Dhiren gaped in awe as the little green, agressive little creature she was and quite spirited too, pretty much shoved everyone aside and made way towards the gals. It soon became apparent that blood was surfaced as the Healers rushed in to take out the gal who had keeled over...

Dhiren could only wince with sympathy at the injury but, nevertheless, cheered on the new Green Rider and her new companion mentally while joining the polite clapping from the surrounding walls. First Impression was always good, and it wasn't clear that those who Impressed stuck around long. Looks like they had to feed their companions right afterwards...

How interesting. Was it from being in the shell for so many weeks on end?

It was then that a second egg cracking caught his attention. Grinning broadly, Dhiren watched as a young brown hatching came into world...

Brown...Just like Elsu...Dhiren laughed, his mind radiating his happiness at the though of his brown friend back at the cots. Of course, it was then the hatchling decided to push the group apart with a great deal of determination. Dhiren, unfortunately, got caught up somewhat in the flow but fought to keep the dragon in sight. He wanted to see who impressed!

Mathyn held his breath in sheer shock, what had he gotten himself into! That little green just tore through a human being without looking back. A scowl rose across his face and he edged away from the eggs slightly. His dominant nature made him sure he wanted to win, wanted to compete.

Looking around he glanced to the stand looking for his brother, were they here? Would his family see him coware away from the eggs? He looked back to the offending party, to the green and her rider, and to the newly emerged male. I wont be hurt, I wont, winners don't lose, and that is that.

Quinnel had been happily perched in a tree, playing her pipes when she heard the Queen’s call, and promptly fell out of the tree in surprise. For once the apprentice Harper did not feel anger at being interrupted, or even annoyed; she felt vaguely panicked. Half running and half hobbling, she hurried back to her sleeping quarters, flung on her Candidate robes, tossed her pipes aside, and sprinted to the Hatching Grounds.

Standing outside the entrance, she quickly tied her hair back with a bit of twine and braced herself for the wall of heat she knew that she’d encounter. Loping across the sands, she paused and winced when she saw an aggressive green slice a Candidate as she made her way to her Chosen, giving Quinnel a sense of déjà vu. Making her way to the Queen, she gave a deep bow before slinking into the side of the pack of girls. Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to calm down and tried to focus on Hatching and ignore the enchanting sounds the dragons were making.

But oh, it was so hard! The sound was so lovely and deep! She could feel it in her bones, in her heart! Soon Quinnel found herself humming along and, seeing that the next Hatchling was perusing the males, she couldn’t bring herself to care. Surely she could let go for a few moments and emmerse herself in the powerful music.

The green's mauling of one of their fellow Candidates affected Greloren and Riordan differently. Greloren merely frowned, wondering why that dimglow girl hadn't moved out of the way like they'd been instructed. Shaking his head a bit in disgust at her stupidity, he felt she deserved to be hurt and taken out. At least she wouldn't get killed now... her own sharding fault for not listening.

Riordan gasped as blood oozed from the girl's leg, watching in horror as she was carted off to be attended to by the Healers. There was a reason they were asked to stand by at the Hatching... He tore his eyes away from the injured girl in time to see the hatchling Impress to one of the girls. He gave a bit of a sigh and hoped that this girl could handle what seemed to be quite a handful of a hatchling.

Greloren scanned the stands for a moment, trying to pinpoint his parents in the crowd. He was sure they were here, watching him today, of all days. He was going to make them proud! For surely he'd Impress. With a smile, the weyrbrat turned his gaze back towards the eggs. With a grin, he watched the Hippo egg hatch, nearly giving a yell as his guess had been correct. It was a brown. Grinning, he watched the young brown, ready to step out of its way if need be.

Riordan's attention was drawn away from the girls at the sound of another egg opening. Ah... a brown. The boy watched, wondering who this youngling was going to pick. A boy, it seemed... but which one. There were so many Candidates... how was this brown going to pick?

The Green impressed, and Lanakirene smiled at Tseka, trying hard to put the image of Astri out of her mind. She liked that girl...but that was what happened sometimes...Hatchings were Hatchings. Murmuring to herself, she glanced around for faces she knew, just looking for eye contact, nothing more.

When the next egg split, she watched the new hatchling (...bronze, brown? she wasn't sure) with some interest, smiling slightly at its vague patience...so lovely. She shook her head as it approached the boys. Not one for her, then. Obviously.

---

Hanya felt faint at the blood and pressed her hands over her eyes as the next egg split; it was obviously not her colour; she would take a Green or the Queen or none at all. She couldn't do this; she couldn't be here.

