It's a new special! What are you most excited about seeing?
the new companion -- hopefully a good character
the new settings -- about time we had something that wasn't Earthbound!
the entire experience -- just happy to have something to help the withdrawal symptoms
David Tennant -- 'nuff said. :D

Teatime Brutality

Couple of random things that occured to me today -

- From the Tritovores' perspective, Planet of the Dead is about an ironic overabundance of faeces. They came to trade for the San Helian's poo. They found nothing but the Swarm's poo.

- The Tenth has gone from being the 'no second chances' Doctor to being all about second chances. Was forgiving the Master the turning point? If so it's another nice irony that his return gets foreshadowed right after Christina's second chance.

- "The one with the Giant Robot." As we all know, Robot was the title of the first Tom Baker adventure, but Doctor Who and the Giant Robot was the title of the Target novelisation. Since the Doctor expects that Malcom's read a UNIT file with the same name as a Target novelisation, is this, at last, an explanation for why the novelisations differ so much from the TV shows? They're not depictions of the actual events, they're the UNIT files which detail them. wink

The one hour special format doesn't seem to be working really, does it?

A good question. Since the stats are all in now, lets have a look...

On the Appreciation Index then The Next Doctor got 86, putting it at the lower end of the 'Excellent' bracket. Planet of the Dead got 88, putting it at the upper end of the 'Excellent' bracket.

So the format's working for the target audience.

In terms of Audience Share then The Next Doctor got 50.5% and Planet of the Dead got 39.6%

So the format's working for the BBC.

I'm sorry it's not working for you, and certainly none of this in any way invalidates your articulate, informed and personal opinion, but the one hour special format seems to be working very well for the BBC and the general audience.

I do wonder if that will hold true. The audience share's taken a sizeable jump down from the Christmas showing. And if the BBC weren't banking on Who being the jewel in their Easter Crown I'd be surprised, frankly.

It helps that it got a repeat showing Bank Holiday Monday I'd imagine, but the show wasn't exactly going up against stiff competition from the other channels. ITV's Who-wannabe Primeval was probably the biggest contender, and it seems to have seen that off without a hitch. Of course third time's the charm as they say, so it remains to be seen whether the quality of this episode has a knock-on effect on the next.

Nice to know the good ship Who's still sailing head and shoulders above the competition, mind. Now if only they'd put a little more sparkle in their next effort we could all be one big happy family again.

True, but Christmas Day TV is it's own unique little broadcasting enviroment so there're too many other factors there for that to be comparing like for like. I'd love to think that all of that huge festive audience share was down to Doctor Who's own merits, but in reality then BBC1's overall Christmas Day schedule was so strong that I suspect many families simply forgot other channels exsited.

Absolutely. Since the Appreciation Index figures show the audience liked Planet of the Dead more than they liked The Next Doctor, then it could well have a positive effect.

Mind sharing some of that popcorn, Whatsit?
*grabs beanie chair and sits down to watch*

Planet of the Dead was different because for once there wasn't some big bad villain, and I think I preferred it because of that.. it made the ending slightly anticlimactic, but life isn't always those huge crazy boss battles, either.
