Good news gals. I'm working with Mashimaro Girl now, and the owner is investing in my designs. That means ... I'll be launching my own brand. The first dress has been sent for production and is a fusion of gothic lolita and classical styles. The next will be more classic, and the winter release I have planned will be the gothic carousel horse I discussed before. ;D

Congradulations! When it finally goes into production please let us know!

So, on EGL, someone made a post about the history and changes in lolita over the past eight years or so. It's pretty remarkable how drastically some of the brands have changed styles in that time!

Especially Angelic Pretty and Victorian Maiden.

Is gothic really a dying breed?
~~~Not really, I think even the sweet styles have some of goth in them, with the black versions of JSKs and OPs. I've seen people sorta use these darker versions of a print and make something totally gothic.
I don't think gothic will really die out. Sweet just seems to be the easier option to start with now a days, I think.
Will sweet continue to be the forefront of lolita fashion?
~~~So far the leading brands are sweet, but who knows really. You never know in fashion. Though lately i've been seeing more muted colors and especially brown, so who knows. Maybe sweet will lead to more classic styles and such like IW

Is another substyle waiting to take the lead? Will it be classic? Punk? Or some previously considered "theme" that will be the next big fad?
~~~I don't know I've been seeing a lot of Deco lolita, but who knows.
I do believe the goth loli is a dying genre. When's the last time you've seen a true goth? An actual goth? I think they all grew up or are in hiding! Many people blame the emo for the death of goth, maybe we'll start seeing some emo lolis?
I do believe sweet loli is one of the most popular genres because it's easy to get and maybe even easy to pull off. Maybe hime will take over? It's pretty over the top albeit lolis might have to turn down the colors (or will we have candy princesses?)
Personally I'd like to see a good hanloli. I think it can be done.
Shiro is just a color classification. Style comes from the way that the outfit is coordinated. An all white outfit can be sweet, or gothic, or classic, or punk, or wa, or ... whatever. The styles are not dependent on color, but instead on the way the outfit is put together.
I don't think gothic is "a dying breed," but it's mostly just faded out of fashion. I think it will come back soon enough, especially after fans realize that it's less popular (and have a desire to try to revive it).
it also may be a matter of online presence. it seems like gothic lolitas less frequently take/post pictures of themselves, and therefore most of the photos visible online are of sweet (and sometimes classic) lolitas. new lolitas see this, so that's what they're exposed to and will tend towards. not only that, but sweet is the most eye-catching and easy to start with for westerners (with sweet brands being most accessible to order online).
as for upcoming trends, i have a feeling it will be something thus far unseen-- a more toned-down and "natural" approach to lolita. with the emergence of mori girl and how many lolitas i've seen catching on to the movement, i can easily see that influencing the color scheme & method of layering lolita clothes.
personally, i'm excited to have super-sweet and deco lolita styles out of the spotlight.. :T
I don't think goth lolita could ever truly die out just because the number of Goths there are, not only in lolita but in regular culture as well. One or two Goths are always bound to switch to lolita every once in a while, same with punk, and therefore i think it will continue on. I love sweet but in a wacky way. You know with the candy stripped sock passed the knees and the lolly pop in tow. But I think the punk is definitely a forerunner in the competition because most loli's may they be sweet or goth or some other genre tend to have a want for at least one punk costume and that alone makes it seem like the next big thing.
Gothic isn't dying, but its more like, what was once considered gothic is no longer gothic. For example, look at the "Gothic" catagory on Lolitafashion.org. Most of the examples look like sweet but in black. It seems now there is less straight "gothic" brands. Yes, you have MMM, BPN and a few others, but most of those don't ship overseas, or are very expensive. It is much easier to obtain sweet clothes than gothic, so most newer lolitas are dressing sweet.
I think sweet will continue to be popular, maybe Hime will also become a more popular substyle. I can see Classic becoming popular, or maybe a more cutesy Emikyu style.
I don't care for trends. Even if it is no longer in style I will never let my AP go. heart
The gothic lolita seems to be fading for a while but I'm sure it will come back. Fashions tend to go around in a circle...
I really like the sweet lolita, I first like the black and pink theme but now I moving towards the pink and sax colors. They remind me of cottan candy.... heart
I like how the deco is also showing up simply because its fun! I like going to events and deck out in my Jsk and have fun!
From what I've seen on egl, it seems almost as if gothic lolita is climbing back to popularity - not so much in the U.S., but definitely in Europe. It also seems as if gothic lolita is just keeping it in the down low while sweet lolita has its moment of fame. Other than the idea that sweet orientated brands have access to Western shoppers, I think that people may be more geared to sweet because it does break away to the commonly misused term gothic lolita (goth-loli, etc.). Obviously, it's just personal choice, but I thought that I'd throw that idea in the bag.
Here's a few trends that are also seen and gone in the lolita scene (since 5 years ago):
standard knee-length skirts ---> above the knee
frilly/lace topped, knee high socks ----> over the knee socks
platformed mary janes ----> larger variety of shoe styles, but mainly flats (and straps)
mini hats & head dresses ----> (alice) bows (bonnets are still a novelty)
pastels and embroidery ----> prints (actually, embroidered appliqués still seem to be a novelty, even among gothic orientated brands)
popularity of the hime-cut ---> popularity of hime-gyaru 'do (beehive)
natural make up/bare - - - > i dunno about you, but I've been seeing a lot more make up since deco-loli was in vogue
Actually the most things AP sells are also avaiable darker more gothic-like versions but they don't really sell that well so they don't produce them for the masses anymore. Another reason why the sweet one get sold more often are other styles like gyaru and ganguro that also use parts of the sweet lolita fashion so there is a bigger customer base existing then for gothic.
And no, gothic doesn't die out but you don't see them that often, special in japan, because they are most already over 20 and not attention seeking like the younger ones so they also don't make that many photos of them. Also there are more then enaugh clothing designs existing for lolita fashion, so if you want more gothic lolita bring up your ideas there (bodyline as example makes one almost every month and searches mainly for gothic and punk lolita fashion).
However, I think the next trend will be pearls since I see in the last time often lolitas with handmade pearl crowns.
I love Gothic Lolita Personally, I actually like all of them very much the same. But I've noticed a lot of Gothic Lolita coordinates and outfits aren't very attractive to the eye. I think Atelier Boz and Moi Meme Moitie are very beautiful and expensive. SO I'm thinking because EGL/EGA styles are a lot more expensive they're less popular.
I think sweet will have a very long run, considering a lot of girls are well. . . girly, no matter how much they deny it they crave sweet prints and things that SCREAM I'M A GIRL HAVE YOU NOTICED YET?! <333