Maranan kept his eyes open and dodged the little green. He felt sorry for the girl who was hurt.
He hoped she would be ok. The wound looked nasty.
He saw the girl impress the green, but heard more cracking.
He turned and prepared himself to face what may come.

Ah, there his was! He had been hiding, and Khunoth didn't have the patience for games. He shoved past a few more boys, roughly, but still not enough to hurt, before he stood before the one that would be his intended, his bonded, for the next however many Turns they lived.

In a previous life, the young man had been a Starsmith, drawn to meticulous detail. Hopefully that could apply to his dragon, and hopefully he could have patience... Faranth knew he would need it.

Ghilani, your Khunoth is so hungry. But don't feed him the bad bits of meat. Just the good parts. I'll know. But I'm hungry. Feed me now! Demanding as any youngling, but surprisingly picky, brown Khunoth bonded to the Candidate Ghilani, making the male to female bonded ratio temporarily even.

Again applause rose, this time louder. Things had calmed down, though the flashing red in the brown's eyes had made people worry for a little bit. He was better behaved than Haanyath though. Thankfully.

The green had been so violent, and Dusen was glad that he hadn't impressed her. She was likely to be a handful.

He watched the next egg hatch, it's shell cracking to reveal the little brown. Hopefully he wasn't as violent as his sister had been. Who would it chose?

He was a little shocked when the brown pushed past him, but at least he hadn't used his claws. He cheered mentally when the brown chose Ghilani, just because he wasn't his, didn't mean that he couldn't be glad when someone else was chosen.

Ferris had pushed her way through the girl crowd just in time to see Astri go down and the angry little green devil find whom she had been looking for. “Sweet… some action,”Ferris blurted quietly to herself before she looked away from the bloodied girl. She glanced one more over the pissy Green and watched as the little brown marched on through the boys.

“And of course they get the easy-going ones…” Again, Ferris continued with her quiet, to-self commentary of the whole goings on. She shifted her weight and moved away from one girl who just.. smelled really bad. …Though she doubted that she smelled any better. She cold feel sweat dripping about her hairline and she was sure that she looked nothing remotely close to glamorous, but what the heck, who cared. Dragonets just wanted food, not fashion tips.

She gave a sniff and rubbed the back of her neck, her hazel eyes shifting rapidly from egg to egg. Despite her seemingly calm, if one could say that, demenor at the given time, the teen could feel herself shaking. The hum of the dragons about the Sands rattled her ribs and teeth, and there was a tickle in her ear that she couldn’t stop. But she didn’t want this to stop… IT WAS SO EFFING AWESOME.

Very, very finally, there was C’ren watching from the audience. Well, sort of… actually, the dragonrider had insinuated himself near the entrance of the cavern, so he could report the Hatching back to Ceylith. She did so love small tiny things like newborn dragonets. The man himself was less enthusiastic about spending time in a hot, stuffy, crowded cave with overexcited kids and baby dragons, but this was for Ceylith. His cold gray eyes roamed over the Candidates, searching for the few he and Ceylith had Searched. It wasn’t vanity, exactly, but he rather hoped that they would Impress. It would make the Green happy to know that she had done her job well.

The first was a Green, Ceylith. A rather grumpy one. She Impressed to the… oh, I don’t know her name… the smith-girl. Not one of ours. She also mauled a Candidate. Again, also not one of ours, so you can stop panicking. A Brown has just hatched as well; he looks like he’s slightly better tempered than his sister but… well, he’s not going towards the girls. He’s got boys on his mind.

Outside of the Hatching Grounds, Ceylith wiggled anxiously. Like all of her kind, she was humming but part of her mind was on the hatching eggs. It was time, she knew. She had known before C’ren, in the manner of all dragons. Do you see… umm… Kal…ca…

Kallista. Yes, I see her. She’s fine so far. No major screw-ups yet.

Ceylith sighed mentally, a gust of wind through C’ren’s mind. Your concern is touching, as always, Mine…

From her position in the back of the group, Zara didn't have the best view of what was going on. That was alright, though...she'd seen Hatchings before. For some of these former-Crafters and ex-Holders, this was probably the first time they'd ever seen dragons so young. Or ruthless, in the case of the green that shoved past her and sliced poor Astri's leg in her haste to get to Tseka.

As Ghilani walked from the sands with a brown, she flashed a slight smile at him before turning her attention to the sands once more. Just because she'd been here before, well...it was no excuse to act like a dimglow and end up like Astri.

