I think that most bands are pretentious, whether they're Evanescence or Mozart. Actors too - I mean, they're famous!
As for Abney Park - they play the best music ever! Even if they weren't steampunk, I love their music.
What is "steampunk music"? The whole genre is barely coming into focus in this day and age - it will take time to lay down ground rules.
I think the Gothic Archies sound like steampunk. The creepy music, the deep voice of the lead singer, it just reminds me of dark steampunk, rather than goth. But that may be because the band is tongue-in-cheek heart

Sita Carew What is "steampunk music"? The whole genre is barely coming into focus in this day and age - it will take time to lay down ground rules. I don't think there'll ever be any. Fantasy has been around for a long time, and is pretty widely known by now - yet we never got a definition for "fantasy music". I think (and hope!) it will be the same for Steampunk.

I really don't think ANY art form should ever have ground rules set for it. If you like a song or brand of music, you do, and if you don't you don't, as simple as that.
And I too am a fan of Abney Park. I did speak to Captain Robert a bit through Email and he's actually a pretty nice guy.

By rules, I didn't mean on just music - I meant like, what is steampunk? Is Goth Victorian part of it, or is it just goth- How sci-fi can a story get before it stops being steampunk - How close or far to historical accuracy can it be - etc.
I'm not saying I approve or disaprove of setting standards, I just assume from what happened with the genres of Goth and others that Steampunk will be catagorized as well. It wasn't so long ago when Goth was a vague genre - now look at it. Punkgoth, Victoriangoth, Preppygoth, GothLolita, etc.

This might be going a little offtopic, but the most recent Poets of the Fall album 'Revolution Roulette' reminded me very much of Steampunk, their style of dressing isn't, they're pretty normal looking dudes but the themes and music itself makes me think of clockwork and that whole industrial image. They may come of as pretentious to some, but thats mainly because their songs are very deep and presented in a very poetic style. Give them a try, they're definitely one of my favourite bands! I recommend the songs Revolution Roulette, Psychosis and Where Do We Draw The Line

Nothing is quite as awful as a garb nazi well then look at it as a theme, Goths theme is heavy on darkness, where steampunk's theme is set at Victorian scify. it's not a set standard but it's what people acknowledge as steampunk's roots.

Sita Carew True. Nothing is quite as awful as a garb nazi I dunno the people that feel the need to take a fledgling subculture and break it into subgenres come close in my book. There aren't enough of us as it is to have already started segregating us socially. Basically, anyone that starts inventing rules steps all over my pet peeves.

And as for the music, almost ALL of the bands associated w/ steampunk will tell you first and foremost that they ARE NOT steampunk music. They just like steampunk and put that love into their music. Steampunk music will most likely never actually exist and I for one think that is absolutely wonderful! Why do we need to standardize everything? Thats not very punk...

Sita Carew True. Nothing is quite as awful as a garb nazi But oddly enough I like nazi garb... David Bowie did it. why do the bad guys always have the best clothing? The Empire, The Nazis, Cobra Commander, Dracula... need I go on? Hellsing Cosplayers do it... does it make me a bad person? Maybe. Do I care? Not in the least bit.

True, and there are already enough subgenres in my book. I mean, I go for western steampunk, but I am more than willing to intermingle with those going Victorian

I am quite new to Steampunk (though I am on the bandwagon in a big way) BUT Gothic Archies is the first of the mentioned bands that I actually KNOW! HA!
