors back to his courted - if she, or in Vale's case, he, wanted something, that knight would slay dragons and fight armies to retrieve it.
Quinn wanted a pair of shorts, Valeriu would get him that pair of shorts!
Leaning over (without dislodging Tepin), he pecked a quick kiss to Quinn's cheek with an enthused smile.
"Good game plan. And do not v'orry - consider ee't a present. I v'ant you to have your shorts." A present. He was suddenly hit with all the things he had to do - find out Quinn's birthday, remember holidays like Valentine's Day --
But, chances were, one or them wouldn't live that long.
Distracted, he blinked up at Tepin, hefting her off his shoulders and keeping her slung snugly in his arms, giving her a stern look.
"Tepin, you should not say things like that. Ee't ee's hurtful," he chided her, "Not only to Quinn, but to me as v'ell. He ee's someone I care for. You v'ouldn't v'ant someone hurting someone you care for, v'ould you? Or to be hurt just for being yourself?"
Tweaking her nose, he let off on the severe look, smiling ruefully, "Plus, ee't ee's not cute, and does not suit you. Now don't be grumpy." Sadface Vale came into play - when it came to persuading Sydni to not throw a fit, his sadface often worked. "Let me treat you for v'hile you are here. Ee't ee's not often I have a little princess to dress up so beautifully."

Quinn grinned excitedly. "Hooray! Thanks so much!" He threw his arms around Vale and hugged him, not being quite as careful to not dislodge Tepin. He frowned at her.
"I am NOT a girl." He growled. "I'm very much male. I could never be as much of a brat as you are." He glared at her. "I'm just trying to be helpful in getting you clothes, so quit complaining."
Quinn nodded as Vale spoke. "Yah! It's bratty and rude." He crossed his arms. "Stupid girls. Only good one is Sydni, and she couldn't even come."
Quinn shrugged, and led them into the store. "This is where we'll find your cargo shorts, Vale." He looked around. "There! In the back of the store with the big sign that says 'Men'. They've got some nice brands." He led them over to the racks of shorts. "What sort of colors are you looking for?"
