Valeria winces to herself as she slips into the class late and takes a seat in the back. She felt pretty sure her presence had been noted, and frowns slightly, expecting to be called to task for being so late. She reaches up and fiddles with a strand of her short hair, a nervous habit of hers when she thought she was going to get in trouble. Looking around the room, she notices a few other candidates as well, knowing quite a few of them had been lucky enough to go to the Touching while she had still been at home taking care of things for her parents. Her mom had just recently gotten rather ill, so more of the household chores had fallen onto her own shoulders, being the oldest in the household. She wasn't bitter about missing the Touching, but she was a bit sad. But, feeling sorry for oneself wouldn't improve one's situation, and besides.. There would always be other clutches she could have a shot at, right?

She turns her eyes back up to the dragonrider at the front of the class, giving him her utmost attention now.

Dusen was thinking about how he was going to convince Spring to stay away from the hatching, not that it would be a problem. Spring was usually good about doing what he was told to do.

The sound of Mararan greeting him drew him from his thoughts and he looked over to him. "Hey," he whispered back, motioning for the other boy to take a seat next to him. He didn't think that it would be a very good idea for Maranan to draw too much attention to himself from the Candidate Master; after all, the man didn't seem like the type that would put up with people messing around in his lessons. "You ready for this?"

Maranan sat down and smiled. "Ready as I'll ever be. Not sure any of them Dragonets will want me, but we can try right." He smiled and shrugged then patted Dusen on the shoulder. "Just remember white robe and sandals, and be careful. You should be fine." He was a tad worried for his new friend. He hoped he impressed. He would be good for a new dragonet. He was sure of it.

During the first part of the lesson and when the other Candidates started to ask questions, Kallista merely stayed in her place towards the back of the class. It would be best for her to listen and not be heard. The more she absorbed, perhaps the better chance she would have at Impressing.

She was a little worried about the tales of Candidates getting mauled, scarred or worse out on the stands. Little dragons were not to be blamed; all that was on their mind was finding their beloved and getting food in his or her belly. Kallista was sure she would act the same in the little one's position. Some of the other students seemed very familiar with the lessons and were whispering underneath the CandidateMaster's lecture. While others looked nervous and like they might be sick. Kallista was neither. More calm and accepting than anything else. If not this time, then perhaps another. She could always go back to running.

Jessan arrived about the time that class started. He searched for an empty seat and found one up close towards the class. It was interesting to be in a class with such a wide age group. And if the Candidate Master made a mistake, well, Jessan would not begrudge him. He knew just enough reading and writing along with numbers to buy feed and keep track of the herds.

Some of the other students looked barely into their teens or even old enough to stand. While others looked to be the same age as him. He tried not to let his mind wander too much while the Master was reciting
Dos and Donts of standing on the sands. He has missed the Touching but was told by someone that Touching did not always guarantee Impression. Best to just soak it all in and when it was done, he would either be standing or be a dragonrider.

Young? Young?! That was all she could say about the boy? Great shells and stars, what was this world coming to? Girls didn't even form opinions about boys besides commenting on their age. Or maybe it was just La. That girl was pretty boring despite the very juicy rumours that came along with her. Nan rolled her eyes, thoroughly unimpressed by La's analysis of the boy in question, but decided to continue onwards. "Of course he's young. Lots of them are. Better get 'em young than try and retrain them when they're older and set in their ways. But really, La, all you can say about him is that he's young?"

Her attention was diverted when Elae slid closer, face lighting up when she recognized the girl. Aaah, now here was someone who would have a real appreciation of other people and their potential for secrets! At the mention of Cil she giggled, muffling the sound by covering her hand with her mouth. "You can never be too careful with those manly bits, eh Cil?" Nan grinned cheekily at him, before returning her attention to La and Elae.

"Greenrider? I'm sure this boy has some very manly jewellery, La, no need to go shoving him in with the pretty boys. But, then again, there is a possibility he's leaning down that path. What do you think, Elae? Candidate for the green brigade?"
PostPosted: Thu Mar 19, 2009 7:34 pm

Oh, now Elae could get used to hanging around these girls. She had to stifle her own giggles at La’s wise words of how boys ought to just man-up and get over the whole robe thing. It was very true. Honestly, boys complained more about the robes than any girl did! “You know, I have a theory why we’re supposed to wear robes. It would be much more practical to just wear some, I dunno… leather armor or something. But you know how hot it gets on the Sands. No one wants to run around wearing all that. I know I personally prefer some freedom.”