Jessan held his breath as he watched the little green break through her shell and then proceed to maul a helpless girl before finding her own. There was not too much time to watch as a brown came tumbling behind her and made his way straight towards the boys. He held his breathe but felt nothing. When the little one walked past him, Jessan almost fainted in disappointment and relief. There would be plenty of chances. He really didn't know any of the other Candidates, having been Searched late, but nonetheless he gave a nod and a smile towards the boy that the brown finally stopped in front of... Hopefully, they would make a great pair.

Kallista gasped but managed to stay calm as the green arrived on the scene. Just by the way she moved, the runner could tell that the dragon knew who she was and what she was about and would take no for an answer. Even if it meant taking out a candidate to get to the one she was meant to be her own.

Her hazel eyes lightened into a green as she watched a girl near her go down. It happened so quickly, she doubted that the girl even had time to realize what was happening. Shaking a little, Kallista turned her attention back to the eggs. The runner from Sandy Bend could only hope she didn't get mauled or left behind on the sands.

Abhijanya watched the two dragons impress, songs swelling up in her. Even if she wouldn't impress, Janya wouldn't have given this experience up for the world. The sands burned her feet through the frail sandals, and the robes kept falling down her arms, but she hardly noticed. All of the eggs were teeming with life, ready to burst forth at the slightest notice to find their rider. Janya could only dare to hope that she might join those ranks.

Gar nearly tripped directly over the brown as he came forward and it nosed in through the boys. At the last second he managed to dodge it, and he breathed a sigh of relief. He tensed immediately after, wondering What if...? But no. The brown kept going. Perhaps he'd best just stand still from now on. He could see better at least. The eggs rocked and he gulped, wringing his hands. Still plenty left, right?

Faranie dismissed the brown at first sight. Nothing for her there. She did look around when she heard the applause, but seeing Gar still alone she smirked and went back to her quiet vigil over the eggs. "Shame, dear brother," she whispered to herself. With luck the next egg to hatch would be another green, or better, the gold.

Laflan had been one of the first lads shoved out of the way by the brown. Sure he didn't impress it, but the touch alone made him thrill. A dragon had TOUCHED him! No one in his family could say as much. Somewhere from the stands and ledges came a little noise amidst the humming and clapping--Nogard, surely, feeding off Laf's excitement. He urged the firelizard to stay put, wherever it was. It wouldn't do for the blue to dive down now to join him. Not while things were already so exciting!

When the first egg hatched, Mal stopped moving. Maybe if he didn’t move, they wouldn’t see him… the angry creature that hatched from the egg bore slight resemblance to an adult dragon, but it was squat where adults were lithe and lean. Also, the Green was very, very angry. He would’ve been tempted to make a joke about monthlies, but he rather valued his life and the robe seemed like little protection against talons and teeth. Still, it was a relief when the angry Green went off to the females rather than the males. Whatever relief was gathered from that evaporated quickly as a girl went down, a victim of a mauling.

But… she hadn’t even done anything from what Mal could see. She hadn’t disobeyed the rules. She hadn’t done anything spectacularly stupid. And she had been attacked anyway… no. Not attacked. She had simply been in the way. When the newly hatched Brown started heading the boys’ way, Mal got all nervous again. Maybe this whole Candidate thing wasn’t such a good idea… at least the Brown Impressed to someone else. Only eighteen more eggs to go… hopefully Mal could go without falling over or something.

When the Brown started lumbering towards the boys, Cil was quick to move out of the way. After what had happened to that poor girl, he wasn’t taking any chances! And he recognized that girl from class! She had been joking around with Elae and the others. If she was lucky, she would walk again someday… he briefly glanced across the Sands to find Raena, wondering if the Healer apprentice was on duty or attending the Hatching. He caught sight of her soon enough and tried to smile reassuringly at her; it fell a little flat, however, since he wasn’t feeling very sure of himself at all.

Two down. Eighteen more to go… plenty of more chances for himself and his new friends to Impress. And there was still that Gold egg… he had to wonder who the next Goldrider would be. Actually, all of the new riders, now that he thought about it.

Standing nearby the Nose was oddly reassuring in a way. At least one of them was confident about this. Elae briefly fiddled with a strand of her hair before irritably pushing it out of the way. Now was not a time for fiddling of any sort! No one would accuse her of fiddling while a Hatching went on! She too stood up a little straighter, but her newfound confidence quickly crumbled as Astri---a new friend, she had thought----went down to an irritable Green’s impatience.

“Do you think she’s ok?” she whispered to Nan, trying to get a better look as the Healers carried the stricken girl out. Well, she was breathing. But there was so much blood… once again Elae’s hand went up to her hair, and this time she didn’t stop herself. The Brown’s hatching, at least, went by more smoothly. At least, no one was mauled.
