Ooh, Rocket, I like it!
Although I've always wondered where the European notion of dragons came from when the original Asian myth had like antlers and whiskers and stuff...
I'm totally not posting mine until further notice though.
Maybe...

Basically, the dragon is an amalgam of ancestral memories of being chased by predators, along with early humans digging up bones that weren't from any known living animal. They proclaimed "dragons!", & speculation, superstition, & stories carried that first physical evidence toward what we now know today as folk tales of dragons. 3nodding

Ah, that does make sense....
But I've never heard of making up dragons being remnants of being chased by predators in the past.
That would actually explain a lot of myths, even the basilisk since first instinct when confronted with something frightening/life-threatening is to freeze.