Nan’s comment was even more successful in terms of laughter. Elae actually laughed out loud before she could cover her mouth. Even then she still shook with amusement at the other girl’s words, deciding that anyone who mocked Cil like that was a friend. “Oh, I don’t know… I think he’s too young to tell. And it’s not even as if all Greenriders are happy anyway. The one who Searched me was rather… disgruntled. Actually, I personally think that a good gruntling could’ve done him some good.” A bit blunt, perhaps, but she doubted that either girl would really care.

Sitting next to the trio as he was, Cil could hardly help but overhear their conversation, especially the parts about… err… his manly bits and all that. It was obvious that his years of living in the Weyr had done little to get rid of his Holdfolk-like prudery. He blushed and hunched his shoulders in a lame----and failtastic---attempt to hide the red. Most of the conversation simply baffled him; who cared about what the boy’s… err… preferences were? It didn’t really matter that much. And clothes? How long could they talk about those damned clothes?

He sighed. It was a true trait of Cil’s that he could be within the company of three young teenage girls and still sigh.

The Candidatemaster didn't expect such a great torrent of questions, but he was prepared to deal with them none the less. At least they had all shown up- or most of them anyhow. Enough of them to make the room crowded, and warm it up to a comfortable temperature. In an hour or two, it would be unbearable, so he would have to work quickly, firing off answers as they fired off questions.

Turning first to Dhiren (who was too young looking, in P'ton's opinion), he answered as best he could, personal feelings laid on the side lines, for now. "Young dragons are prone to be distracted rather easily. It's a new world for them, and with everything so bright and colorful, they can get frightened, or wandered off. If the Candidates looked differently, it's entirely likely that the dragonet will either get scared and maul them, or be drawn to them simply for the color of their clothes. It's known as forced-Impression, and the bonds between those sorts of pairs are never as strong or as deep as would between the dragon and their true intended."

He frowned at Raena's question, though he shrugged his shoulders briefly to indicate that the answer was beyond him. "There's plenty of room in the Weyrling Barracks for you lot while your dragons are still young enough and small enough to fit in there. As to when you get older... I'm not sure. That will be up to the Weyrleader. We do technically have enough empty weyrs, but many of them would need some major cleaning out and renovation. Some have been used as a storage room for far too many Turns." Again P'ton shrugged, moving on to the next curious inquiry.

He actually liked Lynna's question- it was honest of her, and honesty was a breath of fresh air. "Holdborn and Weyrborn stand an equal chance, from what I've seen, and I've seen many, many Impressions. I saw the very daughter of a bronzerider and a goldrider passed over first by a Queen, then by all the greens, then by the blues, then by the browns... She never did Impress. The one who got the Queen had previously lived in a small cothold, taking care of sheep, I believe. On the same token, Weyrborn sometimes do Impress over Holdborn, but where you grew up has nothing to do with it."

Cilyme's question showed a common misconception of how Searching worked, but again, the Candidatemaster was kind. "You're incorrect in your statement that dragons Search people based on the dragons on the sands. They probe into the minds of others, and see something there that would make them fit to ride a dragon. Search dragons try to find at least twice the amount of Candidates as eggs. They don't know what the eggs will be like- or, indeed, if they will even hatch. Many clutches have a dud egg or two. So no, the dragons cannot tell. If they can, they aren't telling us. And some Searched never Impress. The dragons saw they had the potential, but a dragon was never born that fit into their specific personality."

The questions were all good, Laflan's included. "If a Candidate is attacked, Healers are standing by. They will rush the Candidate off the sands and to the infirmary. Please don't move forward to help, as horrible as that sounds. That's likely to end in more accidents than just leaving them be. The Healers move fast, and they know what they're doing."

Astri had been sitting quietly thus far, trying to take everything in. But the level of noise was gradually increasing. First she had thought it rude, but now she wanted in on the gossip. She had been too busy to actively participate thus far, but she found herself leaning closer and closer to the group formed by Elae, Nan, and La. They were an interesting lot, all relatively close to her own age. It would be nice to make friends, she reflected, even if it was getting to be too late to do so.

Damn, they were going to get away with this? Maybe Nan wasn't necessarily so bad after all. Putting a hand over her mouth to stifle a giggle at the other girls' newest comments, La tilted her head down and rejoined the conversation. Keeping an eye on Astri on the off chance that the girl would somehow get them into trouble, she inclined her head and flashed her a brief smile.

Rubbing her lower lip thoughtfully, she snorted softly at Elae's last comment about the rider who had Searched her. "Mm. Seems these days a good deal of Riders have gotten something stuck up their bums, and not just the boys on the greens. I suppose it's probably the overcrowding," she said with a slight shrug. Turning back to Nan, she couldn't help but quirk a smile at the gentle teasing that made Cil go red. Some boys were so sensitive.

"Oh, I'm sorry Cil, did we hurt your feelings? Or perhaps your diginity?" she asked, managing to sound chipper in spite of some extremely sardonic language.

Dhiren gave the Candidate Master a polite smile and nodded, resisting the urge to turn and glare at those who had whispered about his choice of question. So what if they thought it was odd a boy had asked about jewelry, not his fault his mother had dealt with the stuff in the trading business!

Sitting there, Dhiren twisted his hands as he thought, a bad habit he had picked up from a Harper that had traveled with them a Turn or two ago. He didn't realize that the Impression was so...complex...and he had a strong feeling that, in a fit of nerves, he would forget everything this rider had stuffed into his head while out on the sands. But, even if he didn't impress this Turn, it was better to watch and learn from the older Candidates to see what they did different.

As his father had told him: Turns bring experience, every day will teach you something different.

Bowing his head, Dhiren grimced and twisted his hands again. "Im nervous...I've never been this nervous...I wonder if everyone is like this on their first chance..." He spoke in a soft whisper but, at the same time, spoke loud enough for those sitting around him to hear.

So many conversations and questions, there had to be priory or her head would spin. Her heart went out for Cil, but he chose to sit there, she couldn't very well save him from the jokes that would likely always be there, even if he Impressed bronze and everyone joking him Impressed the blues and greens. Tuning out the rest of the conversations on cloths and such, never had been something she was very interested in, she instead focused hearing the questions so she could understand the answers.

The voice next to her nabbed her attention for a little while, glancing over, she spoke lightly, "It is, pretty soon the dragons will be in danger of tripping over each other for what little space there is." It concerned her, the potential for danger and great harm being done was very high. Naturally she wanted to alleviate that as much as possible, make life easier and more fluid.

After the master started answering, particularly her question, the move to a new weyr seemed the answer. Should the move be decided, she'd endorse it completely, then moving along with these that did leave would be a great trip. Sure its farther from home, but to empty out a new weyr and get it into shape was very tempting. Rather then think of the logistics too much, she just finished listening to the answers given.

A cot hold girl impressed a Queen, the daughter of the two highest ranking dragons had to be very embarrassed. It was nice to know even those not born in a weyr had a real chance at Impressing, though the number of weyr born impressing was a bit saddening.

The real challenge was knowing she couldn't go help those that were hurt even if it was her craft to do so. The reason was sound, the others of her ilk could handle it, but oh would it be horrid if she needed them in that manner!

Maranan heard Dhiren's litany. He got up and walked over to him. He sat down and patted his back. "Here now! You'll be ok. We are all a little nervous here. Me, I'm a bit scared. But I know I'll make it through this somehow. Just relax and think on those eggs." He smiled at the other.

"Disgruntled greenrider eh? Can't say that narrows it down to any one." Having not been specifically Searched, Nan didn't know who was currently on the Search. She could have probably asked one of the kitchen workers, but even then they might not even know. Besides, it was more mysterious if they didn't know who it was. Half of the best gossip was about 'mysterious people. "Not to say there aren't some that are nice but there's definitely enough of them who are grumpy as a nesting tunnel snake." She definitely understood where Elae was coming from. It appeared that La shared her feelings.

La's comment to Cil made her giggle again, and she batted her eyelashes at the older boy. "Don't tease him too much, La. Having all the blood rush to one place is never a good idea." Nan nodded sagely, though the twinkle in her eye betrayed the double meaning of her sentence. Ah, teasing the Hold-folk were so funny. One would think that Cil would have gotten used to it, having hung around the Weyr for so long. Astri leaning in didn't go unnoticed by Nandeli, who simply beckoned the girl to come closer the moment she caught her eye. The more the merrier, especially when it came to girls.

She was drawn away from the conversation momentarily by a female voice nearby, and the young woman looked up to see who was speaking. Raena's comment made her raise an eyebrow, the gears already turning in her head. Leaning back in to her little group, she whispered, "That one's a real know it all, talking like she's the only one who noticed the Weyr's getting overcrowded. You'd think she was trying to get something from P'ton with all that talk." She waggled her eyebrows, knowing very well that she was only starting something. But little rumours about Weyr girls trying to get in with the Candidatemaster to try and increase their chances of Impressing weren't too bad, were they?

Elae flashed a bright smile at Astri, vaguely recognizing the girl by sight but not by name. Such a pity. She was really pretty too. Ah well! There would be plenty of time to get to know other people, and Elae rather looked forward to it. “That’s not my thinking, La. I’m rather thinking he needs something up his b… well, never mind. If I continue any more, poor Cil here will have an apoplectic fit. Although, I do believe I see Raena over there. Perhaps she could help us if Cil’s head ever did explode from pure shame.”

But La had a good point; the overcrowding was getting under nearly everyone’s skins these days. Even Elae occasionally felt a little antsy. But this just made way into even juicier gossip. She edged her chair even closer to the other girls’ so she could lower her voice. “What do you think about the rumors of a new Weyr being formed? I’ve heard a few riders talking about it. Well, arguing. Same thing really. It sounds like Goldrider Favan has everyone in a tizzy.” To say the least. It wasn’t quite as interesting as the relationships between riders, but this would do for now.

Besides, if anyone knew about this, it would be Nan. The Nose knows.

Oh, hey! Questions were being answered! Cil listened intently, once again trying to commit it all to memory. This was considerably more difficult with three----now four---teenage girls around him, all laughing and giggling over his manly bits.

Of all things! He endeavored to ignore them, but this was a lost battle before it even began. At La’s persistent needling, he only grew redder and shifted around in his seat more.

Eee! That was so cute! Elae simply watched in fascination as Cil grew steadily more crimson, being very amused. On days when gossip was a bit slow, she rather enjoyed seeing how much she could embarrass her friend. There was very little guilt over it, of course; if he didn’t enjoy it on some level, he surely would have stopped being around her.

Her grin turned into a small frown at Nan’s words as she chose to mock Raena a little. But the smile returned soon enough. “Oh, like you’re not a know-it-all, Nan… I like Raena. She’s nice. A little… I dunno… shy, I suppose, but nice enough. She’s a Healer. Speaking of mysterious people… did you hear about her firelizard? I just learned this the other day! Apparently, one day Raena there got an egg. It was just left with her! No note, no anything to explain where it came from. I think she has an admirer!”
PostPosted: Thu Mar 19, 2009 8:54 pm

"If Favan leaves, it'll make a pretty nasty mess. How many of the bronzeriders would go with her for the chance to be Weyrleader? Who else would go?" La glanced quesioningly at Nan as she spoke, wondering if the Weyr's key gossip had any interesting information in that respect.

Nan's comment about Raena made her snort quietly, covering her mouth with her hand and then glancing away as if she hadn't been part of the conversation. The idea of the girl attempting to seduce P'ton was too much for her, though, and her shoulders continued to shake with silent laughter even as Elae scolded Nan.

As the conversation turned to real gossip, La elected to slowly begin tuning it out. Of course, there really wasn't much else to listen to, but if the girls were going to talk truly girly things, she'd wait until her own presence and razor wit were necessary. For the time-being, she was all right with just letting the sound wash over her.
